WIKILEAKS; en spark i rumpan för journalistiken? : Svenska journalister och Wikileaks

Lavesson, Emma January 2011 (has links)
Wikileaks is using the new technical solutions to mount big leaks, consisting of secret or sensitive information from the government, institutions and business. This might profoundly change the media reality and it certainly means both new opportunities and new challenges for traditional media; the conditions for the journalists, the sources and the news reporting are changing. In this thesis the relationship between Swedish journalists and Wikileaks has been the focus; they both affect each other but the conditions for this relationship is not yet clear. Clearly there is an interdependence, but who really is dependent on the other and to which degree they are dependent on each other is still a question without a given answer. The aim of this thesis has been to discern a new journalism, and how this responds to the theories of Public Journalism and Journalistik 3.0. The main aim has been to examine what Swedish journalist thinks about Wikileaks, what their attitude towards Wikileaks are,  if and how they think that Wikileaks have affected the Swedish journalism. The aim has also been to look at journalism and Wikileaks today and see if it can be said that they are influenced by Public Journalism or Journalism 3.0. To examine this a qualitative study have been used: ten journalists from four of Sweden’s largest newspapers have answered a list of questions. The answers then have been analyzed and compared to Public Journalism and Journalistik 3.0, these theories have been chosen with the help of John Pavliks thoughts about the technical development affect on journalism, and these are aslo used in the analyze. To put the analyze in context and give a understanding for why the aim of the thesis and the questions asked are relevant the first part of the thesis gives a background to journalism, the technical development and the Internet and how they have affected each other. As said this gives context to the empiric, but it is also used in the analyze and in the results, to answer the questions asked. The conclusions that could be drawn from this study is that Swedish journalists have a generally positive attitude to Wikileaks, especially concerning Wikileaks basic idea. They think it is positive that the organization is making it easier to access information that has been secret or sensitive and could help them reveal anomalies. But there is some cautions, concerning the big mass of information published and the scrutiny and screening this material is in need of, something that is expensive. The journalists do not think that Wikileaks yet have affected the journalism in any profound way; they say that the news production and the way they work still is the same. But the organization has shed light on shortcomings in how media is handling sources with digital information. Wikileaks also have caused the launch of other whistleblower-sights. In the future journalists might have a more filtering and screening role, and investigative journalism might be done from behind the desk. Special workgroups might work only with material from Wikileaks and other whistleblower-sights and cooperation between these organizations and journalists might become more frequent. Because Wikileaks allows the audience access to the source material they give the audience more power to influence the news reporting, it might also result that the source material more frequently is being published with the news articles. Regarding Public Journalism and the journalists it could be said that they, at least to some extent, have a similar view at the journalism as Public Journalism. Wikileaks can be seen as an expression of Public Journalism, as they counter too many of the ideals and cornerstones in the theory. Wikileaks also counter a lot of the characteristics found in Journalistik 3.0. According to the answers provided by the journalists it also could be said that a new journalism in large measure up to the characteristics in Journalistik 3.0.  Author: Emma Lavesson  Tutor: Anne-Marie Morhed Aim: The main aim of this thesis has been to examine what Swedish journalists think about Wikileaks, what their attitude towards Wikileaks are, if and how journalists think that Wikileaks have affected the Swedish journalism. The need to assess emotional distress in psycho-oncology: Science or fiction?

Moscoso, Manolete S., Knapp, Melissa 25 September 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the factor structure of the Emotional Distress Inven-tory (EDI) in a sample of 238 cancer patients. The conceptual framework that guided the development of the EDI, factor structure, internal consistency, and convergent validity are reported. Emotional distress items were developed and administered to cancer patients who initiated chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments at Morton Plant Hospital Cancer Center in Clearwater, Florida, USA. Item responses were examined by factor analyses of principal components with promax rotations. The EDI presents three subscales that assess anxiety/depression, hopelessness, and anger expression as components of emotional distress. We also discuss the important implications of these subscales, particularly the inclusion of anger expression and hopelessness in the assessment of emotional distress in cancer patients.

This antibiotic group is active against most enterobacteria and non-fermenting gram-negative bacteria, ocular, urinary tract, meninges, and bloodstream infections. The recommended dose of polymyxin B (PMB) in patients with normal renal function is 1.5 to 2.5 mg.kg-1.day-1 and the dose can be divided twice. For patients with impaired renal function, it is recommended to adjust the dose according to creatinine clearance. Because nephrotoxicity is the major limiting factor in the use of this class of antibiotics, a retrospective observational study was conducted to identify possible risk factors for the development of acute renal injury (ARF) in patients using the antibiotic PMB. The necessary information was collected to perform the study in medical records, medical prescriptions and results of laboratory tests from the patients who used PMB in a period of 5 years in a Brazilian hospital. Inclusion criteria for the study were: patients over 18 years of age who used intravenous PMB for more than 72 hours. To classify ARI levels, baseline creatinine was calculated by the average of the last five serum creatinine tests before the first dose of the antibiotic. This calculated value and the highest level of serum creatinine during treatment were used to identify and classify renal damage according to the criteria of the RIFLE (Risk, Injury and Failure and Loss and End-stage renal disease) filtration rate. The study included 120 patients, most of them male (89; 74.2%) with an average age of 50 years. The most frequent pre-existing comorbidities were systemic hypertension (50; 41.7%), diabetes mellitus (21; 17.5%), nephropathies (14; 11.7%) and obesity (13; 10.8%). The main infection was pneumonia (35.8%) and the most frequently identified infectious agent was Acinetobacter baumannii (67.9%). PMB treatments were performed for 13 days and the average daily dose was 191.5 mg. The high incidence of mortality in the studied population (46.7%) may be related to the critical clinical status of the patients, because at some point of hospitalization, 111 patients (92.5%) needed intensive care. In the population studied to evaluate risk factors, 12 patients (13.5%) presented risk, 22 (25.0%) injury, 30 (34.1%) renal failure, according to RIFLE criteria. In addition, in the group that patients developed ARF, 51.9% died, whereas in the group that did not present, only 12.5% died. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups that developed or not ARF, for the following variables: treatment time greater than 10 days, accumulated PMB dose, hypoalbuminemia and concomitant use of furosemide. However, the variables that remained in the final multivariate logistic regression model were treatment time greater than 10 days and hypoalbuminemia. Several factors inherent to the patient and the drug are related to ARF and strategies should be created in order to minimize these effects. The monitoring of renal function in all patients, especially those at risk, and the follow-up of the infection to reduce the time of treatment are highlighted.

[en] AMERICAN GEOPOLITICAL OPTIONS: THE CASE OF PERSIAN GULF / [pt] AS OPÇÕES DE GEOPOLÍTICA AMERICANA: O CASO DO GOLFO PÉRSICO

PAULA RUBEA BRETANHA MENDONCA EBRAICO 03 April 2006 (has links)
[en] The Persian Gulf produces about thirty per cent of the world's oil, while holding more than a half of the world's crude oil reserves. The geographical concentration of the most important energy resource that holds the world's contemporary technological standard, puts this region in a very important place for the geopolitical options for all countries in the International System. However, the Persian Gulf is a political unstable region in the world, in less than thirty years was involved in three international wars: in the eighties The Iran-Iraq War, in the nineties The Gulf War and recently The American Invasion of Iraq. These conflicts were known by the use or by the threat of use weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and by the heavy casualties in the countries involved in the war. This dissertation analyses the American participation in these three conflicts taking as referential geopolitical concepts, once the specificity of the region demands the rebirth of this discipline that was so often forgotten in the international analyses. The geopolitics emphasize the geographical impact over politics, so the oil reserves in the territory of the Persian Gulf, the energy heartland, will influence the relationship with the others States in the International System. This study examines the American geopolitical options for the region, once a secure access to Persian Gulf is America's national vital interest.

The manufacture of the State : the education of middle managers for public administration in Regional Administration Institutes (1966-2013)

Quéré, Olivier 17 October 2014 (has links)
Every year in France, about 700 administrative officers (French attachés) get hired thanks to a competition. They are neither street level bureaucrats nor top civil servants, but these civil servants constitute most of the intermediate administrative staff of public services. Yet, they remain mostly invisible to citizens and little known to social scientists. Since 1970, Regional Administration Institutes (IRA) have been designed to merge and homogenize the recruitment, training, and practices of these public agents. The study of those educational institutions sheds light on the process through which the State assigns these middle managers a specific mandate.Combining sociological approaches of public administration and of socialization, three perspectives related to the middle managers’ training are being developed. First, a socio-historical analysis of the reforms of the IRA sheds light on hardships encountered by the administration in establishing an inter-ministerial “corps”. This approach allows us to understand compromises between ministries that allow the stabilization of the training’s organization. Then, within the IRA institution, the study of prescribed and taught knowledge enlightens the different activities entrusted to middle managers during their training. These skills shape various figures of the public services' middle managers. Finally, an ethnographic approach of processes of socialization within the IRA institution shows that the mandate of the attaché also stems from various modes of appropriation and discrepancies from institutional expectations. These three sites of investigation constitute an interesting vantage point of two type of deep-seated tensions among middle management. First, the tension between the unification of the group and its scattering. Then, that between the attachés’ autonomy and their participation in the “dirty work” chain of delegation. Both manager and managed, both technician and non-specialist, both legal expert and team leader, the mandate of these middle managers fluctuates depending on what the State wants to achieve with its administration.

Sinn Féin - en studie av ett politiskt partis legitimitet ur medborgarnas synvinkel / Sinn Féin – a study of legitimacy of a political party in the eyes of the citizens

Åkesson, Eva January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to study the republican and socialist Northern Ireland political party Sinn Féin and to examine its legitimacy in the eyes of the citizens of Northern Ireland. Is it possible to have a political agenda that includes violence and still maintain legitimacy? The Irish Republican Army’s (IRA) military struggle was for a long time a part of the party’s political agenda. This strategy has been described as to have a ballot paper in one hand and an Armalite in the other, and successfully made Sinn Féin one of the province’s largest political parties. I have examined the time period from 1989 to present time. My concept of legitimacy is based on a theory by the political scientist Mikael Axberg, who describes legitimacy to be a concept that contains three different parts: a legal, a democratic and a sociological perspective. Methodically this essay is both a qualitative and quantitative study.  The main question of the essay is:”Can Sinn Féin be considered to be a political party of a legitimate foundation in the eyes of the citizens?”. In order to examine this question I have used three sub questions: 1) Is Sinn Féin, from a legal understanding of legitimacy, a legitimate party? 2) Is Sinn Féin, from a democratic understanding of legitimacy, a legitimate party? 3) Is Sinn Féin, from a sociological understanding of legitimacy, a legitimate party? Of course this is not the only way to understand legitimacy and approach this problem, but it is the way I find most useful in order to answer the question. The sub questions have a wide range and include three different perspectives, which provides a good foundation for answering the main question of the essay. The essay comes to the conclusion that Sinn Féin is a legitimate party in the eyes of the citizens, if the polarisation of the society is considered. Catholic and protestant citizens have very different views on the legitimacy of Sinn Féin. The essay concludes that if a society is as polarised as Northern Ireland, that has to be taken into account when questions of legitimacy are examined.

Varför terrorism? - en studie av Irländska republikanska armén

Becevic, Zulmir January 2006 (has links)
Abstract This study has two aims: [X] to create an analytical framework consisting of factors that might trigger terrorism [X] to apply the analytical framework on the case of IRA, in order to be able to examine which factors that exist behind the appearance of terrorism in the current case To reach the first aim the author has studied the theoretical discourse on the complexed issue of terrorism. This has constituted the point of departure for the creation of an own analytical framework. The purpose of the framework is to bring clearness to why terrorism appears. The analytical framework is not only suited for application on the case of IRA, but for application on terrorismcases in general. To reach the second aim the framework was applied on the case of IRA. The aims of this study have been fulfilled through the method of qualitative text analysis. The research method has been applied on the theoretical discourse on terrorism as well as on the empirical texts that deal with the conflict in Northern Ireland and the NorthernIrish society in general. The results of the study suggest that factors triggering terrorism Favourable surroundings, Resources, Possibility to recruit members, Protracted armed conflict, Occupation, Strive for autonomy, Diplomatic deadlock, Poverty, and Specific events, or actions from the opponent all exist in the case at hand. The author would particularly like to highlight the importance of the Diplomatic deadlock and Poverty as terrorismtriggering factors.

Castañeda Ribeyro, Ariana Marilia 10 December 2021 (has links)
Introduction: Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI) are a very prevalent group of diseases, lower ARTI represent the fourth cause of death worldwide. In children, the two most usual agents are Rhinovirus (RV) and Syncytial respiratory virus (SRV). RV is responsible for most is related with lower respiratory tract infections. Scientists have identified three RV species (A, B, C), recent studies have reported that symptomatology and severity vary within RV species. Objective: Asses the prevalence of Rhinovirus on nasopharyngeal swab samples of children with clinical diagnosis of ARTI in Lima, Peru during 2009-2010. Materials and method: Retrospective study about nasopharyngeal swab on children, which were processed through RT-PCR technique to identify RV and its species. The study population was pediatric patients, with clinical diagnosis of ARTI, at Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia. This investigation project will be revised by the ethics committee from Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas. Results: RVA was detected in 10.26% of cases, RVB 16-67% and RVC in 73.9%. The most prevalent age group was the 0-5 months old. The most common signs and symptoms were cough, fever, rhinorrhea, and respiratory distress. The study found association between wheezing and RVA infection, cough, wheezing and conjunctival injection and RVC infection. There was a peak in RVC cases during the March, June, and November. Conclusion: We found a high prevalence for RVC infection, mainly in children between 0-5 months old. Monthly distribution showed an increase of RVC cases during March and June; epidemiological surveillance and longitudinal studies should be encouraged. / Tesis
