Grande é o poder do tempo: colação entre testemunhos de O Seminarista de Bernardo Guimarães / Great is the power of time: collation of witnesses of O Seminarista, by Bernardo Guimarães

Luana Batista de Souza 20 April 2012 (has links)
This dissertation aims at investigating the transmission process of the novel O Seminarista, by Bernardo Guimarães, in order to identify, describe and analyze changes made to the text through the years. The corpus of this research is comprised by the thirteen first editions of the novel, published from 1872 to 1949. The guidelines of Textual Scholarship were used during the recension of witnesses, collation and examination of the variants found. Witnesses were also described according to the principles of Textual Bibliography. Based on the collation of witnesses, two versions of the text were found: a complete version (edition A princeps) and an abridged version (edition B Civilização Brasileira, 1931, and edition C Livraria Martins, n.d.). The full text was reproduced from the editio princeps to the middle of the 20th Century, while the abridged text was first published on 1931 by Civilização Brasileira, and was republished years later, with a few changes, by Livraria Martins. A few typology and frequency-related patterns were observed when variant readings were reviewed. Variation types found were addition, order changes, character and word omission and replacement, as well as paragraph changes and rephrasing. The most frequent type of change was omission, followed by replacement. The reduced number of additions seems to indicate that the publishers intention was to reduce the text, which resulted in the abridged versions.

[en] DELIGHTFULLY TACTILE: PRODUCTION OF PRESENCE AND AFFECTION IN BOOK DESIGN / [pt] DELIGHTFULLY TACTILE: PRODUÇÃO DE PRESENÇA E AFETO NO DESIGN DE LIVROS

LARISSA ANDRIOLI GUEDES 29 March 2017 (has links)
[en] Delightfully tactile: production of presence and affection in book design aims to discuss the materiality of the book through graphic design by using two different ways of seeing an object: the emotional design by Donald Norman (along with the affect theory by Antonio Damasio) and the production of presence by Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht. As a meaning of understanding the connection between them and how they can apply to the study of books, I describe four books that are part of the corpus of this research: Bartleby, o escrivão, by Herman Melville, and Avenida Niévski, by Nikolai Gógol, both published by Cosac Naify; Composition No. 1, by Marc Saporta and Tree of codes, by Jonathan Safran Foer, published by Visual Editions. These two publishers are part of a segment of the publishing design that as I argument works to reclaim the presence as a reference to the human being through the creation of graphic projects which try to affect the reader by using the tactile materiality. From the contrast between two traditionally designed books and the previously mentioned works, this dissertation tries to extract a comprehension of how the physical configurations of a book can change our perception of art.

Röwenstrunk, Daniel 03 December 2019 (has links)
Long-term availability of research findings is a challenge for research, software development, and memory institutions altogether. This often includes the necessity to keep research software running over a long time. There are various methods and actions like standardization, emulation, or the development of research software by an open source community which can be taken to achieve this goal.

McMillan, Samuel 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The economic viability and continuity of any publication is determined by two critical factors, being: • The circulation of the publication, thus the readership, as well as • the advertising volumes of the publication. This particular study started by the realisation by management of the publication, Paarl Post, that these two critical factors had in real terms actually been declining since 1996, albeit marginally. The theme of continuous improvement was identified as critical in the process of eliminating "highs and lows", thus certain key areas had to be addressed. Furthermore these areas had to be continously evaluated and monitored. The process of change started with a process of gathering of information by means of questionnaires and personal interviews with certain key personnel by external consultants. A two-day session was scheduled where this information was processed with the help of the consultants and key personnel and the conclusion was made that the growth in circulation and advertising volumes and ultimately the growth in the publication was a function of certain key areas to be managed in the following way: • Cost efficient • Initiatives that lead to product growth • Optimizing of service • Continuous improvement of processes • Optimal use of manpower. The key areas of Marketing, Product, Communication, Processes and Information Technology were identified as key projects, which led to certain recommendations by these project teams based on abovementioned criteria. The "final" phase in the formal process, essentially a phase which never ends, is the implementation of the recommendations, and the continuous monitoring and following-up of the initiatives which ultimately develop to a continuous process of improvement, with the result: • Continuous circulation growth and • continous growth in advertising volumes, and ultimately continuous real growth in the community publication, Paarl Post.

Hernández Mayor, Mª Dolores 20 January 2006 (has links)
The Thesis entitled "Contributions from Faustino Arévalo to the edition of Sedulius" studies the poet Sedulius' text edited by Arévalo, specifically, the commentary -Scholia- to the first book of Carmen Paschale. After presenting the humanist's biography, describing the edition and studying Arévalo's literary tradition, the biography and Sedulian literary production are studied taking Arévalo's Prolegomena as a starting point. It follows a description of the manuscripts, editions and Sedulian commentaries. The emendatio is studied by means of a series of tables from uariae lectiones, apart from dealing with questions such as glosses or chapter titles. The presence of a large number of parallelisms is an example of the value of that criterion in the text determination. The explanatio focuses on matters of poetic metre. Finally, there is an assesment of the contributions to this edition and its survival, including Appendixes and a summary in Italian.

Victorian commodities : reading serial novels alongside their advertising supplements

Devilliers, Ingrid 06 December 2010 (has links)
Victorian serial novels were bound with pages upon pages of advertisements marketing goods to readers, yet the relative inattention paid to this significant material component of the novel is surprising. This project explores the interaction between fictional narrative and commercial advertisements, and aims to recover the material context in which three Victorian novels—Bleak House, Middlemarch, and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn—were first published and read. These three case studies—a novel published in 20 monthly serial numbers, another packaged in the rare format of eight “books” in bimonthly installments, and the third published in a monthly magazine in three excerpts—are exemplary of a larger phenomenon in Victorian book production wherein fiction and commerce were inextricably bound. This project investigates the ways in which the advertisements can be reconceived as a significant element of the novel, mediating the reader’s experience of the text. The Bleak House chapter examines how the advertisements for hair products in the “Bleak House Advertiser” serve to highlight an aspect of Charles Dickens’s text about Victorian responses to the mass of new consumer goods and individuals’ desire to control the physical aspects of their world. The following chapter considers George Eliot’s (Mary Ann Evans’s) Middlemarch, finding that just as the narrator’s asides compel readers to attend to the temporal difference between the 1830s setting of the novel and the 1870s perspective of the serial edition, sewing machine advertisements in the advertising supplement of the novel serve to remind readers of their role as observers of past events. The examination of Mark Twain’s (Samuel Clemens’s) Huck Finn, as published in three excerpts in The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, demonstrates that the magazine articles, the excerpts from Huck Finn, and the advertisements all engage in a project of unifying the nation and alleviating the physical and metaphorical wounds of war. The unity of the message emerges when the excerpts are read together with the many advertisements for wheelchairs and other such implements for disabled bodies. The dissertation ends with a chapter indicating the merits of further analysis and critical discussion of advertisements in the undergraduate literature classroom. / text
