Exploring Teacher Education in Writing Programs Through the Lens of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy

Parva Panahi lazarjani (13175301) 01 August 2022 (has links)

The highly diverse character of US universities provides an opportunity for writing programs to (re)examine the extent to which their current administrative, curricular, and pedagogical practices support a growing student population with unique linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds, resources, and needs. This dissertation research aimed to explores the ways in which writing programs address the increasing diversity in writing pedagogy education, as a key component of writing program administration work. The main goal of this research was to investigate how writing program administrators and teacher educators in my study context represent our current reality regarding engagement with the increased linguistic and cultural diversity in the activity of teaching to the newest members of the writing program, i.e., graduate teaching assistants. Analyses of data collected through semi-structured interviews and educational materials suggest that while issues surrounding diversity and multilingual students have been addressed in writing pedagogy education, there is still room for more work, especially integrative, (trans)disciplinary diversity work that will help turn the graduate composition practicum, as the main context for writing pedagogy education in writing programs, into a space where new writing teachers can navigate diversity in order to learn how to actively engage with and pedagogically respond to it in their writing instruction in the era of superdiversity.

[en] INTERNATIONALIZATION POLICY OF THE BRAZILIAN AUDIVISUAL IN QUESTION / [pt] POLÍTICA DE INTERNACIONALIZAÇÃO DO AUDIOVISUAL BRASILEIRO EM QUESTÃO

ANDREA GOMES STELET 03 April 2020 (has links)
[en] In order to defend the relevance of an internationalization policy for the audiovisual sector within the Brazilian Federal Government, this study intends to identify the impasses and impacts of the construction of this policy, since the year 2010, and to analyze, to what extent, such internationalization policy articulates the general design of the public policy of the audiovisual sector and contributes to the development of this sector. The research - based on the analysis of the content of articles, books, interviews and official documents - identified two main impasses faced in this area in Brazil. They are: the impasse in the insufficiency of investment in internationalization, in disarray with the copious financing in film production for a potential occupation of the domestic market; and the impasse over the lack of articulation between the principles and projects of the Cultural and the Foreign Trade policies. The results allow inferring reasons why Brazil does not present a significant performance in the international trade around the audiovisual; make it possible to draw new possible explanations for the fact that the Brazilian audience remains unaware of the sustainability of the national production itself. In summary: in order to protect and promote Brazilian culture expressed in the audiovisual sector, it has become essential to integrate public policies that effectively qualify and expand the circulation of these cultural goods and services beyond Brazil, through internationalization.

"Det är lite främmande"- Interkulturell pedagogik på monokulturella förskolor : En kvalitativ studie om förskollärares beskrivningar av interkulturell pedagogik på monokulturella förskolor / “It’s a bit unfamiliar”- Intercultural pedagogy in monocultural preschools : A qualitative study of preschool teachers descriptions of interculturalpedagogy in monocultural preschools

Wikström, Karin, Hagberg, Maria January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to describe preschool teachers' understanding ofintercultural pedagogy in monocultural preschools. This is based on children'sright to develop an understanding of the strengths that exist in the multiculturalsociety that Sweden is today. This is a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with eight preschool teachers. We have used aphenomenographic approach as a starting point to highlight preschool teachers'descriptions, interpretations and perceptions of working with interculturalpedagogy in monocultural preschools. The phenomenography also formed thebasis of the analysis work, where the central concepts of outcome space, variation, perceive and second-order category were used as support. The results are presented through the outcome spaces; understanding ofintercultural pedagogy and descriptions of work with intercultural pedagogy. The results reveal a knowledge gap, where uncertainty about the phenomenonof intercultural pedagogy dominates. On the other hand, it shows that preschoolteachers are curious and want to develop more knowledge and understandingof the phenomenon. This is made visible through a demand for clearguidelines, methods and materials as well as collegial cooperation. Theconclusion of the study is that there is cultural awareness, curiosity andwillingness. However, most of them assume that there is a need for amulticultural starting point in the group of children, to enable interculturalpedagogy in monocultural preschools.

文化多樣性公約對於GATS視聽服務之影響 / The Impact of Convention on Cultural Diversity on the Audiovisual Services under the GATS

Lai, Chih-Lun Unknown Date (has links)
On 20 October 2005, the UNESCO General Conference approved the “Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.” Judging by the negotiating history, “cultural diversity” appears to be the continuation of “cultural exception” invoked by the European Communities under the GATS negotiations during the Uruguay Round. Therefore, after the Convention is approved, free trade supporters worry that the convention might restrict trade and conflict with the GATS rules. On the other hand, cultural protectionists argue that the Convention has merits in moving forward “cultural exception,” i.e. to prohibit the application of the GATS rules on the audiovisual services. The objective of the thesis is to analyze the impact of the Convention on the audiovisual services under the GATS. The thesis first studies the rules under the Convention and discusses potential conflicts between the Convention and the GATS in terms of audiovisual services. Considering both the conflicts of norms and current negotiations, the thesis attempts to assess the impact of the Convention on the audiovisual services and forecast the future of negotiations on the audiovisual services under the GATS. The obligations of the Convention may not be easy to be interpreted as trade restrictions or discriminations because States Parties can mostly reserve their rights to perform. On the other hand, GATS rules is so flexible that WTO Members need not make specific commitments under the GATS. Accordingly, the possibility of conflicts is not high. Though the rights of the Convention might be contradictory to the obligations of the GATS, States Parties can choose to perform their obligations of the GATS rather than exercise their rights of the Convention in order to preclude the existence of the conflicts. The Convention only has limited impact on the GATS. In addition, the Convention provides a forum of negotiations on cultural issues so that it might smooth over WTO Member’s concern with cultural protection and remove their doubts of liberalization on the basis of cultural protection. Judging from this, the Convention can give a boost to the liberalization of audiovisual services and facilitate the negotiations. In light of the fact that there is no general exception clauses of cultural protection under the GATS to harmonize the two international instruments, this thesis suggests that “Ministerial Decision” be adopted to request WTO Members to take relevant rules of the Convention into consideration when interpreting and applying the GATS rules in order to achieve the goal of mutual supportiveness between the Convention and the GATS.

A psycho – analysis of bereavement in Xhosa, Zulu and Tswana cultures

Yawa, Sibongile Ndileka 11 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the process of bereavement in the Xhosa, Zulu and Tswana cultures with participants including three cultural experts and a bereaved family from each ethnic group. Data was collected using semi – structured interviews mainly in the participants’ homes. Analysis was used by comparing and contrasting the information gathered. Empirical research findings revealed that the process in the African culture specifically in these three ethnic groups is different from the western culture as stated in the literature. The literature review findings show that the western culture’s processes of bereavement seem focused in the intrapersonal processes. However, the African Black cultures seem to be focused more on interpersonal processes of bereavement. Recommendations are made in the study on how a western trained Educational Psychologist can approach a bereaved client coming from these ethnic groups. Recommendations are also made for Educators and Parents. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Guidance and Counselling)

Implications of individualistic and collectivistic orientations for management development

Piek, Johannes Jacobus 06 1900 (has links)
The Apartheid Philosophy resulted in creating a heterogenous society in South Africa, with each group having its own distinctive culture and value-orientation. Organizational values, influenced by personal value-orientation employed by White managers, could be challenged by appointing members of this heterogenous society into positions previously held by White managers, thereby emphasizing the need for congruence between organizational and personal value-orientation. The literature study revealed not only the existence of both Individualism and Collectivism, but the co-existence thereof in individual value-orientation and the existence of Ubuntuism as another form of collectivism - the latter being analogous to humanism. Through this empirical study the value-orientations of managers from either Black or White cultural backgrounds, were assessed, using a value-orientation questionnaire. The findings of the present study, although inconclusive, demonstrated that Black and White managers do not differ significantly in terms of their value-orientation at work. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial Psychology)

The role of the school guidance counsellor in multicultural education

Nair, Meenatchie Shunmugam 11 1900 (has links)
with the emergence of multiculturalism and the opening up of schools to all races in South Africa, the education system is undergoing enormous changes. Educators and pupils are faced with unfamiliar cultures, languages and backgrounds. This diversity has resulted in a need for schools to evolve I with the changing circumstances. The complexities associated with racial integration necessitates an educational programme suitable to meet the I needs of our culturally diverse society. A change strategy is necessary to provide teachers with a multicultural approach to education which is ultimately aimed at providing pupils o e cultures with equal opportunities to learn and succeed in a multicultural society. It is the concern of this dissertation to examine the role and function of the school guidance counsellor in attempting to meet the needs of educators, and pupils coming from different cultural, ethnic, racial and socio-economic backgrounds.

Ben Rhouma, Leyla 12 1900 (has links)
The thesis is developed in the current “in vogue” speech on cultural diversity. The main objective of our purpose consists in understanding the orientation of an international organization regarding the management of its cultural diversity. We think that, according to the change that modifies the socio-demographic configurations of the organizational context, it would be interesting to study an organization for which diversity is a tradition of its functioning. Our subject of study is an international organization affiliated to Unesco. The latter is recognized for its position, which values and protects the cultures. The field of knowledge is bi-disciplinary. The first one is forged in the theories of management on diversity. The second field comes from “Cross-Cultural Studies”. The methodological approach is also diversified in order to identify three levels of analysis of the cultural diversity in the Organisation. First, we have realized a historic study, based on the analysis of chosen articles from Unesco’s archives. It aims to reveal the evolution of the global discourse on cultural diversity, since its creation. Then, to better understand the internal organisational discourse about its cultural diversity, an analysis of the content of a “halo” of the internal policies takes place. This analysis allows us to understand the value of cultural diversity in a particular period. Finally, the stories of the actors of cultural diversity bring a rich description and complete the analysis with the interpretation of these actors of the management of the cultural diversity in the Organization. Additional elements of search are brought in the thesis and they are a part of the process of the analysis of the global orientation of the Organisation on the cultural diversity. We bring clarifications to the terminology of cultural diversity though an analysis of its use on the organisational literature. Besides, the thesis clarifies the notion of international organisation and proposes a description of the unesquian context defined by its internal cultural diversity. All the examined levels allowed highlighting a double observation. On one hand the paradox between the three levels; Global-organisational-individual. On the other hand, the neutrality of the practices of management of the cultural diversity and the request of recognition of the cultural identities, implicitly formulated by them. In conclusion, we provide the contributions and limitations of the thesis and we propose research possibilities.
