Economic Evaluation of an Advanced Super Critical Oxy-Coal Power Plant with CO2 CaptureBeigzadeh, Ashkan January 2009 (has links)
Today???s carbon constrained world with its increasing demand for cheap energy and a fossil fuel intensive fleet of power producers is making carbon capture and storage (CCS) desirable. Several CCS technologies are under investigation by various research and development groups globally. One of the more promising technologies is oxy-fuel combustion, since it produces a CO2 rich flue gas which requires minor processing to meet storage condition requirements. In this study the economics of an advanced super critical oxy-coal power plant burning lignite, simulated in-house was assessed. A robust and user-friendly financial tool box has been developed with commonly acceptable default parameter settings. Capital, operation and maintenance costs were estimated along with corresponding levelized cost of electricity and CO2 avoidance costs calculated using the detailed financial model developed. A levelized cost of electricity of 131 $/MWhrnet along with a levelized CO2 avoidance cost of 64 $/tonne was estimated for an ASC oxy-coal power plant with CO2 capture. Also a levelized cost of electricity of 83 $/MWhrnet was estimated for an ASC air-fired coal power plant without CO2 capture capabilities as the base plant. The price of electricity was observed to increase from 83 $/MWhrnet to 131 $/MWhrnet translating into a 57% increase. The sensitivity of the overall economics of the process was assessed to several parameters. The overall economics was found sensitive to the choice chemical engineering plant cost index (CEPCI), capacity factor, size of power plant, debt ratio, fuel price, interest rate, and construction duration.

Creating nanopatterned polymer films for use in light-emitting electrochemical cellsMoberg, Thomas January 2018 (has links)
Thermal nanoimprint lithography (T-NIL) is a cheap and fast technique to produce nanopatterns in polymeric materials. It creates these patterns by pressing a stamp down into a polymer film that has been heated above its glass transition temperature. These nanopatterned polymer films can be used in a wide variety of scientific fields, not the least the organic semiconductor industry. There the nanopatterned films have, among else, been used to improve the efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC), which is similar in structure to an OLED, also uses polymer films in their device structure but the light emitting layer also contains an electrolyte. However, it has not been shown if nanopatterns can improve LECs as well or if it is even possible to make an imprint in their polymer films that are mixed with an electrolyte. This thesis shows that T-NIL can be used to imprint nanopatterns in films made of poly(ethylene oxide) and the conjugated polymer Super Yellow. The best nanopatterns were produced by setting the imprint parameters to 85 °C, 10 bar, 1800 s for poly(ethylene oxide) and 115 °C, 20 bar, 1800 s for Super Yellow. Imprints were also performed on polystyrene but no nanopatterns could be produced. This was most likely because the stamp could not handle the high temperature that is required to make a nanopattern in polystyrene. The best imprint parameters of Super Yellow were then used to produce a pattern in a film made of Super Yellow mixed with the salt tetrahexylammonium tetrafluoroborate (THABF4) in order to be able to produce one imprinted and one reference LEC. The imprinted LEC had a luminosity of 139 cd/m2, an improvement of 20% compared to the reference’s 115 cd/m2 when operated under identical conditions. The forward direction and the angular dependent electroluminescence spectrum of the imprinted LEC clearly showed an effect not observed in the reference. These findings show that the polymer films used in a LEC can be imprinted with a nanopattern by using T-NIL. The imprinted films can be used to create functional LECs that show different behavior and a higher luminosity compared to a non-imprinted reference. If these results can be repeated it might be the starting point of a brighter future.

Is the housing market in Sweden overrated? : A Study Of The Hypothetical Yield Of The Residential Real Estate In StockholmPatey, Julia January 2018 (has links)
This paper presents a method to value the residential real estate portfolio of an economy by summarizing the future discounted values of the net operating income. The motivation for this choice of subject is the concern for a house bubble in Sweden due to the double-digit rise in housing prices which the economy has experienced during many consecutive years. However, the method is general and can be applied anywhere where relevant statistics is available. The challenge to use an income approach to residential real estate valuation lies in the fact that there is no obvious net operating income, as the owner and the end user is in many cases the same person. To solve this challenge, we determine the maximum possible net operating income by taking the households’ disposable incomes and subtracting their expenses. This will be a fictional value for the maximum possible net operating income or the imputed income for real estate owners. When this fictional net operating income is compared to the mean prices of properties, a maximum potential yield to capital invested in residential real estate is extracted. The current number for this maximal potential yield on the Stockholm market seem to be 6,4 percent, 2017. The main contribution of this paper to the science of economy is that it presents a way to use classical fundamental valuation methods to evaluate the price level of residential real estate, that, due to lack of tangible net operating income is not as straightforward as the valuation of the commercial real estate market.

Les nanotubes comme nouvelle voie de transfert et de propagation de la protéine Tau pathologique / Nanotubes as a new pathway for the transfer and propagation of pathological Tau proteinTardivel-Safi, Meryem 06 December 2017 (has links)
Over the past few years, the monofunctional concept of Tau protein as a microtubule-associated stabilizing protein has been challenged. These new functions are linked to new localizations: nucleus, membrane, synapse or vesicles. The extracellular localization is particularly interesting as it could play a role in the secretion of Tau and explain the hierarchical evolution of some sporadic tauopathies such as Alzheimer's disease. The Tau pathology can be induced in animals by intracranial injection of pathological species and seems to be transferred from one neuron to another and from one region to another. This phenomenon follows neuroanatomic pathways and suggests an active propagation of the toxic assemblies of Tau proteins. In vitro studies have shown that proteins are able to move from one cell to another and induce the same abnormal conformation of endogenous Tau proteins initiating a self-amplifying cascade. The existence of a hierarchical progression of the Tau pathology combined with its extracellular localization enables to express a new hypothesis. The Tau protein would be a prion-like protein and would behave like that to propagate the pathology. This characteristic implies the existence of cellular active transport mechanisms to transfer pathological proteins. Several studies have shown that the Tau protein, during transport between cells, is released in the extracellular medium or enclosed in extracellular vesicles. Simultaneously with secretion / capture mechanisms, membrane bridges, establishing direct contact between two cells, could be involved in Tau propagation. TNTs are a serious candidate with their already established role in the transfer of pathogens and misfolding proteins involved in various neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, our objective was to study the involvement of these structures in the interneuronal transfer of Tau protein assemblies. In this thesis, we demonstrate that Tau pathological species use TNTs for their interneuronal transfer. We bring evidences, by videomicroscopy, that pathological Tau proteins are transferred from a primary to a secondary neuron and that TNTs could be involved in the spreading of Tau pathology and the disease transmission. Furthermore, the presence of extracellular Tau fibers can activate the formation of TNTs and facilitate their transfer. This result places TNTs in a central place for propagation pathological process and its vicious cycle (transfer of Tau in naive cells by TNTs - seeding - neuronal death – release of Tau in the extracellular environment - increase in the number of TNTs…). We also made a characterization of the TNTs in primary neurons. This result is really important as it is really complex to identify TNTs in neurons. And in this context, we made a surprising discovery: the endogenous Tau protein is physiologically present in TNTs in primary neurons. These results reveal, for the first time, that the Tau protein, like actin, can be considered as a constitutive component of TNTs in neurons. Thus, it could be used as a marker for TNTs. All these results also highlight a new Tau function and reinforce the multifunctional characteristic of this protein. To confirm the importance of this new pathway in the pathological process, further studies should be considered by analyzing if the transfer of pathological Tau species induces a pathological phenotype in the recipient cell and by looking for the cellular mechanisms involved in the transfer of toxic Tau assemblies by TNTs. In vivo studies on integrated systems such as Caenorhabditis elegans would confirm the involvement of these dynamic structures in the pathological process and identify a new therapeutic target.

Violência e tragédia : a arte na margem do dizívelGodoy, Vinícius Oliveira January 2004 (has links)
Art has known during the 20th century some crucial changes that touched the boundaries of what until then was considered as artistic. Starting from the traditional mimesis, it sought for its denial and came back to it through a search more and more radical of the Real at the limit of a rupture with the traditional categories of mimesis/representation. The Real is defined according to Lacan, through its reading by Hal Foster in the art field. Assessing the works of Duane Hanson, Damien Hirst, Gunther von Hagens and Rudolf Schwarzkogler, the present work attempts to investigate this appeal to the real by means of the presentation more and more evident of the body as well as the use of violence against this body. As a opposite to those works which put in scene the real by means of the violence against the body, through the works of Iberê Camargo, a second alternative is provided, construed here as a tragic one. Tragedy arises in this dissertation as a counterpoint to the search of a reality, which through its violent, traumatic excess, is deprived of both its enunciative and representative features (in this particular mode of enunciation, i.e., the creation of metaphors through the artistic representation), which until then has been characterizing the art. As an eminently artistic concept, and within the boundaries of representation, the tragedy presents itself as a metaphor of the former phase of Iberê Camargo’s works, produced from the 80’s on, and having as singularity, the return to the figurative representation.

Accounting for goodwill : a critical evaluationVan der Merwe, Maynard Jacobus 06 1900 (has links)
The principal goal of this research study was to critically evaluate the
current accounting treatment of purchased goodwill in terms of a theoretical framework established, including an evaluation of the true nature of goodwill. The main conclusion of this study is that goodwill is an intangible asset representing various intangible factors contributing to the enterprise's earning capacity and providing returns in excess of a normal return on assets employed for which an acquiring enterprise is willing to pay an amount in excess of the fair value of the identifiable net assets acquired. The cost of purchased goodwill is measured as the difference between the total purchase price and the fair value of the net assets acquired after ensuring that all assets, tangible and intangible, had been properly identified. Purchased goodwill should be amortised over the estimated
period that the enterprise is expected to benefit from the acquisition of
the goodwill. / Financial Accounting / M. Com. (Accounting Science (Applied Accountancy))

Home of the Japanese Heart : Socio-historical Contextualization of Gender Politics, Commodity Animism and Super State-Nationalism of Japanese Modernity through the Indigenous FaithCrown, Juno January 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims to contextualize gender politics, nationalism, and animism as interconnected cultural patterns reflecting 19th century acculturation and post-WWII national reconstruction of Japan. In particular, state-nationalism, hegemonic femininity, commodity animism, uniform fetishsm, and power structure are analyzed through the symbolisms and discourse of the Japanese indigenous faith: Shinto, female practitioners, and followers. There are two points of ideological and linguistic rupture in modern Japan: late-19th century and mid-20th century, in which a large part of this thesis is dedicated to for a holistic contextualization in accordance to historical narrative and events. Materials for this thesis were collected through three separate occasions of field research: winter of 2016 to 2017, summer of 2017, and the spring of 2018 where participant- observation, semi-structured interviews across different platforms, internet ethnography, and archival data analysis were combined. The thesis is separated into three parts: super state- nationalism, gender politics, and commodity animism, and each chapter has its own thematic focus for analysis while the ideological shifts are explained largely based on Ideological State Apparatus and subjectivity. The development of the several thousand year old faith is the preoccupation of this thesis in an attempt to interpret the collective identities, tendencies, and patterns of Japanese modernity.
