Simple Behavioral Interventions for Typically Functioning Adolescents with Work Refusal in a Classroom SettingFarr, Kerry J 01 July 2019 (has links)
This study was designed to test the effectiveness of 2 different behavioral interventions: a high-probability request sequence and a differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors (DRA) procedure in a classroom setting. The aim of the interventions was to reduce the frequency of task refusal as well as increase the frequency of task compliance in adolescents in a general education setting. The study included 4 adolescents with the same teacher who were reported by their teacher as completing 50% or less of their course work since the beginning of the school year. The teacher implemented the interventions with the participants to test their potential effectiveness. Each student responded differently to the interventions. This was demonstrated using visual analysis of graphs as well as a comparison of descriptive statistics. Some were more compliant when the teacher implemented the high-probability request sequence; others demonstrated greater compliance with the DRA in place. Two participants also demonstrated higher levels of compliance beginning with placement of a camera (and operator) prior to the high-probability request sequence or the DRA implementation. These results indicate that each of these interventions may have the potential to increase compliance with classroom tasks for typically functioning adolescents through the mechanism of increased attention.

Исследование психологических коррелятов отказа от курения на базе кросс-культурной выборки : магистерская диссертация / Study of psychological correlates of smoking behaviour based on cross-cultural samplingБашир, А., Basheer, A. January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine the association between personality characteristics and smoking behaviour in two distinct cultural groups, in SriLanka and Russia. To measure personality traits of the participants, the Big Five Inventory was used and scores for neuroticism, conscientiousness, extraversion, openness to experience, and agreeableness were collected. In addition, the scores for state and trait anxiety were collected using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory and stress was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale. The study hypothesized that current smokers would have higher extraversion, neuroticism, anxiety, and stress scores, and lower scores of conscientiousness and agreeableness, than never smokers in both samples. It also hypothesized that personality characteristics would differ between Russian and Sri Lankan current smokers. Data was collected from Sri Lanka and Russia for a total of 344 participants. To investigate the differences an ANCOVA with age as a covariate was run between current and never smokers in both samples and between SriLankan and Russian current smokers.

In spite of the success of immunization as a public health measure, some parents refuse to vaccinate their children (Diekema, 2005). Over the last couple of decades, outbreaks of vaccine-prevented diseases like whooping cough and measles have been observed in Canada, particularly among the non-vaccinated population (Hinman, 2000). Since the adoption of law 90, nurses in Quebec can provide vaccination without a medical prescription while adhering to the PIQ (Quebec immunization protocol). Nurses in Quebec can, therefore, have a positive impact on immunization uptake in the province (Sauvageau, Boulianne, Clouâtre, Lavoie, & Duval, 2005). The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of the VIP (Vaccination par les Infirmières/Infirmiers- Promotion) teaching program on the practices of community nurses (CSSS) when faced with a parent refusing vaccination. We first described the nursing practices of nurses (N=12) when faced with parents who refused vaccination. We identified and described 13 practices used by nurses when faced with parental refusal. Secondly, we identified modifications in some of the nursing practices after the VIP teaching program.
Nurses must address the fears or questions of parents with pertinent and individualized information. Teaching programs must provide support for nurses to have and maintain an optimal practice.

Responsabilidade especial dos agentes econômicos dominantes / Special responsibility of dominant firmsDrago, Bruno de Luca 02 March 2015 (has links)
Firms enjoying dominant position are able to conduct themselves independently in their commercial activities. Likewise, they hold all due incentives to maintain such position, in detriment of their competitors, suppliers and clients. The present work aims, initially, through a comparative study of the Brazilian, the European Union and the United States\' legal doctrine and jurisprudence, to identify cognitive elements of the abuse of dominance theory, for five different natures of conducts. Subsequently, we identify their elements of connection with the purpose of suggesting a theory applicable to the local legal system, which includes the recognition of competition as an institutional guarantee, so to establish a material equality according to the theory of social function of productive assets. The constant presence of competition on the markets shall be treated as a presumption of social welfare. And finally, based on such supportive elements, we propose a theory of special responsibility for dominant firms that implies in a duty of self-application of the permitted limits for their commercial conduct, and which infringement would entail a relative presumption of harmful effects to the market, pursuant to the proposed parameters.

Previous issue date: 2011-11-18 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This research is dedicated to the study of some sayings that are cumbersome
to forget, a process which is fundamental to their working-through. These are
stories that become repetitive and overbearing to their subject. Because of their
blocking nature, such narratives prevent the creation of alternate interpretations.
Their rigidity impedes the transition of the experienced fact to memory and
hampers its acquisition as such. The goal of this study is to create a venue of
debate on the concept of overlaying stories, keeping such discussion in line with
clinical practice, in other words, with psychoanalytical therapy.
To reach said goal, we trace the delimiting paths of what we perceive as origin,
history, narrative, experience and transmission, with the help of underlying
areas of psychoanalysis. Then, we create a distinction between concealing
stories based on the Freudian concept of screen memories and overlaying
stories.
With reference of work from the literary piece Austerlitz, by W. G. Sebald, as
well as clinical observation based on treatment by the author, we seek further
familiarization with the phenomenon of overlaying stories, relating it with the
former meta-psychological discussion.
It also covers the relevance of the concept of overlaying stories to both analysts
and psychoanalytical clinics and issues of collective overlaying stories. Lastly,
the relations between the concept of overlaying stories and the topic of

The influence of family over treatment adherence in substance dependence: a pilot study on expressed emotionTissot, Cirilo Liberatori 09 August 2006 (has links)
BACKGROUND: The success of treatment for alcohol and other substance dependence in a therapeutic community (TC) depends greatly on the treatment adherence, i.e., the length of stay at the TC. It is well known that subjects who stay on treatment for ate least three months have a better outcome, compared with those who early withdraw. The family emotional environment can be measured through expressed emotion (EE) and has great influence on treatment adherence. METHODS: 31 key-relatives of alcoholics and other substance dependents, who involuntarily began a treatment in a TC, were assessed through the Camberwell Family Interview (CFI) (shorter translated to Portuguese version). The proportion of subjects who remained on treatment in the TC was then measured after six, 12 and 18 months. Evaluated aspects included hostility, overinvolvement and warmth. Hostility was assessed as absent (score = 0) or present (score = 1, 2 or 3). Overinvolvement and warmth were considered as continuous and categorized values (scores 0 to 5). Every possible cutoff points were studied, in order to find new associations and meanings of EE components of this specific population and the length pf stay in a TC. RESULTS: 41.9% of the relatives were considered as having high EE for hostility and 71% for overinvolvement; among those relatives with high EE, 25.8% had presence for both hostility and overinvolvement. Among the 31 patients, five (16.1%) abandoned treatment up to 6 months; 2 patients abandoned treatment between 6th and 12th month (25% treatment abandon in 12 months) and four abandoned the treatment between 12th and 18th month (47.8% treatment abandon at 18 months). There was a significant higher frequency of presence of hostility in the group that abandoned before six months (p = 0.008, Fischer exact test). A significant difference of familiar overinvolvement was found between the group who remained in the treatment up to 18 months and the group that abandoned treatment earlier (p = 0.037, Mann-Whitney test). Families with score = 4 for overinvolvement were more frequent in the group that remained on treatment up to 18 months (p = 0.0012; Fischer exact test). No correlation was found between warmth and length of stay at TC. CONCLUSIONS: High EE has a significant influence over the length of stay of the alcoholic or other substance dependent in a TC. The presence of hostility is more frequent among families of patients who prematurely abandon treatment, while higher score of overinvolvement was more frequent in the families of the group that completed 18 months of treatment in the TC. Further studies with larger population are needed to support those findings.

Individual Bodies, Informed Consent, and Self-Determination: A Rhetorical Analysis of the Vaccine Refusal MovementRichardson, Gretta 01 January 2019 (has links)
This project sought to explore the narratives and rhetorical themes that permeate the anti-vaccination movement. Mass media has portrayed vaccine refusal groups as stupid, as conspiracy theorists, and as radically selfish. However, the data I analyzed from vaccine refusal nonprofits and advocacy groups supports that although these themes may appear to be radical, in reality, each is congruent with already present societal frameworks, particularly neoliberal social discourse and a preoccupation with the individualistic and self-determined health care rather than utilitarian or collective action.

The school is an important actor in creating good future opportunities for children and youths, but despite the school's duty, the school absence is common in the municipal school. The purpose of the study was to illustrate how schools in Halmstad municipality work to promote school attendance and how they work to prevent pupils from ending up in a school refusal problem in elementary school, grade 7-9. The relational perspective, sociocultural perspective and sense of coherence (SOC) has been applied as a theoretical basis to get an understanding of how schools handle the complex situation of absence. The study has used a hermeneutic basis where conclusions have been drawn from an abductive approach. With the qualitative design, empirical data has been collected through four semi-structured interviews. The empirical work has then been analyzed through a qualitative content analysis, which resulted in three main categories that account for how the schools relate to absenteeism and meet pupils with interventions and measures to deal with the problem. The analysis resulted in the categories: Organizational efforts and approaches, Pedagogical efforts and measures for participation and Prerequisites for presence through the social environment. In summary, all schools attempted to maintain preventive and promotional efforts based on an organizational, pedagogical and social level at an early stage, where relationships were seen as the prime condition for promoting presence and preventing absence.
