Optimal portfolio design to manage oyster resources

Nyanzu, Frederick 09 August 2019 (has links)
The State of Mississippi wants to manage its oyster resource to increase production, quality, ecological, and economic benefits. In this study, we employ modern portfolio theory (MPT) to test if there are potential gains to hold multiple oyster resources for multiple benefits to aid the state's effort in achieving its goal. Using a Delphi approach, we elicit complete sets of data on ecosystem services (on oxygen, nutrients, sedimentation, and salinity) across multiple oyster resources (traditional plantings, off-bottom farms, and restored reefs). A benefit transfer method is used later to assigned money-metric value to each service estimate. The multiple service values are then aggregated into net service value. We compute the means, standard deviations, and correlations of benefits across all resources using the net service values, and generate efficient frontiers from that information. Results indicate that Mississippi could benefit from holding multiple oyster resources while focusing more on off-bottom oyster farms.

However, new software products available on the market fail because most of these micro and small enterprises are more focused on product quality rather than the processes used in its development. Despite these organizations realize the importance of improving their processes and their working techniques, lack resources and knowledge so that this practice is applied. In recent decades, increasing demand and complexity of software products made that micro and small software development enterprises worry and invest more in quality assurance to provide continuous improvement of the techniques, the criteria, the methods and the tools used in the construction of software products. Through some national initiatives maturity models and international standards such as the Freetest Method, the MPT.BR and the ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-2 can satisfy the needs and expectations of users of these products. However, the implementation and institutionalization of structured testing process maturity in these models and this standard are costly and complex for micro and small software development enterprises. This work developed a maturity model considering the limitations of micro and small software development enterprises, and an approach to implement the test procedures defined in this model. Multivariate Financial Time Series and Volatility Models with Applications to Tactical Asset Allocation / Multivariata finansiella tidsserier och volatilitetsmodeller med tillämpningar för taktisk tillgångsallokering

Andersson, Markus January 2015 (has links)
The financial markets have a complex structure and the modelling techniques have recently been more and more complicated. So for a portfolio manager it is very important to find better and more sophisticated modelling techniques especially after the 2007-2008 banking crisis. The idea in this thesis is to find the connection between the components in macroeconomic environment and portfolios consisting of assets from OMX Stockholm 30 and use these relationships to perform Tactical Asset Allocation (TAA). The more specific aim of the project is to prove that dynamic modelling techniques outperform static models in portfolio theory.

Decreasing in time of preventive maintenance of a transportation fleet in a large-scale mine: a discussion based on total productive maintenance.

Barroso, Rafael 07 December 2018 (has links)
As it is directly under global economic factors, the mining industry tends to develop to seek leaner production processes, combining lower operational costs to better productive rates. In this context, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the general behavior of the time spend in preventive maintenance of a truck fleet from a large-scale mining project, being the analysis performed in a time window based on an economic period of local minimum in copper prices. From the observed behavior a discussion is made under the assumptions of the management methodology named Total Productive Maintenance in order to discuss the possible main risks and/or consequences that can be faced by the project and how these decisions qualitatively indicate the degree of maturity between production and maintenance in a mining project. In the end, it can be concluded that an intense work is still needed to translate the TPM premises into the mineral industry, being necessary to seek ways to adapt processes and metrics that are more suited to the extractive industry environment (which is very different from the manufacturing industry, where the program started). In addition, it is clear that the application of TPM is possible and welcome in mining since there are several academic studies in the area - in other words, the most challenging point in question is probably that an endogenous TPM program is developed within a mineral project.

Lussier-Price, Mathieu 04 1900 (has links)
Post-translational modification with the « Small Ubiquitin-Like MOdifyer (SUMO) » is a major regulatory process (commonly referred to as SUMOylation) that regulates hundreds of proteins associated with a diverse array of biological activities including several nuclear functions such as DNA repair, replication and transcription. SUMOylation of a protein can impact its function in many ways most often by providing an additional binding surface for forming protein-protein interactions with regulatory factors through short hydrophobic regions on their binding partners known as « SUMO interacting motif (SIM) ». Although SUMO-SIM interactions are well documented, there are nevertheless outstanding questions that still need to be addressed regarding their controlling mechanisms. This thesis reports functional and structural studies on the regulatory mechanisms that govern SUMO-SIM interactions. More precisely, we studied how acetylation and the amino-terminal tail of SUMO proteins affects the interaction of SUMO with model SIMs from three proteins: the « promyelocytic leukemia (PML) » tumor suppressor, the transcriptional corepressor « Death Domain Associated Protein 6 (Daxx) » and the SUMO E3 ligase « Protein Inhibitor of Activated STAT (PIAS) ». The first study reports the role that acetylation of SUMO1 plays on its binding to the SIMs of PML and Daxx. Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) experiments demonstrated that acetylation of SUMO1 at conserved residues (K39 and K46) dramatically reduces the binding to the SIMs of PML and Daxx. In contrast, SUMO1 acetylation at K37 dramatically reduced binding to the SIM of Daxx but only had minimal impact on binding to the SIM of PML. Crystal structures of the SUMO1 acetylated variants bound to the two SIMs support the ITC titrations and suggest that there is plasticity in SUMO-SIM interactions. The plasticity observed in the structures of these complexes would provide a robust mechanism for regulating SUMO-SIM interactions using a combination of signalling mechanisms that control post-translational modifications. In the second study, we identified and characterized a novel SIM at the C-terminal extremity of three of the four known variants of the PIAS-family proteins (PIAS1-2-3). We demonstrated that this SIM binds to SUMO1 and structurally show that phosphorylation of the SIM or acetylation at select lysine residues of SUMO1 alters this interaction. In addition, we determined that it plays an important role in the formation of ternary complex made of SUMO1, PIAS1 and the « UBiquitin Conjugating enzyme E2I (UBC9) » in human cells. Together, these results provide an atomic description of the interaction between the C-terminal SIM of PIAS proteins and SUMO1 as well as important insight into how posttranslational modifications selectively regulate the specificity of the SIMs found in PIAS1-2-3. Finally, our third study explores the intrinsically disordered N-terminal tail of SUMO paralogs and their ability to regulate SUMO-SIM interactions. We demonstrate that the N-terminal region of SUMO1, but not SUMO2, has an auto-inhibitory effect on the binding to SIMs and that this effect is dependent on the presence of acidic or phosphorylated residues that within the SIM. In addition, we also determined that this inhibition does not affect the interaction of SUMO1 with its E2 conjugating enzyme UBC9. Using titration calorimetry and crystallographic screening, we identified zinc as a negative regulator of this auto-inhibitory effect. The crystallographic structure of the complex between SUMO1 and the SIM of PML shows that zinc stabilises the formation of interactions with the negatively charged residues within the SIM and the N-terminal tail of SUMO1. Interestingly, zinc also appears to stabilize the formation of an α-helix within the N-terminal tail of SUMO1 which is normally intrinsically disordered. In summary, this thesis describes the underlying atomic regulatory mechanisms of SUMO-SIM interactions by acetylation, reveals a novel SIM within the PIAS SUMO E3 ligase family and describes an unprecedented role of the N-terminal region of SUMO1 and provides important insight on how this region can define SUMO paralog specificity.

Improving strategic decisions for real estate investors : Perspectives on allocation and management

Katzler, Sigrid January 2017 (has links)
Real estate is an attractive asset class in the mixed-asset portfolio due to favorable risk return characteristics and low correlations with other asset classes like stock and bonds. Unlike financial assets, real estate is a physical asset where large lot sizes/indivisibility, heterogeneity, low liquidity and high transaction costs make applying financial models like modern portfolio theory (MPT) challenging. Optimal allocations to real estate found in literature are generally lower than actual allocations by investors and portfolio managers indicating there are aspects of the application of MPT to real estate that are not fully understood. Since management of real estate is costly and requires expert skills, the question on whether to outsource property management functions is of paramount interest for the real estate industry. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to the literature on strategic decisions for real estate investors on allocation and management, Apart from reviewing literature relevant for strategic decisions at different levels and using a top-down approach to illustrate how selected allocation and management decisions are connected, four separate empirical studies are made to investigate the nature of selected strategic decisions for real estate investors. /
QC 20170515
