For this, we take as theoretical basis Activity Theory elements, considering the specifics of distance education. We have adopted in our benchmark Aretio (2004; 2006);Van de Walle (2009), Veloso (2000), Vigotsky (2007), Galperin (2009) and Talizina (2000), among others, along with official documents such as Referenciais da Paraíba (PARAIBA, 2010) and the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (BRASIL, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2006). Participated in the study 67 students of the 97 registered in 5th period of the Mathematics Degree in distance learning of the Universidade Federal da Paraíba, from 18 counties in the state. We adopted as the methodology of the study the descriptive and exploratory research, according to the study objectives. Regarding the acquisition and analysis of data, this study was characterized by being a case study which the main instruments were a semi-structured questionnaire, tasks designed by the researchers, educational workshops and a field diary. Throughout the process the students performed 23 tasks, containing a total of 73 questions, for seven months of planning, preparation, execution and evaluation of five steps that characterized the study: creation, material or materialized, external language, internal and mental language. Upon completion of the data analysis, we confirm our thesis that through oriented assimilation, based on an approximation of the Activity Theory, combined with a planned system we can enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics content for the students who participated in all stages of the study, being checked at the end of the study and after a certain time a greater retention of assimilation of action and the triangle concept, featuring a breakthrough in learning quality of the participants.

Psicologia da educação matemática; ensino de geometria; habilidade matemática; raciocínio espacial; habilidade visual / Abstract: In considering the influence of cognitive and affective factors in academic achievement of geometry, the objectives of this work were to analyze the spatial component of mathematical ability and to verify the existence of relations among this component, the spatial sense, the attitudes toward Mathematics and Geometry and the academic performance. The subjects of this research were 177 students, from three grades of a particular school from Mogi das Cruzes ¿ SP. Two questionnaires with pencil and paper, one spatial sense test and two attitudes scales toward mathematics and geometry were applied. The factorial analysis of spatial component operations of mathematics ability (counting of cubes, formation and identification of polygon in space, section, planning, projection and rotation) indicated the existence of one factor. It proved that the test evaluated the general ability to deal with geometric concepts that are taught in the secondary school, taking into account the proposed tasks. The attitudes toward Mathematics were related to the attitudes toward geometry. The geometry performance was related to the spatial sense, to the spatial component of mathematical ability and to the attitudes toward mathematics and geometry. This work made reference to the formation, inspection and transformation of visual mental images, whose processes were evidenced in the phases of acquisition and processing of problems geometrical information. The external graphical representations that were evidenced in the solution of geometry problems with the spatial structure were classified according to the function, coherence and detailing, and the dates indicated that the most talented students made partial and coherent representations and did not utilize them as perceptual assistance.Psychology of Mathematics Education; geometry teaching; mathematical abilities; spatial sense / Doutorado / Educação Matematica / Doutor em Educação

Formação de professores leigos em serviço : um estudo sobre saberes e praticas docentes em geometria / Education of lay teachers during teaching practice: a study of teaching knowledge and practice in geometry

Reis, Maria Elidia Teixeira 15 February 2007 (has links)
Orientador : Dario Fiorentini / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-08T14:14:19Z (GMT). This research was aimed at analyzing the educational process of a group of lay teachers during a period of teaching activity, seeking to answer the following investigative question: How do teachers â?¿ especially lay teachers during teaching activity â?¿ perceive, narrate, and elicit the contributions and limitations to academic education acquired during a remedial emergency course of full partitioned licensorship (â?¿Licenciatura Plena Parceladaâ??, or LPP) on mathematics, especially in relation to their practice and their teaching knowledge in geometry? In order to answer this question, a qualitative case study of a mathematics LPP group was carried out in the city of Jataí, Goiás, involving a deeper investigation of two of its participants, who had been through over ten years of teaching experience. The material for analysis and interpretation was composed of questionnaires answered by the group, documents related to the LPP project, semi-structured interviews with three teachers-educators of the course and two teachers-students who had their classes observed. The process of analysis and interpretation of this material was developed on three bases: (1) The exploration and valorization of experience knowledge and its relation to the knowledge from academic education in the mathematics LPP course; (2) the problems, limits and difficulty faced by teachers/students and teachers/educators during the course; and (3) what teachers-students and educators think and tell about the contributions of this course. The results showed that, on the one hand, this LPP mathematics course has made it possible for the lay teachers to have the professional qualification that they desired and that is legally required, but, on the other hand, it has presented little evidence of professional development for its participants. This conclusion is drawn from the fact that, although the LPP project in the state of Goiás had been planned to connect theory and practice, the experience knowledge and the teachers-studentsâ?¿ pedogogical practice were not actually valued or explored; neither were they taken as the real object of reflection and questioning throughout the course. Maybe this is the main reason why its participants presented few signs of change in their teaching habits and knowledge regarding geometry teaching / Doutorado / Educação Matematica / Doutor em Educação

Made available in DSpace on 2016-07-27T13:45:07Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 MARCIO LEITE DE BESSA.pdf: 4565646 bytes, checksum: 71be3818ddbcc36d4bb1c64586513203 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-08-20 / The pivotal issue that we sought to clarify was how the organization of the geometry academic curriculum, founded on Davydovs Theory of Developmental Education, could help graduate students of Education formulate the concepts of area and perimeter. Research began with a diagnostic assessment, which revealed a lack ofdomain in students who are beginning the pedagogical program graduation centered on the basic operations of mathematics, specifically focusing on geometry. Beginning with the students shortcomings in the formulation of mathematical concepts, we sought to clarify the following questions: With the teaching of instrumental mathematics based on the theory of Developmental Education, what are the possible effects in the students quality of learning? Could thisteaching foster an environmentof intellectual development in students through learning the basic concepts of geometry, such as perimeter and area? What contradictions involve the practical realization of Developmental Education, in the context of a graduate degree in Pedagogy? What kind of interpretation and evaluation did students use from their learning about perimeter and area, on this alternative for organizing the teaching of mathematics? Therefore, the study aimed to: analyze the contributions of the Davydovs theory of Developmental Education to the organization of geometry and its practical application, in view of the learning of the perimeter and area concepts for students in the first semester of the Pedagogy program. The field study involved a thirty-six-student class in the pedagogy course and a teacher, with whom we developed a formative educational experiment. The investigation consisted of bibliographic and field research. The literature review spanned the periods from 2005 to 2014, focusing on the learning and training of these concepts. Data collection involved questionnaires, reports of the subjects, interviews, and audio and video recordings. The teaching experiment was conducted in eight (8) h(a) for ninety (90) minutes each between February and June 2014. The didactic experiment followed the basic premises of Davydov. In the data analysis, Bogdan & Biklen (1994) guidelines to the categorization and systematization of data were adopted. The data analysis revealed that this studys main contribution was to provide an alternative way of organizing mathematics teaching, considering that the experiment exhibitedthat on average, 85% (eighty five percent) of students demonstrated qualitative changes in the way thinking about the concept of perimeter and 72% (seventy two percent) about the concept of area.

This study, of qualitative nature, are based on participatory research, specifically action research, in view of the proposal for an intervention in the group studied. For the analysis of data produced by the teachers, the content analysis by the very nature of such data was used, the main landmarks references Bardin (1977) and Franco (2005) and for reasons of narrative, which constitute the data from this survey, we rely on Cunha (1997), Souza (2006) and Galvão (2005). The issue of teaching knowledge which is another aspect discussed in this work is grounded by the studies of Tardif (2011), Gauthier (1998) and other researchers dealing with the subject. The perspective is adopted in this research is an investigative work and that does not close at the time of analysis, and opening to the continuity of the reflections that now will be brought here. The object of study is seated in the triad: teaching knowledge, curriculum and teaching of geometry, with the theoretical foundation Silva (2010) in the curriculum conceptions, Leme da Silva and Valente (2014), Lorenzato (2011) and Fainguelernt (1999) in thinking about the geometry of education as well as the theoretical development of Piaget and Inhelder (1993) and Van Hiele (1990). Presented with this dissertation contributions to the continued discussion of teaching knowledge in the educational context, valuing the voice of the teacher of Primary Education Years Initials. As conclusions, we have the teaching knowledge arising announced by the teachers of vocational training, as well as disciplinary, curricular and experiential knowledge in the analyzed narratives. We bring to this indicative study for teacher continuing education concerning the reflective professional attitude and also to learn experiential as knowledge important to be considered in academic research as well as in their own continuing education of teachers.

This research presents a historical study of analytical geometry on a curricular component of teaching degree in Mathematics at Federal University of Juiz de Fora, in the 1960s and 1970s decades. The historical study on the subject was based on the analysis of supplementary material used and indicated as bibliographic reference during decades, in interviews with the author’s professors and ex-students as well as in a research of analytical geometry work. Among the questions we tried to answer in this research we highlight: How was the analytical geometry course structured in UFJF? As the research developed, it was observed that the supplementary material produced by the ex-teacher of UFJF, Helio Siqueira Silveira, had an important role in the stabilization of analytical geometry subject. The conclusion was evidenced thanks to the fact that this material has been mentioned by other geometry professors in bibliographical references and also because the material is borrowed from the library even today. Besides this, we could see that there is not enough analytical geometry work published in Portuguese at the present moment. In order to understand this subject in another context outside UFJF, we compiled the bibliographic collection of Institute Mathematics and Statistics , USP, as well as interviews with professors and ex-students of analytical geometry in that institution. The similarity between these two contexts happened around the stabilization of the subject from a reference text. Among the various observations resulting from the researches, we could notice that the supplementary material presents contents that will be stabilized in the University teaching, as the study of vector, specially from the representation in coordinates and others that do not stabilize themselves such as vectorial and plane geometry.

Title: Construction of elementary pupils' geometric schemas via motivating learning environments Author: Jaroslava Kloboučková Department: Department of mathematics and mathematics education Supervisor: doc. RNDr. Darina Jirotková, Ph.D. Abstract: The aim of the dissertation is to discuss teaching geometry as integral part of mathematics education at the primary school level. The thesis also documents a longitudinal teaching study which was initiated in 2010 and which gives us a base for discussion of some fundamental questions regarding the process of learning geometry for pupils in their early school years. The main objective here is to attempt to answer the following four didactic questions: In which way do pupils learn about geometrical objects? How do they share their geometrical knowledge, experience and discoveries with one another? How much (at what level) are they able to understand mathematical concepts that the official curricular documents (the Czech Framework for Education Program) place in later years of schooling? What phenomena are they able to grasp and describe using their mother tongue? The theoretical framework focuses on the learning process and the typology of mathematical problems in geometry. Four specific engaging environments (Cube Buildings, Origami, Wooden Sticks, and Tiles) and...

Altoumaimi, Rasha, Om Ezzine, Abir January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to execute digital tools in mathematics teaching. The study focuses its attention on how teachers choose the type of the digital tools and carry out mathematics teaching, especially in the subject of geometry. As a future teacher, it will be interesting to investigate the teachers’ views concerning the effect of digitizing on their teaching and students’ learning, as well as the teacher's choice of teaching methods and the design of the teaching within that method, will depend on the lessons of geometry where the use of digital technology is the focus in the classroom. The empirical materials were collected through interviews with seven teachers from three different schools. The data were analyzed with a focus on the ways by which teachers employ digital tools to support and work with mathematical content. The theoretical frameworks in our study are the SAMR model (SAMR is an acronym that stands for four English concepts Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition) that describes how digital tools are used at different stages in teaching and Drijver's orchestration type to identify different teaching methods and describe their characteristics. The results based on the interviews show that most teachers meet requirements for reaching step three in the SAMR model. The study also shows an overview of different teaching methods in mathematics teaching where digital technology is used. The results also show that the teachers utilize several types of orchestration in the work with the subject of geometry in their teaching. In total, this study shows that teachers use up to five different types of orchestration. Generally, all teachers have positive opinions concerning the employment of digital technology in mathematics education, and the utilities of digitization that they spotlight include assisting and supporting students' mathematical knowledge as well as developing their understanding of geometric concepts.

Influence of mathematics vocabulary teaching on primary six learners’ performance in geometry in selected schools in the Greater Accra region of Ghana

Orevaoghene, Ngozi Obiageli 12 1900 (has links)
The study investigated the strategies used in teaching geometry in primary six as well as the perception of teachers on geometry vocabulary teaching, how geometry vocabularies were taught and, lastly, how the teaching of geometry vocabulary influenced primary six learners’ performance in geometry. The Van Hiele Theory of geometrical thinking and the Constructivist Theory of learning guided the study. The study conveniently sampled 250 primary 6 learners and 7 primary 6 mathematics teachers from three privately-owned primary schools in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It combined quantitative and qualitative approaches, using O1–X–O2 design. Data collection instruments were 5-point Likert type scale questionnaires (one for teachers, one for learners), a pre-test and post-test of basic geometry, and a semi-structured one-on-one audio-recorded interview of a selected number of learners and all seven teachers. An intervention was carried out in-between the pre-test and post-test, where the researcher taught geometry vocabulary to participants. Quantitative data were analysed using tables, charts, and simple tests while the qualitative analysis involved the transcription of interviews that were coded, categorised and themed. The study found that geometry vocabularies were not taught and that the most commonly used strategy for teaching geometry was the drawing of 2-D shapes and models of 3-D objects on the board. The pre-test and post-test scores were analysed using a paired t-test and the results indicated that the intervention had a positive effect. The qualitative and quantitative results confirmed that the teaching of geometry vocabulary improved learners’ performance in geometry. The study developed a prototype lesson plan for teaching 3-D objects, a geometry vocabulary activity sheet, a sample assessment for prisms and pyramids and recommends a curricular reform to inculcate the teaching of geometry vocabulary in the curriculum with a geometry vocabulary list for learners in each year group, as contribution to knowledge in mathematics education. The study recommends further research to investigate the effect of geometry vocabulary teaching on learners’ performance in geometry across all year groups in the primary school.
