Gydytojų, slaugytojų ir pacientų požiūris į slaugytoją / Attitude of doctors, nurses and patients towards nurses specialists

Darbo tikslas – Ištirti Viešosios Įstaigos Kauno Centro poliklinikos gydytojų, slaugytojų ir pacientų požiūrį į slaugytojos profesiją. Darbo uždaviniai: 1. Palyginti gydytojo, slaugytojo ir paciento požiūrį į slaugytojos profesiją. 2. Palyginti medicinos normose apibrėžtas slaugytojų funkcijas su gydytojų, slaugytojų ir pacientų požiūriu į slaugytojų atliekamas funkcijas. 3. Įvertinti slaugytojų pasitenkinimą darbu ir jo sąsajas su požiūriu į slaugytojos profesiją. Tyrimo metodika. Tyrimo metu buvo atlikta gydytojų, slaugytojų ir pacientų anoniminė anketinė apklausa. Gydytojų atsako dažnis 71 proc. ( N- 98), slaugytojų atsako dažnis 87 proc. (N-95) ir pacientų atsako dažnis 72proc. (N-420). Respondentų atsakymų įvertinimui buvo naudota 7 balų Likert skalė, kur: 1- visiškai nesutinku /niekada / visiškai nesvarbus / /labai blogai, o 7 – visiškai sutinku / visada /labai svarbus/ labai gerai. Duomenys buvo apdorojami naudojant statistinį duomenų analizės paketą SPSS 9.0. Duomenų analizei taikytos statistinės procedūros: chi kvadrato (χ2) kriterijus , Z – kriterijus ir 95proc. pasikliautinieji intervalai (PI), Kruskalio-Volison kriterijus ir 95proc. pasikliautinieji intervalai (PI), Spearmano koreliacijos koeficientas. The tasks of the Study: 1. To compare doctors’, nurses’ and patients’ attitude towards nursing specialists. 2. To compare nursing functions specified in Medical Regulations with the doctors’, nurses’ and patients’ attitude towards nursing specialists. 3. To evaluate nurses’ satisfaction with their work and its link with nursing profession. Methods of the research. An anonymous inquiry of the doctors, nurses and patients using questionnaires has been applied during the research. Doctors’ response rate 71 % ( N- 98), nurses’ response rate 87 % (N-95) and patients’ response rate 72% (N-420). To evaluate the replies of the respondents, the 7-point Likert scale has been employed, where: 1- totally disagree /never/absolutely unimportant/very bad, and 7 – totally agree/always/extremely important/ very well. The data obtained have been processed using SPSS 9.0 statistical software package. Can mindfulness and nostalgia raise adolescents’ happiness and subjective well-being? : A quantitative study on the effects of using nostalgia and mindfulness as methods to raise happiness and subjective well-being amongst adolescents.

Worldwide, 450 million people are estimated to have a mental health problem. Therefore this study set out with the aim to fill the gap in research on how to raise happiness and subjective well-being amongst adolescents. The sample of the study consisted of 90 students ranging from 16 - 19 years of age. They were randomly assigned to one of two methods; BPS (Best Personal Self) or nostalgia. Each group was then given varying instructions on a task they would perform on a daily basis, with tests taken on the first and last day of the study. The tests consisted of questions from the PANAS (Positive and Negative Affect Scale) and the SWLS (Satisfaction with Life Scale), which would determine the different methods short- and long-term effect on the participants happiness and subjective well-being. A control group was used to compare the results of the test groups. The results indicated nostalgia as being the most effective way to raise short-term well-being amongst adolescents, which raised interesting questions for future studies.

This study, presented in article format, contributed to the development of the science and practice of positive psychology / psychofortology, specifically in the South African multi-cultural context, through (i) a first phase exploration of the validity of several scales, mainly developed in a 'western' context, for applicability of measurement of facets of psychological well-being in the South African (multicultural) context (manuscript I), (ii) an exploration of patterns of psychological wellbeing and satisfaction with life in cultural context (manuscript 2), and (iii) a review of the state of the art of the applicability of knowledge (theory and experimental findings) from the domain of positive psychology, for use in practice to enhance the quality of life for people (manuscript 3). For purposes of this study "cultural context" referred to relatively individualist and relatively collectivist cultural orientations as manifested in shared patterns of behavioural readiness, assumptions, attitudes, beliefs, self-definitions, norms, values, historical background and language groupings. The aim of the first study I article was to do a first phase screening of psychometric properties of several scales measuring facets of psychological wellbeing in a South African context. Most of these scales were developed in a western context, and measure facets of cognitive, affective, conative, social, and spiritual psychological well-being. Data were gathered in two projects including 731 participants from different cultural contexts in the North West Province. The FORTproject (FORT = Clarifying the nature of psychological strengths; -=strength) included a convenience sample of 384 mainly white students and adults from the Potchefstroom area, and a convenience sample of 130 mainly black students from the Mafikeng area. The POWIRS-project (POWIRS = Profiles of Obese Women with the Insulin Resistance Syndrome) included 102 black and 1 15 white adult women. Reliability and validity of scales for use in a South African context were reported. Results indicated that the reliability and validity of scales varied from acceptable to totally unacceptable for use in specific subgroups. It was concluded that the most promising scales for use in all groups were the Affectometer 2 (AFM), the Fortitude Questionnaire (FORQ) (except the FORQ-S), the Cognitive Appraisal Questionnaire (CAQ), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) (the latter measuring pathology), and to some extent the Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC). This second study I article explored the patterns of psychological well-being and satisfaction with life in relatively more individualist and relatively more collectivist cultural contexts in South Africa. Secondary factor analyses were conducted on data obtained in four cross-sectional studies, comprising 1,909 participants. Questionnaires varied in studies, and measured facets of affective, cognitive, physical, spiritual, interpersonal and social well-being. Similarities and differences in patterns of psychological well-being and satisfaction with life were found. Satisfaction with life clusters with intra-psychological well-being in relatively more individualist cultural groups, and with inter-personal factors in relatively more collectivist African groups. Implications for models of psychological well-being and interventions to enhance psychological well-being were indicated. The aim of the third study I article was to review and evaluate the practical applicability of scientific knowledge from the domain of positive psychology / psychofortology, with specific reference to assessment, interventions, lifespan development and application in various contexts. It was shown that knowledge in the scientific domain of positive psychology has great relevance for, and application possibilities on individual, community and public policy levels. Applications were found as far as evaluation (assessment) and interventions are concerned in various life contexts (such as education, psychotherapy, health promotion, work), and in various phases of life (from childhood through adolescence and adulthood to old age). Several specific, empirically validated, strategies for enhancement of facets of psychological well-being were highlighted. It was pointed out that an advantage of positive psychology is that it has the theory, research evidence, and techniques to bring benefit to many people on the total mental health continuum, and not only, but also, to the minority who have a problem or are at risk of developing problems. A main conclusion across the different studies reported in this thesis (articles 1-3), was that cultural contexts and variables certainly need to be taken into account in research and practice of positive psychology. Despite the major developments in the scientific domain of positive psychology / psychofortology, its theories and applications have mainly been developed and explored in a western context, and further research is necessary, specifically in the African context. The relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and psychological well–being has been empirically and theoretically elaborated. This suggests that highly emotional intelligent individuals are likely to experience higher psychological well–being if compared to individuals with lower EI (Gallagher & Vella–Brodrick, 2008; Mikolajczak, Nelis, Hansenne, & Quoidbach, 2008; Mavroveli, Petrides, Rieffe, & Baker,2007; Schutte, Malouff, Thorsteinsson, Bhullar, & Rooke, 2007; Zeidner, Matthews, & Roberts, 2009). On the other hand, the role of gender has been found to be influential as well as contradictory in both EI and psychological well–being. Gender has been shown to differentially influence both emotional intelligence and psychological well–being (Castro–Schilo & Kee, 2010; McIntryre, 2010; Schutte, Malouf, Simunek, McKenly & Holland, 2002;Thomsen, Mehlesen, Viidik, Sommerlund & Zachariae, 2005). Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the role of gender as moderator in the relationship between emotional intelligence and aspects of psychological well–being (positive affect, negative affect and satisfaction with life). EI was measured with the Emotional Intelligence Scale (Schutte et al., 1998) while psychological well–being was measured with the Satisfaction With Life Scale (Diener, Emmons, Larsen & Griffen (1985) and the Affectometer 2 (Kamman & Flett, 1983). A cross–sectional survey design based on the study by Williams, Wissing, Rothmann and Temane (2009) was implemented after informed consent had been obtained. A sample of 459 participants consisting of both males (n= 59.5%) and females (n=32.9%) with an average age between 25 to 44 years. A 2–step hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to determine, in the first place, the influence of EI on psychological well–being, followed by the interaction between gender and EI. The findings indicate that gender moderated only the relationship between EI and negative affect. The influence of EI on the two dependent variables, namely positive affect and satisfaction with life, was not moderated by gender. The conclusion is thus made that gender’s role as a moderator between EI and psychological well–being is evaluated only between EI’s ability to reduce the perception and experience of negative components on one’s life. Limitations of the study include the use of a cross–sectional design that lacks continuous monitoring of variables across time. The use of self–report measures indicating only subjective self–report by the participants themselves without other triangulating or collateral information is another limitation. As well as the lack of control for other moderator variables such as age, urban–rural context, and educational attainment that may play a role, but have not been taken into account. Future research can investigate other possible predicting variables (e.g. interpersonal relationships, social skills, coping and social support) on gender as moderator. These predicting variables can possibly explain additional variance in psychological well–being. Afin de mieux appréhender l’expérience doctorale, le présent travail s’intéresse tout particulièrement à trois dimensions : le stress, la santé physique et la relation d’encadrement. Du point de vue théorique, il s’appuie d’une part sur le modèle intégratif et multifactorial de Bruchon-Schweitzer (2002), de l’autre sur le concept d’ « alliance de travail » (Schlosser et Gelso, 2001).La première partie de cette thèse propose un état des lieux des études sur les doctorants. La deuxième partie est constituée de deux études sur le stress et la santé des doctorants. Une première enquête en ligne montre que l’année d’inscription en thèse, la filière disciplinaire et le degré de satisfaction par rapport à l’encadrement sont des prédicteurs significatifs du stress perçu et, dans une certaine mesure, des symptômes somatiques. Par ailleurs le stress perçu joue un rôle médiateur entre l’activité physique et les symptômes somatiques. Une étude qualitative exploratoire sur les facteurs de stress vient compléter la première enquête et montre que la précarité et l’incertitude par rapport à l’avenir professionnel constituent les principales causes de stress qui affectent les doctorants.La troisième partie porte sur la relation d’encadrement et sur son évaluation. Elle comprend également deux études : la première analyse les différentes échelles de mesure de la relation d’encadrement disponibles en anglais, tandis que la deuxième a pour objectif de valider la traduction française de l’Advisory working alliance inventory (Schlosser et Gelso, 2001) et de proposer un modèle prédicitif de la satisfaction par rapport aux études doctorales. / In order to gain a better understanding of the doctoral experience, the current work focuses on three dimensions: stress, physical health and mentoring. From a theoretical point of view, it is based on the integrative and multifactorial model of Bruchon-Schweitzer (2002) and on the concept of “working alliance” (Schlosser and Gelso, 2001). The first part of this thesis presents the current state of the art of doctoral studies. The second part consists of two studies on doctoral students’ stress and health. A first online survey conducted among a large sample of participants led to a better understanding of the relationships between socio-demographic factors and health behaviours on the one hand and stress and physical health on the other hand. The results show that thesis year, discipline and satisfaction with supervision are significant predictors of perceived stress and, to some extent, somatic symptoms. In addition, they show that perceived stress plays a mediating role between physical activity and somatic symptoms and that a sustained practice of physical activity helps reduce the harmful effects of stress on physical health. The second study is an exploratory qualitative research on stressors. It completes the first survey and shows that precariousness and uncertainty about their professional future are the main causes of stress affecting doctoral students. The last part deals with the advisory relationship and its evaluation. It also consists in two studies: the first one analyses the different measures of the advisory relationship available in English, while the second study validated the French translation of the Advisory working alliance inventory (Schlosser et Gelso, 2001), and proposed a predictive model of satisfaction with respect to doctoral studies.

The Role of Shift Work on Psychological Well-being on Swedish Single Mothers

The purpose of the present work was to study the psychological well-being of shift working single mothers in comparison with shift working cohabiting mothers, single mothers working regular hours and cohabiting mothers working regular hours. This was done using the four scales: Perceived stress, perceived social support, general health and satisfaction with life. The convenience sample consisted of Swedish care workers and nurses, who answered a questionnaire. The responses were tested through a 2 x 2 MANOVA. The results showed that there was a significant difference in psychological well-being between single and cohabiting mothers, but no difference among shift working and regular working mothers, and no interaction effects of the four scales on the four groups of mothers. While single mothers’ psychological well-being was worse than cohabiting mothers’, there was no significant difference among shift workers and regular day workers. The psychological well-being of shift working single mothers did not significantly differ from shift working cohabiting mothers, single mothers working regular hours and cohabiting mothers working regular hours. The results are discussed with respect to previous research and we concluded that among Swedish mothers, being a single mother can have more impact on well-being than working shifts.

Manufacturing satisfaction with work-family balance: the effects of employee type, technology use, & life role salience

Knight / Satisfaction with work-family balance is a relatively new construct that differs from other work-life constructs in several ways: it is not focused on conflict between work/family domains, does not include cross-domain transfer processes, has no directional implications, and is not multidimensional. The current study has three purposes: 1. Examine work-family balance issues for both blue-collar and white-collar employees, as the literature has focused mainly on white-collar employees. 2. Examine relationship between technology and satisfaction with work-family balance. 3. Assess how role salience influences satisfaction with work-family balance. Participants were recruited and compensated for completing a 60 item online survey via Qualtrics. Blue-collar participants were recruited from manufacturing industries, while no industry was specified for white-collar employees. The sample consisted of 210 participants (105 blue-collar, 105 white-collar). Several checks were included throughout the survey to ensure data quality. Two hierarchical regression analyses were conducted. The first regression revealed that boundary control and autonomy predict satisfaction with work-family balance, while employee type and boundary interruptions do not. Boundary control, family identity, and stress significantly predicted satisfaction with work-family balance in the second regression, while boundary interruptions, work identity, hours worked, and technology use did not. Results indicate white-collar workers have higher satisfaction with work-family balance, lower stress, and lower turnover intentions compared to blue-collar workers. Results also reveal that technology use to complete work outside of work hours is significantly and positively related to stress. Nearly half of participants report feeling expected to utilize technology to complete work outside of work hours. In addition, while it was hypothesized that those higher on family identity would have lower satisfaction with work-family balance when they used technology outside of work hours, worked longer hours, and had more frequent boundary interruptions than would those lower on family identity, the opposite effect was found for each of these variables. Implications of the study include: 1. Organizations may improve employee satisfaction with work-family balance by increasing autonomy and boundary control. 2. Employees may improve satisfaction with work-family balance by taking time to de-stress from work and limiting use of technology to complete work outside of work hours.

Satisfação pós-recuperação e intenção de recompra no varejo online : proposição e teste de moderadores dessa relação

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo central investigar fatores que moderam a relação entre satisfação pós-recuperação e intenção de recompra no varejo online. Mais especificamente, esta pesquisa visa analisar se os construtos qualidade do relacionamento, resistência à mudança e motivo inferido moderam a relação entre satisfação com o gerenciamento de reclamações e intenção de recompra no varejo online. Para verificar tais moderações, inicialmente foi realizada a etapa exploratória de pesquisa, na qual, por meio de entrevistas em profundidade, evidenciou-se que as variáveis propostas poderiam moderar a relação entre a variável independente e dependente desta dissertação, bem como foi adicionado o construto valor econômico como possível moderador da relação entre satisfação pós-reclamação e intenção de recompra. Em seguida, para testar as hipóteses propostas foi aplicada uma survey junto a consumidores norte-americanos (N=500), operacionalizada com auxílio do Qualtrics, via Mechanical Turk. Como resultado dos testes, tem-se que a qualidade do relacionamento, o motivo inferido e a percepção de valor econômico moderam a relação entre satisfação pós-recuperação e intenção de recompra no varejo online, ou seja, podem explicar, em partes, a não linearidade da relação entre a variável independente e dependente desta pesquisa. Destaca-se ainda que as dimensões da qualidade do relacionamento (a saber: satisfação, confiança e comprometimento) sugeridas neste estudo também moderaram, individualmente, a relação entre a variável independente e dependente desta pesquisa. Sendo assim, esta dissertação contribuiu para a literatura de Marketing e comércio eletrônico ao evidenciar que tanto a qualidade do relacionamento, bem como as dimensões de satisfação, confiança e comprometimento moderam a relação entre satisfação com o gerenciamento de reclamações e intenção de recompra. Além disso, evidencia-se que a elevada percepção de valor econômico, e os motivos inferidos pelos clientes (se positivos), diante da falha inicial ocorrida, também podem sinalizar intenções de recompra dos consumidores junto a sites varejistas. / This dissertation aims to investigate factors that moderate the relationship between satisfaction with complaint handling and repurchase intention in online retail. More specifically, this research aims to examine whether the quality of the relationship constructs, resistance to change and inferred motive moderate the relationship between satisfaction with complaint handling and repurchase intention in online retail. To test such moderations, was taken an exploratory research stage through in-depth interviews in which it became clear that the proposed constructs could moderate the relationship between the independent and dependent variables of this dissertation, as well as the variable economic value was added as a possible moderator of the relationships between satisfaction with complaint handling and repurchase intention. Then, to test the hypotheses was applied a survey with online consumers (N=500) from United States, through Qualtrics and Mechanical Turk. The results indicate that the relationship quality, the inferred motive and the perceived economic value moderated the relationship between satisfaction with complaint handling and repurchase intention in online retail. It is emphasized that the dimensions of relationship quality (satisfaction, trust and commitment) suggested in this study also moderated, in an individual way, the relationship between the independent and dependent variables of this study. Thus, this dissertation has contributed to the literature of marketing and e-commerce by showing that both the relationship quality as well as the dimensions (satisfaction, trust and commitment) moderate the relationship between satisfaction with complaint handling and repurchase intention.
