Redes migratorias de mujeres y espacios decolonizadores, estudio de etnografía visual: Colectiva "Mujeres con voz-Valencia"Naranjo Ayala, María José 29 November 2021 (has links)
[ES] La "colonialidad" es un ethos cultural no superado, tanto en España como en las antiguas Colonias. En el marco migratorio español, donde existe un flujo permanente de personas provenientes principalmente de África y América Latina, vislumbrar la resignificación contemporánea de las relaciones coloniales fundamentadas en la desigualdad entre el Norte Global y el Sur Global, nos permite entender al racismo como un sistema de ficciones y una matriz organizadora de poder con implicaciones a nivel económico, político, social, cultural, histórico y epistémico.
El creciente movimiento antirracista en España busca visibilizar y erradicar este sistema de exclusión, luchando por los derechos de miles de personas migrantes provenientes del Sur Global que habitan en este territorio. Para esto, retoman reflexiones dadas desde la teoría y feminismos decoloniales con el propósito de hacer visibles las relaciones de poder desiguales, con herencia colonial, que operan y afectan las vidas de las personas migrantes y racializadas en España.
Este trabajo de investigación etnográfica busca entender a las redes migratorias de mujeres en el estado español desde el trabajo y experiencias de una colectiva de corte feminista, antirracista y decolonial que opera en Valencia, "Mujeres con Voz". Donde mujeres provenientes del Sur Global trabajan por romper con los estereotipos y violencias que median sus experiencias, para construirse como sujetos políticos activos en su nueva sociedad de recepción. Esta investigación busca entender cómo se construye y qué permite esta red migratoria, además de evidenciar qué significa para este grupo ser una mujer migrante y racializada en Valencia. Para esto, se harán visibles las estrategias y espacios de resistencia decolonial que ha generado este grupo en un contexto migratorio complejo, donde el aparataje estatal, legal y los paisajes mediáticos locales y globales, generan estereotipos migratorios que limitan sus vidas y pleno desarrollo. / [CAT] La "colonialitat" és un ethos cultural no superat tant a Espanya com a les antigues Colònies. En el marc migratori espanyol, on hi ha un flux permanent de persones provinents principalment d'Àfrica i Amèrica Llatina, albirar la resignificació contemporània de les relacions colonials fonamentades en la desigualtat entre el Nord Global i el Sud Global, ens permet entendre a el racisme com un sistema de ficcions i una matriu organitzadora de poder amb implicacions a nivell econòmic, polític, social, cultural, epistèmic i històric.
El creixent moviment antiracista a Espanya busca visibilitzar i eradicar aquest sistema d'exclusió, lluitant pels drets de milers de persones migrants provinents de el Sud Global que habiten en aquest territori. Per això, reprenen reflexions donades des de la teoria i feminismes decoloniales amb el propòsit de fer visibles les relacions de poder desiguals, amb herència colonial, que operen i afecten les vides de les persones migrants i racialitzades a Espanya.
Aquest treball de recerca etnogràfica busca entendre a les xarxes migratòries de dones a l'estat espanyol des del treball i experiències d'una col·lectiva de tall feminista, antiracista i decolonial que opera a València, "Dones amb Veu". On dones provinents de Sud Global treballen per trencar amb els estereotips i violències que intervenen seves experiències, per construir-se com a subjectes polítics actius en la seva nova societat de recepció. Aquesta investigació busca entendre com es construeix i què permet aquesta xarxa migratòria, a més d'evidenciar què significa per a aquest grup ser una dona migrant i racialitzada a València. Per això, es faran visibles les estratègies i espais de resistència decolonial que ha generat aquest grup en un context migratori complex, on el aparells de l'Estat, legal i els paisatges mediàtics locals i globals generen estereotips migratoris que limiten les vides d'aquestes dones. / [EN] "Coloniality" is a current cultural ethos that operates both in Spain and in the former Colonies. This influences the Spanish migratory framework, which has a permanent flow of people coming mainly from Africa and Latin America. To understand the contemporary resignifications of these colonial relations based on the inequality between the Global North and the Global South, allows us to understand racism as a system of fictions and an organizing matrix of power with implications at the economic, political, social, cultural, historical and epistemic levels.
The growing anti-racist movement in Spain seeks to make visible and eradicate this system of exclusion, fighting for the rights of thousands of migrants from the Global South who live in this territory. For this, they take up reflections given from decolonial theory and feminisms with the purpose of making visible the unequal power relations, with colonial heritage, that operate and affect the lives of migrants and racialized people in Spain.
This ethnographic research seeks to understand the migratory networks of women in the Spanish state from the work and experiences of a feminist, anti-racist and decolonial collective that operates in Valencia, "Mujeres con Voz". Where women from the Global South work to break the stereotypes and violence that mediate their experiences and construct themselves as active political subjects in their new society. This research seeks to understand how this migratory network is developed and what it allows, and show what it means for this group to be a migrant and racialized woman in Valencia. The strategies, and spaces of decolonial resistance generated by this group will become visible in a complex migratory context, where the state, legal, and local and global media landscapes generate migratory stereotypes that limit the lives of these women. / Naranjo Ayala, MJ. [pt] Nesta tese, olho para a Natureza como mais uma dimensão sobre a qual a
colonialidade incide. Para isso, proponho dois movimentos teóricos. O primeiro é
aprofundar a noção de colonialidade da Natureza, por entender que mesmo em
um movimento crítico como o pensamento decolonial a Natureza é posta à margem,
sendo necessário, portanto, reposicioná-la e compreender como a colonialidade
incide sobre ela. O segundo é apresentar o Contrato Ambiental, inspirado
principalmente pelo Contrato Racial de Charles Mills, enquanto um contrato
subversivo que realça como o subjugo da Natureza é relevante para o domínio
social, político e epistemológico colonial. Ambos os movimentos são relacionados
com a disciplina de Relações Internacionais, posicionando este texto como uma
proposta de pensar o internacional. Para essa análise, as metodologias escolhidas
são a interseccionalidade, justamente por permitir a análise da incidência de
hierarquias em mais de uma dimensão das vidas humanas e não-humanas, e a
cartografia, que permite que a pesquisa seja afetada pelo campo e que o caminho

entre grupos humanos. / [en] In this dissertation, I look at Nature as another dimension on which coloniality affects. To this end, I propose two theoretical movements. The first is to deepen the notion of coloniality of Nature, understanding that even in a critical movement such as decolonial thinking, Nature is placed on the margins, making it necessary, therefore, to reposition it and understand how coloniality affects it. The second is to present the Environmental Contract, inspired mainly by Charles Mills s Racial Contract, as a subversive contract that highlights how the subjugation of Nature is relevant to the colonial social, political and epistemological domain. Both movements are related to the discipline of International Relations, positioning this text as a proposal for thinking about the international. For this analysis, the methodologies chosen are intersectionality, precisely because it allows the analysis of the incidence of hierarchies in more than one dimension of human and non-human lives, and cartography, which allows research to be affected by the field and the path also be traced while walking. Finally, I start from the knowledge cultivated about the climate crisis with the intention of proposing a break with the hegemony of the social, political and productive organization centered on the state, capitalism and coloniality-modernity, without, however, believing in a return to the past and without romanticizing non-modern forms of organization, having the peasant movement of struggle for land, especially the Landless Workers Movement (MST), and its international counterpart, La Via Campesina, as decolonial and intersectional practices of social, political and epistemological transformation, as well as transformation of the relations between humans and Nature and between human groups. / [es] En esta tesis miro a la Naturaleza como otra dimensión sobre la que incide
la colonialidad. Para ello propongo dos movimientos teóricos. El primero es
profundizar la noción de colonialidad de la Naturaleza, entendiendo que incluso
en un movimiento crítico como el pensamiento decolonial, la Naturaleza se coloca
al margen, siendo necesario, por tanto, reposicionarla y comprender cómo la
colonialidad la afecta. El segundo es presentar el Contrato Ambiental, inspirado

Dismembering and re-membering in J.M. Coetzee's selected fiction: a decolonial approachNdumiso, Ncube 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and isiZulu / The present study deploys Ngugi wa Thiongo’s (2009) decolonial concepts of
dismembering and re-membering to critically explore J. M Coetzee’s selected fiction. In
my reading of the novels Waiting for the Barbarians, Foe and Disgrace, I relate
concepts of dismembering and re-membering to decoloniality. In the rendition of Ngugi,
dismembering refers to the displacement and dispossession of the colonised, and their
mental colonisation through cultural imperialism. Re-membering becomes the
decolonial effort to undo physical and psychological dismembering. In the same way in
which, since the Berlin Conference of 1884/5, Africa was divided, mapped and
colonised, the cultures and histories of Africans were dismembered and dominated.
Concerns for the land are expressed in the mapping and the confiscation of land which
is depicted in the native’s desert dwellings in Waiting for the Barbarians, Cruso’s
clearing of the land in Foe and Petrus’s taking over of Lucy’s farm in Disgrace.
Furthermore, Coetzee’s use of language is one important narrative strategy that is
explored to ascertain how Coetzee negates or speaks for, of and about the colonised
through the narrator focaliser. This study reveals the reflexive nature of the selected
novels and seeks answers to the question of why Coetzee tends to make his “black”
characters voiceless and rootless (and sometimes nameless)? Is Coetzee suggesting
that they have been silenced by history, by colonialism, or is he suggesting that he, the
author, has no right to speak on their behalf? In the mode of writing and story-telling, is
Coetzee suggesting the impossibility of the coloniser to speak for the colonised or, in
speaking of them, does he give the servant characters a voice and can this voice be
theirs, or can it be considered reliable? Is Coetzee presenting the power of passivity as
a means of resistance and re-membering? This study, from a decolonial perspective,
engages with the complex way Coetzee handles voice and the question of the agency
of the colonised. / Hierdie studie benut Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o (2009) se dekoloniale begrippe van verdeling en
herindeling in ʼn kritiese beskouing van J. M. Coetzee se geselekteerde fiksie. In my
vertolking van die romans Waiting for the Barbarians, Foe en Disgrace, bring ek die
begrippe van verdeling en herindeling in verband met dekolonialisme. In Ngũgĩ se vertolking
verwys verdeling na die verplasing en onteiening van die gekoloniseerdes, en hul geestelike
kolonisering deur kulturele imperialisme. Herindeling word die dekoloniale poging om
fisiese en sielkundige herindeling ongedaan te maak. Op dieselfde manier wat Afrika verdeel,

A critical discourse analysis of strategies used to construct South African initiation schools in online news reports and discussion forumsFynn, Angelo 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the discourse strategies used to construct initiation schools in online media and message boards. The focus is on understanding the tensions that come with enacting traditional practices in the face of modernity and its associated cultural expectations. The thesis describes the manner in which these tensions are constructed in text by the media in news reports and participants in discussion forums. While there is still debate around whether the internet will revolutionise public participation and create a digital utopia; the internet is acknowledged as one of the widest reaching sources of information and entertainment. Specifically, the internet provides a platform to challenge the traditionally top-down communication between the elite, who have privileged access to the media, and the general public, who were previously constructed as passive recipients of information. Using the male circumcision initiation rite, this thesis examines how the South African public discursively constructs the epistemic location of African traditions in South Africa. The study drew on a sample of news articles from the News24 site, the largest news site in South Africa, ranging from January 2008 to December 2013. A corpus of 62 articles were analysed using the Critical Discourse Analysis technique described by Teun van Dijk. The findings of the thesis were that the initiation rite is used as a rhetorical tool to argue for the abandonment of African cultural practices in favour of modern, Western influenced beliefs and values. The findings also indicate that the initiation rite is reduced to the act of circumcision in the media by focusing on the injury and deaths of the initiates and excluding the meaning of the rite as a meaningful cultural practice. The conclusion of the thesis challenges the epistemicide committed against the male circumcision initiation rite from within the Decolonial school of thought, which critically examines everyday interaction for universalising, normative language that aims to commit cultural epistemicide to reinforce the white, male, European, Christian traditions of masculinity. / Psychology / D. Re-imagining Ogun in selected Nigerian plays: a decolonial readingOluwasuji, Olutoba Gboyega 06 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Through an in-depth analysis of selected texts, this study engages with the ways in which Ogun is reimagined by recent selected Nigerian playwrights. Early writers from this country, influenced by their modernist education, misrepresented Ogun by presenting only his so-called negative attributes. Contemporary writers are reconceptualising him; it is the task of this thesis to demonstrate how they are doing so from a decolonial perspective. These alleged attributes represent Ogun as a wicked, bloodthirsty, arrogant and hot tempered god who only kills and makes no positive contribution to the Yoruba community. The thesis argues that the notion of an African god should be viewed from an Afrocentric perspective, not a Eurocentric one, which might lead to violence or misrepresentation of him. The dialogue in the plays conveys how the playwrights have constructed their main characters as Ogun representatives in their society. For example, Mojagbe and Morontonu present Balogun, the chief warlord of their different community; both characters exhibit Ogun features of defending their community.
The chosen plays for this study are selected based on different notions of Ogun, the Yoruba god of iron and war, presented by the playwrights. A closer look at the primary materials this thesis explores suggests Ogun’s strong connection with rituals and cultural festivals. These plays exemplify African ritual theatre. Being a member of the Yoruba ethnic group, I have considerable knowledge of how festivals are performed. The Ogun festival is an annual celebration among the Yoruba, where African idioms of puppetry, masquerading, music, dance, mime, invocation, evocation and several elements of drama are incorporated into the performances. The selected plays critiqued in this thesis are Mojagbe (Ahmed Yerima, 2008), Battles of Pleasure (Peter Omoko, 2009), Hard Choice (Sunnie Ododo, 2011), and Morontonu (Alex Roy-Omoni, 2012). No in-depth exploration has previously been undertaken into the kinds of textual and ideological identities that Ogun adopts, especially in the selected plays. Therefore, using a decolonial epistemic perspective, this study offers a critical examination of how the selected Nigerian playwrights between the years 2008 and 2012 have constructed Ogun, the Yoruba god of iron. Such a perspective assists in delinking interpretations from the modernised notions mentioned above, in which Ogun is sometimes a paradoxical god. Coloniality is responsible for such misinterpretation; the employed theoretical framework is used to interrogate these notions.
The research project begins with a general introduction locating Ogun in Yoruba mythology, which forms the background to how the god is being constructed in Yorubaland. Also included

in this first chapter is a discussion on a decolonial perspective, the principles of coloniality, the aims and objective of the study, and the relevant literature review. Thereafter, chapter two focuses on Battles of Pleasure and argues that the play re-imagines Ogun as a god of peace and harvest as opposed to a god of war and destruction. Chapter three discusses how Ododo’s Hard Choice reconceptualises Ogun as a god of justice, in contrast to him being interpreted as a god who engages in reckless devastation of life. Chapter four explores Ogun’s representation in Yerima’s Mojagbe as a reformer who gives human beings ample time to change from their wayward course to a course that he approves. In chapter five, Ogun’s reconception as a remover of obstacles in Roy-Omoni’s Morontonu is examined. The study concludes with a discussion on how Africans should delink themselves from a modernist Eurocentric perspective and think from an Afrocentric locus of enunciation. / English Studies / D. Text in English with abstracts in English, isiZulu, Northern Sotho and Tshivenda / This study explores the phenomenon of stokvels − membership-based savings schemes providing for the social and financial wellbeing of their members as well as entertainment (Lukhele, 1990). The purpose of the study is to identify the existence of a different kind of economy that is not informed by the capitalist logic. The study aims to examine the values that underpin stokvels and to locate them within a particular socio-cultural and historical context. This is a qualitative research study and my research approach included fieldwork, participant observation, in-depth interviews and the procedure of genealogy. The study, employing these methods, has enabled me to draw a connection between the Khumalo clan - the generation of Mzilikazi Khumalo who was a friend to King Shaka and is argued to have played a pivotal role in building what is known as the Zulu nation today – and my uncles. In the six months I spent at Esihlengeni, a small village in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal, I interviewed 27 people, attended two funerals, one family ritual and conducted two focus group discussions with stokvel women. I found that stokvels are not centred on an African epistemic framework as anticipated in the problem statement but are still within the capitalist logic of profit and thus do not draw from the community’s traditional values. While stokvels are informed by the dominant capitalist logic, the community of Esihlengeni still draws from their cosmological worldview that provides them with a different understanding of the economy that is centred on cattle – the means that allow them to perform rituals that guarantee protection and continuity of life - to make sense of their world. Their insistence on the importance of cattle in this community is their cry to be allowed to exist and be recognised as humans that can think for themselves. I conclude by arguing that to understand this community correctly, we need to take the ontological difference seriously that we cannot possibly have only one way of existing. The community of Esihlengeni thus provides us with the economic theory that is centred on life in its totality – that takes both the physical and metaphysical into consideration to ensure the continuity of life. Speaking back : expanding paradigms in Middle East filmStubbs, Evelyn 02 1900 (has links)
This thesis undertakes a study of four films, directed by Arab directors from Palestine, Lebanon, America and the United Arab Emirates, and argues that these works speak back to the negative representation of Arabs in mainstream Hollywood films. It examines the methods these directors have deployed to contribute to a consciousness on a cultural level. These include the films Amreeka (dir. Dabis, 2009: USA, National Geographic Entertainment), Paradise Now (dir. Abu-Assad, 2005: USA, Warner Bros), West Beirut (dir. Doueiri, 1998: Belgium, France, Norway, Lebanon: 38 Production) and City of Life (dir. Mostafa, 2009: UAE: Filmworks). I argue that these films speak back to the representation of Arabs created by Hollywood. In all the films I analyse the representation of the characters, which allows viewers into their frames of reference and makes them relatable. The characters are ordinary people facing the situations of everyday life in various settings. Whether it is the limitation of their geographical location while living under occupation in Palestine as in Amreeka and Paradise Now, emigrating to America and coping with xenophobia as in Amreeka, living in a country exploding as civil war breaks out as in West Beirut, or adjusting to multiculturalism as in City of Life, filmmakers are allowing viewers into the lives of Arabs, representing them in terms of all their successes, failures, vulnerabilities and excesses. They are human beings with the same concerns as all humanity, for peace in their countries, the stability of their societies and the safety of their families. My investigation analyses the films through the theoretical lenses of Stuart Hall’s theory of representation (2012), Edward Said's Orientalism (1997), and decoloniality as advocated by Maldonado-Torres (2014) and Mignolo (2011). A postmodern reading of City of Life is made within Baudrillard's theory of hyperreality (2010), Lyotard’s concept of the grand narrative (1986) and Žižek’s concept of the dematerialisation of real life. A close reading of the films, using the research methods of semiotics and narratology, enables a deconstruction of some obscure elements, such as the embedded meaning in dialogue or the messages implicit in the mise en scène. A critical discourse analysis of strategies used to construct South African initiation schools in online news reports and discussion forumsFynn, Angelo 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the discourse strategies used to construct initiation schools in online media and message boards. The focus is on understanding the tensions that come with enacting traditional practices in the face of modernity and its associated cultural expectations. The thesis describes the manner in which these tensions are constructed in text by the media in news reports and participants in discussion forums. While there is still debate around whether the internet will revolutionise public participation and create a digital utopia; the internet is acknowledged as one of the widest reaching sources of information and entertainment. Specifically, the internet provides a platform to challenge the traditionally top-down communication between the elite, who have privileged access to the media, and the general public, who were previously constructed as passive recipients of information. Using the male circumcision initiation rite, this thesis examines how the South African public discursively constructs the epistemic location of African traditions in South Africa. The study drew on a sample of news articles from the News24 site, the largest news site in South Africa, ranging from January 2008 to December 2013. A corpus of 62 articles were analysed using the Critical Discourse Analysis technique described by Teun van Dijk. The findings of the thesis were that the initiation rite is used as a rhetorical tool to argue for the abandonment of African cultural practices in favour of modern, Western influenced beliefs and values. The findings also indicate that the initiation rite is reduced to the act of circumcision in the media by focusing on the injury and deaths of the initiates and excluding the meaning of the rite as a meaningful cultural practice. The conclusion of the thesis challenges the epistemicide committed against the male circumcision initiation rite from within the Decolonial school of thought, which critically examines everyday interaction for universalising, normative language that aims to commit cultural epistemicide to reinforce the white, male, European, Christian traditions of masculinity. / Psychology / D. (Re)centring Africa in the training of counselling and clinical psychologistsDlamini, Sipho Solomon 01 1900 (has links)
The mimicry of Europe and United States of America (US) in South African psychology in the early 1900s and the continual presence of Euroamericanised psychology continues to marginalise Black, poor, and working-class people. In this dissertation, I investigated the misalignment of counselling and clinical psychologists’ professional training, specifically the first-year Masters psychology training programme with the South African socio-political context. To counter the usual reliance on hegemonic Euroamerican-centric approaches I elaborated on an Africa(n)-centred perspective so as to make sense of the training of counselling and clinical psychologists in the South African context. I argued that the Africa(n)-centred perspective was pluriversal (accepting of multiple epistemologies), endogenous (developing from within), and focuses on Africans not as the excluded Other but rather as the Subject at the centre of their lifeworlds. I elucidated curriculum practices within the professional training programmes as part of the investigation into the intransigence of Euroamerican-centric epistemologies in the professional training curriculum. I conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 23 people, 8 of whom were course coordinators and 15 intern psychologists. The participants were from 5 universities falling into the 4 generic categories: Historically Black University (HBU), Historically White Afrikaans-speaking University (HWASU), merged university (MU), and Historically White English-speaking University (HWESU). For my analysis, I employed what I termed an Africa(n)-centred critical discourse analysis, which builds on the discursive turn in psychology, taking seriously the talk of people in the reproduction of socially unjust practices. All the interviews with the course coordinators and intern psychologists were dominated by talk of race and the Professional Board for Psychology. The interviews yielded a number of discourses, namely: 1) meritocracy, 2) diversity (which referenced issues of race, gender, and curriculum), 3) access, exclusion and privilege as related to language, 4) class, and 5) relevance (including social, market, and cultural relevance, with cultural relevance spoken about in relation to the curriculum). I conclude the dissertation by gesturing towards a constructive engagement (by which I mean a building) of an Africa(n)-centred professional training of counselling and clinical psychologists. / Psychology / Ph. My study is a theoretical intervention of the South African contemporary visual art of Mary Sibande. It focuses on the figure of Sophie representing the maid in three series; namely, Sophie-Elsie, Sophie-Merica, and Sophie-Velucia. The study applies Frantz Fanon’s thought to the understanding of the figure of Sophie while emphasising the themes of naming, the human subject, and presence-absence. The theoretical framework of this thesis is a decolonial epistemic theory, which is used as a lens to understand Fanon’s political
thoughts. I argue that the themes of naming, human subject, and presenceabsence are inherent in Fanon’s thought. These thematic areas give a better understanding of the existential questions of the figure of Sophie in the antiblack Manichean world. It is important to unpack the figure of Sophie as a Manichean figure who represents the crossing of two different worlds – the white world and the black world, Africa and Europe. The study highlights the importance and relevance of reviving Fanon’s thought concerning decolonial contemporary African art and establishing other tools of interpretation necessary to understand decolonial aestheSis.
