Bokenblom, Samuel, Ring, Albin January 2024 (has links)
In a fragmented media landscape, the Melody Festival (Melodifestivalen) is one of the few Swedish media productions that still gathers audiences for ritual media consumption. Despite its position as one of the largest media institutions in Swedish society, research regarding the event is limited and this bachelor study aims to counteract this. The aim of the study is to investigate what values and ideological assumptions about interpersonal relationships that are discursively constructed in the song lyrics performed at the Melody Festival. The study is based on critical discourse analysis, and Eva Illouz's sociological theories concerning relationships, as a theoretical framework. Every winning entry from every even year between 2002-2023 (a sample of 11 song lyrics) has been analyzed using critical discourse analysis. In line with previous research on pop music, the results of the study show how the most common type of relationship in the material is of a romantic nature. Love is frequently depicted metaphorically as an all-consuming force in accordance with Illouz. However, love as work (à la Illouz) is not represented in the material. The results also show how the private is prioritized over the societal where the relationship between “I” and “you” is the most prominent.

Sexist Language in the Popular Lyrics of the Seventies

Teague, Carolyn 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to analyze the language of the popular lyrics of the seventies to determine if sexism is used to communicate in various musical genres. Three manifestations of sexist language developed by the Sexism in Textbooks Committee of Women at Scott, Foresman have been used in this study. The lyrics analyzed include 100 lyrics selected from songwriter-singers noted as articulate musical artists of the seventies, 90 songs reaching the "Top Ten" charts (1970-1978), and the top 100 songs of 1978. Chapter I defines sexism and explains three manifestations of sexist language. Chapter II includes examples from seven talented lyricists which illustrate sexism. Chapter III presents an evaluation of sexism in the "Top Ten" lyrics (1970-1978). Chapter IV reveals changes in stereotypic language appearing in the 1978 top 100 lyrics. Chapter V offers summaries and reasons for the findings.

Šanson jako komplexní mluvní akt a jeho přeložitelnost / Chanson as a complex speech act and its translatability

Stehlíková, Aneta January 2013 (has links)
Title of the thesis: The chanson as a complex speech act and its translatability Keywords: chanson, translation, song lyrics, chansonnier, interpretation, acting, nonverbal communication, Aznavour, Bécaud, Piaf, Hegerová, Gott, Čeřovská, cabaret Abstract: The aim of the thesis is to describe the possibilities and the limits of translatability of chanson with regard to song lyrics and dramatic performance. The main contribution consists in determination of a relation between borrowed chansons and their French originals. The realization of the thesis is based on a research on the field of literary translation and acting on the one hand and on the analysis of song lyrics and dramatic performances on the other hand. The analyses in both cases concern three selected French chansons and Czech versions corresponding to them. The first part of the thesis defines the chanson and explains its historical development in the Czech territory. The theory of literary translation and lyrics translation is presented and applied to the translation of chanson in the second part. The third part deals with possibilities of a dramatic interpretation of chanson on the basis of the theory of acting. The last part brings a double analysis which concerns song lyrics and dramatic interpretation of chosen pairs of chanson.

Culture and sentiments of Irish American Civil War songs

Bateson, Catherine Victoria January 2018 (has links)
During the American Civil War, an approximate 200,000 Irish-born soldiers, and an even greater number of subsequent generation descended soldiers, fought for the Union and Confederate causes. Their experience, opinions, military actions and attitudes of their families were the subject of American Civil War songs, with songwriters penning numerous ballads about them. The conflict witnessed the mass production of wartime ballad culture, with over 11,000 pieces written and composed between 1861 and 1865 alone. An estimated 150 were by and about the Irish American wartime experience specifically. This thesis focuses on these Irish American Civil War songs and analyses the sentiments they expressed. Overall, the main topic written onto songsheet pages and in songbooks was the battlefield actions of Irish-born and descended soldiers. This study explores how military history was reported through song, following traditional oral practice patterns of using balladry to sing war reports. In particular, attention will be drawn to the proliferation of lyrical dedication and focus on specific Irish-dominated units such as the Union Army's Irish Brigade and 69th New York State Militia, and how their actions, along with other Irish soldiering units, came to dominate Irish American Civil War articulations and history. Within this lyrical attention the figures of Irish-born commanding officers, namely Generals Michael Corcoran and Thomas Francis Meagher, come to the fore. This study also analyses how their own wartime experiences and articulations corresponded with song lyrics. Beyond the battlefield focus, this thesis explores the way in which song lyrics sang about Irish loyalty and devotion to the American Union - and in a few examples Confederate nation - and particularly adopted symbols of the American nation, such as the Star Spangled Banner, as embodiments of the causes and ideals fought for by soldiers. Alongside this were lyrics that referred to symbols of Irish cultural heritage, language and a history of foreign military service. Irish identity can be seen on the surface of some songs, including references to Irish nationalism and the desire to gain Irish independence one day. Yet, as this thesis will argue, Irish American Civil War song lyrics reveal complicated support and sympathy for the Irish nationalist cause in the United States during the 1860s. Running through the songs of this study is a pervading sense and sentiment of American identity - that the Irish fighting and living through the war were stressing to society through song that they were committed to the United States as Americans first and foremost. In addition to assessing wartime views of Civil War politics and military actions, this thesis will also explore the way Irish song played a critical part in the formation of American musical culture, with traditional Irish music forming the foundation for American tunes, and blending Irish culture into the American wartime zeitgeist. This thesis will demonstrate the way in which Irish songs were written, published and disseminated through American society and crucially circulated beyond the confines of the Irish diaspora. Traditional and wartime Irish songs became a fundamental part of American culture because they were American cultural outputs. Thus this thesis will demonstrate the important evidential role Irish American Civil War songs play in singing an unexplored areas of mid-nineteenth century Irish American transnational history.

Andersson, Emelie, Timjan, Hofmann January 2015 (has links)
Hip hop has throughout the years been a male dominated music genre and industry but this has recently come to change, not least within the Swedish context. Today Swedish hip hop is largely characterized by its pronounced feminism, partly because of the development of the female collective Femtastic. The fact that women today have an at least equally clear role in the Swedish hip hop industry as men indicates that sexism, which has been a frequently reoccurring theme in male rap lyrics, has come to lose its popularity. We have, through the use of Edleys critical discourse psychology, examined how Swedish female rappers express gender and sexuality and how they position themselves and others with regard to these aspects, aspects that male rappers often have used to describe women. By using interpretative repertoires, subject positions, ideological dilemmas and Judith Butlers term subversivity, we have been able to distinguish certain patterns in the constructions of gender and sexuality. We have found that the artists frequently express themselves in ways that digresses from stereotypical norms of gender and sexuality and distinguished how they use linguistic resources as tools with which they, among other things, accentuate female strength, individual as well as collective.

Håkan, var du bättre förr? : En textanalytisk studie med fokus på utvalda texter av Håkan Hellström / Håkan, were you better in the past? : A text analysis study focusing on selected texts by the artist Håkan Hellström

Ringby, Anna January 2018 (has links)

The life we live is jettat, which is why many want to test. Jalla, come test, ra-ta-ta-ta from a Tesla”

Lundqvist, Nathalie, Jönsson, Olivia January 2020 (has links)
The gangsta rap has topped the Swedish music charts in recent years and the controversial message of the music genre has led people in the community to question what the gangsta rap message convey. The purpose of the study is to investigate how a normalization and encouragement of crime are characterized in the contemporary song texts, and how men and women are portrayed in connection with the power aspects of society. The method choice is a qualitative thematic and linguistic content analysis with the aim of examining the significance of the song texts in deph. The study has been conducted on the 24 songs that have been streamed the most number of times according to P3´s DigiLista since 2018. The result shows that the gangsta rap encourages and romanticizes crime through its choice of personal pronouns and semantics in the song lyrics. Women and men are portrayed in an unequal way, where women are portrayed as objectified as opposed to the hegemonic masculinity with which masculine men are equated. Power has been proven to be a dominant concept throughout the performance analysis and the power aspect has conveyed different viewpoints in each theme. The power that gangster rappers get through their coveted music may come to encourage criminal acts through their choice of words.

Att använda låttexter : En kvalitativ studie om låttexters funktion inom samhällskunskapsundervisning / To use song lyrics : A qualitative study regarding the function of song lyrics in social studies

Lindqvist, Jenny, Van Vuuren, Elik January 2021 (has links)
There is a constant struggle for teachers to find new methods that generate learning. Every student learns differently and not everyone benefits from the traditional learning methods that teachers have used for centuries. Therefore, teachers must now variate their teaching methods so that every student gets the same opportunity to learn. This study aims to explore the possibility to use song lyrics as a didactic tool to bring in a practical element in the subject of social studies. Furthermore, the purpose of this study is to see how the students experience this kind of practical element in a theoretical school subject. At last, this study is interested in finding out if this kind of didactic tool and teaching method is an effective way to generate learning. To answer these questions the study uses three qualitative methods - a lesson study, group interviews and a survey. Earlier research has found that is it positive to connect the teaching materials to something that the students can relate to since this can create interest and motivation. The use of song lyrics in this study hopes to use something familiar to the students and connect this to social studies. By analysing collected data using two scientific theories, we can conclude three things. First of all, song lyrics can be used to provide a clear and realistic connection to society. Secondly, the participating students overall seemed to enjoy using song lyrics as a didactic tool. Finally, the study can conclude that song lyrics can generate learning since it creates interest among the students.
