#Menstruation: Instagram Users Challenging Social StigmaHodge, Samarah 05 March 2019 (has links)
In many societies there is a stigma surrounding menstruation. It is often perpetuated through representations in advertisements as well as lack of open discussions. This thesis investigates ways that people are presenting menstruation on the social media platform Instagram and concludes that this is a space which allows the normative menstruation discourse to be challenged. Instagram is a widely used app that allows users to interact with others through sharing photos and has the potential to be a space for empowerment and challenging dominant ideologies. Publicly accessible photos were collected from the app using hashtags related to menstruation and menstrual activism, as well as menstrual activist accounts and menstrual product accounts. The results of a qualitative content analysis reveal numerous themes which challenge or reinforce the stigmas: Empowerment, Solidarity, Resistance, Normalizing Periods, Women’s Health, Standard/Normative, Eco-Friendly and Marketing.

Application of continuous radiation modes to the study of offset slab waveguidesLu, Shih-Min 30 August 2011 (has links)
In this thesis, we study the scattering problem of a vertically offset dielectric slab waveguide, using continuous radiation modes. The calculation of radiation modes of an arbitrarily layered waveguide has been thoroughly investigated in the literature. Most approaches were based on launching two incident waves: one from above and one from below, resulting in two transmitted waves and two reflected waves. Radiation modes were obtained by algebraic adjustments of each incident wave¡¦s amplitude and phase. These radiation modes formed standing waves in both the substrates and superstrates. This implies that walls are located an infinite distance far from the first and the last interfaces. In addition to physical conflicts of simultaneous existence of the incident wave and the walls, the derivation details are complicated and non-intuitive. In our thesis, with a given propagation constant for an arbitrarily layered dielectric waveguide, we propose an intuitive method to obtain two independent radiation mode solutions. We also construct a specific procedure to orthogonalize and normalize these two radiation modes.
The second part of this thesis is focused on applying these radiation modes into a customized coupled transverse mode integral equation formulation (CTMIE), to the study of vertically offset slab waveguides. CTMIE requires two artificial boundaries placed in the substrate and superstrate. We choose to compute discretized radiation modes with the periodic boundary conditions. Under these circumstances, modes correspond to different spatial frequencies and thereby do not inter-couple. This means the matrix of the overlap integral between these two groups of modes (slightly vertically shifted) are block-diagonally dominated. The off-diagonal elements are two orders of magnitude smaller than the diagonal ones. As a result, when the two artificial boundaries are pushed towards infinity in the CTMIE formulation, we may obtain an exact inverse of the Greene¡¦s matrix without relying on numerical inversion.

Analysis and Full-scale Experiment on Energy Consumption of Hotels in TaiwanWang, You-Hsuan 13 June 2003 (has links)
Being located in subtropical area, the weather in Taiwan is constantly hot and humid which imposes huge cooling load on buildings. Especially, the economic booms in Taiwan further boosted power demand, and worsened the power shortage situation.
Dr. H.T. Lin and Dr. K.H. Yang had conducted systematic research since mid-1980s, which constructed a solid ground in this field in Taiwan. Among these results, the ENVLOAD index has become legal binding since 1997 while the PACS index is now under investigation. However, it is in short of analysis and full-scale experimental investigation on energy use of hotels in Taiwan. Therefore, the establishment of the EUI and DUI indexes in Taiwan is the goal of this study.
A simplified calculation method has been established in analyzing the energy use and demand use of hotels in Taiwan, by normalizing experimental data from full-scale tests. The result can be drawn accurately based on a few terms, which are available from daily building operations such as occupancy, and is thus practically straightforward and easy to use.
In addition, the accuracy was validated by experiments performed and data collected through information technology with Internet access in 4 different forms, which yielded successful results.
It is anticipated that the calculation methodology developed in this study on EUI and DUI, and the experimental validation would provide a foundation for the establishment of hotel building energy codes in Taiwan in the future.

The diploma thesis is dividend into four parts. The first part describes basic terms in video technology (luminance, hue, diagrams CIE). The second part includes types of colour spaces RGB, HSV, CMY(K), YUV, YCbCr, YIQ. In the third and fourth part, these theoretical findings are used to propound laboratory observations. The laboratory observation processes the colour rendition of the colours in video technology. In the Matlab software, a user system environment was developed for operations with measured values. The software is capable of recalculating chromaticity coordinates between different colour spaces, to screen colours into diagrams CIE and to show the vectors of colours. The device used for measuring was Chromametr Konica Minolta CS-100A. A manual for the device was created. The laboratory observation was measured and processed in the form of a laboratory protocol.

Denna rapport täcker arbetsprocessen bakom att skapa en spektrumanalysator. Läsaren kommer att få läsa om den valda metoden men även alternativa metoder. Utöver detta kommer även de teoretiska delarna bakom varje moment att undersökas samt jämföras med potentiella alternativa lösningar. Projektet har utförts på uppdrag av KA Automation. Syftet med projektet var att skapa en basplattform för analys av ljudfrekvenser. Målet med detta var att kunna identifiera ljudegenskaper i form av frekvenserna hos exempelvis servomotorer i vattenpumpar. Tanken var att i ett senare utvecklingsskede kunna identifiera om och när nya frekvenser dykt upp i ljudprofilen vilket i sådana fall kan resultera i att motorn är i behov av service. Basplattformen är uppbyggd med hjälp av C# och ljudbehandlingsbiblioteket NAudio. Från resultatet kan slutsatsen dras att detta program kan analysera ljud och visa de olika frekvensernas styrka och därmed är en lämplig basplattform för vidareutveckling. / This report will cover the work process behind creating a spectrum analyzer. The reader will be able to read about the chosen method but also the alternative methods. Apart from this the theoretical parts behind every moment will also be covered and compared to potential alternative solutions. The project has been carried out on behalf of KA Automation. The purpose of the project was to create a base for analyzing sound frequencies. The goal was to be able to identify sound properties in the form of frequencies in servo motors in for example water pumps. The idea was to be able to in a later development stage be able to identify when new frequencies have entered the audio profile which might result in the motor to be in need of service. The base is created with the help of C# and the sound library NAudio. From the result one can conclude that this program can analyze sound and display the magnitude of its frequency components and is therefore a suitable base for future development.

Evaluation of Target Tracking Using Multiple Sensors and Non-Causal AlgorithmsVestin, Albin, Strandberg, Gustav January 2019 (has links)
Today, the main research field for the automotive industry is to find solutions for active safety. In order to perceive the surrounding environment, tracking nearby traffic objects plays an important role. Validation of the tracking performance is often done in staged traffic scenarios, where additional sensors, mounted on the vehicles, are used to obtain their true positions and velocities. The difficulty of evaluating the tracking performance complicates its development. An alternative approach studied in this thesis, is to record sequences and use non-causal algorithms, such as smoothing, instead of filtering to estimate the true target states. With this method, validation data for online, causal, target tracking algorithms can be obtained for all traffic scenarios without the need of extra sensors. We investigate how non-causal algorithms affects the target tracking performance using multiple sensors and dynamic models of different complexity. This is done to evaluate real-time methods against estimates obtained from non-causal filtering. Two different measurement units, a monocular camera and a LIDAR sensor, and two dynamic models are evaluated and compared using both causal and non-causal methods. The system is tested in two single object scenarios where ground truth is available and in three multi object scenarios without ground truth. Results from the two single object scenarios shows that tracking using only a monocular camera performs poorly since it is unable to measure the distance to objects. Here, a complementary LIDAR sensor improves the tracking performance significantly. The dynamic models are shown to have a small impact on the tracking performance, while the non-causal application gives a distinct improvement when tracking objects at large distances. Since the sequence can be reversed, the non-causal estimates are propagated from more certain states when the target is closer to the ego vehicle. For multiple object tracking, we find that correct associations between measurements and tracks are crucial for improving the tracking performance with non-causal algorithms.
