A Study of Lexicon and Gesture Production among Children with and without Developmental Language Disorder by Means of the Vocabulary Test PiNG

Olsson, Nelly, Norström Darlin, Maria January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to examine receptive and expressive lexicon, as well as gesture production among children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD), Using the Swedish translation of the Picture Naming Game (PiNG). The parental evaluation Swedish Communicative Development Inventory III (SCDI III) was used to determine whether the results from PiNG and SCDI III were consistent. In this study, 10 children with DLD (study group) and 11 age-matched children with typical language development (control group) between 52 and 70 months of age participated. The participants were tested with PiNG, which is a test that examines reception and production of single nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions. The guardians then completed SCDI III, which contains questions about the language abilities of the child. Gesture production in the form of deictic, iconic and conventional gestures was examined in conjunction with the use of PiNG. The results showed lower results for the study group on PiNG and SCDI III in comparison with the control group. The study group displayed a higher number of gestures than the control group, and in the former group, the use of gestures was positively correlated with the results from PiNG. In the study group, iconic gestures were used to compensate for language difficulties. The results from PiNG and SCDI III were not consistent. The age of the participants problably did not affect any results. The results from the present study indicate that PiNG may be useful when examining lexicon and gesture production among children with DLD. Both groups achieved high results on PiNG which may have affected the use of gestures and also possible correlations. For future studies, it is therefore recommended to apply PiNG on a group of younger children with DLD.

Slovesná valence v srovnávacím pohledu / Verbal Valency in a Cross-Linguistic Perspective

Šindlerová, Jana January 2018 (has links)
Verbal Valency in a Cross-Linguistic Perspective Jana Šindlerová Abstract In the thesis, we look upon differences in argument structure of verbs considering the Czech language and the English language. In the first part, we describe the process of building the CzEngVallex lexicon. In the second part, based on the aligned data of the Prague Czech-English Dependency Treebank, we compare the valencies of verbal translation equivalents and comment of their differences. We classify the differences according to their underlying causes. The causes can be based in the linguistic structure of the languages, they can include translatological reasons, or they can be grounded in the character of the descriptive linguistic theory used.

Comparaison de différentes méthodes de classification : application aux langues bantu du nord-ouest / New approaches in linguistic classification : application to Northwestern Bantu languages

Grollemund, Rebecca 17 September 2012 (has links)
This dissertation is presenting a linguistic classification based on phylogenetic methods borrowed from biology. The sample of languages considered here belongs to the Bantu family, a linguistic sub branch of Niger-Congo languages spoken in Africa. Numerous publications have shown a complexity and the diversity of Bantu languages. Our study focus on the North-West region which includes the following countries: Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo. This new classification is based on the comparison of lexical items. We have organized a database including 100 words from the basic vocabulary for 207 languages. Several tree representations were obtained by using Neighbor-Joining (Saitou and Nei, 1987) and Neighbor-Net (Bryant and Moulton, 2004) algorithms. This study allows us to get a better understanding of the linguistic proximity of these languages. It also provides a historical scenario for Bantu migrations.

When it is just a simple word, we say that the interchangeable words are synonyms; while the term paraphrase is used to express a more general idea and that also may involve more than one word. For example, the sentences "the light is red" and "the light is closed" are examples of paraphrases as "sign" and "traffic light" represent synonymous in this context. Proper treatment of paraphrasing is important in several NLP applications, such as Machine Translation, which paraphrases can be used to increase the coverage of Statistical Machine Translation systems; on Multidocument Summarization, where paraphrases identification allows the recognition of repeated information; and Natural Language Generation, where the generation of paraphrases allows creating more varied and fluent texts. The project described in this document is intended to verify that is possible to learn, in an incremental and automatic way, paraphrases in words level from a bilingual parallel corpus, using Never-Ending Machine Learning (NEML) strategy and the Internet as a source of knowledge. The NEML is a machine learning strategy, based on how humans learn: what is learned previously can be used to learn new information and perhaps more complex in the future. Thus, the NEML has been applied together with the strategy for paraphrases extraction proposed by Bannard and Callison-Burch (2005) where, from bilingual parallel corpus, paraphrases are extracted using a pivot language. In this context, it was developed NEPaL (Never-Ending Paraphrase Learner) AMSF system responsible for: (1) extract the internet texts, (2) align the text using a pivot language, (3) rank the candidates according to a classification model and (4) use the knowledge to produce a new classifier model and therefore gain more knowledge restarting the never-ending learning cycle.

Alves, Cláudia 21 February 2018 (has links)
Due to our belief that a fun and recreational methodology helps children and adolescents achieve better learning performance, this research aimed to carry out playful activities with the purpose of teaching lexicon and using dictionaries as an educational reference tool. This study took place in a seventh grade class of an elementary school in the city of Uberlândia, Brazil. The need of a practical intervention that effectively increases student’s lexical competence justifies this work, since several researchers believe that vocabulary teaching in schools has been undervalued and inefficient. With the development and application of playful activities, students were expected to broaden their active vocabulary, build up greater autonomy in lexicon learning, and use dictionaries more efficiently, acknowledging its lexicographical purpose and better understanding its structure. Our theoretical references focused on teaching of lexicon and application of playful activities as an enabler for learning, and were based on the fields of Lexicology, Lexicography and Pedagogical Lexicography. The theoretical research was guided by the National Curricular Parameters (NCPs) of the Brazilian government, as well as on the studies of Barbosa (1990), Biderman (2001), Ilari and Cunha (2011), Antunes (2012), Dias (2004), Welker (2011), Krieger (2011), Gomes (2011), Almeida (1994), among other authors. The data collected was described by means of graphs and charts in order to track down information that supported our actions and the development of playful activities. The steps elaborated and followed on this research were based on Thiollent’s (1986) action research methodology. The results show that playful activities not only raise student’s interest for learning, but can also be used as an educational resource for teaching vocabulary. This was evidenced after such activities were carried out, since students used the words studied in different moments of interaction in the classroom. / Dissertação (Mestrado)

Cizí slova ve sportovní publicistice / Foreign words in the sport journalism

LIS, Lukáš January 2008 (has links)
This diploma thesis {\clqq}Foreign words in the sports publicism`` consists of a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part deals with characteristics of publicistic diction in the particular sports publicism. Then it discusses the process of taking-over foreign words into the Czech lexicon and it also presents the sources used. The practical part stems from the lingual analysis of spoken and written sports publicism. It gives examples of commonly used foreign words in Czech sports publicism, compares a periodical dating before the Second World War with a contemporary professional magazine and shows professionals´ opinions of taking-over foreign words into sports publicism.

De la sémantique textuelle en arabe : cohésion discursive et sens lexical / Of textual semantics in Arabic : Discursive cohesion and lexical meaning

Ben Achour, Riadh 17 March 2012 (has links)
This work falls within the general framework of developing a working methodology for processing lexical meaning within a text. It seeks to apply François Rastier’s theory of interpretive semantics to Arabic texts and utterances. The thesis starts with a survey of the state of the text in both traditional Arabic thinking and modern linguistics. Such a survey reveals the key factors that have brought the textual level to the fore, in modern linguistics on the one hand, and Arabic traditional grammar, rhetoric and exegetics on the other hand. This study seeks to apply Rastier’s notion of interpretive semantics to texts and examples in Arabic. The overall objective of this close textual approach is to highlight the fundamental role of semantic analysis, semantic isotopy, context and the current social practices in assigning lexical meaning. The thesis attempts also to show the shortcomings of textual models offered by two semantic approaches, namely the formal (truth-conditional) and the cognitive approaches; in order to highlight the pertinence of Rastier’s model within a structural semantic approach to Arabic texts.

Estudo semântico-lexical do códice oitocentista Memoria sobre o Plano de Guerra Offensiva e Deffensiva da Capitania de Matto Grosso / A Lexical-semantic study on the Eight-Hundredth Codex \"Memoria sobre o plano de Guerra offensive e deffensiva da Capitania de Matto Grosso\" (Memoir on the Offensive and Defensive War Plan of Matto Grosso Captainship)

Milena Borges de Moraes 04 March 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to contribute for a reflection on the history of Brazilian Portuguese language formation by proposing a study on the lexicon in the municipality of Cáceres, State of Mato Grosso, based on a discussion on the maintenance, the tendency to maintain, the disuse, the tendency to disuse and the semantic neologism of lexical units extracted from an eighthundredth manuscript. The specific goals of the study are the following: (i) understand the social history of the Mato Grosso Captainship and the municipality of Cáceres from the information available in the manuscript Memoria, and from aspects involving the conditions of production of the document and the authors biography; (ii) survey the lexicon of the manuscript, taking nouns and adjectives as the basis in the selection of lexical units to be tested in loco and investigate the meaning of lexical units registered in the document, thus characterizing the lexicon of the eight-hundredth period; (iii) carry out a lexicographical comparison including general dictionaries from the 18th to 21th centuries; (iv) test and identify, from the oral corpus built through the field work in the urban region of Cáceres, the degree of maintenance, the tendency to maintain, the disuse, the tendency to disuse and the semantic neologism regarding the lexical units and their respective meanings recorded in the manuscript. FFIn In order to achieve these goals, we take the eight-hundredth manuscript Memoria sobre o plano de Guerra offensive e deffensiva da Capitania de Matto Grosso [Memoir on the Offensive and Defensive War Plan of Matto Grosso Captainship] as a written language corpus for analysis and from the lexical units extracted and selected from this work we carried out field work to collect an oral language corpus. Before collecting this material, the courses Dialectology and Geolinguistics were used as theoretical and methodological basis for the selection of the site (municipality of Cáceres, State of Mato Grosso) and the informants (a total of sixteen). We then prepared a semantic-lexical questionnaire essentially considering the proposal presented by the National Project Committee (ALiB, 2001) and carried out the field research and the transcription of the interviews. Lexicographical and lexicological studies were used in the analysis of the lexical-semantic nature of the corpora. Building on the results of the study, we found out that the linguistic reality of the Cáceres informant showed units already comprised in the eight-hundredth lexicon of written Portuguese language in Brazil, that is, there is a semantic-lexical memory remaining in the lexical system, probably due to the sociocultural conditions of the municipality of Cáceres, State of Mato Grosso, where, for almost two hundred years, most of the population lived in the rural area. Nonetheless, a certain balance between the maintenance of the eight-hundredth lexicon was conceived without leaving aside innovation and the polysemic mechanism constituting the lexicon.

With second language acquisition as a focus

Svensson, Peter January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study, in the research field of Swedish as a second language, is to investigate whether a connection between form and meaning is established in the pupils’ receptive vocabulary when they play the video game Sweet City in pairs. Two subsidiary purposes are to see whether the use of language scaffolding in the video game affects an vocabulary acquisition and how the situation around the vocabulary tests worked out. The vocabulary change was measured through a pre-test and an instant after-test, hence the focus on the connection between form and meaning. The method was based on Schmitts’ (2010) principles of testing vocabulary change. Because the group was small, with only nine participants, a more qualitative approach was necessary and a discrepancy framework was developed and used to rule out participants’ guessing of target words. The findings show that seven of nine participants had an increase of two to four new words in the connection between form and meaning. Further, the results hint that a use of the video game’s language scaffolding gives a positive effect if used extensively. The discrepancy framework further showed that some participants had guessed extensively in the vocabulary tests, which could have been an effect of a long day of material collection and a desire to get a higher test result.

Maiolini, Elena 20 February 2015 (has links)
By accusing the theatre of teaching the dangerous «language of passions», Pierre Nicole gave ajudgment of which Manzoni would have thought for a long time. The subject of literary moralityoffers an interesting view of Manzoni’s relationship – dynamic and largely unexplored – with thebeloved authors of the French 17th century moral philosophy. Being in strong syntony with them inethical and religious issues, as well as in questions of method and language, Manzoni carried out apassionate analysis on the role of literature, in a direct dialogue with censors, who, according to him, hadn’t received a convincing answer to that point of time. This study shows that Manzoni’s response, outlined in an unfinished speech, proposed a concrete way of representing passions, not as futile andtoxic divertissement, but with a noble cognitive function. We attempt to show that Manzoni’slanguage owes much to the moralists themselves, «deep and keen observers of the human heart»,whose sermons, stored on the shelves of Manzoni’s library, contain various signs of reading.Concieved as a philological and documentary analysis of these texts, the thesis is structured in twoparts. The first one consist of a chapter that deals with the 17th-19th centuries positions on literarymorality, and other three chapters which are dedicated to Manzoni’s vocabulary of pride, love-passionand anger. This analysis takes into account the 17th century moral treaties, the tragedies of Corneille,Racine and Shakespeare, all commented by Manzoni, and Manzoni’s playwright and novelist’sproduction. The second part consists of an essay dealing with a Manzonian lexicon of the words ofthe moral life.
