Does Gender Influence the Way People Provide and Receive Politeness? : A Research Study on the Differences or Similarities Between Gender and Linguistic Politeness

Thellman, Saga January 2018 (has links)
This essay examines the relation between gender and adherence to Brown and Levinson's Politeness Principle. Women and men tend to use language for different purposes and for the purpose of achieving various goals. In order to examine this relation, a research study was conducted. Two women and three men were observed discussing subjects given by an interviewer. The collected interview data gathered from the conversation was analyzed and related to the Politeness Principle. Aspects from sociolinguistics, such as theories from gender and language studies, and the Cooperative Principle as proposed by H P Grice, were also considered and formed part of the analysis. The results indicate that there is a small difference between women’s versus men’s adherence to the Politeness Principle. More specifically, women tend to use more aspects of linguistic politeness. However, as the sample group of the research study consisted of only five participants, the limits of the study in terms of the generalizability of the results are recognized and suggestions have been made for further research.

AVALIAÇÃO ANTROPOSCÓPICA E CEFALOMÉTRICA DO PERFIL E DA TENDÊNCIA FACIAL E SUA RELAÇÃO COM AS FUNÇÕES ESTOMATOGNÁTICAS / ANTHROPOSCOPIC AND CEPHALOMETRIC EVALUATION OF PROFILE AND OF FACIAL TENDENCY AND THE RELATIONSHIP WITH STOMATOGNATHIC FUNCTIONS

Pacheco, Andrielle de Bitencourt 22 March 2013 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Introduction: the profile and the facial tendency constitute the variation of bone and muscle structures of the individual, and may influence directly in the chewing, swallowing and breathing functions. Thus, the evaluation of these aspects is essential for Orofacial clinical work. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the cephalometric and anthrophoscopic evaluation on the classification of profile and facial tendency, as well as to evaluate the association of these skeletal features with the functions of the stomatognathic system. Method: the sample consisted of 35 childrens, aged between six and twelve years, undergoing anthroposcopic evaluation with photographic documentation, with cephalometric and otorhinolaryngology evaluation. To verify the agreement between cephalometric and anthroposcopic evaluation was used the Kappa test. The association between profile and the facial tendency with the stomatognathic changes was analyzed using the Qui-square and Fisher Exact Test. Was adopted a significance level of p <0.05 for all tests. Results: the concordance among the judges in the classification of profile and the facial tendency was moderate. The concordance between the cephalometric and anthroposcopic evaluation as to profile was not possible as to analyze and the tendency was weak. Was observed good concordance between judges for the chewing variables and weak concordance for the swallowing variables. Was not found significant association between stomatognathic function and no association was found between stomatognathic functions with the facial profile and tendency. Conclusion: concludes that assessments and cephalometric antroposcópica differ and that changes stomatognathic not depend only on a few isolated variables.

Dimensions of bullying: examining face-to-face and cyber-bullying among adolescents with and without emotional and behavioural disorders

Evancio Barker, Laurissa 04 October 2017 (has links)
Bullying, in its many different face-to-face and cyber manifestations, profoundly impacts involved youth, particularly those with special education needs. Schools have typically focused on policing the bullies, while teaching victims of bullying effective reactive responses. The objective of this study was to identify those students at greatest risk, the factors placing them at risk, and to understand the source of their consequently aggressive social behaviours and communication. Understanding root causes thereby enables schools to shift toward proactively preventing bullying behaviours. Evidence suggests that adolescents with Emotional and Behavioural Disorders (EBD) are overrepresented in the face-to-face bullying dynamic. Through a social-ecological lens, the current study compares bullying involvement among typically developing adolescents (n = 134) with EBD adolescents (n = 30), and considers how within-person characteristics of adolescents with EBD are influenced by and interact with bi-directional microsystem (i.e. family, friends, teachers, school) and macrosystem (i.e. social and educational patterns of programming) factors to increase or decrease face-to-face- and cyber-bullying involvement. As hypothesized, adolescents with EBD were significantly more involved in both face-to-face- and cyber-bullying and –victimization. Predictive factors were uniquely identified for on- and off-line bullying and victimization. The current findings demonstrate a need to approach bullying prevention proactively by aiming resources at the source of social aggression. / Graduate

Judgments of Social Dimensions of Faces in Individuals with High-Functioning Autism

Lindahl, Christina January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to investigate if individuals with high-functioning autism differ from typically developing (TD) individuals in judgments of social dimensions from faces. Thirty-two individuals with high functioning autism and sixty-seven TD individuals rated 196 synthetic faces representing 7 social dimensions. Overall, both groups performed similarly on the judgment tasks. However, some group differences emerged for ratings of Competence and Likeability in the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) group. Furthermore, alexithymia, or emotion-blindness, was found to be a possible indicator of ability to judge social dimensions in the ASD group. Implications of present results in relation to prior and future research on social interaction on the autism spectrum are discussed.

The object of this study is the phenomenon known as ‘Internet memes’, produced within a virtual environment, in a website called <9gag>. The comments section was the main focus of analysis. From an interactional perspective on discourse, it has been investigated the way Internet meme replication signals ritual practices constitutive of this group and how it affects the way participants’ faces are co-constructed and negotiated in the course of interaction. Thus, rituals and faces claimed are seen as emergent practices that are sensitive to the interactional here-and-now of language use in this context. Meme-replication practices (understood as units of cultural transmission and dissemination of information, based on imitation), when analysed from the perspective of relational rituals (Kádár, 2013), have interactional effects that go beyond simply entertaining a group such as <9gag>. They help build and maintain the ethos of this virtual community, by giving membership status to those participants who abide by the interactional rules established through these practices. Participation and alignment with the group’s ritual practices have generated the feeling of belonging through identification among participants, legitimating them as members of this community, connected by the sharing of values disseminated by memes, the knowledge of the group’s practices and the symbolic representations constructed by the group. Moreover, it has been verified that through facework processes interactants model interactions within this community by (dis-)affiliating themselves with the types of face that emerge in this website.

Research Line: Training and Pedagogical Practice of the Teaching Profession. The research investigated the management of a face-to-face support center of a private distance learning institution in the interior of the state of São Paulo. A qualitative approach was adopted, developing as a case study. Participants included: a polo manager, a polo coordinator, three tutors and fifteen students from the final stages of the courses, five of each of the courses: Pedagogy, Administration and Logistics. The data collection was performed through semi-structured interviews. The data were organized and interpreted using the technique of content analysis. The results indicated that the adopted management is characterized as centralizing, in which decisions are taken without the dialogue with the poles, this implies in damages to the use of available technological resources and pedagogical support and makes difficult the work of the tutor face-to-face. It is hoped that the results of this research may contribute to further research on Distance Education management, mainly in the context of the face-to-face support poles.

To prepare our students for the digital society : A study about blended teaching, flipped classroom and synchronous learning in English teaching for year 4-6

Gaspar, Alexandra January 2020 (has links)

Edema na face e pescoço após esvaziamento cervical com ou sem ressecção da veia jugular interna / Facial and neck edema after neck dissection with or without internal jugular vein resection

Mozzini, Carolina Barreto 14 October 2011 (has links)
During neck dissection, besides the lymphatic tissue, some non-lymphatic structures of the neck are at injury risk or are resected, such as the internal jugular vein. This is directly related to venous and lymphatic drainage of face and neck, and, thus, resection may cause venous congestion, facial and laryngeal edema, visual disturbances and cerebral edema. There are several techniques to evaluate the edema; however, there are no reports of a particular technique that can be used in the facial region. This study aimed to quantify edema in specific points sited at the face and neck of patients who underwent neck dissection with or without resection of the internal jugular vein. METHODS: These study uses an objective method of facial and neck edema measurement of patients at pre and postoperative of unilateral or bilateral neck dissection with or without internal jugular vein resection, for malignancies at the head and neck level and with no previous neck treatment, through a device that assess the skin dielectric constant and subcutaneous fat in four stages: preoperative, 3rd, 10th and 30th postoperative days, in patients treated at the A. C. Camargo Hospital Head and Neck Department, Sao Paulo, Brazil. RESULTS: There were 51 patients prospectively evaluated; mostly males (68.6%) with mean age of 55.7 years (median of 54 years). It was verified that differences on tissue dielectric constant were not statistically different between patients with and without internal jugular vein resection; however, in patients undergone unilateral neck dissection there was significant edema between pre and postoperative both in those with preserved vein as in those with resection, as well as in bilateral with vein preservation, affecting the general quality of life and the one related to appearance in both groups. It was also found that edema seems to be unavoidable after the procedure, as it was evidenced significantly in patients undergoing radical neck dissection, modified radical and selective. CONCLUSION: No significant difference was observed in face and neck edema after neck dissection in patients with or without internal jugular vein resection, however, there is difference between pre and postoperative in each group regardless of the preservation or not of the vein, where the most affected points are mandible and neck

[en] CORPORATE TWITTER ACCOUNTS AND NEW FORMS OF SOCIATION / [pt] TWITTER CORPORATIVO E NOVAS FORMAS DE SOCIAÇÃO

13 December 2021 (has links)
[en] This study aims to investigate how companies and customers use Twitter to build interactions of sociability. Using a communication-interactional approach and social pragmatics studies, the study analyzes messages posted on the Twitter profiles maintained by two different companies. The focus deals with the topics of the messages and the politeness strategies used to sustain or jeopardize the social space. The results indicate that companies use microblogging to strengthen their brands. The topics and politeness strategies are chosen by the companies with the goal of strengthening their relationships with customers. In addition, we observe that customers use strategies of association that meet the conditions of a pleasant social space. Conversely, customers occasionally use decoupling strategies that exploit the public nature of Twitter to perform actions considered to be less polite or more appropriate to other customer service systems.

Remote Teaching in the Communicative Classroom : How Remote Teaching has Affected Swedish EFL Learners’ Willingness to Speak English during Communicative Classroom Activities

Björkman, Johanna, Reinholdsson, Elina January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate how the transition into remote education in Swedish upper-secondary schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the implementation of communicative tasks during lessons in English as a foreign language, and its consequences on students’ willingness to speak. For this purpose, the following three research questions were posed: 1. In which ways have communicative classroom activities in Swedish upper-secondary schools been affected by remote education according to English as a foreign language learners? 2. According to English as a foreign language learners, in which ways have their willingness to speak English been affected by remote education in Swedish upper-secondary schools? 3. What are some aspects that have influenced English as a foreign language learners’ willingness to speak English during remote education in Swedish upper-secondary schools? A total of 128 students from different upper-secondary schools and regions in Sweden were surveyed, after which three of them were interviewed. The data were then analyzed using a univariate and content analysis method. The results of the study suggest that remote education has entailed an immense impact on the communicative classroom. All studied communicative activities decreased in amount, as did the students’ willingness to speak English. This is a consequence of aspects such as technical complications, difficulties in reading others’ body language, locational restraints, and learning objectives.
