Mendes, Vitor Hugo January 2006 (has links)
This thesis entitled The subject of the education in a postmetaphysical context replaces the problem of the education’s subject following the connecting thread of the linguistic turn. Considering the crisis of the occidental reason and the critics of the subject – which didn’t accept an idea of metaphysical ratio, dissolving the conception of sovereign subject (subjectum), conscious and responsible – takes up again the questions addressed to the modern Illuminism (Aufklärung), placing the collapse of the normative foundations of the education (Bildung) in a postmetaphysical context. In face of this contemporary survey, radically modified and very complex, involving the conversation in the point of view of philosophical-theoretical and pedadogic aspects, The subject of the education in a postmetaphysical context tries to understand – by means of a hermeneutic reading – the education’s subject in his linguistic configuration. Thus are analysed and distinguished, but also compared, the theoretical and methodical approaches of Richard Rorty and Jürgen Habermas, two contemporary authors identified with the linguistic and pragmatic turn. The Neo Pragmatism of Rorty focuses on the subject as a net of religious convictions, and desires. Habermas’ theory of communicative acts rebuilds the subject as speaking and acting. Thus appears the subject as linguistic agent. As contingent and not more as center, the linguistic subject doesn’t constitute an underlying and necessary foundation (hypokeimenon). Without a transcendence, the metaphysical reason, the subject, in a postmethaphysical context, influenced by the linguistic turn, appears modest in its pretensions, communicative in its interactions, intersubjetive in its reasons. Based on such presupposition the possibility of a linguistic subject is an alternative for an other understanding of the education’s subject. Incorporating the requests of the subject at the interactive and intersubjective level, the pedagogic discourse renews the meaning of the educative task in order to reinforce and ensure with dynamism the dialogical character of the formation (Bildung) of the subject. In other words: the education is a realizable interaction in its action and represents a space which makes possible the conversation, the dialogue, the process of socialization and individuation of the linguistic subject. The evolution of the linguistic competence of the subject intersubjectively considered characterizes and orientates the educative action.

Postmetaphysical versus postmodern thinking : a critical appraisal of Habermas's debate with postmodernism

Cloete, Michael 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Philosophy has traditionally been concerned with the question of reason and rationality, as its central focus. From the perspective of the modern metaphysical tradition, this focus has developed around the theme of subjectivity in general, and the assumption of an ahistorical transcendental subject in particular. The idea of reason was thus foundational for the articulation and validation of the notions of truth and freedom. From the perspective of modernity, reason has thus been the condition of the possibility of enlightenment, freedom and moral progress. The debate between Habermas and the representatives of postmodern thinking represents the latest chapter regarding the question of reason, its limits, and its possibilities. What makes this debate particularly challenging is that Habermas, while he defends the idea of reason against its critique by the postmodernists, is actually in agreement with them in their dismissal of the tradition of metaphysical thinking. In view of his defense of the idea of reason, however, Habermas has invariably been accused of defending an outmoded and discredited form of philosophical thinking, while his opponents have generally been hailed as progressive thinkers who have succeeded in effecting a radical break with the conceptual legacy of the metaphysical tradition. In my dissertation I argue that the exact opposite position is the case, namely, that it is Habermas, and not his postmodern opponents, who has effected a radical break with metaphysical thinking. It is his ability to transform the idea of reason, from a transcendental into a postmetaphysical concept, in terms of which the question of reason and rationality, and the related ideas of truth and knowledge, are recast in fallibilistic terms, that, in my view, represents the overcoming of metaphysics. The postmodern turn, on the other hand, in view of its reluctance to consider the question of reason from an alternative model of rationality, finds itself still trapped within a form of transcendental thinking in which it seeks to enquire into the (im)possibility of reason, in the absence of a transcendental subject. In the final analysis, I argue that it is postmetaphysical rather than postmodern thinking, that offers us a practical alternative to the problematic conception of reason, bequeathed by the tradition of metaphysical thinking.

For this, it is taken into account the theoretical framework of Habermas, which guided by the paradigm of intersubjectivity, seeks to reintegrate a modern rationality and linguistically decentered (post-metaphysical), situated in the reality of procedural mode and based on the aspect dialogic performative of the interactions arising from the lived world. The communicative praxis, therefore, enables the enhancement of basic elements for democratic debate aiming the understanding , and then preventing the instrumental character of the unilateral coercions present in teaching procedures and, thus, to ensure learning that aims not only the logic of success, but also the experience of interactions permeated by cognitive, normative and aesthetic practices.

Is the concept of human rights fictitious? Jürgen Habermas' postmetaphysical conception of human rights.

Lysoňková, Michala January 2011 (has links)
Human rights are the pervasive practical and political concept, discussed in various branches: political and legal philosophy, political science or jurisprudence. In the diploma thesis, this concept is discussed in the framework of political philosophy. An author's basic question: Is the concept of human rights plausible (rationally valid) in the postmetaphysical situation as well, and if so, which rights are possible to specify as "human"? This question is asked in view of contemporary (content, spatial and symbolical) expansion of human rights and solved in light of Jürgen Habermas' conception of human rights. Habermas' conception of human rights represents probably the most significant rational attempt to reformulate this concept in the postmetaphysical situation. His foundation is apparently free from the burden of all anthropological presuppositions, connected with a pristine articulation of the rights of man. As we know, these presuppositions also resound in the legal concept of human dignity. After the problem definition, a historical excursus on the field of rational natural law and basic characterization of the postmetaphysical situation, an analysis and evaluation of presuppositions intrinsic to Habermas' "linguistificated" conception of human rights follow - i.e. universal pragmatics,...

Unknown Date (has links)

Three Eras of Citizen-Rights in Canada: An Interpretation of the Relationship Between Citizen-Rights and Executive Power

Tsuji, Kathleen Elizabeth 21 August 2013 (has links)
In Canada’s recent history, the cases of Kanao Inouye, Omar Khadr, and Maher Arar shed light on the relationship between citizen-rights and sovereign power, a problem which this thesis studies through its three-pronged strategy of analysis. First, it takes a postmetaphysical approach to the problem of exceptionality as it has been explored in the works of Jacques Derrida, Gianni Vattimo, and Reiner Schürmann. Their responses to the problem of exceptionality provide a framework that enables this thesis to capture the relationship between citizen-rights and sovereign power in relative detail. Second, it applies Schürmann’s epochal theory in order to offer a historical periodization of citizen-rights in Canada that highlights the effect of sovereign power on citizen-rights. Lastly, in light of its philosophical and theoretical framework, it interprets the Inouye, Khadr, Arar cases in order to account for the effect of Charter rights on sovereign power. / Graduate / 0626 / tsujikt@gmail.com

Critical Investigation of the Sierra Leone Conlfict: A Moral Practical Reconstruction of Crisis and Colonization in the Evolution of Society

Kabba, Munya 06 December 2012 (has links)
This Sierra Leone Conflict arose from the society’s failure to institutionalize the requisite post-conventional organizing principle for collective will formation and for conflict resolution. In this post-traditional society - one artificially constructed from diverse political and cultural groups, without a shared ethos – only mutual (communicative) understanding can resolve differences and ensure solidarity. A lack of mutual understanding overburdens the adaptive capacity of the society, creating crises tendencies. Repression only intensified these tendencies, ensuring their eventual catastrophic explosion, 11 years civil conflict. State hindrances to social (communicative) interaction rendered the society incapable of realizing the requisite post conventional moral learning i.e. the social intelligence or problem-solving equipment required to resolve conflict, decolonize itself, neutralize normative power, shed dogmatic consciousness, change oppressive conventions, and influential customs. Thus, the study promotes civic virtues of post conventional morality (justice, truthfulness, moral rightness) as the key for liberating the society from its crisis-inducing colonial organizing principle. As the basis of sociology, the discipline the remains focused on society-wide problems, the theory of social evolution is adopted here to reconstruct the crisis in Sierra Leone’s constitutional democratic development. The study uses the rational reconstructive method to explicate problematic validity claims of norms, policy decisions, or the social order. The social order was rendered crisis-ridden because the reasons - the axis around which mutual understanding revolve - adduced for it cannot admit of consensus. The emerging social disintegration exemplifies use of deficient logic in social interaction, one below the requisite categorical moral cognitive consciousness. For this research, colonization is not necessarily externally induced, but forms of understanding in the political, legal, social, and educational interactions. The key point of the study is this: today Sierra Leone achieves solidarity, and decolonize from its conventional organizing principle, only if the state, economy, and civil society can find their limit in the socio-cultural domain.
