Basso, Gabriel Fernando 22 May 2015 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-05-14T12:14:16Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 5113295 bytes, checksum: 299112e42f72744b732d195da1230c13 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-05-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In this thesis we address issues pertaining to the fluctuations of the electromagnetic field in the optical domain, both experimentally as well as theoretically and numerically. It was experimentally demonstrated the interdependence between the degree of polarization and the degree of coherence of thermal optical fields. We analyzed the results and explained them in light of a new unifying theory. We have shown a way to control the coerence of light through polarization manipulations, concluding with a proposal for a simple thermal light source with a tunable spectral electromagnetic degree of coherence. We expanded the concept of a tunable light source, suggesting a partially coherent and partially polarized light source with complete control of the so called generalized Stokes parameters by mixing polarized stochastic optical fields. We obtain theoretically the statistical properties of the resulting optical field and their dependence on the properties of the primary fields. We discuss fundamental properties of the mixture of stochastic fields and point out some peculiarities through examples. All results are demonstrated through numerical simulations. We suggest a method to investigate the spatial statistical properties of gaussian stochastic fields through the Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometer, an admittedly simple experimenal method. We show theoretically that it is possible to measure the generalized Stokes parameters, thus allowing one to rebuild the coherence matrix and the polarization matrix of the field, completely characterizing the optical field both statistically and locally in the observation plane. We suggest a technique for the automation of the method, and also some applications. These many studies on the statistical properties of optical fields led us to a deeper understanding of the physical meanings of the parameters for characterizing them. From this understanding we also discuss a change to the definition of the cross-polarization degree and the significance of optical coherence in terms of this new definition. / Nesta tese abordamos problemas concernentes às flutuações do campo eletromagnético no domínio ótico, tanto experimentalmente quanto teoricamente e numericamente.

I regnbågens skugga : En analys av kommuners diskurser kring våld inom hbt-relationer

Egilsson, Anna, Östlund-Blom, Madeilene January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate how the Swedish municipal welfare system, in their capacity as discourse makers, construct Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in the relationships of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people. A discourse analysis of their official plans of action regarding IPV and the information directed towards their citizens through their webpages showed that the discourse surrounding IPV revealed a gender dichotomy, where the victim was mainly constructed as being female and the perpetrator as male. As a consequence of this, gay and bisexual men were rendered invisible from the discourse surrounding victims of IPV, although they could be included in the construction of perpetrators of it. Lesbian and bisexual women were often included in the understanding of victims of IPV, but in the discourse surrounding perpetrators of it they were made invisible. The discourse about IPV also excluded the experiences and vulnerability of people who identify as being transgendered. Additionally, the discourse surrounding IPV was characterized by heteronormative assumptions regarding the relationships in which violence is possible. The help defined in the documents included in this study also showed a gender dichotomy in the construction of help directed towards victims and perpetrators of IPV. The relationship between them was also once more understood through heteronormative assumptions.

How the elder LGBT population is being made invisible : Experiences and perceptions of elderly care

Söderlind Serrander, Rasmus January 2010 (has links)

Although Sweden is considered to be in the lead concerning an open-minded perception of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population, very little attention has been given to the elderly within this target group. The elder LGBT population’s got special needs that haven’t been made sufficiently visible, neither as a research field, from social institutions nor from the LGBT movement itself. This study has described the target group's specific needs, based on the results of a focus group consisting of older LGBT people. Their experiences and stories have given an idea of what adjustments must be made to satisfy their specific needs. These needs have included the development of housing with LGBT focus, education for health care workers, information about the existence of the target group to other elderly and changes in the practice of social workers. Respondents' attitudes, opinions and ideas have been analyzed by means of queer theory, ageism and the intersectional perspective. Finally, the results have been discussed and a few recommendations are provided.

Using complementary silicon-germanium transistors for design of high-performance rf front-ends

Seth, Sachin 07 May 2012 (has links)
The objective of the research presented in this dissertation is to explore the achievable dynamic range limits in high-performance RF front-ends designed using SiGe HBTs, with a focus on complementary (npn + pnp) SiGe technologies. The performance requirements of RF front-ends are high gain, high linearity, low dc power consumption, very low noise figure, and compactness. The research presented in this dissertation shows that all of these requirements can easily be met by using complementary SiGe HBTs. Thus, a strong case is made in favor of using SiGe technologies for designing high dynamic range RF front-ends. The contributions from this research are summarized as follows: 1. The first-ever comparison study and comprehensive analysis of small-signal linearity (IIP3) for npn and pnp SiGe HBTs on SOI. 2. A novel comparison of large-signal robustness of npn and pnp SiGe HBTs for use in high-performance RF front-ends. 3. A systematic and rigorous comparison of SiGe HBT compact models for high-fidelity distortion modeling. 4. The first-ever feasibility study of using weakly-saturated SiGe HBTs for use in severely power constrained RF front-ends. 5. A novel X-band Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) using weakly-saturated SiGe HBTs. 6. Design and comprehensive analysis of RF switches with enhanced large-signal linearity. 7. Development of novel methods to reduce crosstalk noise in mixed-signal circuits and the first-ever analysis of crosstalk noise across temperature. 8. Design of a very high-linearity cellular band quadrature modulator for use in base-station applications using first-generation complementary SiGe HBTs.

Det normalt avvikande : Ett mångfaldsperspektiv på medierapporteringenom könsneutrala äktenskap / The legitimate divergent : A multidimensional perspective on media reports about gender-neutral marriage

Carlén-Hallström, Linda, Hansson, Eva January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine the media coverage of gender-neutral marriage from an intersectional perspective – with particular regard to gender, sexual orientation and religion. By focusing on the spokespeople who appears in the articles we have made an attempt to answer questions regarding who was heard in the debate on gender-neutral marriage and how the homosexual couples are portrayed in relation to the above criteria. The collected material consists of 89 articles, published in 2009, in Swedish newspapers which have been analysed by using quantitative content analysis. Ten articles have also been selected for a critical discourse analysis based on Norman Fairclough’s approach. The study is based on a social constructionist perspective and the assumption that language is of crucial importance when it comes to the creation and maintenance of social categorisation. Theories of gender/queer and intersectionality have furthermore been used to enable us to look at the topic from a multidimensional point of view. The quantitative analysis of the texts shows a great predominance of male spokespersons. Moreover, it appears that religions other than Christianity are largely underrepresented. The same pattern applies to people with homosexual orientation, whom are rarely heard on the issue of gender-neutral marriage. Furthermore, the results show that bisexuals and trans-gendered are almost completely excluded from the debate. The qualitative part of the study points in the same direction. A membership in The Church of Sweden is presented as a natural norm in the case of homosexuality and gender-neutral marriage, and homosexuals with another religion are made invisible or represented as divergent. The texts reveal a tolerance and openness towards homosexuality, but also strong assimilation ideals. The results show that same-sex relationships are portrayed as something the society is expected to accept, but only on condition that they are formed in accordance with the heterosexual norms concerning marriage and relationships, and also follow norms regarding gender and religion.

Machobögen, Brukspatronen, Vapendragaren & Queerkvinnan : En kvalitativ analys av män och kvinnor i HBT-magasinet QX / The macho fagot, the squire, the supporter and the queer woman. : A qualitative analysis of men and women in the LGBT magazine QX.

Granquist, Maria, Helgoson, Andreas January 2010 (has links)
The aim of our study was to examine how homosexual and heterosexual men and women are represented in the Swedish magazine QX, a magazine for gay, bisexual and transgender people. We wanted to find out what kind of roles the persons in QX appears in, and inquire the relationships that exist between them. We analyzed the texts in twelve magazines, from December 2008 to November 2009, in order to get the most current results as possible. We used a discourse analysis, with focus on identities, relationships and the representation of the world. Representations, gender, hegemonic masculinity and stereotypes have been significant theories to analyze our results. The results showed that the successful gay man is the most important person in QX. He is the perfect masculine macho fagot, who is highest in rank. Something we found remarkable is that the gay women are subordinate to men, despite that QX is a magazine for both parts. The results also showed that homosexual women are represented more stereotyped than the homosexual men. The heterosexual men are represented as the homosexual men’s supporter, while heterosexual women are represented very queer and argues that a human’s gender, is not primarily in focus when it comes to relations. In our results, we could also see that, generally, there is a more sexistic tone in texts about men than in texts about women.

Applied Mechanical Tensile Strain Effects on Silicon Bipolar and Silicon-Germanium Heterojunction Bipolar Devices

Nayeem, Mustayeen B. 18 July 2005 (has links)
This work investigates the effects of post-fabrication applied mechanical tensile strain on Silicon (Si) Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) and Silicon-Germanium (SiGe) Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor (HBT) devices. Applied strain effects on MOSFET transistors are being heavily explored, both in academia and industry, as a possible alternative to dimensional scaling. This thesis focuses on how strain affects Si BJT and SiGe HBTs, where tensile strain is applied after the Integrated Circuit (IC) fabrication has been completed, using a unique mechanical method. The consequence of both biaxial and uniaxial strain application has been examined in this work. Chapter I gives a short introduction to the scope of this work, the motivation for conducting this research and the contributions of this experiment. Chapter II entails a brief discussion on Si bipolar and SiGe heterojunction bipolar device physics, which are key to the understanding of strain induced effects. Chapter III provides a thorough summary of the current state of research regarding applied strain, also known as Strain Engineering. It covers different types, orientations, and application techniques of strain. Chapter IV, highlights the details of this experiment, and also presents the measured results. It is observed that for this particular method of biaxial tensile strain application, the collector current (IC) and current gain degrades for both Si BJT and SiGe HBT. Base current (IB) decreases in Si BJT, though it increases for SiGe HBT after strain. Little or no change is noticed in the dynamic or ac small-signal characteristics like unity-gain cutoff frequency (fT) and base resistance (rBB) after strain. Uniaxially strained SiGe HBT samples showed similar results as the biaxial strain. This chapter also attempts to explain the origin of these strain induced changes. Chapter V, summarizes the finding of this experiment, and concludes the thesis with some future directions for this research.

Cryogenic operation of silicon-germanium heterojunction bipolar transistors and its relation to scaling and optimization

Yuan, Jiahui 04 February 2010 (has links)
The objective of the proposed work is to study the behavior of SiGe HBTs at cryogenic temperatures and its relation to device scaling and optimization. Not only is cryogenic operation of these devices required by space missions, but characterizing their cryogenic behavior also helps to investigate the performance limits of SiGe HBTs and provides essential information for further device scaling. Technology computer aided design (TCAD) and sophisticated on-wafer DC and RF measurements are essential in this research. Drift-diffusion (DD) theory is used to investigate a novel negative differential resistance (NDR) effect and a collector current kink effect in first-generation SiGe HBTs at deep cryogenic temperatures. A theory of positive feedback due to the enhanced heterojunction barrier effect at deep cryogenic temperatures is proposed to explain such effects. Intricate design of the germanium and base doping profiles can greatly suppress both carrier freezeout and the heterojunction barrier effect, leading to a significant improvement in the DC and RF performance for NASA lunar missions. Furthermore, cooling is used as a tuning knob to better understand the performance limits of SiGe HBTs. The consequences of cooling SiGe HBTs are in many ways similar to those of combined vertical and lateral device scaling. A case study of low-temperature DC and RF performance of prototype fourth-generation SiGe HBTs is presented. This study summarizes the performance of all three prototypes of these fourth-generation SiGe HBTs within the temperature range of 4.5 to 300 K. Temperature dependence of a fourth-generation SiGe CML gate delay is also examined, leading to record performance of Si-based IC. This work helps to analyze the key optimization issues associated with device scaling to terahertz speeds at room temperature. As an alternative method, an fT -doubler technique is presented as an attempt to reach half-terahertz speeds. In addition, a roadmap for terahertz device scaling is given, and the potential relevant physics associated with future device scaling are examined. Subsequently, a novel superjunction collector design is proposed for higher breakdown voltages. Hydrodynamic models are used for the TCAD studies that complete this part of the work. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are explored in the analysis of aggressively-scaled SiGe HBTs.

Nilsson, Emma, Carlqvist, Ann-Britt January 2012 (has links)
The objective of the study at hand is to analyze and study which educational and organizational conditions the social workers believe exist in order for them to meet the need for support for those who have experienced violence in an LGBT-relationship. Furthermore, the purpose is to investigate and analyze the social workers' descriptions and notions of the terms "power", "norms" and "values" in conjunction with the practical work with violence in LGBT-relationships. The study has a phenomenographical approach and is based on interviews with social workers who work with violence in close relationships. In the study, we have used the perspective of power as a theoretical frame of reference. The result shows that personal as well as the society's norms and values have a great influence on how the clients are treated in the practical work carried out. The social workers accentuate the importance of revised policies and action plans, since they make a good support in the daily work. The fact that LGBT-persons are a neglected group, the socialworkers agree upon, since only one of our informants have experience of meeting people who have been subjected to violence in LGBT-relationships. The social workers stress the importance of being gender-neutral in their approach, at the same time as it is crucial to keep a scrutinizing discussion within the organization, in order to make this group visible. To sum up, the result in our study shows that power is present in both individual, organisational and community levels, when it comes to social work regarding violence in LGBT-relationships.

: An Analysis of Library Staff's Thoughts on Working with LGBTQ-issues in a Children's Library

Abrahamson, Åsa January 2015 (has links)
This study examines the experiences of public library staff who works in an LGBTQ-profiled children’s library. The aim of the study is further to find out whether the library as an institution can challenge heteronormativity or if traditional gender identities are reproduced. I have conducted five qualitative interviews with librarians who all work in the same library, and who all work with children to some extent. The interview material is analyzed with queer theory and norm critical theories of pedagogy. These perspectives wish to critically examine heteronormativity and change what is defined as normal. The result of the study shows that the way the library works with separate rainbow shelves, where LGBTQ-themed material is gathered, is pointing out LGBTQ as something different. And although it may also shed a light on a group formerly made invisible, it is reproducing traditional gender identities and leaves heteronormativity unquestioned. By contrast, the way the librarians are working with always including LGBTQ-materials in programming as storytimes and book presentations, is challenging the dominant position of heterosexuality. It is also shown that the way the library staff has developed their written and oral communication with the patrons, including using the gender neutral pronomina ”hen” and alternatives to ”mom and dad”, is increasing the possibilities of an inclusive reception in the library. The oral communication is for various reasons not always used though. In conclusion the interviews show that the librarians are positive to working with LGBTQ-issues although they sometimes tend to forget. The study further concludes that the library’s way of working with LGBTQ-issues is both reproducing traditional gender identities, and challenging heteronormative structures. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.
