Nurse Manager Emotional Intelligence as a Predictor to Registered Nurse Job Satisfaction and RN Perceptions of the Practice Environment and the Relationship to Patient, Nursing and Hospital Outcomes

Munro, Jacqueline Cecilia 01 January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine if the level of Nurse Manager (NM) emotional intelligence (EI) predicted registered nurse (RN) job satisfaction and RN perceptions of the practice environment. In addition, relationships to patient, nursing, and hospital outcomes were explored. Participants included RNs (N=659) and NMs (N=38) from 53 nursing units at eight hospitals located in the southeast region of the United States. A cross-sectional, correlational research design was used to test the hypotheses. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients, simple linear and multiple regression statistics were conducted to analyze the data. Level of NM EI had a positive, not significant relationshp to RN job satisfaction and RN perceptions of the practice environment. A direct, positive significant relationship was observed between the variables NM EI and patient satisfaction with nursing care. There was a positive, significant relationship noted between the variables RN job satisfaction and RN perceptions of the practice environment. The indirect relationships between the level of NM EI and patient, nursing and hospital outcomes were not significant. There was a direct significant, positive relationship noted between the variables RN perceptions of the practice environment and patient satisfaction with nursing care. In addition, the interaction between RN job satisfaction and RN hours of care had a positive, significant relationship with unit level pressure ulcer rates. This study indicated that units with higher RN hours of care have increased pressure ulcer rates. In addition, results illustrate a marked increase in pressure ulcer rates on those units with higher levels of job satisfaction. In this study, pressure ulcer rates depended on the level of RN job satisfaction.

Cultural Competence in Health Care: A Client-Based Perspective

Phillips, Karon L. 16 October 2009 (has links)
In response to the presence of health disparities among a diverse population of older adults, creating culturally competent health care services has emerged as a possible method to help reduce and eventually eliminate inequalities in health care. However, little information exists concerning the effectiveness of cultural competence, and even less is known about how culturally competent clients perceive their providers to be. This dissertation examined a number of indicators related to cultural competence, including the predictors of client-provider racial/ethnic concordance, client perceptions of the interpersonal sensitivity of their health care providers, and the overall satisfaction with care reported by older Non-Hispanic White, African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Asian American adults. In order to accomplish these aims, three related studies were conducted, all drawing on data from the Commonwealth Fund 2001 Health Care Quality Survey. The first study focused on the factors that predicted racial/ethnic concordance between clients and their health care providers. The second study examined several factors that can affect the clients’ perception of their providers’ interpersonal sensitivity, including client-provider racial/ethnic concordance. The third and final analysis utilized the outcome variables from the two previous studies, in addition to the client-level variables, to determine which factors predicted satisfaction with care received. The results show that the factors that predicted client-provider racial/ethnic concordance and perceived interpersonal sensitivity varied across the four groups. In addition, perceived interpersonal sensitivity was a significant predictor of satisfaction with care for all four of the groups. The findings from this dissertation contribute to a broader understanding of racial/ethnic differences in client-provider racial/ethnic concordance, perceptions of interpersonal sensitivity, and overall satisfaction with care among older adults from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Vyresnio amžiaus žmonių optimizmo, pasitenkinimo gyvenimu ir socialinio palaikymo bei psichosocialinio prisitaikymo sąsajos / The interface between the elderly ‘s optimism and satisfaction with life and social support and psycho sociological adaptation

Banevičienė, Vilija 15 January 2009 (has links)
Socialinis palaikymas buvo nus-tatomas socialinio palaikymo klausimynu (The medical Outcomes Study social Support Servery; Sherbourne CD and Stewart Al. 1991). Optimizmas matuotas LOT-R klausimynu (Life Oriettion test-Revised). Pasitenkinimas gyvenimu matuotas pasitenkinimo gyvenimu skale (Diener, Satisfac-tion With Life Scale). Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad vyresnio amžiaus žmonių optimizmas priklauso nuo jų šeimyninės padėties, socialinis palaikymas priklauso nuo šeimyninės padėties, išsilavinimo bei... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The increase of the elderly involves all the levels of social reality, it changes not only the life route of any individual, but relationship among people as well. Future time perspective and satisfaction with life across Iife span / Perspectiva temporal futura y satisfacción con la vida a lo largo del ciclo vital

Martínez, Patricia 25 September 2017 (has links)
The present  research studies Satisfaction  with  Life and Future Time Perspective, in itsdifferent dimensions (goals, temporal location of goals and temporal altitudes), from adolescence to elder ages. This study evaluated 570 males and females between 16 and 65 years old, from two different socioeconomic levels in Lima, Peru, through a non experimental, evolutionary transversal design. Tools used in this research were the Motivational Induction Method (MIM) and the Temporal Altitudes Scale (TAS) by Nultin (1985), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) by Pavot & Diener (1993). Results show that there are significan! differences on the construction and temporal Iocation of goals, altitudes towards present, past and future and in the levels of Life Satisfaction due to the variable age. lt was also found that socioeconomic leve! influences these processes more than gender.

The acceptability and effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy in adults with acquired brain injury

Marson, Anna 14 November 2012 (has links)
The evidence base for Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is growing, but there is a lack of experimental validation among populations with acquired brain injuries (ABI). The purpose of this study was to investigate the acceptability and effectiveness of MBCT in fostering psychological recovery among adults with ABI. More specifically, this study was conducted to:(a) extend Finucane and Mercer’s (2006) study by applying MBCT to another population (i.e., adults with ABI); (b) corroborate the Bedard et al. (2008) finding of MBCT’s effectiveness in reducing depression in adults with TBI; (c) establish if empirical findings of the effectiveness of MBCT on depression and anxiety in the general population and in primary care patients with active symptoms of depression and anxiety extended to adults with ABI; and (d) explore the effect of MBCT treatment on measures of locus of control, satisfaction with life, self-awareness, and coping in adults with ABI. A mixed methods design was used and participants were recruited from two community-based brain injury programs. The final sample comprised 12 adults with mild, moderate, and severe injuries. Interview and self-report measures were administered pre- and post-treatment. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured focus groups following MBCT treatment. Depression, denial, and self-awareness among participants showed statistically significant improvements and participants’ demonstrated statistically significant increases in positive reframing and active coping. Focus group data confirmed MBCT as an acceptable and effective approach for adults with ABI, and also speak to implications for the use of MBCT in ABI populations specifically. The need for a larger replication study with a control group is discussed. / Graduate

Parental Understanding and Satisfaction with Special Education Services in the State of Texas

Patton, Angela Havard 12 1900 (has links)
Parental participation in educational issues is relevant in assisting parents in understanding and becoming satisfied with their child's educational experience. Parental involvement is not only an ethical issue for teachers, but mandates have been established for special educators through various public laws. When involving parents in their children's education, it is relevant to consider various factors associated with students who are culturally and linguistically diverse. Parental satisfaction plays an important role in many cultures in obtaining parental involvement in decision-making meetings. If parents experience negative interactions, parental participation can be diminished. In other cultures, the satisfaction level raises parental trust in allowing school staff to make the appropriate choices for their children. Family values and beliefs among the various cultures should be a consideration when encouraging parents to participate in their child's educational process. Several barriers exist when involving different cultural groups; therefore, it is essential for educators to become aware of these barriers and learn strategies to overcome them. This study addresses parental understanding and satisfaction among ethnic group and throughout various disability groups by evaluating parental responses from a statewide survey and three focus groups.

Work-Life Balance, Work-Study Interface, Gender, Stress, and Satisfaction of Online Students

Ayadurai, Viya Kumari 01 January 2018 (has links)
There is a likelihood of stress in working students' struggles to manage work, family, studies, and personal life, yet little is known about differences in stress levels between male and female online students. Previous studies suggested that more men than women balanced work and family owing to women's asymmetrical family responsibilities. The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of gender on the relationships of work-life balance and work-study interface of working online students and their perceived stress and satisfaction with life. In this quantitative study, the theoretical framework included social role theory and spillover theory. A convenience sample of 80 working online students (aged 20-60+ years) participated in an online survey. Particpants completed a demographic survey, work-life balance scale, work-study interface scale, perceived stress scale, and satisfaction with life scale. Collected data were analyzed using regression analysis. The results indicated that in both work-life balance and work-study interface, working female online students had higher levels of perceived stress than males, and women had a lower level of satisfaction with life than men in work-study interface. Understanding spillover experiences and gender social roles of working online students in their work-life balance and work-study interface may lead to positive social change by providing useful information for policy makers to support online students. The study may also provide an understanding of the dynamic of the work-life-study balance for the students themselves.

Democracy and the Importance of Popular Support : An analysis on whether popular support for democracy should be a part of democratic theory

Djurklou, Sofie January 2023 (has links)
Empirical findings about political behaviour cast doubt on prevailing theories of democracy. The overwhelming majority of democratic theories either implicitly or explicitly imply the necessity of widespread public participation. However, this involvement is more frequently referred to as public participation in the democratic process than as popular support. This paper questions if democracy can even be discussed without considering how popular support affects democracy. According to research, a healthy democracy system will give people a bigger say in deciding on the important issues that affect their lives. To react to the needs and views of their populace, democracies all over the world need a more robust democratic theoretic model of democracy measurement, which includes a normative criterion of popular support for democracy. Democracy should be viewed as requiring widespread support in order to be defined as democratic.

The Populist Surge and Democratic Dissatisfaction: Unveiling the divide : A quantitative analysis on variations in the level of satisfaction with democracy among populists and non-populists in Western Europe the past 20 years

Lindaas Skeie, Anne-Margrethe January 2023 (has links)
This thesis deals with differences in the level of satisfaction with democracy between populists and non-populists in eleven Western European countries the past twenty years, with the common denominator that they all have experienced the electoral success of a populist radical-right party and a population increasingly expressing distrust and dissatisfaction with democracy. The thesis is based on a definition of populism in which it is regarded as a threat to democracy, and moreover, the thesis explores whether there are any significant differences in the level of satisfaction with democracy and whether these differences changes as time passes between these two voter groups.  The results of the analysis, which is carried out quantitively, strengthens the theoretical expectations, proving that there is a significant negative correlation between being populist and level of satisfaction with democracy, and that the effect becomes stronger as time passes. The results also align with the perception that societal changes such as modernization and globalization has contributed to the growth of new voter groups who express their dissatisfaction with democracy by opposing the establishment, thus turning to the political alternatives.
