Modality and Method: A Comparison of Russian and English Epistemic Modal Verbs through SFL and its Implications for Second Language Learners.Batluk, Liilia January 2012 (has links)
This study is intended to shed light on similarities and differences in terms of functional structure of the clause when modality is expressed by use of modal operators in Russian and English, in order to arrive at findings which inform, and are applicable to, the process of English language acquisition by the Russian learner. The need for the investigation was prompted by the author’s work experience in the field of English teaching, and the lack of explicit guidance in available textbooks currently used in Russian schools and institutions with regard to the particular issue highlighted. While learning the subject of Systemic Functional Linguistics, I drew parallels between the functional structures in the two languages, the purpose of which is to provide a roadmap which facilitates the learning and teaching of English modality to the Russian learner. The approach of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), focusing on the metafunctions as the correspondence in the sociolinguistic message of the clause, is used as a basis for comparing the functional structures in both languages. The investigation of functional grammar features is carried out in order to spotlight both the similarities and the differences inherent in expressing a degree of probability of an event or statement indicated, not only by the choice of an appropriate modal verb, but also its placement within the clause. The role of the social context in which the text is set is noted as significant for delivering the precise meaning of the message. Hence, the proposition will be pursued through further investigation in the field of modality, and viewed from perspectives of sociolinguistics.

[en] ANOSOGNOSIA, MOOD AND PERSPECTIVE-TAKING IN MILD TO MODERATE ALZHEIMER S DISEASE / [pt] ANOSOGNOSIA, HUMOR E TOMADA DE PERSPECTIVA NA DOENÇA DE ALZHEIMER LEVE A MODERADAELODIE BERTRAND 21 March 2018 (has links)
[en] Lack of awareness about cognitive deficits or illness, also named anosognosia, is a common feature of Alzheimer s disease (AD). However, there is variability in the presentation and severity of anosognosia in patients with AD. Based on the Cognitive Awareness Model (CAM), this thesis aims to explore experimentally two factors which could possibly influence the awareness of cognitive abilities in AD, namely current mood state and the perspective through which the information is presented. The first section of this thesis explores the impact of mood state on awareness of deficits. As it has been suggested in the CAM that emotional biases could influence the access to personal memories, consequently leading to anosognosia, a systematic literature review was conducted to understand better the mood-congruent memory effect in healthy adults (Article 1). Then, we present an experimental study investigating this hypothesis in AD (Article 2). In this study, negative and neutral mood states were experimentally induced using four Success-Failure Manipulation (SFM) tasks, two based on reaction time tasks and the other on memory tasks. The results showed an improvement of awareness of symptoms after negative mood
induction, but only when the task used in the SFM was memory-based. The second section of this work investigates if the perspective through which the information is presented (self vs. other) has an influence on metacognitive abilities of patients with AD. Indeed, a literature review highlighted that studies exploring the impact of perspective taking on metacognition with different neurologic and psychiatric populations showed that patients are able to recognize deficits in others, despite lack of awareness of their own difficulties (Article 3). Then, an experimental study was conducted by asking AD patients and controls to
evaluate their own performance on four different tasks, as well as the performance of a well-known person (caregiver/spouse/friend) (Article 4). Our findings highlight that overall both groups made higher overestimation when evaluating the performance of a well-known person. However, AD patients tended to overestimate more the performance compared to controls but only in the memory experiment. In summary, results of these studies give experimental support to three aspects suggested by the CAM as factors influencing awareness of deficits. First, the findings on the relationship between mood and awareness support the idea of emotional biases in memory as a partial explanation for anosognosia.
Second, the results showing that AD patients appraise the evaluation of selfperformance differently than the evaluation of a well-known person s performance support the inclusion of different memory records for self- and otherinformation in the reformulated version of the CAM. Third, by presenting
differences in results depending on the type of task used in the SFM (reaction time vs. memory), our findings reinforce the concept that awareness is multidimensional, on which is based the modular aspect of the CAM.

Att förstärka sinnelag och sinnesstämning : En korpusstudie av förstärkande förled hos svenska adjektiv / Reinforcing mood adjectives : A corpus study of reinforcing prefixes in Swedish adjectivesCarlberg, Matilda January 2015 (has links)
There is no description in the Swedish grammar regarding how adjectives can be reinforced with prefixes, also known as intensifiers. Research shows that this phenomenon have recieved greater attention in other languages. The purpose of this study was to describe and map the use of prefix reinforcements, and see if any patterns or rules could be found. The quantitative research is based on statistical data collected from informal blog texts in two Swedish corpora. Adjectives on two types of mood, solid and temporary, as well as positive and negative, were investigated. The results showed that some types were more inclined to take reinforcements than others. Temporary adjectives took on more than solid ones, negative more than positive, as well as the short and frequent adjectives where more often reinforced than the longer and uncommon ones

AND TEAM CREATIVITY: EXPERIMENTS ON THE EFFECTS OF LEADERSHIP STYLES AND HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT PRACTICESMOCHI, FRANCESCA 28 March 2018 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is to provide an in-depth understanding of some strategic resources that allow organizational survival and improvement. The thesis is divided into three papers and the fil rouge is the use of experimental design as research methodology. Recognizing creativity as a strategic competence and a measure of individual or team performance, the first paper compares the effect of three leadership styles – transformational, transactional and laissez-faire – on individual creativity, thus showing which leadership behavior is the most suitable for enhancing it. Positive and negative moods are included in the research design as mediators and individual intrinsic motivation is included as moderator. The second paper is an extension of the first one and investigates the same relationships at a team level of analysis. Furthermore, not only leaders are relevant for the organizations, but followers too. Talents are the life-bloods of organizations and their behaviours have to be detected for attracting them, but also for retaining and managing them. The third paper untangles the job seekers’ behaviors in looking for a job and choosing a company rather than another one basing their choice on the screening of social media and social network pages.

Pour une nouvelle approche du "plus-que-parfait" en espagnol contemporain : unicité du signe, motivation, variations / Towards a new approach of the 'pluperfect indicative' in contemporary Spanish : unity of the sign, motivation, variationsBlestel, Elodie 01 December 2012 (has links)
This study focuses on the periphrastic form había- + do/-to/-cho that the grammatical tradition identifies as the ‘pluperfect (past perfect) indicative’ in contemporary Spanish. After reviewing the different approaches to this verbal form, we provide a unique signified for this form that is able to subsume all its discursive manifestations. For this purpose, we adopt the theoretical principles of the ‘Linguistics of the signifier’, which postulates the unity of the linguistic sign – i.e. a signifier corresponds to a single signified, and vice versa – and gives priority to the semiological structure of the signifier. This approach leads us to reexamine había- + do/-to/-cho within the signifying networks of Spanish, and to reconsider the modal structure of the verbal system. Finally, we describe the discursive syntactic behaviour of the Spanish pluperfect, in the development of narrative sequences, but also in certain Latin American diatopic occurrences (contact Spanish / Guarani in particular) since they are ‘borderline case’ among the pluperfect discursive occurrences

Temporal Subordinators and Clauses in Early Modern English : Stability and ChangeRönnerdal, Göran January 2017 (has links)
My work is a corpus-based investigation of the use and development of temporal subordinators and clauses in Early Modern British English (EModE). The focus of the project is on the forms, structure, meanings, and history of these subordinators and clauses. My primary aim is to analyse stability and change in temporal subordinators and clauses across the EModE period; second comes the study of linguistic features, such as aspect, tense, mood and modality, ellipsis and non-finite forms, positions, coordination, and subordination of the temporal clauses. In addition, I examine the progress of these subordinators, and WHEN in particular, across text categories, text types, and the sub-periods. Regarding temporal subordinators, I account for the use of simple, complex, and correlative forms. I also address alternative expressions of temporal subordinators such as the repetition and replacement of temporal subordinators. The influence of negation on the choice of subordinators, and the modification patterns of subordinators are also treated. Primary meanings of anteriority, simultaneity, and posteriority as well as secondary meanings of temporal subordinators are studied. I uncover the evolution of temporal subordinators and trace their various forms, as far back as possible to the Old English and Middle English periods. I also make some comparisons with Present-day English. The investigation is based on the EModE section of the computerized Helsinki Corpus of English Texts and the manual literary Major Authors Corpus which I designed for the purposes of the study. Consequently, my study is carried out within corpus linguistics methodology. All in all, the primary material yielded 3,269 instances of 17 different prototypical temporal subordinators, called sub-types.

Playing Lotteries and Betting on Sporting Events: A Behavioral Economics Perspective / Sázení na loterie a sportovní události z pohledu behaviorální ekonomieMikulka, Jakub January 2012 (has links)
This thesis deals with the relationship between mood and behavior of bettors using a dataset provided by a betting company, Chance a.s., which operates in the Czech Republic. We consider three types of proxies for the mood: weather in regions, sport successes and the results of elections, and we build a fixed effect model to estimate the effect of mood on betting behavior. We provide strong evidence that the weather proxy has a significant effect on daily turnovers of the betting company and there also seems to be an effect of sport optimism. On the contrary, we failed to find any impact of elections. The results show that better mood tend to discourage clients from sports and lottery betting which is consistent with the increase in risk aversion or the depletion of a common self-control resource due to active mood regulation attempts. Additionally, we provide an evidence that the intra-month cycle in turnovers corresponds to liquidity constraint of bettors which disproves the permanent income hypothesis.

Depressive Rumination and the Mood-as-Input HypothesisKissinger, Alicia 01 January 2014 (has links)
The mood-as-input hypothesis was developed to explain perseverative worry. Based on this model, it is predicted that the amount of time individuals persist on tasks is based on their mood, and this hypothesis may explain the tendency for some individuals to engage in prolonged episodes of depressive rumination. However, surprisingly few studies have examined the applicability of the hypothesis to depressive rumination. Based on the mood-as-input hypothesis, it was predicted that persistence at a rumination task would be greatest in a "sad mood" condition paired with an "as many as can" (AMA) stop rule because individuals with depression have a difficult time assessing when to disengage from the rumination process. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three mood conditions (positive, negative, or neutral) through the use of movie clips from the Lion King and one of two stop rules conditions (as many as can or feel like stopping). Participants then completed the Catastrophic Interview Procedure (CIP), in which they were asked to recall a situation or event in their life that is associated with a depressed mood. More steps are indicative of greater rumination. Contrary to previous literature on the topic, there was no significant interaction between mood and stop rules on depressive steps; however the current study was the first to identify rumination as a predictor of variance after controlling for mood and stop rules indicating that the natural tendency to engage in rumination is an additional relevant variable in a basic perseveration task.

Regularity of self‑reported daily dosage of mood stabilizers and antipsychotics in patients with bipolar disorderPilhatsch, Maximilian, Glenn, Tasha, Rasgon, Natalie, Alda, Martin, Sagduyu, Kemal, Grof, Paul, Munoz, Rodrigo, Marsh, Wendy, Monteith, Scott, Severus, Emanuel, Bauer, Rita, Ritter, Philipp, Whybrow, Peter C., Bauer, Michael 07 June 2018 (has links)
Background
Polypharmacy is often prescribed for bipolar disorder, yet medication non-adherence remains a serious problem. This study investigated the regularity in the daily dosage taken of mood stabilizers and second generation antipsychotics.
Methods
Daily self-reported data on medications taken and mood were available from 241 patients with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder who received treatment as usual. Patients who took the same mood stabilizer or second generation antipsychotic for ≥ 100 days were included. Approximate entropy was used to determine serial regularity in daily dosage taken. Generalized estimating equations were used to estimate if demographic or clinical variables were associated with regularity.
Results
There were 422 analysis periods available from the 241 patients. Patients took drugs on 84.4% of days. Considerable irregularity was found, mostly due to single-day omissions and dosage changes. Drug holidays (missing 3 or more consecutive days) were found in 35.8% of the analysis periods. Irregularity was associated with an increasing total number of psychotropic drugs taken (p = 0.009), the pill burden (p = 0.026), and the percent of days depressed (p = 0.049).
Conclusion
Despite low missing percent of days, daily drug dosage may be irregular primarily due to single day omissions and dosage changes. Drug holidays are common. Physicians should expect to see partial adherence in clinical practice, especially with complex drug regimens. Daily dosage irregularity may impact the continuity of drug action, contribute to individual variation in treatment response, and needs further study.

How our senses and mood are affected by an augmented soundscape : A concept driven study of how a user experience could be designed to enhance our engagement with our everyday surroundingsNyström, Elin January 2021 (has links)
Curiosity and a sense of connection with our everyday environment is important for our well-being. However, the combination of not being able to appreciate what is close to us and smartphones stealing our attention just makes a larger gap between us and everyday environments. By engaging people through sound to direct our focus towards our surroundings and away from the smartphone, you can bring your curiosity to life, and in that way get an enhanced connection to the everyday environment. This paper presents a design concept based on a study made with a Concept-Driven Design method. The purpose of the suggested design concept is that the insights and knowledge that is drawn from it can be used to help future research within the field. This paper examines how a user experience of an augmented soundscape could be designed for people to enhance their connection to their surroundings. In an empirical study, participants get to compare how their mood is affected by a natural soundscape compared to an augmented soundscape in an everyday environment. The result shows that all of the participants' mood was affected by the soundscape, however when it comes to enhanced connection to their surroundings only 40% of the participants said it did. A conclusion was made that the mood is affected differently depending on personal preferences and previous experience.
