Rooftop Solar Power Production Potential of Existing Public Housing Buildings in Singapore

Liew, Jamie January 2021 (has links)
The importance of increasing renewable energy production to facilitate a sustainable energy transition has been well-discussed and reinforced worldwide. In land- and resource-scarce and tropical Singapore, solar has been deemed the most feasible renewable energy technology for the country moving forward. Previous studies have focused on assessing the feasibility of various solar technologies. This paper instead analyses the rooftop solar power production potential of existing high-rise residential buildings in Singapore, and thus contributes to reaching the national solar goal using geographic information system geospatial imagery.  For this study, the chosen focus area is the south of Jurong East in Singapore. Results show that solar deployment on all available public high-rise residential building rooftop areas in the focus area will be able to generate a total potential solar peak power and annual solar energy output of 2-megawatt peak and 2.8-gigawatt hour per year respectively. This equates to meeting the energy demand of 679 public residential apartments in the focus area and meeting 0.18% of the national solar goal of reaching 1.5- gigawatt peak by 2025. In an urban context, the use of geospatial analysis has been presented to benefit urban planning especially with regards to the integration of rooftop solar photovoltaic systems.

Är blockmodellen en modell att räkna med? : En intervjustudie om grundlärares erfarenheter av blockmodellen i matematikundervisningen / Is the bar model a model to count on ? : An interview study on primary teachers' experiences of the bar model  in mathematics teaching

Henning, Elsa January 2023 (has links)
The premise for this study has been that swedish upper primary- and lower secondary pupils have been shown to have difficulties in solving textual tasks in mathematics. In an attempt to develop pupils’ abilities in solving these textual tasks, the Singapore model has become increasingly popular. The Singapore model utilizes what is known as the bar model, which is used to visualize the text within these tasks. The purpose of this study is to highlight how five teachers perceive that the bar model can support pupils in developing problem-solving skills in textual tasks, from a socio-cultural perspective. The study also aims to highlight the experiences the teachers have gained from working with the bar model in mathematics teaching for grades 1-6. The study's purpose has been answered through five individual, qualitative and semi-structured interviews, with primary teachers who teach mathematics with the support of the the bar model. The study uses Vygotskij’s sociocultural theory and has been further inspired by a thematic method analysis to present and understand the results. The results show that teachers perceive both advantages and disadvantages in using the bar model in mathematics teaching. The teachers expressed that the bar model is primarily supportive in that the model structures textual tasks and supports pupils and teachers when approaching textual tasks. With the support of the bar model, abstract areas are also visualized and the pupils gain an increased mathematical understanding. The model can also contribute to creating conversational situations in order for pupils to develop in regards to the proximal development zone. In these conversations, pupils are given the opportunity to develop problem-solving, conceptual, reasoning and communicational skills. The results also show that the main challenge is that the model contains many elements that require drawing and writing, which are not suitable for all pupils. The bar model also gives rise to challenges in regard to differentiating the teaching, since the work usually takes place jointly with tasks at a specific degree of difficulty. The conclusion is that the bar model can support pupils in developing problem-solving skills in textual tasks in combination with teacher competence.

Mathematics Education in Estonia and Singapore : A literature study about Singapore and Estonia’s characteristics and factors contributing to successful mathematics education.

Almberg, Alicia, Fridolfsson, Jennifer January 2024 (has links)

A comparative study of investment incentives available to the manufacturing sector in South Africa, Malaysia and Singapore

Wentzel, Martha Susanna Isabella 11 1900 (has links)
This study identifies additional investment incentives, applicable to the manufacturing sector, which the South African government could introduce to encourage investors to choose the South African manufacturing sector as a desired investment destination. A comparison is made between the relevant investment incentives provided to manufacturing companies by Malaysia and Singapore and those provided by South Africa, in order to examine the similarities and differences between these incentives. In the light of these findings, recommendations are made for revised or additional investment incentives in South Africa to promote investment in South African manufacturing companies and reduce some of the barriers that prevent local and foreign investment in South Africa. / Accounting / M. Regulation of fixed-term contracts under the South African Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008

Lombard, Marianne 06 1900 (has links)
In this thesis the position of parties under a fixed-term agreement under section 14 of the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 is analysed critically. The purpose of this thesis is first to establish whether parties to a fixed-term agreement are better protected in terms of section 14 of the CPA when the consumer needs to terminate the contract based on the material failure to perform by the supplier, than under the common law. Second, this thesis explores whether the maximum duration of fixed-term agreements should be limited by statute. Various aspects affecting parties to these agreements, for instance the freedom to contract, pacta servanda sunt, and standard-form agreements, are considered. The South African position is then compared to the position in Singapore under the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act, and to the United Kingdom under the Consumer Rights Act, to gain perspective and objectively evaluate the provisions of section 14 of the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 to establish whether South Africa can benefit from lessons learnt from these jurisdictions. Finally, principle-based amendments to the provisions of the CPA are recommended to improve the position of the consumer under fixed-term agreements to effect best practice solutions and ensure adherence to the aims and purposes of the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 and international guidelines. This thesis is based on the law as at 18 June 2020, found in sources available in South Africa, and Singaporean law available in the database of the National University of Singapore. / Kule thesisi isimo sezinhlangano ezingaphansi kwesivumelwano sesikhathi esinqunyiwe, ngaphansi kwesigaba 14 koMthetho 68 ka 2008, uMthetho weZokuvikelwa koMthengi uhlaziywa ngendlela egxekayo.
