Apocalyptic movements in contemporary politics: Christian Zionism and Jewish Religious Zionism.

Aldrovandi, Carlo January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the ‘theo-political’ core of US Christian Zionism and Jewish Religious Zionism. The political militancy characterizing two Millenarian/Messianic movements such as Christian Zionism and Jewish Religious Zionism constitutes a still under-researched and under-theorized aspect that, at present, is paramount to address for its immediate and long terms implications in the highly sensitive and volatile Israeli-Palestinian issue, in the US and Israeli domestic domain, and in the wider international community. Although processes of the ‘sacralisation of politics’ and ‘politicisation of religions’ have already manifested themselves in countless forms over past centuries, Christian Zionism and Jewish Religious Zionism are unprecedented phenomena given their unique hybridized nature, political prominence and outreach, mobilizing appeal amongst believers, organizationalcommunicational skills and degree of institutionalization. / Consortium for Peace Studies at Calgary University

Les Etats-Unis et la Fédération de Russie depuis la fin de la guerre froide : Entre visées messianiques et réalités géopolitiques / The Relations between the United States and the Russian Federation since the End of the Cold War : in between Messianist Ambitions and Geopolitical Realities

Dupuy, Stéphane 04 October 2013 (has links)
Our research aims at studying the asymmetrical relations between the United States and the Russian Federation since the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. In order to understand how the new bilateral relation has evolved throughout the past twenty-five years, our research analyses the heritage left by many years of ideological rivalry between these two continent-states. Our research also aims at finding out the reasons why the Soviet Union eventually decided to give up the ideological confrontation and what role the United States played in that decision. The United States has become the only remaining hyperpower trying to prevent any other peer competitor on the international scene from emerging and leaving Russia with only a regional power in Eurasia while developing and expanding its own concept of Liberal Democracy. However, throughout the centuries , Russia itself has developed its own hubris as a great power and as a managed democracy as well as some messianism that would not accept any role predefined by the United States. Thus, our research tries to consider the geopolitical as well as ideological components within the new asymmetrical relation between the two countries and to what end(s).

Jacob Rosales / Manoel Barroco Francês: judaism, sebastianism, medicine and science in the intellectual life of a jewish portuguese doctor in the seventeenth century.

This study aims to discuss a Jewish-Portuguese physician, Manoel Bocarro Frances / Jacob Rosales. A figure who has not been much studied, he is not included among the central characters of the Jewish thinking and neither of the medicine or the science of his time. However, he is a figure that gathered in his intellectual life an adherence to the Judaism and a large production and participation in the Sebastian Moviment, being the only known Jewish man who professed his belief in the return of \"The Hidden One\". He shared his intelectual activity with great figures of his time, like Galileu Galilei, the famous physician Zacuto Lusitano and the rabbi Menashe Ben Israel. His writings were known by priest Antonio Vieira, and their influence was felt in Portugal until the XIX century. Bringing a live portrait of this figure, his ideias, his contradicitons, and discussing his role in the intellectual life, being that in the Jewish world of his time, or in the history of the XVII century medicine and scientific thinking, is the goal of this research.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Edson Martins1.pdf: 3088305 bytes, checksum: b90a934fe301b6d9b070dd9e59138385 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-02-20 / This thesis is a sociological analysis of the main motivations that made men and women let go of everything they were doing up to a certain moment and follow a messianic leader known as Inri Cristo, who claims to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. It shows, at first, a brief historical account of the three most important and thoroughly documented Brazilian messianic movements: Canudos, Juazeiro and Contestado, so as to understand the context in which such movements were brought up. This account enables the making of comparisons between these three movements and the Inri Cristo one. The research presents and analyses the appearance of the messiah, the content of his message, and the structure of his church, localized in a popular district of Curitiba. After that, there will be an analysis of the data about his disciples, which was gathered in a field research. This analysis will make it possible to understand who they are, their everyday living within the community, the way they absorb the official discourses and how they pass them on, and, most important, which the main motivations are that made them follow the messianic leader. There is also a comparative analysis between the disciples of Inri Cristo and the followers of the movements mentioned above, so as to establish convergent and divergent aspects between them. Finally, there is a presentation of the innovations brought by this messianic movement and its contributions for the study of Brazilian messianic movements.

L'aliénation ou l'intelligence de l'autre : l'appauvrissement de l'expérience chez Walter Benjamin / Alienation or in understanding with the other : the impoverishment of experience in Walter Benjamin

Bessat, Caroline 10 December 2013 (has links)
Just after the First World War, political, social and cultural disruptions are in the forefront. In this situation, Walter Benjamin is led to a reflection on the impoverishment of experience. Even rationality has reached deadlock. How to seize by words the world that has disappeared and the one that remains ? With Benjamin, one is confronted with a radicality which concedes nothing to despair. Messianism is reenacted against capitalism and fascism, which both firmly set the direction of the future. One is faced with a‛time-fording’ thought, halfway between the time of an upcoming – both political and intellectual – necessary change, and the time of a new regime of thought. Thus, from the impoverishment of experience arises anew the question of theory and practice. The stake is to think, to think politics in another way, which involves theology. The salvation of experience, nevertheless, demands to revive the ever-rekindling spark of transmission, that is : being in understanding with the other.

The Living Messiah of Brooklyn : Dealing with the theological postmortem legacy of the Chabad movement’s last Rebbe and final messianic redeemer.

Sonnenschein, Hannes January 2016 (has links)
The Chassidic Chabad movement is one of Judaism’s most successful and influential groups interms of missionary presence around the world and distributed missionary material online.Chabad’s final Rebbe is still regarded by his followers to be the long-awaited final redeemerand Messiah, despite his clinical death in 1994. The aim of this study is to describe how theChabad-followers, through the movement’s publications, maintain the belief in the Rebbe asthe Jewish Messiah, and the theological interpretive tools utilized in order to ‘survive’ as aunited movement. The study indicates that Chabad is still a united and radical messianicmovement, wherein, internal theological mechanisms interpret the Rebbe as corporally alivebut concealed by illusion, and will soon be revealed or imminently resurrected to complete theredemption of the world. The study also discusses the movement’s extreme right-wingedpolitical stance in regards to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, the movement’s Holocausttheology as means to further understand how the group ‘survived’ the cognitive dissonance thedeath of the Rebbe created and the theological similarities between Chabad and earlyChristianity.

Wang, Wei 11 1900 (has links)
The Qumran scrolls provide us the first-hand sources for the study of development of messianism in Judaism during the Second Temple period. One of the most striking characteristics of Qumran library is the plurality of messianic expectations, as well as the variety of expressions with messianic meaning applied to different figures. Using a literary analysis and a socio-critical approach, especially a typological distinction between restorative and utopian messianism, this dissertation investigates the relationship between Qumranian sectarian messianic texts and 1) biblical and extra-biblical data, 2) the forms through which the various messianic figures are conceptualized, 3) the socio-political context of the period during which these texts were in use. The dissertation presents four major patterns through which the various messianic ideas were formulated in the Qumran-Essene community, whereas the interpretation of the texts focuses on the issues around the restorative/utopian typology. The analyses reveal an aspect of messianic expectations in Ancient Judaism, marked by the belief in a plurality of agents of salvation endowed with messianic attributes, oscillating between the desire for the restoration of religious and political structures of an ideal past Israel, and the utopian hope aspiring to a dramatically transformed world. Although it is difficult to establish an unanimous, consistent and linear development based on the content and the chronology of the messianic texts, this research demonstrates the general tendency of the historical evolution of Qumranian messianic ideas. It is the combination of several dynamics, namely a critical attitude against the Hasmonean priest-kings, a concern for ritual purity and observance of the Law, and an apocalyptic perspective envisioning a catastrophic transformation leading to a renewal world, which generated the messianic fervor of Qumran-Essene community.
