Previous issue date: 2014-08-13 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present study explores food practices of different natures in several religious contexts in a comparative manner. The main goal is to drive attention to the fact that all religions, if they do not have a pre established food conduct by their doctrines, they have a say about food and how it affects religious disposition.
This research is based on exclusive bibliographical data taken from religious doctrines, as well as texts produced by believers and also few analysis done by food specialists, anthropologists and sociologists of food and food practices.
Man, its food and its religion are studied under the evolutionistic perspective. We have tried to retrieve the origins of the relationship between food, food practices and religion. We have observed the construction of this relation in detail in order to detect general functions among the religions studied here.
We have concluded food has common functions at several levels in different religions, which constitutes a significant point to compare. The effects of food practices touch individuals in physical and psychological aspects, once it determines the amount and quality of what is to be eaten. It also has cultural effects, since cultural values are attributed to foods and later, these values are either absorbed or rejected according to cultural rules that are similar to rules of language. In the same way, there are social effects, since food in religious case can be a frontier and an identity element to the groups; in terms of social effects, the agreement about the same food and food practices favors the cohesion of the group and excludes those of different practices. For all these aspects food and food practices constitute a resource that helps religion to represent and reinforce its values / A presente dissertação visa explorar as práticas alimentares de diferentes naturezas nos diversos contextos religiosos de forma comparativa.

Previous issue date: 2014-06-09 / Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo / The object of study is the main Richard Dawkins ideas of atheism and this reception on
the brasilian atheists. Dawkins is one of the leading publishers and militant atheist
movement today, and despite his public facet - released worldwide on websites and in
books of recognized success - there are debates of the author , pertaining to academic
spaces and restricted to scientists, who do not always have congruent to its exhibitions
and public defenders . Internally the walls of science, Richard Dawkins can not find full
verification and corroboration of some central points of his theory that seem to support
its public arguments of atheism, such as the theory and the concept of memetic and
selection gene, ideas presented to the lay public one of his most famous books, The
Selfish Gene (2001a [1976]) and maintained publicly with the status of consolidated
science. We assume that the figures of scientist and militant atheist from Dawkins
mingle in front of the public imagination, which tends to lead his followers to
understand atheism as a more legitimate and true way that religious, being interpreted
that as a way to free choice and the latter undergoes a indoctrination. We believe,
however, that atheism can be understood as subject to natural cognitive mechanisms, as
religion. We take into account the political scene today is favorable to atheists, since we
observed a phenomenon we call "moral atheists revenge", a reversal of official
protection and legitimacy of the state, which has long been welcoming and protecting
the speech religious and today happened to be synchronized with atheistics claims,
being religious in an outdated and uncomfortable place in the democratic debate. These
hypotheses was investigated by means of confrontation between the scientific and
public speeches of Richard Dawkins and through a mixed questionnaire (with open and
closed questions ) that investigated 1022 atheists, noting whether and to what extent
atheism sample follows trends thinking of Richard Dawkins. We observed patterns of
response, three groups: Super Atheists, Moderates Atheists and Discrete Atheists.
Approximately 30% of the sample declare themselves as followers of the author, and
all, nearly 80% have knowledge about any point of the theory of Dawkins / O objeto de estudo consiste nas principais ideias ateístas de Richard Dawkins e na
Dawkins

Episteme do Inefável: razões da irracionalidade na univocidade mística / "Episteme of the Ineffable: reasons of irrationality in the mystical univocity"Altran, José 12 September 2014 (has links)

Previous issue date: 2014-09-12 / The dissertation suggests that an epistemology that listen to irrationality is relevant to face perennial obstacles in the philosophy of science, against which many objects collide. This seems to be an especially useful alternative in the sciences of religion, where we see ourselves immobilized by rationality when engaging researches that are related to their typically unspeakable phenomena. The mystical experience, often taken as the basis of religion, is a scenario that often brings amid its ineffability a sense of univocity - which is, precisely, the horizon of academic making. Would this ineffable hold an episteme? Following the publications of Marcelo Dascal, Henri Bergson and others, it is argued that, overcoming asymmetric impositions of epistemic legitimacy that inhibit controversies, we could find in bergsonian intuitionism a way toward these subjects as elusive as dangerous, since they put the rationality as a functional pillar for science and irrationality as a metaphysical pillar to reality itself. The transformations that the mystics brought to the world throughout history could be taken as signs that not only the irrationality was their compass, but also that it can bring extremely desirable outcomes for humanity, althought impelled by unspeakable epiphanies. Our aim is to gradually create lucid foundations for the study of alleged mystical univocities that invariably would become relative under the eyes of reason / A dissertação sugere que uma epistemologia que dê ouvidos à irracionalidade é pertinente para enfrentarmos entraves perenes na filosofia da ciência, frente aos quais muitos objetos colidem.

Previous issue date: 2014-09-05 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present research is aimed at reporting the testimonies of the participants of the
Sacred Circle Dances of Findhorn regarding the experience of the sacred, and defines the
role of this experience for the individual and for contemporary culture.
Sacred Circle Dances of Findhorn is the name given to the practice of the dancing
in round formation and other group dances, whether traditional or recently
choreographed, which are held according to a movement started by Bernhard Wosien,
with the spirit of the group work proposed by the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland, where
they started, developed, and spread to many countries. In Findhorn, such dances achieved
status of ritual and were focused on the experience of the sacred, although several
purposes are accepted. However, studies conducted so far have not been dedicated to the
basic focus, which is the path we choose to follow.
The theories of Carl G. Jung and Roy R. Rappaport were used as theoretical support
in what concerns the conceptions of sacred and ritual, besides taking into account some
analysis on the overview of the way of being religious in contemporary times.
The method used was qualitative, and data were gathered in the work field which
the researcher participated. The research was performed in a group formed especially for
this purpose and conducted by the researcher, in fifteen weekly meetings of two hours
each. The reports were audio-recorded and transcribed. Data were organized and handled
by building the technique of Lefèvre s Discourse of the Collective Subject. It was
revealed that the sacred was experienced in the group studied as a process consisting of
three elements. The first refers to the experience of two states of existence, that is, one
that connects to the everyday life and the other to a wider order. The second deals with
the experience of meeting a large body which the participants feel they are part of, as if
attached to a greater being configured as an experience of comprehensive unit. The third
element was present through the arrangement awareness of learning the meanings posed
by living, and elaborations on their own life can be extracted from it, thus guaranteeing
greater awareness.
For the individual, the experience of the sacred can enable the perception of another
personality, different from consciousness, with glimpses of the experience of wholeness
and unity, and some relationship with the self, which are important aspects for the process
of individuation. As for contemporary times, and with no necessity of joining some
religion, this kind of experience can mean the removal of the sanctification or projection
of the non-flexible context sacred, the replacement of the sacred in what is central and
unifies humanity in the sense eternity and truth. This scenario favors the ecosystem
adaptation that is essential for the continuity of human life.
The Sacred Circle Dance Findhorn is related to the round formation dances from
communities far from urban centers, probably born of sacred and religious elements. The
operation is in connection to the characteristics of the religious way of being in
contemporary times and in large cities. Practices of circle dances aimed only at numinous
states, mistakenly interpreted as if sacred, would lead to the understanding that the sacred
is something trivial and does not require some work of consciousness. In this manner, and
packed by late modernity trends, the sacred term may be used imprecisely / O objetivo principal da presente pesquisa é revelar nos depoimentos dos
vivência do sagrado, embora acolham propósitos diversos. Contudo, as pesquisas
pesquisa.
impreciso

Previous issue date: 2014-09-09 / This research focuses on Buddhist women ー members of the Brasil Soka Gakkai International (BSGI) who live in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceara, and also on those who live in Aparecida do Norte, Sao Paulo, in Brazil. The purpose was to find out how these women practices Buddhism within such Christianity-based societies. In Juazeiro city, cults are around Father Cicero. In Aparecida, Our Lady of Aparecida also attracts millions of people. Two cities which are so similiar, but, at the same time, so different when manifesting their religious ways one is popular; the other, institutionalized. Similarly, each local BSGI also differs in the way they develop their proselytist activities, which turns unique the participation by the women, and the organization s leaders speeches, especially in Juazeiro. The geographical distance between Juazeiro and Sao Paulo where the BSGI headquarters is located and also the little experience of the leadership in Juazeiro, based on this Buddhist organization s guidelines, seem to us the reasons for developing, in the district, a differentiated way of supporting the local members compared to the other BSGI local communities. At the same time, such differentiated way may be one of the causes for the decrease in the number of followers shown by the district in the last years, associated with the Womens Division s relationship problems and the abandonment of this faith by top leaders of such Division. In Aparecida, thanks to the support they receive and the more experienced leadership by the Womens Division of Sao Jose dos Campos, the Buddhist Aparecida women are favored with the existence of a stronger Soka Gakkai identity. The Christianity-Buddhism syncretism was born in Japan, country where the religious loyalty is not essential. The Buddhism as practiced in Brazil takes Christian elements. Although Japanese-based, the BSGI does not permit double belonging due to doctrinal reasons. Even though the religious loyalty is a requirement, it is not always possible, and the discourse differs a lot from the action of many women who were converted to Buddhism. The way they were converted their counsciouness level at conversion is one aspect that we present. As it is very difficult to create a Brazilian Buddhism , we propose a Buddhism of frontier , where everything may happen. The space between two fluid frontiers, Buddhism and Christianity, favors the transit through their domains, which are limited by cultures and identities. For this reason, when a frontier retreats, as it is happening with the Christianity s, others advance, as it is happening with the Pentecostalism s, and the same is happening with many other Buddhist schools. Among them, the BSGI is developing, but the religious spaces will always be limited. The BSGI Womens Division exists within this universe. In order to transit, even though indirectly, within these frontiers for they are in a country with an 80 per cent of Christian population , they need a social structure (provided by the Buddhist fellow members) and a religious one (provided by the Buddhist leaders). At the absence of one of them, these women will not be able to sustain their Buddhist practice / Essa pesquisa foi realizada com mulheres budistas de Juazeiro do Norte, CE, e Aparecida do Norte, SP, para conhecê-las e saber como as integrantes da Divisão Feminina da Associação Brasil Soka Gakkai Internacional desenvolvem a prática budista nesses locais marcadamente cristãos. O budismo praticado no Brasil assume elementos do cristianismo.

technology, promoted by computer systems, and the symbolic universe, created by
religious affiliation in which the phenomenon of trance exerts primary function. The
prerogative postulated for this work is that the expansion and multiplication of
realities arising from the intensification of the current use of technology gives the
individual communication skills beyond their biological capacity, which in parallel
pathways dialogues with religious experiences that involve contacts with
extraordinary universes. This argument is unsubstantiated by theorists who have
studied the subject and supported by individuals who make religious use of
ayahuasca for at least five years, who were subject of case study in this research / Essa dissertação objetiva estabelecer correlações entre a virtualidade
tecnológica, promovida pelos sistemas computacionais, e o universo simbólico,
criado pelas pertenças religiosas nas quais o fenômeno do transe exerce função
primordial.

After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, these authors aligned their speeches, which were already anti-religious, even more vehemently. Using the concept of Max Weber's disenchantment of the world, I tried to understand how they use science and other arguments against religion. Without forgetting the political struggle, I observe how the deconstruction of the religious sense has a goal of conversion. With theempty of the religious morality of theirs followers, I examine how these four authors construct a new worldview, at an individual and collective level, that would be the (re)enchantment of the world proposed by them. The replacement of religious values by the values of science and new-atheist values, places the new atheism not only on a collision course towards religions, but also causes this new movement to cross to the side of the religious field and become a new symbolic proposal with their own values / Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris e Christopher Hitchens deram início ao que hoje é chamado de neoateísmo.

Previous issue date: 2015-02-10 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / From the reading of the book Grande Sertão: Veredas by Guimarães Rosa this thesis aims to contribute for the understanding of relationship between food and religion. According to the author s notes where he talks about the presence of food in the country s dry countryside Sertão found in his classical novel, one can realize through Riobaldo s narrative two specific cuisines: the inner cuisine and the outer cuisine. Two different cuisines, within their own characteristics, establishing relationships between people and social groups. The menu is shown during the countryside s journey done by the group and in the sharing moments with those who they meet along their way. Because it is a search in the context of the Science of Religion discipline, the cuisine itself, the cooking practices and the sharing of the meal will be focused on its religious aspect as something that transcend the materiality , constituting in this way a sacred manifestation / appearance. This paper aims to state the importance of the distinct cuisines shown by Riobaldo in his narrative and how they work in their specifities, the utilization and consumption of ingredients. Thus the building of the Brazilian cuisine will allow an understanding of the significant kind of food that created the menu while a mystic from the countryside is perceived from the gestures that are shown and from the relationships that are established while sharing the food / A presente tese pretende a partir da leitura da obra Grande sertão: veredas, de Guimarães Rosa, contribuir para a compreensão das relações entre comida e religião.
