Making art for sustainability? : A qualitative study about identifying artists' perspective on the relationship between environmental art and sustainable development

Kindvall, Linnea January 2019 (has links)
Environmental art is increasingly becoming a medium to address environmental challenges and studies have shown that the art form offers many opportunities when included within work of sustainable development. This study has investigated artists motivations to pursue environmental art and asked whether artists believe that art can contribute to sustainable development. This project was achieved using a qualitative approach and cross-sectional design, through semi-structured interviews with ten artists working with environmental art in different parts of the world. The theoretical framework consisted of theories describing artists’ motivations to pursue art and environmental art, as well as motivations of environmental activists. Results showed that artists are motivated to pursue environmental art for several reasons, some of these reasons relates to the same motivational factors among environmental activists. The artists also lined that their own connection to nature was a big motivation for pursuing environmental art. Nine out of ten artists agreed that art can contribute to sustainable development, and one artist questioned whether any development can be sustainable.  The conclusion of this study is that artists’ main motivation to pursue environmental art derives from a response to environmental concerns in society and the world of today, out of a belief that art offers other kinds of opportunities to reflect on environmental concerns than normally communicated environmental information.

Arte e paisagem: estudo de obras contemporâneas brasileiras / Art and landscape: study of Brazilian contemporary works

Isaac, Cristiana Bernardi 27 May 2013 (has links)
This research disserts about the relationship between brazilian contemporary art and landscape, regarding some works of art that interfered directly in it, as well as projects that intended to do it, but were not accomplished, eventually. These works, as they incorporate natural and cultural aspects of the landscape, they emphasize it and raise a debate on its development, transformation and appreciation. Two expositions - which were to be taken, at first, in national scale - more effectively proposed the intervention of brazilian contemporary art into the landscape and stimulated discussions on these matters. They are: Fronteiras ( 1998-2001), which approached the geographical landscape references, and Margem (2009-2010), which focused the urban ones. Within Fronteiras, from the boundary theme, the discussion arises on territory, region, geographical scale and models of territorial occupation; nevertheless, art introduces the need of landscape in this debate. In contrast, Margem brings up issues related to the the urban landscape, specifically how rivers are appropriated and apprehended by people. This is a sample of works of art that approach landscape in different ways, which lead us to consider how brazilian contemporary art handles landscape, not only as an inspiration, but as a constitutive component of the work; they also highlight how landscape might be, possibly, an influence on them.

Hélio Oiticica: só me interesso pelo que não é meu / Hélio Oiticica: only care for what is not mine

Paula Ávila Kepler 20 April 2012 (has links)
In the word of brazilian artist Helio Oiticica, there is a systematic questioning of art pratices, conditions, limitations and connections, concerning its relations to politics, both in the micropolitical level and institutional frame. This research goes from Brazilian art movement of Neoconcretism to the holistic Environmental Art, and also through a (briefly discussed) journey upon Antiart and Conceptual Art. My analysis focuses Mangueiras favela community imbrications, where Helio Oiticica did much experimentation along the sixties and seventies. I endeavor to address social processes that animate and reconstruct, from conceptual point of view, his Works in relation to subjectivity production. It assumes as its central point a certain periodization, from modern matrices of art process to post-modern, in the sense established by Brazilian art critic Mario Pedrosa. Specially, under the light of resistance, I wish to examine how Helio Oiticica, both in his writings and his actual Works, he strives to radicalize differentiation and singularisation processes within artistic, political and social interwoven matrices of poor communities in Brazil
