McCarthyism: an Analysis of the Leadership and Rhetorical Strategies of Agitation and ControlPalmer, Deborah K. 12 1900 (has links)
This study analyzes the leadership qualities of Joseph McCarthy and the rhetorical qualities of agitative and control forces in a specific social movement. The methods used are founded upon various theories outlined by sociologists, historians, and rhetoricians. This investigation is organized around the climate of the times, McCarthy's leadership development, agitative strategies, control group responses, and support and opposition groups.
It was found that the movement's success was probably due to McCarthy's position of attack and offense and to the control group's failure to neither strongly confront McCarthy nor to maintain its preparedness and superiority. It is theorized that had the control group engaged earlier in strategies other than adjustment and avoidance, the movement might have been halted sooner.

The importance of effective school leadership : A study performed in senior secondary schools in the Southern Region of Botswana / Opaletswe BaipolediBaipoledi, Opaletswe January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the importance of effective school leadership. The study was conducted in senior secondary schools in the southern region of Botswana. The southern region comprises of the south and south central regions which has twelve (12) senior secondary schools, out of which seven (07) schools were randomly sampled for the study. Both interviews and questionnaires were used as research tools. One hundred and eighty nine (189) questionnaires were distributed and only one hundred and four (104) were completed and returned. Eight interviews were conducted among school leaders. Results from the questionnaires were analyzed using frequencies, percentages and tables. Results from the interview were analyzed within a framework that was structured along the lines of the research questions. The study reveals that most of the teachers have a teaching qualification (PGDE), have adequate teaching experience, and are generally young (30-35 years). In terms of position of responsibility, most of them are clustered around senior teacher II (42.3%) and teacher/educator (36.5%). The study also reveals that schools performance is hampered largely by indiscipline and laziness towards schoolwork by both stakeholders. The school leaders must act as catalysts in creating a learning environment and be actively involved in implementing improvement strategies that help both students and teachers to enhance their learning and achievement (cf. 2. 16. 2). / Thesis (M.Ed)--North-West University, Mafikeng Campus, 2007

Many research reports mention the fact that a huge number of all system development projects never reach a successful ending; with other words never fulfil formulated goals. By identifying and forming success factors (and in some aspect risk factors) that the project manager in practice can use, this study may be seen as a step in the direction towards minimising the high number of failed system development projects. The purpose of this research report is to investigate how a system development project, where the development process is based on a specific development or process model (in this case the Waterfall model), can and should be driven. I aim to clarify what is demanded of a project leader for the specific development process and give an account for which eventual leadership qualities that can be well suited for given situation in relation to the need for technical competence. Among other things the project manager should inspire confidence, drive, be a decision maker, engage and own some form of basic knowledge in the field of system development. After completed investigation and analysis the given hypothesis is finally verified; leadership qualities are of more importance than technical competence for the project manager in a system development project where the development process is based on the Waterfall model.

This study aims to find out which style of leadership graduating students from the four- year Nautical Science Programme in Kalmar believe that a good ship officer should possess, and examine how it corresponds to the style of leadership a shipping company seeks from its officers. When the interviews were completed, the interview results were analyzed and compared with the theories of leadership. The results showed that the majority of the students agree to that a good ship officer should have an open leadership where you treat your employees equally and can receive criticism. Simultaneously, it is important to be able to show who is in charge of decision-making. The shipping companies describe that the leadership they seek from their officers must be a distinctly but adaptable leadership, with different types of leadership at different times.

Leadership in times of terrorism threat : An Analysis of George W. Bush’s and Barack Obama’s leadership qualities concerning counterterrorismStier, Luisa January 2020 (has links)
While the US-presidency comprises the most powerful office of leadership in the world and has also been investigated at various angles in personal, biographical approaches as well as comparative studies, this research paper specifically lays focus and compares the two presidencies of President Bush and President Obama in regard of their leadership qualities and counter-terrorism strategies. Because counterterrorism seems to be a good example of how presidents perform crises-management and because the subject by itself is critical in the perspective of human rights and security concerns, the research paper has chosen to focus on President Bush and President Obama who are known to have chosen different routes and strategies in countering terrorism. However, when comparing the two presidents’ leadership qualities regarding their counter-terrorism strategies, this paper concludes that on this matter the strategies of the two presidents were not quite so different as expected and a possible path of continuity runs through this realm of US-foreign affairs and presidents’ leadership decisions.

Framgångsrikt ledarskap inom IT-branschen. / Successful leadership in the IT industryVejdemo, Rebecca January 2017 (has links)
Purpose The purpose is to get a deeper understanding of what characterizes a skilled leader. Furthermore, the study aims at analyzing how leadership qualities, cultures and leadership styles contribute to successful leadership Method Based on a qualitative survey, I have investigated what constitutes a successful leader in the IT industry. I have conducted six in-depth interviews with senior executives (CEO) in companies in the IT industry. The outcome of these interviews is reported and merged in chapter 4, empirical and theoretical analysis. The result of my survey is finally reported in the section conclusion. Conclusion Trends and patterns that have been identified are that communication is becoming more and more central in organizations. I have come to the conclusion that a successful leader in the IT industry should be responsive, results and targeted, have empathy and a good human vision, and be able to adapt its leadership style based on siuation. I have made it clear that corporate cultures differ in different countries, and both leaders and organizations need to think multicultural and multiethnic today to be successful.

Kvinnors och mäns effektiva ledarskap i fastighetsmäklarbranschen : En kvalitativ studie utifrån medarbetarnas uppfattningarMetto, Julie Izabell, Siala, Ali January 2022 (has links)
Title: Women's and men's effective leadership in the real estate industry: a qualitative study based on employees' perceptions. Level: Final assignment for bachelor’s degree in business administration C Authors: Ali Siala and Julie Izabell Metto Supervisor: Emilia Kvarnström Date: 2022-January Aim: The purpose of this qualitative study is to try to understand how employees perceive women's and men's effective leadership in the real estate industry. Method: The study has a qualitative construction with an abductive research approach and consists of eight semi-structured interviews that have been conducted with employees from the real estate industry. Results and conclusion: The study concludes that employees perceive female leaders to be more effective leaders than men in the real estate industry. This is because their leadership qualities are generally better suited to what real estate agents need, such as confirmation and courtship. In addition, the results show what is perceived to be effective leadership in the real estate industry, a task-oriented leadership with a focus on engaging and supporting employees. Contribution of the thesis: The study contributes with increased knowledge of employees' perceptions of women's and men's effective leadership in the real estate industry. It also contributes with knowledge of which qualities are perceived to be associated with effective leadership within it. Suggestions for further research: As a suggestion, it would have been possible to carry out a similar study through a survey to obtain a more population-representative answer. Another suggestion is to examine the effective leadership in another industry to see if there will be a different outcome. Finally, one can focus on analysing whether the gender of the leader has any further relationship to the gender of the employee to see if it affects the respondents' answers about how effective they are perceived to be. Keywords: Women's leadership, men's leadership, effective leadership, leadership qualities, the real estate industry, employee perspective.

Hidden In Plain Sight: Development And Testing Of A Model To Evaluate Political Leadership TacticsCitron, Albert 01 January 2013 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the kinds of verbal and nonverbal signals elites manifest to show leadership qualities. Launching from Max Weber’s conceptual framework of charisma as a power term and Harold Lasswell’s study of propaganda, this study takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying political leadership with elements of communication methodology and an ontological basis in evolutionary psychology. The study’s goal is to offer a framework for defining and evaluating the diverse signal patterns employed by political elites in three real-life situations. These are the Malta Summit, the 1992 Virginia Presidential Debate, and the 2012 South Carolina Republican Presidential Primary. The cases were chosen because they display a diverse set of signal variations during different types of interactions. The three case studies are evaluated by measuring frequency and patterns of occurrence of the five different interaction constructs (indicator of interest, indicator of disinterest, demonstration of high value, demonstration of low value, and compliance testing) to explain different interaction patterns. A simple frequency distribution of the different signals during a given interaction is used to display the empirical findings and to compare patterns across the case studies. This study reveals that the presence of DLV (demonstration of low value) signals weaken an elite’s position in relation to other elites and the public while the presence of DHV (demonstration of high value) signals strengthen an elite’s position. It is largely the presence, absence, and frequency of these two signals that determines who conveys leadership qualities effectively regardless of leadership style. Studying the signaling patterns of political elites would allow scholars to understand better the kinds of signal patterns and signal frequencies that are used in different types of leadership styles and norm ranges for signals including for political elites belonging to different cultures and subcultures
