Queering the Cross-Cultural Imagination: (Trans)Subjectivity and Wilson Harris's The Palace of the PeacockLor, Prathna 04 1900 (has links)
The Palace of the Peacock. / This study contains two parts: a theoretical component and a literary text. The theoretical component discusses desire as a thematic and philosophical methodology in Wilson Harris’s The Palace of the Peacock. Chapter one argues that Harris paradoxically makes use of forms of empirical desire to demonstrate its epistemological limits. Chapter two discusses the problematic situation of female subjectivity in relation to male subjects, through environmental and anatomic metaphors, which Harris’s writing necessitates. Chapter three discusses contemporary poetics in order to situate my impetus for literary writing and attempts to salvage some of Harris’s theoretical concepts in dialogue with my own poetics. Chapter four contains the creative writing project, HEROISM/EULOGIES—an excerpt from a larger project—that charts the movement of various subjects across an imagined American landscape.

Human/NatureWu, Shuangshuang 01 January 2006 (has links)
This project has evolved from my own observation of our deteriorating living environments. I am exploring the development of a visual story to represent my contemplation of humankind's consumption, and how it endangers the balance of the natural world. Through drawing and animation, I hope to develop a visual language and an approach to storytelling that will inspire people to think about balancing economic, environmental, and ethical issues in design and development, and to advocate a simple honest life and noninterference with the necessary course of natural events.

JOURNEYS INTO THE UNKNOWN: A SERIES OF SCIENCE ARCHITECTURE TASKS AND EVENTS, SPACE-BOUND EXPLORATIONS AND FAR-TRAVELS, DISCOVERIES AND MISSES (NEAR AND FAR), IMAGINATIVE SPACE-GAZING AND RELATED INVESTIGATIONS, OBSERVATIONS, ORBITS, AND OTHER REPETITIOUS MONITORING TASKSBeeferman, Leah 01 January 2010 (has links)
This thesis expansively and inclusively puts forth the imaginings, research, processes and experiences behind my two thesis exhibitions, "Journeys into the unknown: a series of science architecture tasks and events, space-bound explorations and far-travels, discoveries and misses (near and far), imaginative space-gazing and related investigations, observations, orbits, and other repetitious monitoring tasks" and "Timed travel: asystematic accounts of regular and geometrical timekeeping, orbital flight, repetitive rotations and other journeys into actual time and slow space." It begins with an abstract interpretation of the dial: a tool not limited to scientific measurement but, instead, a gauge of an object’s overall position and general status. Equal parts scientific information, abstracted and fictionalized instruments and facts, and the personal experiences which provided these concrete informational elements with psychological and metaphorical meaning, this document is as much a record of time as it is an elucidation of my artistic practice and methodology.

Kantova nauka o schematismu / Kant's Theory of SchematismBis, Ondřej January 2015 (has links)
The thesis focuses on a chapter from Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, "The Schematism of the Pure Concepts of the Understanding". Kant assumes two independent sources of knowledge, understanding and intuition. These sources need to be overcome, because of their heterogeneity. Schematism is closely related to "The Deduction of the Pure Concepts of the Understanding". That is why the analysis of schemata is preceded by the analysis of this chapter. It shows a more detailed description of a role of intuition with respect to understanding. Firstly, the validity of the categories regarding whatever form of intuition is proved. Secondly, the proof of the validity of the categories regarding specific forms of time and space follows. The chapter on schematism deals with the specific methods by means of which the categories relate to intuition. Kant introduces transcendental schemata bridging the heterogeneity of understanding and intuition. The relation between category and schema is understood as one of analogy. The categories are rules of discursive type of unity of any kind of intuition, whereas schemata are determined as rules of perceptive unity of intuition. Intuition is brought under unity of apperception by means of schemata of imagination. Inseparable part of the thesis is the schematism of...

L'ange et le monstre : esthétisation foetale et deuil d'enfant : le cas de l'interruption médicale de grossesse (I.M.G) / The angel and the monster : foetal esthetisation and mourning of child : the case of the medical interruption of pregnancy (M.I.P)Boullier, Jean-François 23 January 2015 (has links)
This thesis analyses the evolution of imagination of the pregnancy for forty years as well as some of its social incidences. The science embryologist had installed since the 19 th century a realist tradition of presentation of the human foetus. During half of the 20 th, things seem to change. In 1970, the photographs of Lennart Nilsson in particular coloured, empowered, aestheticized and humanized the foetus. In France, the ‟anatomical foetus” saw itself besides out-of- the way of the museums, its image absent in in the ‟illustrated medical Larousse” and the textbooks of natural sciences. As for the foetus present in the contempory art, it is oversized or disgusting : what looks like mots of ‟real” foetus derealises. The haptonomy and certain technologies around the pregnancy are going to stress these modifications of the image of the foetus for the benefit of parental imagination. The social effects of the foetal idealization are varied. The humanisation of the ‟beautiful foetus” making ugly anomaly, the maternal obsession of the ‟foetal monster” is more interiorized and discorders work in foetal medicine. Their refusal of anomaly becoming more implicit, doctors and parents adopt an euphemized language. But, even the image of the aborted foetus fallen through humanizes. It becomes moving. When a foetus is condemned, it will thus have to be repaired concretely and symbolically. The nursing who invite the relatives to see the foetus after his death will present him as a sleeping baby, repaired by his deformations. Certain mother especially when they envisage a new pregnancy, represent him then as an angel, this angel become omnipresent on the Internet forums. This dispositf questions the contemporary societies : the specialists of foetal medicine are faced with certain parents refusing the birth of a child affected by deformations without gravity. In the miror of their baby appears an unspeakable : the horror of an expanding foetus of anomaly. Does not the esthetisation make the imagination of the anomaly all the more powerful as they do not have more space other than the heart of hearts to spread ?

THE ROLE OF IDENTITY AND IMAGINATION IN THE LITERATE PRACTICES OF ADOLESCENT GIRLS: FOUR CASE STUDIES FROM INDIAYing Nie (6619163) 14 May 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative case study is to explore the literacy practices of marginalized adolescent youth in India and the relationship of these practices to imagination and identity construction. More than just tools for communication, language and literacy practices allow individuals to express their selves and identities as they voice their thoughts, negotiate meaning (Dyson & Genishi, 2005; Gee, 2003), and enact themselves within society (Janks, 2010; New London Group, 1996). This qualitative case study took place in Lucknow, India; the subjects were a group of adolescent girls at a nonprofit all-girls school in a seventh-grade classroom. Using discourse analysis, the data revealed the ways in which the girls used literacy to agentively position themselves as actual selves in their societies, as imagined social selves and others, in relationship to social others, and in imagined events.

Distress, uso da imaginação e coping de professores da rede de ensino pública do Município de São Paulo / Distress, use of imagination and coping of teachers of the public education network of the Municipality of São PauloGallegos, Saul Sebastian Orozco 17 May 2019 (has links)
A Resiliência conseguida, com estratégias de Coping e Imaginação, evitou ou proporcionou o a superação do Burnout nos professores e professoras / The present study investigates the level of distress of highschool teachers of public schools in the city of São Paulo, the Coping strategies they developed, the use of imagination in their development and the success achievedwith their application in Personal and professional life of these teachers. Ten teachers with these characteristics were interviewed and their answers to a list of 10 questions were classified and suplementized according to the transactional matrix of Lazarus and Folkman, 1984, the Stress Coping evolution Classification of Vasconcellos, 2016 and an evaluation matrix for the use of imagination, developed by this author (Gallegos, 2019).The objective of this project was to investigate: the possible influence of imagination on the resilience of primary and secondary school teachers in unfavorable environments. Such situations of precariousness can characterize the current state of schools or not. However, the teachers investigated should have experienced the unfavorable period and acted to overcome this state. According to the theory of Burnout, these problems can trigger depersonalization within the school, in the individuals who afford it, and also in the school organization. The methodology for collecting these data, on an empirical basis, is based on a semi-structured personal interview, whose results are analyzed with positive or negative aspects, negative in transition. This procedure was chosen because it allows qualitative reports that are larger than questionnaires and personal observations for long periods in the research field. Previous contacts have been made to identify teachers who was experienced in using the imagination to evoke cases of resilience and also who had or was facing psychological Distress. An interview was then scheduled at the school, with the consent of the school subjection. The research was carried out with primary and high school teachers in the public schools of São Paulo. Results in the social aspect showed psychological Distress in practically all of them in childhood and adolescence. This also happened early in the careers, but everyone overcame the problems. In the situational aspect the religion had strong repercussion in the majority; two of them are atheist one respects the religions, the other atheist is against any religion. All teachers used daydreaming, but the unconscious imagination few have used, and none of them had strategies to reach and master such these sources. When it comes to hypnagogy, some have already gotten solutions with this technique, but they did not know how to make it useful. In the external aspect everyone had 15 achieved success in their careers, each with this concept. The resilience achieved with Coping strategies and a lot of imagination, avoided or provided the over-run of the Burnout to teachers

The present dissertation proposes an analysis of the critical games in Joca Reiners Terrons book Sonho interrompido por guilhotina (2006). The analysis is concentrated on the appropriation of writers Valêncio Xavier, José Agrippino de Paula, Glauco Mattoso and Raduan Nassar, who emerge along the book as characters, subject or by quotations, through procedures which make the stories on the book to textually cross their work. Such strategies are herein understood as poetics of reading, i.e., structural configurations of a kind of critical-creative assimilation of objects, consonant to the propositions of theorist Paul Zumthor on critical imagination. It is fundamental, to the analysis of such strategies along the book, the understanding of culture as found on the concept and field of research of the semiosphere, opened by semiotician Yuri Lotman, especially on its concepts of memory of culture and semiotic boundary. Beginning by inserting the research on the field of Communication studies in its connection to Semiotics of Culture, proceeding with the analysis of Joca Reiners Terrons book, the dissertation turns out to an understanding of reading which is simultaneously extracted from the object and replicated in the research.

Previous issue date: 2012-10-26 / The thesis proposes detect by analyzing compositions of five so-called "Amazon
Legends Series" by Waldemar Henrique Pará, and the novel "Orphans of Eldorado",
the Amazon Milton Hatoum, the marks of mythic narratives in shaping regional
identity. The Amazonian mythic narratives are based on imaginary hillbilly rich and
fantastical episodes, which now serve as the theme over the years, for inspiration
and poetic literary constructions. Authors like Waldemar Hatoum and stand out, such
as promoters and imaginary in his works reveal the values, beliefs, experiences and
behaviors experienced by his characters in the Amazon region. A collection of
(poetry) songs of poet and composer Waldemar Henrique translates through mythic
narratives sung, the riverine life full of language itself in the Amazon region and
indigenous traditions, enriched content about seduction, charm forest, private wealth,
religiosity; respect for beings of the forest. The poet seems to perpetuate the
Amazonian culture through art spoken and sung. In Hatoum, narratives of native
people reveal a space full of conflict, establishing his characters search for a perfect
place, the lost Eden in the early times and continually sought by man. Waldemar and
Hatoum show that the myths and legends, even if understood as a product of the
imagination, in fact interfere with those who believe in them and mark the
characterization of identity Amazon. The adopted methodological resources are
divided into literature, documentary and analysis tools (and narrative compositions)
of the authors in question. To achieve the objectives, the research develops a
descriptive way, which shows that Waldemar and Hatoum, record that the Amazon
myths still flourish robust, contributing to a polyphony of voices heard in the region,
disclosing a place of vast imaginary dimensions, whose inventory accounts, will
conteúdos sobre sedução; encantos da floresta; riquezas particulares, religiosidade;
respeito aos seres da mata. O poeta parece querer perpetuar a cultura amazônica
amplas dimensões imaginárias, cujas contas do inventário, jamais serão fechadas

Previous issue date: 2016-03-16 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation proposes a reflection about the fantastic mode in literature in the light of a fundamental operation of the cognitive process: the phantasms produced by the imagination. The investigation occurs through a comparative reading between two narratives Edgar Allan Poe s Ligeia (1838) and Mário de Sá-Carneiro s The Great Shadow (1915) , having by theorical support the studies from Remo Ceserani (The Fantastic, 1996), Irène Bessière (Le récit fantastique la poétique de l incertain, 1974) and Giorgio Agamben (Stanzas: word and phantasm in western culture, 1977), as well as Poe s critical reflections found in The philosophy of composition (1845), The poetic principle (1850) and Marginalia (1849) about the links between imaginary phantasms and poetical creation. Taking into consideration the significative diferences between the two texts either by the temporal distance or by the fantastic characteristics (more notable in Ligeia ) , this project asks how the root of the fantastic mode in literature can relate with the imaginative phantasms produced in terms of plot and, more specifically, enunciation. The hypothesis is that both Ligeia and The Great Shadow point to the creation of phantasms by the imaginative faculty as the responsable for the effects of the fantastic. This happens though the singularity of a central enunciative process: the spectral apparitions in both plot and in the multiple visions of the narrator in the poetic-phantasmatic discourse, marked by the crisis in representation. The comparative analysis reveals that the phantasm-fantastic relation manifests itself in both texts, although in different terms: in Ligeia , the procedures of the fantastic mode are everywhere spectres, doubles, projections between light and shadow and terror caused by gothic ambience; and, underneath this plan, lies the narrator-author s phantasmatic discourse. In The Great Shadow , on the other hand, excels the sensationist-phantasmatic narration on the form of a diary, leaving the plot and its phantasmagoric ambiance in second plan / A dissertação desenvolve uma reflexão sobre o modo do fantástico na literatura à luz de uma operação basilar do processo cognitivo-imaginativo, advinda do pensamento clássico de Aristóteles: os fantasmas produzidos pela imaginação.
