Phantoms of a Future Past : A Study of Contemporary Russian Anti-Utopian Novels

Ågren, Mattias January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to study the evolution of the Russian anti-utopian literary genre in the new post-Soviet environment in the wake of the defunct Soviet socialist utopia. The genre has gained a renewed importance during the 2000s, and has been used variously as a means of dealing satirically with the Soviet past, of understanding the present, and of pondering possible courses into the future for the Russian Federation. A guiding question in this study is: What makes us recognize a novel as anti-utopian at a time when the idea of utopia may appear obsolete, when the hegemony of nation states has been challenged for several decades, and when art has been drawn towards the aesthetics of hybridity? The main part of the dissertation is comprised of detailed analyses of three novels: The Slynx (Kys', 2001) by Tatyana Tolstaya; Homo Zapiens/Babylon (Generation ‘P’, 1999) by Viktor Pelevin; and Ice Trilogy (Ledianaia Trilogiia, 2002−2005) by Vladimir Sorokin. The further development of the genre is subsequently discussed on the basis of seven novels published in the past decade. A main argument in the dissertation is that the genre has been modified in ways which can be seen as a response to social and political changes on a global scale. The waning power of the nation state, in particular, and its broken monopoly as the bearer of social projects marks a new context, which is not shared by the classic works of the genre. Analysis of this evolution in post-Soviet anti-utopian novels draws on sociological as well as literary studies. The dissertation shows how the analysed novels use the possibilities of the genre to problematize various forms of societal discourse, and how these discourses work as mutations of utopia. Prominent among these are historical discourses, which reflect the increasing importance of historical narratives in public political debates in the Russian Federation.

Durand, Sylvain 03 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)

A Definition of Brackenridge's "Modern Chivalry"

Alexander, Teresa L. 12 1900 (has links)
Early American writer Hugh Henry Brackenridge conceived and developed a code of modern chivalry in his writings that culminated in the long prose satire Modern Chivalry. He first introduced his code in the poem "The Modern Chevalier," in which a modern knight is shown traveling about the country in an attempt to understand and correct the political absurdities of the people. In Modern Chivalry, this code is developed in the three major themes of rationalism, morality, and moderation and the related concern that man recognize his proper place in society. Satire is Brackenridge's weapon as well as the primary aesthetic virtue of his novel. The metaphor of modern chivalry serves to tie the various elements of the rambling book into a unified whole.

A sátira de Saltykóv-Schedrin em História de uma Cidade / The satire of Saltykov-Schedrin in \"Histoty of a town\"

Sales, Denise Regina de 18 March 2011 (has links)
This work offers a direct translation from Russian into Portuguese of History of a town (1869) written by the Russian author Mikhail Evgrafovitch Saltykov-Schedrin (1826-1889) and analyses its satirical aspects. The author depicts in this novel a fantastic town, where despotic governors rule passive people. Discussing political and social problems of Russia in the 19th century, Saltykov-Schedrin also talks about power relation in every society. With irony and humor, the novel is closely related to the Russian history and in this sense parodies history books. Besides its close relation to history, the novel is a literary masterpiece, combining comic caricatures of Russian sovereigns and ministers and the foolish way in which people react to them. The first part of this work deals with the translation; the second presents some linguistic and stylistic aspects of the novel.

Machado de Assis: uma poética de contrastes - contos do trágico e do riso / Machado de Assis: a poetics of contrasts - short stories of tragic and laughter

Pereira, Mariella Augusta 28 September 2009 (has links)
The investigation of such aspects has been divided in two parts: the first one approaches Machados work as a whole, with no focus on any text in particular; the second part, through the analysis of three short stories, points out the coexistence of those two contrasting characteristics. Since Machado adopts a variety of literary genres, we deem it necessary to analyse both the theater and the menippean satire he has put into use to create such short stories, thus our concern in evaluating them.

This thesis examines one late Qing Chinese translation of Gulliver’s Travels in 1906, namely Haiwai Xuanqulu The study focuses on how the literary devices of satire employed in the original text were rendered into Chinese by the late Qing translators. These devices include a narrative "persona" and the "imaginary voyage" structure. It is a challenging task for the translator to fully render these literary techniques into Chinese in late Qing period when the Western and Chinese literatures were remarkably different. Through detailed text comparison and analysis, we find that, influenced by Chinese literature tradition and late Qing translation practice, the translators made changes in translation in a way that the original satirical effect was not retained in the translated work. The translation also reflects in some degree the clash and dialogue between Western and Chinese literatures. This thesis aims to explore late Qing fiction translation from the perspective of literary transmission. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Thesis (M.Phil.) The theoretical support was based on the emerging concept of cultural complexes and the junguian premises that Art can compensate the collective conscious attitude of a particular society, in a particular moment of history. To the analysis we have picked categories, which have been obtained crossing the categories described in the specific literature of the Los Caprichos with articles available in the data bases of Scholar Google, SciELO, PePSIC e LILACS, narrowing down to four main collective shadow aspects: misogyny, the apathy of the Spanish aristocracy, the ignorance of the people and the power abuse of the clergy, which were subdivided into ten subcategories. To each subcategory, we have chosen one image of the series and analyzed through the symbolic amplification method. The results of the research suggest that, through caricature and satire, Goya has depicted many aspects of the Spanish collective shadow, of the XVIII century / O objetivo da dissertação foi compreender e analisar as gravuras da série Los Caprichos, do pintor e gravador espanhol Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes, levantando como hipótese que elas parecem representar aspectos da sombra coletiva espanhola no século XVIII.

Nature Et Fonction Du Portrait Chez Molière : Le Misanthrope Et Le Tartuffe

Calin, Anemarie 30 April 2010 (has links)
