Marques, Fernanda Martins January 2011 (has links)
Although children are part of the school which is addressed mainly to them, their opinions concerning this institution are rarely heard. Based on the cultural historical perspective of human development, this investigation aimed to comprehend how children conceptualize the preschool. Five 5-year-old dyads enrolled in the last year of the preschool compounded the sample. Scenes and instructions previously organized along three play sessions were used to elicit episodes compatibles with the aims of the study. Thematic content analysis was used to analyze the data. The results showed that for the children the school is mainly a place to play and in which specific activities are carried out in a particular physical space. These results open the discussion on the spaces and the opportunities preschools are actually providing for children.

Sibling Behaviors and Mexican-origin Adolescents' After-School Activities

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: Time adolescents spend in organized or informal skill based activities after school is associated with a variety of positive developmental outcomes. Little is known about how siblings might shape adolescents' motivation to participate in after-school activities. The current study applied the expectancy value model and ecological theory to understand if sibling behaviors were related to adolescents' after-school activities for 34 Mexican origin families. Qualitative and quantitative results suggested siblings engaged in five promoting behaviors (i.e., support, provider of information, role modeling, comparison, co-participation) and three inhibiting behaviors (i.e., babysitting, transportation, and negativity) towards adolescent activity participation. Furthermore, sibling behaviors differed by adolescent characteristics (i.e., cultural orientation, familism, and neighborhood) and sibling characteristics (i.e., gender, age). The results provide evidence of the various promoting and inhibiting socialization behaviors sibling might use to influence adolescents' activity motivation. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Based on the ideas of Wallon and Vygotsky, it is possible to estimate that affectivity and intelligence, interrelated, become determinate factors for the individual development, acting in the learning process, favoring the interaction between subject (student) and object (school subjects). Under this perspective, the present research has as objective to describe and analyze the affective dimensions identified in the decisions of the teacher about the teaching activities, on the daily life of the classroom, during the process of literacy acquisition by the children. This research aims to analyze the affective aspects present in the literacy teaching activities and their contributions for the construction of the knowledge. During the research, observations of the teaching activities in the classroom and interviews with the teacher and students were done, whose data were registered in audio and video cassettes and in the field diary. After that, the data were selected and transcribed and, then, using the autoscopy procedure, the students were interviewed. Later, since the data proceeding from the video-recorded comments, of the sessions of autoscopy and the registers in the field diary, thematic nuclei were constructed, in order to identify the affective dimensions present in the teaching activities developed by the teacher. The thematic nuclei demonstrate that the affective dimensions refer to cultural materials used, to the presence of the teacher, to the collective making, to the ways of teaching and to the diversity of the teaching activities in classroom / Mestrado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Mestre em Educação

Teacher participation in community development in the Insikazi Circuit in Mpumalanga Province

Maseko, Thandi Eunice January 2013 (has links)
Thesis ( M.Dev.) -- University of Limpopo, 2013 / This study was undertaken with the purpose of investigating the involvement of educators in community development in the lnsikazi Circuit. In terms of research design, the study used a case study, namely the lnsikazi community. In-depth interviews were carried out with participants. Focus group discussions were also used to weigh the different standpoints of stakeholders and establish areas of agreement and disagreement. In line with the dictates of qualitative research, data analysis was done using the constant comparative method. Each interview was transcribed, labelled and appropriately coded using emerging themes. The researcher found that educators should act as promoters of community education by inviting the community to school meetings and sensitizing them about the need for their children's' education. However educators do not get the opportunity to do so since the majority of parents do not honor such meetings. Some of the key findings include: • Educators were seen as sources of information for the community by bringing awareness to the community but their busy schedules usually mitigate against their playing this role. • Educators should be community mobilizers but they are not effective in this role as they are usually out of touch with community needs. • Educators should play the role of as organizers and coordinators of the different stakeholders, but the majority of them indicated that they were not interested in community work as it is demanding. Some of the reasons that hampered effective educator participation in community development include a lack of time, unresponsive parents/community and lack of monetary incentives. It is therefore recommended that to overcome all these problems there needs to be regular interaction between the community and the educators. During such interactions, issues pertaining to community development and how community development should benefit both the community and the educators should be highlighted. It is the researcher's hope that through such interactions, it will be possible to build genuine partnerships between the community, educators and other stakeholders.

Sydhagen, Karin January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this project is to identify what conditions young people receive in Södertälje municipality in relation to human rights. With that seek an explanation for the differences, the municipality in order to eventually reduce them, by working specifically with the implementation of human rights and possible resources. The method of this assumption has been qualitative in nature, in-depth interviews of 15 informants. Selection group are principals, teachers and pupils of mixed ages, ethnicity, gender and disability. The results have shown that human rights do not exist concretely in education among schools in Södertälje, however, they are often integrated in the teaching of law. Teachers feel that the resources of poor nature, affecting efforts to meet the decent education. Students lack of awareness regarding human rights and demand greater knowledge and acceptance from teachers and other institutions. Prerequisite for teachers to work for human rights criticism, partly because of lack of resources, but also because of gaps in knowledge on the subject. The municipality should require more effort and resources to ensure that rights are respected and implemented in school activities. There are varying levels of knowledge among students in the municipality, as well as threats and discrimination, which is not satisfied to the extent required, hence not observed human rights in the municipality.
