Separate and warring selves : identity crises in Africa in Shiva Naipaul's "North of South: an African journey"

Thesis (MA (English Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This project seeks to analyze the representation of identities in Shiva Naipaul's travel narrative North of South: An African Journey (1978) as encoded in the binaries of primitive / traditional; civilized / modern; settler / native; civic / tribal and neo-colonial / liberated. By analyzing this select series of identities, this project aims to explore the fractured nature of identity as constructed in the post-colony. It will argue that the identities are rendered unstable by the ungrounded nature of the post-colonial space in which they are located. Naipaul concludes his travel narrative by qualifying the postcolonial situation as an abortion of Western civilization in the trope of Conrad's Kurtz. Naipaul implies that any identity in Africa is a simulacrum, a phantom double, a copy of something that was not there to begin with. He attempts to articulate the diverse cultures that he encounters as though he were apart from them without recognizing that he is essentially and inextricably a part of the various cultural articulations themselves. It is easy to criticize Naipaul, therefore, as a non-starter. With the advantages of hindsight, however, it is possible for the contemporary reader to recognize these instabilities as evidence of the post-modern phenomenon in which reality is not an absolute. As a modernist writer, Naipaul's efforts to understand these instabilities of identity as an articulation of culture are circumvented by a Sisyphean struggle wherein he attempts to establish a sense of ontological alterity in the narrative yet implicates himself, as well as his invocation of archival literature and hence his ultimate position of disillusionment, hopelessness and doom. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie projek poog om die verteenwoordiging van identiteite in Shiva Naipaul se reisverhaal, North of South: An African Journey (1978), gekodeerd met die binere van die primitiewe / tradisionele ; beskaafde / moderne; setlaars / inheemse; staats / etniese; en neo-kolonialisme / vryheid, te analiseer. Deur die analise van die gekose reeks identiteite, neig die studie om die gebroke aard van identiteit in In post-koloniale omgewing te ondersoek, en te redeneer dat die identiteite bemoeilik word deur die ongegronde natuur van die postkoloniale ruimte waarin hulle voorkom. The genre affiliation is a postmodern study: Virtual Reality (VR) becomes a comprehensive concept, in the face of modernism's illusion, when rhetoric validates all discourses. All is VR. The study is in three sections with an overall introduction and conclusion: the first section introduces VR in its postmodern setting, the second section establishes the postmodern timeless/spaceless paradigm of HyperReality in which all Hermeneutics are being done from, the last section draws the paradigm into the Creatio Ex Nihilio discourse of the Scriptures. The proposed theological model is an intratextual theological model, however when YAHWEH precedes language then all discourses become intratextually part of the Biblical discourse. Human creativity is a metaphorical journey; the Fall was the outset of two languages, one in the presence of YAHWEH, while the other one void of this presence led to a nihilistic abstract constellation. Intersections : Baudrillard's hyperreality and Lyotard's metanarratives in selected Tarantino Visual Tropes

This dissertation examines two films directed by Quentin Tarantino, whom I have situated as a postmodern film director, within the theoretical context of the philosophies of two postmodern philosophers: Jean Baudrillard and Jean-François Lyotard. I argue that the major institutions of society, such as the family and religion, are viewed as grand narratives, in Lyotard’s sense of the term, which Tarantino repeatedly subverts. Overlapping with this intersection of Lyotard’s philosophy in Tarantino’s films is the Baudrillardian loss of the real, which manifests as hyperreality in many scenes. I suggest that Tarantino makes a conscious effort to create such hyperreality with the creation of playful signifiers in his films. I examine selected scenes to find Baudrillard’s “successive phases of the image” (Baudrillard 2010:6) that lead to the creation of a simulacrum. The compelling intersections between the creation of Baudrillardian simulacra and the subversion of Lyotard’s grand narratives are explored within selected scenes which are deconstructed by means of film narratology, semiotic analysis and narrative analysis. The combination of the various methods of media research in this thesis enables what Jane Stokes calls “a more textured understanding” (2008:27) of the films under discussion. A close reading from a semiotic point of view facilitates a deconstruction of some obscure elements, such as the embedded meaning in lyrics and dialogue or the messages implicit in the mise en scène. / English Studies / M. Bioculturalism, simulation and satire : the case of S1mOne

Text in English / This study offers a close look at Andrew Niccol’s (b 1964) satirical film S1mOne from a biocultural perspective emphasising the technological simulation of a Hollywood celebrity and the farce ensuing from her creation. The film is based on Niccol’s assumption that the hypertrophied culture into which he places his cultural object will be one in which human traits of sociality will be well advanced and the highly demanding genre of satire will be entertaining, persuasive, and on occasion punitive in its ridicule of Hollywood. The study makes a contribution to the idea that a cultural object/text operates as a rapid mechanism for propagating cognition — it shows how Niccol has adapted to less than optimal conditions in his world of Hollywood — in this case he parodies the role of the director of Hollywood films in the figure of Taransky. Cognition is understood as that series of mental processes which include attention, memory, learning (from mimicry as well as other forms), problem solving, ratiocination, and making decisions. Niccol relies on his audience's embodied capacities and skills of recognition, thinking, feeling, remembering, and accounting for his message to be understood. Niccol’s technical skill in editing his narrative to emphasise the satire of the narrative of Taransky and Simone is a critical part of the film’s success. Interpersonal and social propagation of cognition is achieved through reference to other cultural artefacts recalling a variety of similar ideas used in film and other visual creations. The cultural significance of the simulacrum, Simone, is that she is a vehicle for and a form of socially propagated cognition. The powerful imagistic impression of film helps to structure internalised cognitive artefacts in the viewers who are expected to reflect on their habits of viewing and thinking. Le cinéma n’enregistre pas seulement ce qui existe: il arrive qu’il fabrique des objets pour les filmer. Des « simulacres » qui peuvent être aussi bien des parodies d’œuvres d’art que des machines à voyager dans le temps. Comment penser ces objets improbables, excroissances filmiques souvent kitsch, qui dénoncent au sein du film même ses artifices fictionnels? Comment pensent-ils le cinéma, ses spécificités et ses relations avec les arts plastiques? À partir de l'exemple du cinéma français des années 1960, ce travail de thèse s’est donné pour objectif de replacer ces objets dans la culture visuelle, de les analyser comme des carrefours artistiques et de débattre des questions théoriques qu’ils soulèvent, notamment de la capacité du cinéma à mettre en fiction le pouvoir des autres arts. Au point de rencontre entre la théorie artistique et la fiction cinématographique, l’histoire de ces objets hybrides permet de comprendre que le cinéma peut se faire historien d’art et que l’histoire de l’art est elle-même une longue suite de fictions sur les pouvoirs attribués aux objets. En cela, ces simulacres cinématographiques apportent des sources inédites à l’historien des arts visuels. / Not only do films record what exists: they sometimes create objects to be filmed. These « simulacra » can just as well be parodies of art works or time machines. How do we think about these peculiar objects, all-too-often kitsch filmic excressences, which serve to highlight fictional artifice? Moreover, how do we think about cinema, in both its specificities and its relation to Plastic Arts? Looking through the lens of French cinema in the 1960's, this thesis intends to reconsider these objects in the context of visual culture, to analyse them as artistic crossroads, and to debate the theoretical issues they raise, most particularly the ability of cinema to turn into fiction the power of other arts. At the meeting point between artistic theory and cinematographic fiction, the history of these hybrid objects allows one to understand that cinema can perform the role of an art historian, and that art history is itself a succession of fictions about the power assigned to objects. As such, these cinematographic simulacra provide visual arts historians with unexpected sources.

Beyond Morality : Alternative Gay Narratives in Mark Ravenhill’s Shopping and Fucking and Dennis Cooper’s The Sluts

The gay male emerged as a visible public consumer during 1990s, when the LGBTQ movement in the United Kingdom and the United States was marked by conflicting commercial and political motives, heightened by the AIDS crisis. The cultural tension surrounding the gay male subject was reflected through various literary expressions. In the United Kingdom Mark Ravenhill’s Shopping and Fucking (1996), as part of the in-yer-face theatre, exploded in the face of the bourgeoisie. In the US America Dennis Cooper’s highly publicised George Miles Cycle (1989-2000), was followed by The Sluts (2004) as part of the transgressive literature, provoking both straight and gay communities. Through an analysis of themes such as capitalism, commerce, hyperreality, internalised fear, desire, and violence in the works, an alternative image of the gay male is distinguished. This is an image of the gay male subject that is complex, multi-faceted, contradictory and polyvalent. The characters relate differently to the hegemonic hyperreal role model, but are exposed to the same social structure that dictates their living conditions and positioning them as objects possible to practice violence on. The works provide a widened and complicated image the public image of the gay male. Their countercultural narratives trace how the gay male subject have been affected by the heteronormative society. When the provided stereotype is too narrow to express the burden and the joy of the contemporary gay male subject, alternatives, like the depictions by Ravenhill and Cooper, may allow the subject to fully possess the gay experiences of pain, sorrow and anger that he has been forced to bear. This research explores how the violence within the texts holds a liberating potential.

Genom att göra en idéanalys av Jonna Bornemarks analys av Nicolas Cusanus för att se om detta kan vara en väg för att ge en mera mångfasetterad bild och värde av ordet Gud och gudsbilden till den scientistiska människan i Sverige. Uppsatsen tar avstamp i att försöka visa på de nycklar Cusanus filosofi ger genom Jonna Bornemarks tolkning av Cusanus i Det omätbaras renässans. / Nicholas Cusanus levde mellan åren 1401 och 1464. Cusanus var astronom, matematiker, teolog och filosof. En verklig renässansmänniska. Cusanus var en man som var på gränsen mellan skolastiken på medeltiden och renässansens mera kosmopolitiska livshållning som tiden gav. Cusanus var starkt influerad av den mystiken som bland annat Mäster Eckhart stod bakom. Den mystika negativa teologin som talade om att det är enklare att beskriva vad den kristna Gud inte är, än att berätta vad som Gud är. Cusanus studerade både Aristoteles och den Plotinos nyplatonska filosofin. Denna filosof kom jag kontakt med genom Cusanus lilla bok Gudsseendet med stort innehåll, vilket han skrev som en guide till munkarna i Tegernsee. Den behandlar den sinnliga bilden och de begrepp som gör att man kan se det som kan finnas bakom den ikoniska bilden. Den ikoniska bilden uppfattar Cusanus vara det djup som en bild kan vara bärare av. Det symboliska värdet på den bild som väcker åskådarens reflektion och reaktion. Den ikoniska bilden är bärare av detta djup som kan vara en utlösande av det personliga symboliska värdet för den specifika bilden. I Gudseendet är det en ikon som Cusanus kallar för ”Guds ikon”. Cusanus öppnade dörrar för mig i hur man kan tänka om att inte ser med de fysiska sinnena, utan måste använda sitt inre öga för att kunna se det som är större än det jag bara kan med de fysiska sinnena erfara. Startpunkten till denna uppsats är att kanske kunna förstå hur människan kan komma närmare det som inte sinnligt kan erfaras, den kunskapen menar Cusanus behöver människan för att vara en hel människa. Bornemark tar Cusanus filosofi till dagens samhällsproblem med att samhället alltid vill mäta allting. Studiens inriktning är att försöka svara på de frågor som uppsatsen ställer inför Bornemarks tolkning av Cusanus filosofi. / <p>På grund av corona utfördes framläggningen online.</p>

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) / Informationist Science Fiction theory provides a way of analysing science fiction texts and narratives in order to demonstrate on an informational basis the uniqueness of science fiction proper as a mode of fiction writing. The theoretical framework presented can be applied to all types of written texts, including non-fictional texts. In "Informationist Science Fiction Theory and Informationist Science Fiction" the author applies the theoretical framework and its specific methods and principles to various contemporary science fiction works, including works by William Gibson, Neal Stephenson and Vernor Vinge. The theoretical framework introduces a new informational theoretic re-framing of existing science fiction literary theoretic posits such as Darko Suvin's novum, the mega-text as conceived of by Damien Broderick, and the work of Samuel R Delany in investigating the subjunctive mood in SF. An informational aesthetics of SF proper is established, and the influence of analytic philosophy - especially modal logic - is investigated. The materialist foundations of the metaphysical outlook of SF proper is investigated with a view to elucidating the importance of the relationship between scientific materialism and SF. SF is presented as The Fiction of Veridical, Counterfactual and Heterogeneous Information.

Les auteurs contemporains, des plasticiens aux réalisateurs de blockbusters, créent des images où le réel et le virtuel semblent de la même étoffe. Leurs films, vidéos et installations exposent un monde qui émerge de l’immatérialité des écrans.À la différence des images qui procèdent de l'imprégnation de la lumière réelle sur des surfaces photosensibles, les simulacres numériques résultent du langage binaire. Ils correspondent à du code informatique qui transforme l’image en une somme de données.Dès lors, ceux-ci entraînent-ils une mutation de notre rapport à l’image ? En quoi induisent-ils une nouvelle perception des représentations artistiques où prime l’apport d’une subjectivité ?Les simulacres numériques apparaissent après des millénaires d’images qui relèvent de l’ontologie et entretiennent un lien sensible avec le réel. Le spectateur ayant besoin de se projeter dans ce qui emprunte à sa nature et ce qui interroge ses aspirations, ses sentiments comme ses croyances, il attend de la simulation numérique la même capacité d’incarnation et de transfiguration que les autres moyens d’expression.Entrelaçant la tradition et le contemporain, cette recherche analyse l’éloquence sensible du simulacre numérique au défi du vivant dans le cinéma et les arts plastiques des années 2000-2010 selon les concepts de présence, représentation et simulation.Comment le numérique actualise-t-il des codes culturels et esthétiques hérités de l’histoire de l’art ? Cette recherche tente de comprendre la nature et le sens des simulacres numériques du vivant en tant qu’ils conjuguent l’incorporel synthétique à l’argument ontologique. / The contemporary authors, from visual artists to blockbusters’ directors, create images where the real and the virtual seem from the same cloth. Theirs movies, videos and installations show a world which emerges from the immateriality of the screens.Unlike images which are the result of the impregnation of the actual light on photosensitive surfaces, digital simulacra stem from binary language. They are made of pure computer code that can transform the image into a sum of data.Therefore, will the digital simulacra change our relationship to images? How do these digital sham images induce a new perception of artistic performances where subjectivity and its contributions are the prime factors?We are confronted with these digital simulacra of images after millennia of imagery that relate from ontology and that maintain a significant link with reality. The viewer, having the need to project himself into something that borrows from his nature and that questions his aspirations, his feelings as well as his beliefs, expects from the digital simulation the same capacity for incarnation and transfiguration that he experiences from others means of expression.Confronting and intertwining the traditional and the contemporary, this research analyses the sensitive eloquence of digital simulacra and how they face the challenge of real life, through film and in visual arts over the decade 2000-2010, based on the concepts of presence, representation and simulation.How do the various uses of digital technology force us to update the cultural and aesthetic codes that we inherited from Art history? Thus, this research attempts to understand the substance and the meaning of the digital pretence of life, which combines the synthetic intangible with an ontological argument.
