Almeida, Wilson Filho Ribeiro de 29 February 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The object of this study was the novelette A Christmas Carol, by the English writer Charles Dickens (1812-1870+), specially concerning about its presentation on Dickens Public Readings, spectacles in which, on stage, the author would read pieces of his books. The objective was to observe the transformation process of the novelette to the Public Reading performances. Dickens adapted the text for stage through manuscript notes on a printed edition of the original text. This volume, named by Philip Collins as prompt-copy and by us, in Portuguese, as Roteiro de Leitura (Reading Script), was used as a guide for rehearsals and performances. We had access to the prompt-copy by means of the manuscript facsimile, edited by Philip Collins in the book A Christmas Carol: the Public Reading Version (1971). Firstly published in 1843, the novelette A Christmas Carol was already on the repertoire of the author s first Public Reading, presented, in 1853, with the intention of collecting funds for charity. Five years later, Dickens began to perform professionally, in a career that lasted twelve years. His repertoire counted with sixteen items, being A Christmas Carol one of the most enjoyed by the author and by the public. Such repertoire was carefully adapted for the stage. Dickens not only read the contents, but interpreted each character, seeking to create a variety of voices, gestures and emotions. Altogether, he presented about 470 times, in England, in Ireland, in Scotland, in Paris and in the United States. A Christmas Carol, the longest item in the repertoire, was read in no less than 127 performances, being part of the author s last Reading, in 1870. First, we made a historic contextualization of Dickens Public Readings, seeking to understand which aspects of that context were favorable to their good reception and that made them possible. Then, understanding Paul Zumthor s concept of performance, we analyzed A Christmas Carol s Public Readings, observing them with respect to the textual and performance aspects. In this way, we tried both to perceive the adaptation process of the text, through the analyses of the manuscript, and to form an idea about the scenic aspects of the Public Readings, by registers of spectators who witnessed them.

Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks : Performance Evaluation And Trade-offs

Rao, Shilpa Dinkar January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Wireless sensor networks(WSNs) have a diverse set of applications such as military surveillance, health and environmental monitoring, and home automation. Sensor nodes are equipped with pre-charged batteries, which drain out when the nodes sense, process, and communicate data. Eventually, the nodes of the WSN die and the network dies. Energy harvesting(EH) is a green alternative to solve the limited lifetime problem in WSNs. EH nodes recharge their batteries by harvesting ambient energy such as solar, wind, and radio energy. However, due to the randomness in the EH process and the limited amounts of energy that can be harvested, the EH nodes are often intermittently available. Therefore, even though EH nodes live perpetually, they do not cater to the network continuously. We focus on the energy-efficient design of WSNs that incorporate EH, and investigate the new design trade-offs that arise in exploiting the potentially scarce and random energy arrivals and channel fading encountered by the network. To this end, firstly, we compare the performance of conventional, all-EH, and hybrid WSNs, which consist of both conventional and EH nodes. We then study max function computation, which aims at energy-efficient data aggregation, in EH WSNs. We first argue that the conventional performance criteria used for evaluating WSNs, which are motivated by lifetime, and for evaluating EH networks are at odds with each other and are unsuitable for evaluating hybrid WSNs. We propose two new and insightful performance criteria called the k-outage and n-transmission durations to evaluate and compare different WSNs. These criteria capture the effect of the battery energies of the nodes and the channel fading conditions on the network operations. We prove two computationally-efficient bounds for evaluating these criteria, and show their use in a cost-constrained deployment of a WSN involving EH nodes. Next, we study the estimation of maximum of sensor readings in an all-EH WSN. We analyze the mean absolute error(MAE) in estimating the maximum reading when a random subset of the EH nodes periodically transmit their readings to the fusion node. We determine the optimal transmit power and the number of scheduled nodes that minimize the MAE. We weigh the benefits of the availability of channel information at the nodes against the cost of acquiring it. The results are first developed assuming that the readings are transmitted with infinite resolution. The new trade-offs that arise when quantized readings are instead transmitted are then characterized. Our results hold for any distribution of sensor readings, and for any stationary and ergodic EH process.

Ob cænum : Cultural normalcy, sex and cosmopolitan models in Josep Maria Francès’ masculine sentimental novel

Mori Ribeiro, Thiago 14 December 2015 (has links)
This is a thesis about ignored literary spaces. The mass-consumption sentimental literature of the first third of the 20th century, often poorly classified, concentrates both of these areas. First, the sentimental literature produced for men was often associated with obscenity and pornography, and was subjected to severe moral sentences. Secondly, because the literary validation systems have not yet found a suitable fit for consumption literature. Paradoxically, the best mass literature, written with aesthetic ambitions, is the most frequently ignored. It would be necessary to separate some different aspects to understand why some of these works were considered obscene or pornographic, and why they have been excluded from their literary systems. The comparison reveals that the processes of condemnation of both moral and aesthetic systems are analogous. Finally, our work aims to analyze the presence of this kind of sentimental novel for men in the Catalan literature —which had a literary market and a canonical system quite different from the other European literatures. We can find a good example of this manifestation at the works of Josep Maria Francès, mainly his sentimental novels written during the interwar period, La rossa de mal pèl (1929) and Marasme (1938). This thesis does not aim to provide a deep analysis of Francès’ works, but to offer tools that may allow reading it under a different, richer point of view: the complete catalogue of his newspaper articles, a thorough edition of the unpublished novel Marasme and the definition of the ambits occupied by his sentimental novels and of the genre they represent. / Aquesta tesi tracta d’uns espais literaris ignorats.

Smartphone sensors are sufficient to measure smoothness of car driving / Smartphonesensorer är tillräckliga för att mäta mjukhet i bilkörning

Bränn, Jesper January 2017 (has links)
This study aims to look at whether or not it is sufficient to only use smartphone sensors to judge if someone who is driving a car is driving aggressively or smoothly. To determine this, data were first collected from the accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and GPS sensors in the smartphone as well as values based on these sensors from the iOS operating system. After this the data, together with synthesized data based on the collected data, were used to train an artificial neural network. The results indicate that it is possible to give a binary judgment on aggressive or smooth driving with a 97% accuracy, with little model overfitting. The conclusion of this study is that it is sufficient to only use smartphone sensors to make a judgment on the drive.

Reading the book of Daniel in an African context: the issue of leadership.

Lawman Mourna, Esaie De-S Ia 10 1900 (has links)
This thesis concerns the issues of leadership in the African context, but it derives its emphasis from the stories in Daniel 1–6 in the Old Testament, in order to comment on leadership styles, competencies, skills and the state of leadership in Africa. It is a reading from a specific context, that of someone living in present times in the Republic of Chad. The research focused mainly on the following issues: What can we learn from the stories concerning leadership in Daniel 1–6? Who are the leaders in these chapters? What is the quality of their leadership? In trying to answer these questions, the researcher had to consider the following: How was the book read and interpreted in the past? How is it currently interpreted? Looking at past research, the focus fell on: (1) the pre-critical period, (2) the historical-critical period, and (3) the period in which modern literary studies abound. Following the research history a personal reading and interpretation of the stories in Daniel 1–6 are presented. A narrative analysis is carried out and the plots of the different stories are analysed according to the quinary scheme (the initial situation, the complication, transforming action, the denouement and the final situation). The focus falls on the narrator’s presentation of the main characters and what readers can learn from these stories about leadership. Although there is attention to how scholars in the past and present have interpreted the Book of Daniel, the researcher tries to present a new interpretation by carrying out a contextual reading focusing on leadership. This aspect did not receive much attention in previous research. What is gained by this reading is then applied to the situation in the modern Republic of Chad. First, there is a detailed study of current writing by scholars as well as what they are saying about leadership. Following this, the African and Chadian contexts are considered. The final chapter synthesises all the issues that have been discussed. / Old Testament & Ancient Near Eastern Studies / D.Th. (Old Testament)

Bedömning av texttolkning : En studie i hur lärare bedömer elevers förmåga att tolka budskap i text / Assessment of text interpretation : A study of how teachers assess students' ability to interpret the message of a text.

Helming Gustavsson, Maria January 2017 (has links)
This study, based on interviews with seven teachers of Swedish, investigates how they define the concept of text interpretation and how they assess pupils’ ability to interpret text. The results show that the teachers define text interpretation as an ability to perceive hidden messages in text and an ability that is closely connected to reading comprehension. This description agrees with the way text interpretation is explained in previous research but not with the description in the curriculum. This is a defect, since teachers ought to know what they are supposed to assess, based on the steering documents they are expected to follow in their professional practice. Here, however, the teachers’ assessment skills are shown to be an asset. When teaching literature the teachers say that they normally use dialogue and written assignments in which pupils reason on the basis of the content of the text and their personal experience. The forms of assessment are summative and formal, although it seems difficult to use fixed answer templates for reasoning in contexts like this where it is not clear what can be said to be right or wrong. Summative assessment, however, seems more reliable and credible than formative assessment. A picture thus emerges of the difficulty of assessing text interpretation which is simultaneously multivalent and reliable.

Holmqvist, Sam January 2017 (has links)
Literary descriptions of shifting from and transgressing assigned sex were common in 19th Century Sweden. This thesis forms a contribution to the larger project of writing a history of Swedish trans literature, and develops new interpretations of certain works of fiction by applying a transgender studies perspective. Through trans readings the thesis also examines what potential and possible implications literature might have for trans people beyond the literary realm. Trans readings are able to supplement earlier research by providing a nuanced understanding of the production of trans- and cisgenders. The theoretical perspectives used in the thesis are drawn for the most part from queer and transgender studies. The thesis adopts a conceptual understanding of trans as a movement, and aims to widen the scope of what may be considered relevant to a history of trans literature. The primary objects of analysis are the 1833 autobiography of widely known thief and cross-dresser Lasse-Maja (Lars Molin), C.J.L. Almqvist’s Drottningens juvelsmycke (1834), and Aurora Ljungstedt’s Moderna typer (1874). In closing, two texts from the fin-de-siècle are also closely read; Amanda Kerfstedt’s Reflexer (1901) and Frida Stéenhoff’s “Ett sällsamt öde” (1911). A wide range of other fiction is additionally studied in order to establish a contextual pattern of trans literary traditions. The thesis demonstrates that trans permeates all kinds of fiction, and that the characters analysed construct both trans and cis gender categories. It concludes that trans is done in a variety of ways, and with a variety of meanings in 19th and early 20th century literature. Trans is often depicted as a positive, fruitful and desirable act, through trans characters who are both themselves subjects of erotic desire and who become symbols of liberty and emancipation. Other trans figures however are often counter images of what are considered to be correct sexes, and are depicted as threatening and/or ridiculous. Both these negative and positive representations of trans affirm the gender binary. At the same time, they also break and destabilize that same binary, and the trans characters in the study both can and cannot be interpreted as transgressing cis- and heteronormativity respectively.
