"They Are More Afraid of Losing Women Than of Having Women" : How the structural transformation of the Swedish Armed Forces has affected the experience for female recruits

Granat, Mimmi January 2016 (has links)
When interviewing female conscripts, Emma Lindgren Lauritzon (2012) found that they perceived their basic military training in the Swedish Armed Forces as a negative experience. The women felt that the environment was hostile and that they served on the conditions of men. This is especially alarming since the unequal conscription was replaced by voluntary service for all in 2010, making the Swedish defence dependent on attracting the whole population to fill up its necessary positions. Therefore, this thesis examines how female recruits experience the new basic military training and if the structural transformation, with a more gender equal entrance, has had an impact on the individual level. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted, designed and presented by a deductive thematic analysis, and later interpreted through feministic and gender organizational theories. The results indicate a positive development in their experiences, and more so – a new development of the women feeling especially wanted and needed. This perceived dependency on women is arguably in the risk of backfiring, generating guilt if they disappoint the organisation. This study gives vital insight to the organisation in question, the Swedish Armed Forces, and also several new and interesting aspects to build future research on regarding women in the military.

George S. Patton Jr. and the Lost Cause Legacy

Rodriguez, Ismael 08 1900 (has links)
Historians have done their duty in commemorating an individual who was, as Sidney Hook’s Hero in History would describe, an “event making-man.” A myriad of works focused on understanding the martial effort behind George S. Patton Jr. from his ancestral lineage rooted in military tradition to his triumph during the Second World War. What is yet to be understood about Patton, however, is the role that the Civil War played in his transformation into one of America’s iconic generals. For Patton, the Lost Cause legacy, one that idealized the image of the Confederate soldier in terms of personal honor, courage, and duty, became the seed for his preoccupation for glory.

Návrh zajištění stavební jámy hloubeného úseku tunelu na vysokorychlostní trati Brno-Přerov / Design of sheeting on a excavated section of tunnel on a high-speed line Brno-Přerov

Umlauf, Jiří January 2020 (has links)
In first part of the thesis are proposed four variants of retaining structures for deep excavation of cut-and-cover tunnel part. It is nailed slope, pile wall, nailed slope in combination with pile wall and soldier pile wall. For those structures is in following part carried out an economic analysis and the most cost effective variant is chosen. Chosen structure is further analyzed in next part. This analysis is carried out with finite element method in software PLAXIS. As a material model is chosen Hardening Soil model and input parameters were determined by empiric formulas from literature. Behavior of neogene clays, in which is the structure designed, is considered as undrained, by type Undrained A. In the last part of the thesis is described technological procedure of construction this retaining structure.

Predicting Treatment Performance Using Ternary Plot : Macronutrients’ impact on biomass conversion efficiency

Gobl, Madeleine January 2022 (has links)
Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) waste treatment is becoming a more sought-after organic waste treatment since it produces larvae for animal feed as well as fertilizer, the need for prediction and optimization of treatment performance increases. This study aims to predict biomass conversion efficiency (BCE) for waste going into treatment, using only the nutritional data from other studies as it could give a good performance estimation while using available data. First, macronutrient fractions, based on a normalized total weight of volatile solids (VS), were calculated from nutritional data of other studies and of this present study.  Using the results, coordinates of these samples were calculated and put on the ternary plot, revealing trends for different macronutrient compositions. To validate these trends, selected nutrient compositions were created as waste mixtures containing fish, bread and vegetable waste and then treated by BSFL. After treatment, BCE and waste reduction in both VS and wet weight basis were noted.  The results showed that a composition high in carbohydrate and low in fat content is favorable for a high BCE value while protein content remained similar across all treatments and only seemed to slightly increase BCE. Treatment A5 held the highest BCE%VS (32.6 ± 3.5) with a composition of 73%VS carbohydrates, 19%VS protein and 8%VS fat and control treatment (A0) with no fish waste held the highest BCE%WW  (21.2 ± 1.8).   When comparing with the results of the other studies used to make the trends in the ternary plot, predictions of BCE were more accurate for a composition  of  70%VS carbohydrates, 20-25%VS protein and < 8%VS fat and also for compositions with similar waste substrates, as their percental changes were similar. This suggests that it is possible to predict high BCE  values from nutritional data in a ternary plot and could be of use when optimizing larval production.

Tideskog, Johan, Lindström, Mikael January 2023 (has links)
The Swedish armed forces (SAF) are growing. To meet the need for a more robust and capable defense force, as described by the proposed strategical military concept, the SAF must steadily increase military personnel volumes. A personnel category that the SAF has had difficulties recruiting are employed soldiers and squad leaders. The study aims to explore what motivates conscripts to choose voluntary employment as professional soldiers and squad leaders within the Swedish Armed Forces after their mandatory military service. The study is a qualitative, inductive study that gathers empirical facts through interviews with recently employed soldiers and a workshop with conscripted soldiers still completing their military service. The study's frame of reference describes how the conscripted soldiers adapt through socialization and form a nascent professional identity. Furthermore, it describes the soldiers' attachment and commitment to their professional role. To further understand the soldiers' motivation, the empirical evidence is viewed through a generational perspective. The results show that how the soldiers experience their mandatory military service constitutes the decisive factor for their choice to continue in the Armed Forces. Conscripts who choose to stay in the Armed Forces have both had a positive affirmation of their professional identity during their military service and have experienced leaders who are strong and positive role models for the profession. Their primary motivations embody expectations of the special characteristics and prerequisites of the military profession as well as the strong sense of cohesion and comradeship that they regard as unique to the military profession. The authors conclude that more of the conscripted soldiers would be motivated to continue if the SAF would adopt a more coherent approach of culture and leadership that does not differentiate between conscripted and contracted soldiers. The authors also conclude that the organizational culture of the SAF need to adapt to the new generation.

Apparitions of Planetary Consciousness in Contemporary Coming-of-Age Narratives: Reimagining Knowledge, Responsibility and Belonging

Mackey, Allison E. January 2011 (has links)
<p>My dissertation explores contemporary coming-of-age stories that employ spectral and relational narrative strategies to address readers, demanding a re-negotiated response from them. Drawing upon and extending the observations of critics who emphasize the role of liberalism and its contradictory legacies for post-colonial <em>Bildungsroman</em>, my research highlights a radically ethical potential in unsettling reiterations of this long-standing narrative form. The narratives that I have chosen to examine—namely, U.S. Latino/a and Canadian diasporic second-generation coming-of-age stories and African child soldier narratives—reflect a broad geographical and linguistic range, drawing attention to constitutive relationality and various kinds of haunting to call upon a globally entangled sense of disappointment and responsibility in a profoundly critical register. These coming-of age stories signal the need to imagine alternative ethical and political frameworks for reconceptualising the way we think about knowledge, responsibility, and belonging in twenty-first century planetary relations. Even as they inevitably participate in the global market for stories of otherness and epistemological and/or material dispossession, these texts challenge generic and market expectations, troubling the reader’s easy consumption of them. The open-endedness and ambiguity in the indirect, yet insistent, rhetorical manoeuvres of these narratives urge us as readers to confront complicated questions about global solidarity if we are to respond ethically to global, national and transnational realities.</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

[pt] O REGIME INTERNACIONAL DA CRIANÇA-SOLDADO E SUA APLICAÇÃO: UM ESTUDO DE CASO DA ATUAÇÃO DA MONUC NA REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DO CONGO / [en] THE INTERNATIONAL REGIMEN OF CHILD-SOLDIERS AND ITS APPLICABILITY: A CASE STUDY OF MONUC S ATUATION IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

MAYRA MARCOLINO 10 December 2018 (has links)
[en] This dissertation examines the politics of protection to the child soldier in the context of the armed conflict in the Kivus Region, east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The investigation proposes itself to analyse in which way the norms, rules and treaties of protection of the child soldiers stablished in the international system are applied in the complexity and particularity of a local conflict. In light of the hypothesis that the politics elaborated in the international sphere can find obstacles to its effective local application due to historical, social, political geographical and economic factors, we investigate how this execution were operationalized in the program for Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) in the ONU’s peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The once and future Army : an organizational, political and social history of the Citizen Military Forces, 1947-1974

McCarthy, Dayton S., History, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 1997 (has links)
This thesis examines the Citizen Military Forces (CMF) from 1947 until it ceased to exist under that name with the release of the report of the Millar Inquiry in 1974. This thesis examines three broad areas: the organizational changes that the CMF adopted or had imposed upon it; the political decision-making surrounding the CMF; and a social analysis of the CMF which questions the viability and validity of a number of the CMF???s long held precepts. The thesis will show that the majority of circumstances and decisions surrounding the CMF were beyond its control. For example, the CMF could not change the prevailing military thought of the post-war period which emphasized increasingly the role of smaller, professional, readily-available armies. The first three chapters recount the CMF???s ???heyday??? in which the Army, assisted by National Service after 1950, was based around it and its influence at the highest levels was strongest. The next two chapters chronicle the background to Australia???s adoption of the ???Pentropic??? organization and the repercussions this had on the CMF. Chapters Six and Seven examine the consequences of the introduction of a second compulsory service scheme and the concomitant result which precluded the CMF from operational service in Vietnam. Chapters Eight and Nine deal with the Millar Inquiry, which offered the CMF a new hope, but in some regards, brought forth little beneficial gains for the CMF. The final chapters analyze some of the characteristics unique to the CMF, such as territorial affiliation, high turnover rates amongst the rank and file and the concept of the ???brilliant amateur???. This thesis concludes that, despite the mixed performance of the CMF, there is still a place for the citizen soldier in contemporary warfare, but far more consideration at the highest political and military levels must be given to the peculiar and difficult, but by no means insurmountable, problems citizen soldiering encounters in Australia.
