Maktrelationer innanför fängelsemurarna : En fältteoretisk studie av Orange Is the New Black / Power relationships within the prison walls : A field theoretical study of Orange Is the New Black

Dizdarevic, Nurvedina January 2017 (has links)
Important subjects in fictional tv-series are being constructed in different ways, depending on the producers view on the world. By examining power relationships you can find out what role power plays within subjects like hate, race and class. The purpose of this study was to analyze how power relationships operate on the popular cultural tv-show Orange Is the New Black. The seventh episode of season 4 was analyzed, which aired in June 2016. The questions that were asked to the material were: ”How are power relationships constructed within the field of Orange Is the New Black?”, ”In what situations are these power relationships clear?”, and ”Are these situations positive/negative, and if so, in which way?”. These questions were asked to get the whole picture of the power relationships within the episode. In this study the theory of class by Pierre Bourdieu was used, where the concept of field, capital and habitus took a lot of space. Marx definition of class was also discussed in the study, because class is mostly associated with him. Another theory that was discussed was Erving Goffman’s theory about stigma. The purpose of using this theory was to understand what attributes a prisoner can have that could affect how other people view them. In this study, the methodology of Bourdieu was used. The analysis showed that power relationships are being constructed in different ways. When the producer creates situations where the characters are fighting about power and capital, the viewer is able to see how power is operating within important questions. Fights about capital and power were shown in different ways. The conclusion that was made is that power relationships are being constructed in different ways, that these situations are both positive and negative and that they can affect peoples mind due to being a popular cultural tv-show that is seen by many.

Mildton, Jenny, Brisling, Linnéa January 2019 (has links)
Distinktionen återfanns även i arbetsannonserna. / The purpose of this study was to investigate the theories of Pierre Bourdieu to capture their relevance today. Does the background of an individual affect whether they choose to work at a high culture museum or a museum of popular culture? Furthermore, if this expresses itself in the organizationalidentity. To collect empirical data four semi-structured interviews were performed with persons in managerial roles at the Swedish Nationalmuseum and ABBA the museum. An analysis of employment advertisements was also carried out to reach which attributes were required at the two museums. The study show that Nationalmuseum have tendencies categorising them as high culture whilst ABBA the museum is of the popular kind. Both findings can be related to the backgrounds of the interviewed managers. However, one of the four cases did not match with the theories of Bourdieu, making the theories in that regard questionable. The distinction was also found in the employment advertisements. These tendencies towards the high – and popular culture partially shines through in the organizationalidentity.

Expats´ in Zürich : A qualitative study of expats´ reasons and choices regarding integration, education and social grounds

Andersson, Kristina January 2019 (has links)
This study examines expats and their families in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland. Their reasons and choices regarding integrating (or not) into the Swiss society, educational strategies for their children and possessed capital assets upon arrival in Switzerland is the three problem statements being explored. Pierre Bourdieu’s´ sociology is the theoretical framework for this study – the concept of different types of capital and educational strategies are especially important in this regard. Interviews with female expats whose children attend the Inter-Community School Zürich (ICSZ) were conducted and the stated purpose of the study was obtained. This study concludes that these expat families choose the international grounds rather than the local, due to language barriers. The language makes it hard for both themselves and their children to integrate and/or feel part of the Swiss community and society. The expats are integrated into the international ´expat-bubble´ rather than the Swiss society or community, and the reason is due to the lack of time spent with the local people, not mastering the language and/or not being interested enough to make the effort to integrate. This specific group of expats can be seen as an ´international elite- group´, based on their assets of capital, their cosmopolitan lifestyle and international social grounds.  These expats value their capitals highly but is not stating that one specific capital is more needed than another; all their assets are of worth and they do not consciously use a specific capital for their integration.

Den gåtfulla stenen från Saxholmen : Habitusbegreppet som analytiskt verktyg för förståelsen av orsakssammanhangen kring ovanliga fynd / The enigmatic stone from Saxholmen : Habitus concept as an analytical tool for understanding the causal link between unusual findings

Norlinder, Gabriella January 2019 (has links)
Abstract Norlinder, Gabriella. 2019. My purpose with this qualitative study was to use Bourdieu's concept of Habitus with the associated capital species as an analytical tool, to try to shed light on the value-charged context of human behavior patterns. This in order to, through it, be able to demonstrate a possible explanation for why unusual finds are found in archaeological excavations. The object of my analysis here, in this study, is an engraved Roman stone age engraving stone found at the excavations on the medieval Saxon Castle in the Kristinehamn archipelago. My method has been theoretical, consisting mainly of literature studies and a small number of oral sources. I have delimited myself only to highlight one single artifact; the engraved stone and only a single excavation site; Saxholmen for my study. Only a few examples from other places have been used and then for the purpose of better clarifying my chosen study material. This study is based on three issues that concern the location of the stone, outside its proper context, whether a Habitus perspective can be a possible analytical tool for interpreting unusual findings, and whether Saxholm's Habitus-related functions could reflect a possible explanation for the location of the stone. My conclusions are thus that the stone has probably traveled far and probably changed owners more than once. In view of the residents' prestige-oriented lifestyle and a possible link to Gotland, it may have been the result of trade contacts or looting. I have also come to the conclusion that the Habitus concept is absolutely useful as an analytical tool in this type of study, since it highlights abstract values in human life. In my opinion, the Saxholmen seen from a Habitus- related perspective holds all of the capital species / values that are included in the essay and can therefore demonstrate a number of possible interpretations as to why the stone is included in the finds material from the site. Wissenschaftskommunikation zur Exzellenzinitiative

Marty, Christoph 15 November 2016 (has links)
The Initiative for Excellence is a joint research funding program of the German Federal State and the 16 Länder. It aims at (1) increasing the international competitiveness of German universites and (2) making peaks within the German university system more visible. These goals motivate a rhetoric of scientific excellence which is - at least partly - not in line with the measurable impacts of the Initiative for Excellence on the German university system. This thesis contains a proposal for a model to analyze such symbolic constructions. For that reason, the goal "visibility" is discussed with reference to the theories of Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu, Niklas Luhmann and Thomas Gieryn. The resulting synthesis guides the empirical work: Results of a quantitative framing analysis of media reporting on the Initiative for Excellence are combined with results from a survey of applicants and 19 qualitative interviews with journalists as well as members of the Grants Committee. The results document the stimulating effects of symbols in general and the importance of the decision-making-process for the Initiative for Excellence, in particular. Finally, the results motivate recommendations for a new research funding program.

\'Quando nasce um bebê, nasce também uma mãe?\' : maternidade e reprodução humana assistida em mulheres laqueadas / When a baby is born, also a mother born? \": maternity and assisted human reproduction in sterilized women

Claudia Valença Fontenele 15 December 2010 (has links)
Com autonomia / In this thesis I analyze the trajectories of sterilized women who wish to have a new experience of maternity by means of assisted human reproduction, identifying the agents and socializing institutions which contributed to the decision taken. The analysis focuses on the understanding of how the trajectory is constructed, from the repentance of the original sterilization through to the renewal of the desire for maternity. On the basis of the hypothesis that maternity and the blood relationship are still preponderant in the constitution of the family, the author has described and analyzed these trajectories and their implications in the act of the reconstruction of the family, seeing that the return to the renewed experience of maternity arises as a desire followed by action, some years after the establishment of the second marital relationship. During the discussions with the women involved, other relevant questions such as the greater value attributed to the discourse on the origin of individuals and, in consequence, of the biologization of the social dimension and of the naturalization of the roles involved, arose. The field of study consisted of women who were awaiting assisted human reproduction treatment at a hospital of the public health network of the State of São Paulo. We, the women concerned and the author, met on several occasions: sometimes all together, at others, individually, by means of these contacts building up a certain affection. Thus the material was composed of the transcriptions of the discussion group, of the interviews and of the notes made in the field diary. Assisted human reproduction is, nowadays, becoming widespread, determining the primacy of biology, of the science which can provide whoever seeks it with the possibility of having a baby the source of whose genetic material is safe, certain, genes of ones genes. And this biologization of the social dimension brings with it another subliminal question, because in undergoing assisted human reproduction treatment, the woman concerned perpetuates and guarantees the family ideal, the background of her own upbringing: only one mother, only one father, in brief: one only and undoubted origin. There is a discourse of the renewed value of pregnancy, a biological and biographical event par excellence. It is important that the women who participated in this study, and as many others scattered throughout this country, should be better informed (about contraceptive procedures, sterilization, risks, assisted human reproduction, its collateral effects and the possibilities of success, among other things) so that, once in possession of this knowledge, they might make their choices unconstrained.

In general, consumer studies place women under three different prisms: as a coadjuvant, when considering that their consumption activities depend on the masculine, seeking conditions of equity when analyzing when it masculiniza to a situation of consumption or in conservative positions, by studying consumption in their roles as mother, wife or in household-related processes. Aligned with Pierre Bourdieu who advocates the existence of a kind of male domination in society, operating through well defined mechanisms and their reflexes can be seen in consumer behavior. Specifically, beer and bar in Brazil are reflections of this pre-established dynamics, where the woman is seen as an object within a historically masculinized environment. The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the female consumption of beer in bars in the city of Porto Alegre and to verify the possible influence of socio-historical consumer patterns, describing the female behavior within the studied context. For this, a qualitative research was carried out, inspired by ethnographic studies, at the moment of the consumption of beer by women in bars of the city, identifying the meanings and the representations of the female consumption of beer. The results were structured in three parts for discussion: first through market mythologies that interfere with consumption. In the second part through the discourses and the reflex in the feminine behavior. The third part brings the context and the product through the lens of the interviewees. This study encouraged theoretical contributions in advancing the position of women in consumer studies in a privileged position within a masculinized environment, suggesting the existence of unfoldments for new studies. From a professional point of view, the study inspires a set of practical suggestions to make female beer consumption experiences more inclusive using brand positioning, market performance of companies in the sector and the emergence of new products.

The purpose of this essay is to detect what kinds of changes happened to the professionals who took part in the continual updating and to determine which conditions the project offered that allowed, made it easier and/or helped these changes. The qualitative research was developed by analyzing documents of the project implantation and implementation, the students and teachers protocols in the time of the continual updating as well as the interviews with three professionals who took part in the project and the author s reflexive point about the proposal to the Mathematics in the project in study. The results of the analysis were based on Pierre Bourdieu studies about Reproduction, symbolic violence, habitus, cultural capital and in Gary Sikes e Michael Huberman studies about the stages in the teachers lives and their carriers. It was possible, from this analysis, to identify changes in some teachers way of teaching related to the continual updating program during the project development. These changes are related to the ways of mediation, to the institutionalized cultural capital and to the recognition of the reproduction process and symbolic violence done by the school and the rupture of this process by the project / A formação continuada de professores é o tema deste trabalho, desenvolvido a partir do estudo do Projeto Ensinar e Aprender Corrigindo o Fluxo do Ciclo II, conhecido como projeto de aceleração da aprendizagem para alunos de 5ª a 8ª séries do Ensino Fundamental, implementado pela SEE/SP nos anos de 2001 e 2002.

”I’m not vain but I love shoes and champagne…” : En kvalitativ textanalys av svenska influencers alkoholrelaterade Instagram-inlägg / ”I’m not vain but I love shoes and champagne…” : A Qualitative Text Analysis of Swedish Influencers’ Alcohol-Related Instagram Posts

Törnquist, Matilda January 2019 (has links)
Today, influencers and alcohol as well as Sweden’s second most popular social media platform Instagram, have a great position in Sweden. This examination, that is found within the social media field, investigates how Swedish influencers on Instagram, through photos, films and captions, communicate about alcohol. The study aims to find out which alcoholrelated lifestyle that influencers mediate and if the alcoholic drinks indicate to be something more than only drinks. The study is based on Bourdieu’s theory about fields, habitus and capitals, that produce and reproduce power elites. It is also based on semiotics, denotation and connotation as well as the interplay between photos and written texts. This examination works on a qualitative text analysis. In total, 182 photos/films, that contain alcohol, and belonging captions are being analysed. These were published between April and September in 2018. The content – the participants, objects and environments – is being analysed, systematized and classified into different categories and themes. The analysis results in five categories, that focus on the placing of the alcohol, and seven themes, that focus on what the alcohol symbolizes. The seven themes are weekdays, exclusivity, celebration, vacation, weekend, fellowship and jocularity. The results also show that influencers drink different alcoholic drinks, with different people or alone, and in different environments, something that has to do with their lifestyle and habitus. They mainly indicate an economic and a social capital, and they appear to be part of the same social field. The analysed photos, films and captions principally connotate messages saying alcohol is something good.
