Defense and Prosecuting Attorney Perceptions of Facility Dogs in the Courtroom

Donaldson, Kristy Melissa 01 January 2017 (has links)
Attorneys must obtain evidence for purporting their position on a court case. Many factors are considered when working with witness testimony such as age, development, narrative recall, and retraumatization. Research has detailed the hardship of obtaining evidence during witness testimony and the importance of support systems to help with the process. Existing research illustrates the stressors caused by the court processes, witness fear, and difficulty for attorneys to ascertain testimony. Therapeutic animals have been well researched and shown to have an important support role in many professions and situations. Additionally, much has been written regarding the use of varying types of court approved support systems. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding how attorneys perceive the use of facility dogs as support systems in the courtroom. The case study sought to understand how defense and prosecuting attorneys perceive the use of facility dogs in the courtroom, and how that experience has influenced their belief system. Data collection was completed through a 7 question phone interview process. The data collected via phone interviews were coded and analyzed through the use of NVivo software and Survey Monkey database. The analysis revealed the participants high level of acceptance on the use of facility dogs in the courtroom as support systems. Attorneys were open and receptive to learning more about dogs as a support system, even when hesitant about the outcome. The revelations from this study may be used to provide additional support to witnesses. Data collected within this study will propel future studies and education in many different animal advocate groups and legal entities.

Professional Development of Head Start Teachers in Emotional and Instructional Support

Harris, Marilyn McLeod 01 January 2016 (has links)
In the southwest region of Tennessee, a local Head Start program classroom assessment scoring system's (CLASS) scores fell in the lowest 10% among national Head Start programs in emotional and instructional support. Since 2012, the Office of Head Start has released reports showing that the average Head Start program has low performance CLASS emotional and instructional support scores. The purpose of this exploratory case study was to investigate the professional development of local Head Start teachers with low CLASS scores in emotional and instructional support. Knowles's adult learning theory of andragogy was the overall conceptual framework and the concentrated theory of this study was Mezirow's transformative learning theory. The key research question focused on how the professional development of Head Start teachers contributed to successful CLASS scores in emotional and instructional support as perceived by Head Start education specialists and teachers. Data collection methods included observations, previous CLASS scores, 2 focus group interviews of 5 teachers, and 1 focus group interview of 4 education specialists. NVivo 10 was used in detecting trends, ideas, and displaying connections from which the themes of coaching, mentoring, individual learning plans, and observations emerged. Findings showed that although viable professional development strategies were used, learning transfer activities were unsubstantiated. A professional development program was created to increase learning transfer into the classroom. An implication for positive social change could result in achieving maximum emotional and instructional CLASS scores in the Head Start community, providing the highest quality of services recognized by the Head Start Office.

I probably wouldn´t have made it on my own" : A few participants experience of the support from the coach in the method Supported employment

Ivemark, Åsa, Jansson, Josabet January 2011 (has links)
Lack of participation in the open labor market is highly prevalent for people with mental illness. Vocational rehabilitation through Supported employment (SE) has shown to be an effective approach to improve employment outcomes. Research generally centres upon the effectiveness of the method. This study focuses on the support from the SE-coach and the aim is to investigate the meaning of this support to the participants. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three participants and a group interview with three coaches. The emotional, tailored and instrumental supports were pointed out as being helpful. They interact and lead to empowerment for two of the participants who are now in work practice. They show satisfaction with their occupational situation and with being part of a social context. The participants express improvement in psychiatric symptoms, global functioning and self-esteem. The findings of this study highlight the importance of the emotional support from the SE-coach, and stress the ability of the coach to balance the amount of support given. This is crucial in order to facilitate the empowerment of the participants.

Eriksson, Therése, Eriksson, Magdalena January 2008 (has links)
Early pregnancy loss occurs to 10-35% of all pregnant women and it is the most common type of pregnancy loss. The aim was to describe women’s experiences of nursing care in relation to early pregnancy loss. The used method was systematic literature review and resulted in totally used nine articles. The data collection was accomplished in the databases Cinahl, PubMed and PsycINFO. The articles quality was checked and the result was analyzed with regard to the aim. The material was coded in to colours from the found patterns and three categories took place. The categories were finally women’s experiences of emotional support, women’s experiences of information and explanation and women’s experiences and needs of aftercare. The greater part of the result included experiences of dissatisfaction with the nursing care among the women. Many women experienced an unsympathetic attitude, lack of medical explanation to the course and lack of aftercare. The conclusion was that the majority of the women didn’t experience satisfaction with the emotional support, the medical explanation and the aftercare, in relation to early pregnancy loss. Suggestion for new research is made, with focus on women’s unique feelings and needs, and also with focus on the nurses’ attitude and aftercare of these women.

No. of bitstreams: 1 TeseJP.pdf: 1965801 bytes, checksum: 0059422d61071ba6760f3214addc6adc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-03-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) / The purpose of this research is to analyze the uses of digital media such as emotional support, conceptualized as a social relation in which people are looking for help to deal with emotional demands. These are referred initially to love relationships which lead to subjective processes that deal with gender, social class, sexuality, race, age, occupation, among other possible axes of analysis. The goal is to discuss what digital media settings have assumed about the search for emotional support, articulated the morals of their uses and subjective processes. Thus, the empirical field was constructed from three research fronts: the first analyzes speeches of sites that present emotional counseling through the mode I call as digital sentimental office; the second analyzes the professional use of new technologies by psychologists that provide therapeutic care over the Internet, setting the counseling and the third in which I analyze the online community uses, called networks. I intend to explore meanings and morals around digital media uses from discourses and practices of both people who use these media with these objectives, as the professionals who have joined the appeal of digital media to promote counseling. Throughout the work are presented discussions of these three fronts that constitute this research, in order to point some aspects that allow confronting the different search modes for emotional support by digital media in their speeches, uses and interests remain in the dispute for expertise in this area. The hypothesis is that has set up an emotional support market through digital media. However, differently to other media, the segmentation occurs concomitantly to the uses of people, allowing agencies and flows between platforms which can culminate into other forms of support. The proposal is addressing the elements of emotional support in each front in order to verify continuities and ruptures between what is conceptualized as support, especially pointing to morals and specific forms of subjectivity.

Participating in a selection process can be exhausting, as the uncertainty of knowing the results can generate anxiety. In addition, if we focus on young people who are looking for their first job opportunity, the uncertainty increases, since in most cases, they lack the preparation to successfully face the selection processes, so they are not hired. That is why the idea of Palante Postulante was born, whose main objective is to provide a solution to this problem. The Palante Postulante project consists of demonstrating the feasibility of creating a web platform for people between 18 and 25 years of age in Metropolitan Lima, who have been rejected during the job search process and are looking for emotional support and personalized advice to become more employable. Through this research it was possible to identify that applicants do not feel prepared to face a new selection process and wish to better control their emotions and anxiety during this stage. To carry out this project, an analysis of the customer segment, key partners, competitors, cost structure, among others, was carried out. Likewise, a Financial Plan was developed, which allowed us to identify the feasibility of the project. These contain relevant information for the implementation of the project. Finally, after the projection, it is estimated that the investment will be recovered in month 20 and that the project will generate value. / Trabajo de investigación

A Universidade Aberta a Terceira Idade e as redes de apoio afetivo e social do idoso /

Finato, Mariza da Silva Santos. January 2003 (has links)
Abstract: The longevity of human specie has been worldwide researched with different objectives. With the knowledge about the biological, psychological and sociological implications of aging, society could look up for the people health, leisure, culture and education conditions, and while improving the intergeneration contact, decrease prejudice against the elder, allowing the knowledge about the cultural tradition to be learned and multiplied by the youth. This study proposed to investigate if the Universities for the Elderly (UNATI) could work as an emotional and social support network for its students. It was evaluated, by two instruments that measure attitudes, the networks that could work as emotional and social supports. Students chose kids, husband and grandchildren as the emotional support network, and for extension, brothers-in-law and brothers. In difficult situations, prayer and faith were important supports. Deceased dear relatives were supporting memories, too. As the social network, doctors, neighbors, employees, friends from UNATI and its professors, monitors and co-ordination, were referred to be important supports in their lives.
