Previous issue date: 2010-04-13 / The present dissertation has an objective to build a Latin-Americanist debate unfolding the ideas of a Brazilian thinker named Manoel Bomfim (1868-1932), specifically with respect to Latin American identity. We intent to glimpse in which measurement the forethoughts of this Brazilian thinker makes of Latin America; if it can be considered a project of identification of the Latin American identity and as such design incorporates the mestizo man as bearer. This present project in Bomfim s work is especially based on the ideas of social parasitism, miscegenation. As an unfoldment of the dissertation, we focused on an analysis of Bomfim s intellectual biography connected with the intellectual discourse of the time. This locates spatially and temporally the Brazilian and foreign interlocutors of Bomfim. In this sense, we identify the streamlines that explicit or implicitly influenced the construction of a distorted conception of Latin America and of the Latin-American and which are refuted in Bomfim s works. Such refutations are the basis for Bomfim s discourse because his narratives are of resistance and his thought is characterized by the defense, as well as attacks the neo-colonization pretensions of both Europe and the United States, regarding Latin America. Finally, the fundamental conceptions that bring Bomfim originality to this discussion were worked; it s specificity and importance, both for the Latin-American identity as for a possible national identity. Herein, in a macro micro relation, Bomfim thinks Latin America from a view point in Brazil. He accentuates the miscegenation, the cultural plasticity and education as the fundaments of his Latin-American identification project.

Butamalón, el gran levantamiento : Las Raíces de un Conflicto / Butamalón: The Great Insurrection : Roots of a conflictBelmar Shagulian, Jasmin January 2009 (has links)

[pt] POTENCIALIDADES DOS USOS DE QUADROS DE MESTIÇAGEM PARA O ENSINO DE HISTÓRIA DA AMÉRICA / [en] POTENTIALITIES OF THE USES OF MESTIZAJE PAITINGS FOR THE TEACHING OF AMERICAN HISTORYPAULO SERGIO MACHADO 14 March 2022 (has links)
[en] The work with the history of colonial America in the classroom imposes the necessity to expand the possibilities of studies and supports for the achievement of the teaching-learning process. The spaces offered in current contexts for exploring different perspectives on the formative processes of Ibero-American societies during the colonial period have been progressively constrained. Whether due to biases in teaching materials or due to the curricular insufficiency itself, the panorama of school studies of these sections in Brazil has not been the most favorable. In this sense, this dissertation explores potentials for didactic mobilization of specific image documentation for the teaching of American history. Based on the reflection on teaching practice in history, we seek to discuss possibilities for working with casta paintings (or mestizaje paintings) and their development through didactic approaches for conceptual performance in teaching colonial American history with 7th grade classes of the first segment of elementary school.

CULTURALLY SITUATED PROGRAMMING PLATFORMS: SEIS8S, A LIVE-CODING LANGUAGE FOR ELECTRONIC LATIN DANCE MUSIC / SEIS8S, A LIVE-CODING LANGUAGE FOR LATIN DANCE MUSICNavarro Del Angel, Luis Fernando January 2023 (has links)
This dissertation speculates on culture, social spheres, and programming to gain insight into how computer platforms can be (re)thought and (re)designed around the consciousness and struggles of Latin American communities. This dissertation uses an interdisciplinary
methodology emphasizing approaches to live-coding performance, platform design and software development, participatory action research, and interpretive and semiotic analysis. The research in this dissertation starts with the argument that computer languages
are influenced by social spheres (e.g., science and arts), economic models (e.g., knowledge economy), communication systems (e.g., natural language), and infrastructures (e.g., software collaboration protocols and institutions). Next, it is discussed how I deployed this argument by ideating and coding a computer language based on specific social spheres (i.e., live coding practice and popular music), communication systems (i.e., Spanish), and infrastructures (i.e., cultural centers and online spaces) of Hispanoamerica. Finally, this computer-music language is compared and contrasted against collective reflections and uses by this dissertation’s author
and members of the general public through a series of conversation circles and live coding performances. This research results in developing Seis8s, a computer-music language inflected by Spanish constructs borrowed from Latin dance music. Seis8s blends Latin American music sensibilities and live coding techno-politics to promote critical reflection. Seis8s emphasizes resistance to asymmetric types of computer-music abstraction by bringing Afro-Latin instruments and rhythms to the center of the technology and the performance. Results of this research also include ten public presentations using Seis8s involving individual and collective
live coding performances and conference presentations. These public presentations showcased Seis8s and promoted reflection toward universal understandings of bodies, culture, politics, and economies of these technological and artistic milieus. This research also gives insight into mestizaje and latinidad as concepts still present in the belief systems and ways of knowing Spanish speakers in Latin America and, consequently, in the software they develop. Mestizaje and latinidad are challenged collectively by positioning the white-mestizo ideology as a shared problem that could be resisted through reflection on the irreducibility of the Latin American identity and its potential to coexist with other identities. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Previous issue date: 2017-12-04 / We develop here an analysis of the relations between some groups of Indians of the Xingu and the production of a documentary series made on these same Indians by the journalist Washington Novaes in 1984 and in 2006, with the titles: Xingu - The Magical Land and Xingu - Earth Endangered , whose films we have as object of study. Our intention is to point out the possible way to break with the construction of preconceived ideas about a supposed "identity purism" in the life of the Indian, which developed in two ways: by the image that was built historically on it, aiming at the maintenance of a pretended Indian identity through the "preservation of a primitive culture" that certainly does not exist anymore, like that which existed in the sixteenth century, and through a discourse that puts it in the condition of acculturated and disappearing, from the absorption of elements of non-Indian culture. If we do not agree with either position, we present a third one, which places it as having developed historically and socially, merging with non-Indian culture through peaceful and violent encounters, but without prejudice to its degradation or of his disappearance as a people. The series of documentaries produced by Washington Novaes brings in a strong criticism to the introduction of non-Indian elements in their culture, and defends about them, as if it were possible, the maintenance of an archaic and primitive cultural life, as the only way to prevent their total "disappearance" as an identity group. In this context, we propose to subvert the ideas of this "identity purism", supporting us in the theoretical formulations related to the field of communication, anthropology and historiography. As a result of this, we have obtained, from the analysis of the texts on Amerindian perspectivism and others, a theoretical support to question the points of view quoted above. We analyze the associations between these groups of Indians in the region with the technologies and tools introduced in the villages, their connections with the feast of Kuarup and with the shamanism, in order to show the possible ways to break with the construction of ideas around the identity conception of the Xingu Indians / Desenvolvemos aqui uma análise das relações entre alguns grupos de índios do Xingu e a produção de uma série documentária realizada sobre esses mesmos índios pelo jornalista Washington Novaes, em 1984 e em 2006, com os títulos: Xingu – A Terra Mágica e Xingu – A Terra Ameaçada, cujos filmes temos como objeto de estudo.

This is a descriptive study of a sector on the Andorran social reality. It could be considered as a "reasonable" starting point to act on the educational field. It takes into account the personal reality of the pupil together with his/her socio-cultural context. The obtained data reveals that the majority of students manifest attitudes according to what society expect from them. In the same way, the results of the survey emphasises on the hypothesis that the attitude of "indifference" stands out as an important component. The results of the crossed analysis show that pupils of feminine gender, those from Portuguese nationality and also those whose parents acquired a basic education, manifest attitudes which are more in accordance with the social integration, the cultural identity or the multicultural society, than the rest of the surveyed pupils.

Cuba and the neobaroque: twentieth-century reformations of Cuban identityCruikshank, Stephen 27 June 2013 (has links)
This thesis project explores the connection between Cuban identity and the twentieth-century Neobaroque. The paper approaches the Neobaroque as a concept that reoriginates or "refracts" culture, implying a relationship between Baroque forms and post-colonial Latin America that creates a transformation of cultural expression. Furthermore, the Neobaroque is seen relating to questions of cultural identity, post-colonialism, transculturation, mestizaje, and Latin American modernity. The Neobaroque's relevancy with Cuba is stipulated in twentieth-century writings of three Cuban authors known as the Cuban triumvirate: José Lezama Lima, Alejo Carpentier, and Severo Sarduy. Similar themes of these writers concerning the Neobaroque's connection with the urban environment of Havana as well as connections to José Martí's writing Nuestra América are highlighted as key components connecting the Neobaroque with Cuban culture. / Graduate / 0336 / 0626 / scruiksh@uvic.ca
