De erotiska njutningarnas bruk : En uppgörelse med rädslan för den orena njutningen i jakten på en vällustens teologi / The use of erotic pleasures : A deal with the fear of the impure pleasure in the pursuit of a theology of lust

Tjäderklo, Ninni January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to examine the theological aspects of human sexual desire. Through a poetic-philosophical analysis of Alina Reye's erotic novel The Butcher and 14th Century Mystic Julian of Norwich's book Revelations of the Divine Love, the essay aims to shed light on relevant theological themes and issues concerning sexuality's connection to theology and the talk of eros as the divine origin of desire. The study also aims to explore how the themes of sexual desire that emerge through this analysis can be considered to correlate with the contemporary theologians Carter Heyward and Ola Sigurdson's views on sexuality. As a theoretical framework, five hypotheses regarding sexuality are used, which are taken from Mark D. Jordan's reasoning in the book The Ethics of Sex.

Bussière, Réjean 04 1900 (has links)
That research concerns the analysis of the evolution of the written narrative of Marguerite Yourcenar about three young characters who look like each other and who loves each other in relational triangle within the background context of the Baltic Civil War just after The First World War of 1914-18 and in its adaptation in film by Volker Schlöndorff in 1976. This study concentrates about representation of character’s system, dynamic of eros, represensation of gender for instance the masculinity and the war during the adaptation for the cinema by Volker Schlöndorff. Briefly, to the impact of the new media on the original themes which were developed in the original novel of Marguerite Yourcenar in 1939, Le Coup de grâce. Our study presents itself in a chronological order for making some conclusions about representations of the themes of desire and death, gender and war in the time from the story written 1939 and the film in 1976 We can conclude after analysis of both media for the narrative that Mythical figures as Thanatos and Eros present in this novel received a different treatment in the film adaptation where the emphasis moved to the dualistic relation between Eric and the women Sophie. The movie has become a feministic which puts emphasis on a woman against her social middle and diminish the impact of the mythical military friendship related to the mythic military myth of Achille and Patrocle which was underlined but present in the novel with the death of one main characters on the battlefied of the story. In taking off most of the scenes of military friendship between the two men charaters, the mythical part of the novel, is evacuated. The film adaptation is a free adaptation according to the classification of adaptation film of Esther Pelletier with retranchments and changes from the novel.

The Necessity of Movement

Allen, Emily (Poet) 08 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is a collection of poems preceded by a critical preface. The preface considers emotional immediacy—or the idea of enacting in readers an emotional drama that appears genuine and simultaneous with the speaker's experience—and furthermore argues against the common criticism that accessibility means simplicity, ultimately reifying the importance of accessibility in contemporary poetry. The preface is divided into an introduction and three sections, each of which explores a different technique for creating immediacy, exemplified by Robert Lowell’s "Waking in the Blue,” Sylvia Plath's "Lady Lazarus,” and Louise Gluck's "Eros." The first section examines "Waking in the Blue,” and the poem's systematic inflation and deflation of persona as a means of revealing complexity a ambiguity. The second section engages in a close reading of "Lady Lazarus,” arguing that the poem's initially deliberately false erodes into sincerity, creating immediacy. The third section considers the continued importance of persona beyond confessionalism, and argues that in "Eros," it is the apparent lack of drama, and the focus on the cognitive process, that facilitates emotional immediacy.

Der platonische Nietzsche

Cardoso, Jesus Martin 04 June 2012 (has links)
By claiming that his philosophy should be understood as “inverted Platonism” Nietzsche defined his relationship to the Platonic system. This research project aims to articulate a new understanding of this relationship by analyzing philosophical similarities between the two authors'' respective philosophies. The first chapter is dedicated to the explanation of the term “inverted Platonism” and articulates the differences between Plato''s and Nietzsche''s systems. These discrepancies are manifested in four main areas: the metaphysical, the axiological, the gnosiological and the aesthetic. The second chapter deals with the roles of the Apollonian and the Dionysian in Nietzschean theory. Both concepts are compared with the Platonic Eros, as they invite man to abandon the sensual world and instead to commune with the very origin of reality. The third chapter analyzes Plato´s denunciation of art in “The Republic”. The Greek philosopher seeks true knowledge and connects his aesthetic concerns with the idea of Truth. Nietzsche refers to the cynosure between aesthetics and cognitive theory as “amor fati”. The fourth chapter is dedicated to the physiology of love. Nietzsche transforms the cognitive process into a passionate love. Cognition assumes the shape of passion, slowly crystallizing over time, with many twists and turns, into “amor fati”. “Amor fati” aestheticizes cognition and epistemologizes aesthetics. Therefore Nietzsche''s cognitive theory is actually equivalent to that of Plato.

Pastoral therapy and extra-marital affairs : a narrative approach

Botha, Andre 06 1900 (has links)
Extra-marital affairs are the main reason for divorce in western society. Pastoral therapists usually operate within a modernistic theology and use their 'expert' knowledge of theological ethics to confront the unfaithful spouse - a pastoral therapeutic approach that neither delivers the desired results, nor honours the client's expertise and freedom. This study endeavoured to socially construct pastoral therapy using the principles of postmodernistic social construction discourse with couples/spouses where one spouse is or was engaged in an extramarital affair. The relation between a modernistic epistemology and a postmodernistic epistemology, and how this relation affects theology, practical theology and pastoral therapy were explored. The propium of pastoral therapy in a postmodemistic paradigm and the implications of a narrative approach in pastoral therapy for theological ethics were reflected upon. A narrative description of extra-marital affairs was constructed and some of the cultural discourses which co-constitute extra-marital affairs were discussed. The pastoral therapist and clients were simultaneously in conversation with ethical discourses and relational, personal and emotional discourses, thus co-constructing new alternatives and possibilities. During these multiple reflexive conversations, some of the cultural discourses (eros; self-fulfilment; extra-marital sex and hedonism) which co-constitute extra-marital affairs were deconstructed. In the light of the usual limitations of the life-span of an extra-marital affair, the pastoral therapist and faithful spouses socially constructed alternatives and possibilities for their lives to enable them to outstay the extra-marital affair of the unfaithful spouse. Multiple reflexive conversations with (un)faithful spouses co-constructed, with relational and ethical discourses, a narrative approach in pastoral therapy. The use of externalisation and ritualisation in a narrative approach in pastoral therapy concerning extra-marital affairs was explored. A sense of guilt and secrets were also themes in multiple reflexive conversations with unfaithful spouses. This prompted reflection on the use of Scripture in a narrative approach in pastoral therapy. The relation between the biological-psychological aspects of extra-marital affairs and narrative therapy are also briefly explored. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D. Th. Of Eros and other demons : the literary representations of taboo and transgression in the Late Antique society of the Christian East (4th - 7th centuries)

Ainalis, Zisis 25 January 2014 (has links)
This study treats the literary representations of the “demon of fornication” and the adjacent notions of taboo and transgression in the late-antique society of Christian East through a close reading of the Lives of Saints. It focuses on the “Lives of Holy Harlots” and those of “Holy Adulteresses”, which materialize the late-antique man’s perceptions about the question of the transgression of the sexual taboos. But just along with the literary representations of social norms’ real transgression, mostly sexual, we can also find other forms of transgression, either real or imaginary. For this reason we have examined other cases of “border-line” saints, whose Lives provide us with precious indications about the whole range of social norms and the taboo limitations of the late-antique society: the denial of marriage and work, the homosexuality, the contesting of the paternal and political power, the begging, the wandering, the madness and the laughter, only being the most important. However, the simple enumeration of such subjects evokes the question of the position of the outcasts in this society. Which was the place of all those who were considered as social “rejections” in the late-antique society, which was the place of prostitutes, of adulteresses, of homosexuals, of foolish people, of the wandering or begging workless people, and which were the attitudes towards them or the social and psychological repercussions that they were obliged to confront? Upon trying to answer to these questions, we’ve stumbled upon the existence of a distinct category of Lives of Saints which treats all those taboo subjects: the “Lives of popular Saints” (or the “Popular Lives of Saints”), whose main characteristics we have tried to establish and to interpret in an historical synthesis that concludes this study.

Efeito do extrato de Azadirachta indica (nim) sobre resposta de hipersensibilidade mediada por ácido salicílico em células de Rubus fruticosus / Effect of Azadirachta indica extract (neem) on hypersensitivity response mediated by salicylic acid in cells of Rubus fruticosus.

Paviani, Veronica 01 June 2010 (has links)
Plants, like other organisms, have the capacity to defend themselves against attack by pathogens. One of the responses triggered by pathogen recognition by plant cells is the hypersensitive response (HR), which involves the immediate death of cells in the primary site of infection, providing resistance to the pathogen growth. In this regard, it has been well established that mitochondria are involved in cell death. The neem tree (Azadirachta indica) is known due to its medicinal and insecticidal properties; studies on the insecticidal action of this plant had been restricted to the analysis of their action mechanisms on insects and their effects on rural workers who use neem-based products. However, its impact on plant systems has not been addressed. Considering previous results from our laboratory and literature data we assessed the effects of neem as elicitor, particularly the mechanisms leading to the phenomenon of plant resistance. The neem extract (EB) was prepared from the seeds, characterized biochemically by quantification of phenolic compounds, sugars and proteins. The extract showed strong dose-dependent antioxidant activity (IC50 of 14.85 mg/mL). EB concentrations of 0.1-5 mg/mL, alone or in association with 1 mol/L or 1 mmol/L SA (salicylic acid), were used for the biological assays. For cell death assays, EB was employed in concentrations of 0.1 and 5.0 mg/mL, alone or in association with 1 mol/L SA, during 0-8 hours. EB (0.1 mg/mL), alone or in association with 1 mol/L SA, induced Rubus fruticosus cell death more efficiently than EB alone or in association with 5 mg/mL SA. After 8 hours, a 64% of death of cells elicited with 0.1 mg/mL EB and 71% of death of cells elicited with 0.1 mg/mL EB in association with SA, was observed. Decrease in ROS generation and production of endogenous SA, as well as increased production of phenolic compounds, was observed in intact cells elicited with EB alone. However, when cells were elicited with EB in association with SA, a decreased production of phenolic compounds and an increased production of endogenous SA, was observed. In isolated mitochondria, it was measured oxygen consumption, membrane potential and ROS production for EB alone or in association with 1 mmol/L SA. In either conditions, EB decreased oxygen consumption by the respiratory chain, an effect more pronounced in association with SA: ~79 % inhibition for state 3 and ~ 62 % for state 4 respiration. Also, either neem alone or in association with SA decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, as well as ROS generation to an extent of 55-20% in the presence of antimycin A and 39-10% in the presence of rotenone; in association with SA, EB decreased ROS at 5, 1 and 0.5 mg/mL. Together with our previous study, these results suggest that neem seeds extract has a protective effect on Rubus fruticosus cells by scavenging, via phenolic compounds, reactive oxygen species generated by SA, thereby decreasing its action as cell death inducer.

Estudo do efeito de respostas de hipersensibilidade sobre a parede celular em cultura de células de amora-preta (Rubus fruticosus) / study of the effects of hypersensitive response on cell wall in blackberry-black cell culture (Rubus fruticosus)

Souza, Fernando Aparecido Mariano de 23 February 2007 (has links)
Like the other organisms, plants have the ability to self-defend through recognition of pathogens (hypersensitive response - HR), causing immediate cell death at the primary infection site, thus offering resistance to their grown. The HR is characterized by necrosis of tissues in this site via many signals still not completely elucidated, like formation of free radicals including H2O2 and reinforcement of cell wall. The aim of this study was to establish the relationship between these signals in blackberry-black cell culture (Rubus fruticosus). The experimental conditions for analysis of cell wall, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and H2O2, were established. Acid polysaccharide (rhamnoglucuronogalactan, F-I), salicylic acid (SA), and methyl jasmonate (MeJA), well established effectors of the defense response, were used as elicitors. ROS and H2O2 production was activated by F-I and SA, followed by release of fragments like disaccharides from the cell wall, apparently due to its degradation. By contrast, a small production of ROS and H2O2 was observed in presence of MeJA, as well as an increase of high molecular weight fragments, that may function as signals for reinforcement of cell wall, enzyme induction and production of others defense molecules. Together, the two elicitors SA and MeJA inhibited the ROS production, caused by MeJA, while sustaining release of the extra cellular compounds of high molecular weight.

Atividade dos sistemas antioxidantes da microalga Minutocellus polymorphus frente exposição a cádmio / Activity of antioxidant systems of microalgae Minutocellus Polymorphus when exposed to cadmium

Decleva, Diego Vinicius Lopes 19 September 2012 (has links)
The intracellular production and activation of molecular oxygen to reactive species is a constantly threat to photosynthetic organisms once chloroplasts and mitochondria are cellular compartments highly liable to oxidative stress. In normal conditions the generation of ROS on this organelles is slow and controlled although can be exacerbated by the exposure to pollutants agents as metals and organic pollutants. Contamination by metals is an important source of oxidative stress in biological systems, the resistance of the photosynthetic organisms to this stress due to biochemical adaptations that prevent oxidative imbalance. In this work, we investigated the effects of Cd2+ ions on microalgae Minutocellus polymorphus. The microalge showed sensible to Cd2+ effects due to significant increase on cellular death when exposed. Through several exposures, the value of IC50 was determined as 0.14 mmol.L-1. The responses of major antioxidant systems both enzymatic and non-enzymatic were also evaluated. After 48 hours of exposition to Cd2+, the cells showed increases of antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT and GST in 3.5, 6.2 and 2 times respectively. This exposure also significantly decreased enzyme GR activity by 28 %. In this way, GSH levels were also changed, with a reduction of 60% when under exposure to metal. However, there was no change in the activity of GPx enzyme. From the information obtained in this work, we conclude that Cd2+ is toxic to M. polymorphus, being strong inducer of oxidative stress to their cellular structures, causing the consequent change in antioxidant profile that can be used as biomarkers that can be used as biomarkers of Cd2+ exposure on controlled conditions. This study therefore contributes to a further elucidation of the biochemical and molecular components of adaptive processes in marine microalgae.
