Multipath Mitigation in Frequency Selective Channels with an Emphasis on 5G Cellular Mobile Networks and Aeronautical Mobile Telemetry Applications

Arabian, Farah 16 March 2022 (has links)
This dissertation explores the role of polarization, combining, and equalization operating over frequency-selective channels to improve the reliability of wireless communications systems in terms of BER for two applications: 5G mobile networks (operating in the mmWave band and NR FR1), and aeronautical mobile telemetry systems (operating in L band). The equivalent discrete-time models for a variety of spatial combining techniques at 5G mmWave bands were derived to investigate the performance of co-located cross-polarized antenna elements when polarization diversity is used and also when a combination of spatial and cross-polarized antennas is exploited. In both cases, ML combining has the lowest BER and EPC produced the worst results. The use of co-located cross-polarized antenna elements also is examined in 5G FR1 assuming post-FFT processing of the two antenna element outputs in a mobile-to-mobile setting. The optimum strategy, in the ML sense, for incorporating the two antenna outputs is developed. The optimum combining strategy together with a FDE is compared to the traditional combining techniques: MRC, EGC, and SC, where the last two also require a FDE. Computer simulations performed over a stochastic channel model with polarization state information show that the difference between ML detection and MRC (the best performing methods) and SC with FDE (the worst performing method) is 2 dB. The similar results were observed with pilot based channel estimators, however the difference in this case was the presence of a BER floor at low values of $N_0$ and caused by channel estimation errors. In aeronautical mobile telemetry applications, the ML combiner is derived and shown to be equivalent to the summing the outputs of two filters matched to the channels in the horizontal and vertical polarization states. For historical reasons, current systems combine right-hand and left-hand circularly polarized antenna feed outputs using a MRC. To compare the two combining approaches, the aeronautical telemetry multipath channel was extended to include polarization state information. The simulation results for SOQPSK-TG with a CMA equalizer show that the post-equalizer BER for the two approaches is the same.

Användningen av BIM-verktyg och Lean-principer för optimerade tidsplaner i byggprojekt : En fallstudie av implementering / The use of BIM tools and Lean principles for optimized schedules in construction projects : A case study of implementation

Alkhatib, Yazeed, Alshammaa, Mohammad January 2023 (has links)
In the construction industry, delays in project deliveries are a common occurrence. In order to overcome this problem, a developed and accurate schedule is required which is followed by all parties concerned. Currently, traditional activity-based Gantt charts are primarily used. However, another scheduling method based on location shows promising potential for effectively managing delivery delays but has not received the same attention. Line of Balance (LOB) is a method within location-based scheduling (LBS), where the location is treated as a dimension in the production process, and it has proven to be a more efficient alternative than the Gantt chart. BIM tools, such as Vico Office, have proven effective in improving and streamlining LOB schedules by providing specialized tools that facilitate the creation of such schedules. Additionally, the use of BIM tools can facilitate the application of Lean thinking, which helps improve workflows. This study investigates how schedules are affected by the transition from activity-based to location-based schedules using the BIM tool Vico Office. Furthermore, it examines how the application of Lean principles such as “Visual Management” and “Reduced Batch Size” affect location-based schedules. The Gantt chart analysed in this study belongs to the construction company NCC and contains detailed information on the activities in House A. The LOB diagram generated by Vico's Schedule Planner aligns with the Lean principle of “Visual Management”. It has demonstrated an improved ability to detect empty areas, collisions, and discontinuous activities compared to Gantt charts. Additionally, the Lean principle of “Reduced Batch Size” was utilized to minimize waiting times between work groups. Despite the project exceeding the allotted time by two weeks, the conversion resulted in a location-based schedule that promoted continuous workflow, enhanced efficiency, and improved monitoring of the construction process.

Evaluation of the Applicability of the Interactive Highway Safety Design Model to Safety Audit of Two-Lane Rural Highways

Chuo, Kaitlin 13 March 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) is a suite of software developed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for monitoring and analyzing two-lane rural highways in the United States. As IHSDM is a fairly "young" program a limited amount of research has been conducted to evaluate its practicability and reliability. To determine if IHSDM can be adopted into the engineering decision making process in Utah, a study was conducted under the supervision of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to evaluate its applicability to audit safety of two-lane rural highways in Utah. IHSDM consists of six modules: Policy Review Module (PRM), Crash Prediction Module (CPM), Design Consistency Module (DCM), Traffic Analysis Module (TAM), Intersection Review Module (IRM), and Driver/Vehicle Module (DVM) (still under construction). Among the six modules, two were chosen for evaluation because of their applicability to audit safety of the two-lane rural highways in Utah, namely CPM and IRM. For the evaluation of the CPM, three two-lane rural highway sections were selected. The results of this evaluation show that the CPM can produce reasonably reliable crash predictions if appropriate input data, especially alignment data, reflect the existing conditions at reasonable accuracy and engineering judgment is used. Using crash records available from UDOT's crash database and CPM's crash prediction capability, UDOT's traffic and safety engineers can locate "hot spots" for detailed safety audit, thus making the safety audit task more focused and effective. Unlike the CPM, the outputs of the IRM are qualitative and include primarily suggestions and recommendations. They will help the traffic and safety engineers identify what to look for as they visit the sites, such as a lack of stopping sight distance and a lack of passing sight distance. The interpretation of the IRM requires knowledge of various aspects of highway design, familiarity with A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and experience in traffic engineering. Based on the findings of the study, it is concluded that the CPM and IRM of IHSDM could be a useful tool for engineering decision-making during safety audits of two-lane rural highways. But the outputs from these modules demand knowledge and experience in highway design. It is recommended that the other modules of IHSDM be tested to fully appreciate the capability of IHSDM. The software can be a knowledgebased program that can help novice engineers to learn how to design safe two-lane rural highways.

A study of the dynamics of developing sustained church planting movements in Asian nations, based on lessons learned in the 2004-2005 NEXT conferences in East Asia

Smith, Stephen Robert 30 November 2007 (has links)
This study attempts to be an exhaustive analysis of the dynamics of developing sustained church planting movements in Asian nations, based on lessons learned in the 2004-2005 NEXT conferences in East Asia. Principles are being discovered and methodologies developed in East Asia on how to build sustained church planting movements around the world. To understand these, consolidate learning, and apply that learning in a variety of crosscultural ministry contexts, a series of conferences were hosted by my wife and myself. Eight week-long ”NEXT conferences” were held, consisting of sixty experienced strategy coordinators plus eleven regional supervisors, to wrestle with these issues. This paper is based on the findings of these conferences; specifically, that there are divine principles and particular methodologies which enable missionaries to cooperate with the Holy Spirit in developing sustained church planting movements that saturate ethno-linguistic people groups and cities of Asia, and ultimately, the rest of the world. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology) / M.Th. / Civil construction is characterized by its complexity and uncertainty, because its processes occur simultaneously and interdependently, inserted in a dynamic, non-linear and unpredictable environment. It is necessary throughout the life cycle an evaluation and management of the risk factors, thus enabling the elaboration of prevention strategies and opportunities. Therefore, this research had as objective the probabilistic evaluation of the risks in the terms of a vertical construction project, located in the city of Belém / Pa. The strategic objective of the stakeholders was the completion of the work in the 15-month period and a forecast of direct and indirect costs of R $ 8,808,614.04. In this way, the probability of the project to occur within the desired period (15 months) was evaluated through two PERT / CPM networks, called scenario 01 and scenario 02. Given that scenario 01 was developed considering the 15-month period and scenario 02 developed according to the unit composition tables of term and costs, which is called the pessimistic scenario of the work. Thus, the results of the evaluation showed that the project had a 76.79% probability of occurring in 22 months, with a possible budget increase of 35.18%, close to R $ 11,907,293.46. Therefore, the PERT / CPM methodology is satisfactory, since the objectives of this research were achieved. However, the network is incompatible with the contextual reality of the project, since construction projects have other interacting variables that influence time and costs and are impossible to evaluate with the PERT / CPM network.

Inspired by González Rey’s Theory of Subjectivity, in this study I searched to investigate the motivation of two deaf to participate in a class of Club Researcher Mirim (CPM) of the Goeldi Museum (MPEG). In this theoretical perspective, the motivation is conceived as a subjective production. Subjectivity, simultaneously social and individual, is studied from a qualitative approach, that values the individual cases, the dialogical and constructiveinterpretative character of the information construction. I conducted research in a context of child scientific initiation, with a class of 12 children and two deaf, in a space of non-formal education where everybody learned Libras. During the academic year 2012, I observed and recorded the 31 meetings of the class. At the end of the year, I conducted interviews with those responsible for the children and with junior researchers listeners, using an audio recorder. I conducted interviews with deaf students in sign language also. These were recorded and later transcribed and analyzed. For the construction of the indicators of deaf motivation I considered the perspectives of family, colleagues and deaf people. From these indicators, I conclude that deaf students are motivated to participate in the CPM. Both showed similar Indicators of interest. They do not want to miss or be late for meetings; want to learn / teach Libras, make friends, learn and continue the CPM while they can; enjoy the activities and physical space. But their subjective senses configurations are different in relation to Libras and sciences learning, their relationships with colleagues and plans for future. Participate in the inclusive class of CPM contributes to the formation of friendships and also for the learning of the deaf, in a different way from what happens in school.

Analytical and empirical analyses on fixed asset write-offs

Siggelkow, Lena 05 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The objective of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is to provide useful information to the users of financial statements to assist in making economic decisions. To be useful, information has to be relevant and reliable, but the reliability of information suffers when the guidelines for the reporting of specific issues are not clear and managerial discretion arises. Write-offs are one of those accounting issues that are regularly related to earnings management. By now it is seen as common knowledge that write-offs, especially those on goodwill, do not reflect declines in asset value; rather, they are used as a device to manipulate financial reports. However, there is a striking lack of grounded theoretical research that can confirm this assessment. The aim of this dissertation is to provide valuable analytical and empirical insights on fixed asset write-offs under IFRS. In a first step, the practical implementation of IAS 36 in Europe has to be analyzed, which is best done empirically. Based on the findings from these empirical surveys, the most substantial questions remaining are subject to an in-depth analytical discussion. Since IAS 36 entails different measurement issues that have their origins in finance theory, this dissertation also aims to introduce some basic techniques from theoretical finance to accounting research. Lastly, as the analyses presented in this dissertation do not cover all open questions on fixed asset write-offs, the author hopes to encourage further research on this important topic.

Studies in this area allow you to develop pigments with more advanced properties and qualities to be used in the industrial context. Studies on synthesis and characterization of cobalt aluminate has been widely researched, cobalt aluminate behavior at different temperatures of calcinations, highlighting especially the temperatures of 700, 800 and 900? C that served as a basis in the development of this study, using the method of polymerization of complex (CPM), economic, and this method applied in ceramic pigment synthesis. The procedure was developed from a fractional factorial design 2 (5-2) in order to optimize the process of realization of the cobalt aluminate (CoAl2O4), having as response surfaces the batch analysis data of Uv-vis spectroscopy conducted from the statistic software 7.0, for this were chosen five factors as input variables: citric acid (stoichiometric manner), puff or pyrolysis time (h), temperature (? C), and calcinations (? C/min), at levels determined for this study. By applying statistics in the process of obtaining the CoAl2O4 is possible the study of these factors and which may have greater influence in getting the synthesis. The pigments characterized TG/DSC analyses, and x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDS) in order to establish the structural and morphological aspects of pigment CoAl2O4, among the factors studied it were found to statically with increasing calcinations temperature 700?< 800 <900 ?C, the bands of Uv-vis decrease with increasing intensity of absorbance and that with increasing time of puff or pyrolysis (h) there is an increase in bands of Uv-vis proportionally, the generated model set for the conditions proposed in this study because the coefficient of determination can explain about 99.9% of the variance (R?), response surfaces generated were satisfactory, so it s possible applicability in the ceramics industry of pigments / Na ind?stria cer?mica utilizam-se cada vez mais pigmentos de natureza predominantemente inorg?nica.
