New stuff or nature's survival? : How socio-scientific issues are presented in chemistry textbooks for primary and secondary school

Ullström, Josefine, Holmgren, Vendela January 2021 (has links)

Redefining Maputo downtown : flood management through a sustainable landscape architecture intervention

Oosthuysen, Wessel Marthinus 03 January 2012 (has links)
“All countries are vulnerable to climate change and instability in weather patterns but the poorest countries and the poorest people within them are most vulnerable, being the most exposed and having the least means to adapt” (IMF and World Bank Development Committee, 2006). African cities, as other cities around the world, are prone to flooding within in urban areas. The increased flooding from climate change, could have seriously destabilising effects for Africa (Commission for Africa, 2005). Climate records shows that most of Africa warmed by approximately 0.7°C during the twentieth century (IPCC Working Group II, 2001). Future changes in rainfall will depend greatly on the influence of global warming. In addition, a United Nations World Water Report states that in the beginning of the twenty-first century, the Earth with its diverse and abundant life forms (including over six billion humans), is facing a serious water crisis. Water needs to be conserved in any way possible. (United Nations World Water Report, n.d.). This study aims to explore the role in which floodingin urban landscapes can be addressed, but simultaneously stored for future use. It argues that the negative element of flooding can rather be used, i.e the water could be conserved and used in the build environment, rather than inhibiting social, economic and ecological factors. The pilot project in this stage can at the same time, serve as an urban generator. An innovative solution (urban water park) is analysed and tested and serves as a possible outcome to address flooding problems within an African city (Maputo, Mozambique). Afrika, 2005). / Dissertation (ML(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Architecture / unrestricted

Eco-valorisation de la plante Kniphofia uvaria : de la plante à la galénique / Eco-valuation of the Kniphofia uvaria plant : from the plant to the galenic form

Duval, Johanna 14 November 2016 (has links)
Nowadays, green chemistry is a great challenge. It seeks innovation in the development of eco-efficient processes. The production of natural products from renewable materials by these new environmentally friendly processes is more and more used. The aim of this Ph.D thesis is to develop an eco-valuation strategy to extract, characterize, produce and impregnate natural products onto a cosmetic support using sub/supercritical fluids. Consequently, we used oleaginous plant seeds from Kniphofia uvaria as a plant model, which was selected for its interesting cosmetic properties such as antioxidant or anti-ageing. Firstly, the SFC-MS hyphenation with the APCI as an ionization source was developed to screen bioactive molecules; responsible of cosmetic properties. This coupling was performed by the hybrid combination of (U)HPLC/SFC-HRMS. Various optimizations in terms of the solvent make-up (nature and proportion), modulation with SFC and MS parameters were carried out in order to improve sensitivity and selectivity of lipid analysis. Secondly, an enrichment strategy to concentrate bioactive compounds in the final extract was developed by SFE and CPC. Thus, in SFE, experimental parameters (temperature, pressure, nature/proportion of the modifier in the CO2 fluid) were optimized while in CPC, the injection optimization was realized. Methods for the selective fractionation of anthraquinones and triglycerides were obtained in CPC and SFE. Finally, an on-line sub/supercritical extraction-impregnation process was developed to extract and for simultaneously impregnating anthraquinones onto a cosmetic silica. Development and optimization of this process was realized on a laboratory scale. Consequently, this study demonstrated the feasibility of this concept and it presents a great interest to provide natural products as a galenic form, which could be used in the cosmetic formulation.

Studying the Opportunities of Blockchain Implementations in Electronic Transactions compared to the eIDAS Regulations / Undersöka möjligheterna för blockchain implementationer i elektroniska transaktioner jämfört med eIDAS regulationen

Hansson, Hanna January 2022 (has links)
The electronic identification regulation, eIDAS, and its trusted service providers are currently based on technologies that have been used for decades. The eIDAS and many others in the security industry have shown interest in newer technologies such as distributed ledgers and blockchain. This research looks into the current eIDAS regulation, its plans for future work, and how the current trusted systems could benefit from introducing blockchain into the solutions. Looking at new technologies is of importance to move forward but also making solutions more secure for the user with for example Self-Sovereign Identity solutions. The research was conducted through a literature review followed by interviews. A number of themes were identified to answer the research question. The findings were that blockchain is a viable technology to use but only if used in the right cases. A better understanding and knowledge of the technology is needed for new implementation to succeed and should not be rushed due to the hype of blockchain technology. / Se bif. fil

Liten tuva stjälper ofta stort lass : Bakteriell kontamination över tid av operationsinstrument vid öppen neurokirurgi / A small tuft often overturns a big load : Bacterial contamination over time on surgical instruments used in open neurosurgery

Ekman, Jakob, Bernroth, Benjamin January 2016 (has links)
Totalt tio CFU registrerades under samtliga observationer. / Background: Post-operative surgical site infections (SSI) cause suffering for the afflicted patient and is a great cost for the patient, the health care system and society. Intra-operative contamination of surgical instruments is one of the sources of these infections. The operating room nurse is responsible for preventing infections. Purpose: The purpose of this pilot-study was to measure the degree of bacterial contamination over time on surgical instruments used in open neurosurgery as well as to observe specific sources of contamination during this time. Method: The design was a quantitative nonexperimental observational study. The data collection took place during autumn 2015 and consisted of the sampling of specific instruments used by the surgeon during surgery after preset elapsed operating times. Bacterial culturing on these instruments was then carried out at a laboratory according to a preset routine and the degree of contamination was measured by observing the amount of colony forming units (CFU). The results are presented as changes in CFU. Results: Five operations were observed and ten bacterial culturings were conducted on ten instruments. A total of ten CFU was registered during all observations. No significant increase in the number of CFU could be observed from one to two hours of elapsed surgery (P=0,156). The amount of door openings increased from 3,4 to 9,0 and the number of personnel in the operating room increased from 5,4 to 5,8. Conclusion: Despite the small number of observations included in this study the results indicate good aseptics and minimal bacterial contamination on the surgical instruments during the first two hours of surgery. Further research with longer observations, more observations and observations on other forms of surgery is needed.

Unknown Date (has links)

IT risk management : local authorities facing the digital risks

Février, Rémy 10 April 2012 (has links)
This doctoral thesis aims at answering a key question: what is the level of consideration given to Information Systems Security (ISS) by the French local authorities (LAs)? The latter are now facing new challenges that require an ever-increasing use of new technologies (e-government, e-democracy, dematerialization of call for tenders...). The under-researched territorial IT risk becomes a major issue in the sphere of public services and the protection of personal data. Theoretically based and constructed through successive professional positions, our theoretical model helps measure the actual level of inclusion of digital risk taking into account the respective influence of a set of characteristics of local authorities. A field survey was conducted with the close collaboration of representatives of LAs.While numerical risk requires a high level awareness by LA decision makers, it appears that they have a very imperfect knowledge of IT security related risks as well as of direct or indirect threats that may jeopardize their management systems. A potential solution lies with the definition of a specific public policy and with the implementation of appropriate procedures at the level of each community.

Hijazi, Hussein 25 November 2008 (has links) (PDF)

Novel Strategies For Real-Time Substructuring, Identification And Control Of Nonlinear Structural Dynamical Systems

Sajeeb, R 01 1900 (has links)
The advances in computational and experimental modeling in the area of structural mechanics have stimulated research in a class of hybrid problems that require both of these modeling capabilities to be combined to achieve certain objectives. Real-time substructure (RTS) testing, structural system identification (SSI) and active control techniques fall in the category of hybrid problems that need efficient tools in both computational and experimental phases for their successful implementation. RTS is a hybrid testing method, which aims to overcome the scaling problems associated with the conventional dynamic testing methods (such as shake table test, effective force test and pseudo dynamic test) by testing the critical part of the structure experimentally with minimum compromise on spatio-temporal scaling, while modeling the remaining part numerically. The problem of SSI constitutes an important component within the broader framework of problems of structural health monitoring where, based on the in-situ measurements on the loading and a subset of critical responses of the structure, the system parameters are estimated with a view to detecting damage/degradation. Active control techniques are employed to maintain the functionality of important structures, especially under extreme dynamic loading. The work reported in the present thesis contributes to the areas of RTS, SSI and active control of nonlinear systems, the main focus being the computational aspects, i.e., in developing numerical strategies to address some of the unsolved issues, although limited efforts have also been made to undertake laboratory experimental investigations in the area of nonlinear SSI. The thesis is organized into seven chapters and five appendices. The first chapter contains an overview of the state of the art techniques in dynamic testing, SSI and structural control. The topics covered include effective force test, pseudo dynamic test, RTS test, time and frequency domain methods of nonlinear system identification, dynamic state estimation techniques with emphasis on particle filters, Rao-Blackwellization, structural control methods, control algorithms and active control of nonlinear systems. The review identifies a set of open problems that are subsequently addressed, to an extent, in the thesis. Chapter 2 focuses on the development of a time domain coupling technique, involving combined computational and experimental modeling, for vibration analysis of structures built-up of linear/nonlinear substructures. The numerical and experimental substructures are allowed to interact in real-time. The equation of motion of the numerical substructure is integrated using a step-by-step procedure that is formulated in the state space. For systems with nonlinear substructures, a multi-step transversal linearization method is used to integrate the equations of motion; and, a multi-step extrapolation scheme, based on the reproducing kernel particle method, is employed to handle the time delays that arise while accounting for the interaction between the substructures. Numerical illustrations on a few low dimensional vibrating structures are presented and these examples are fashioned after problems of seismic qualification testing of engineering structures using RTS testing techniques. The concept of substructuring is extended in Chapter 3 for implementing Rao-Blackwellization, a technique of combining particle filters with analytical computation through Kalman filters, for state and parameter estimations of a class of nonlinear dynamical systems with additive Gaussian process/observation noises. The strategy is based on decomposing the system to be estimated into mutually coupled linear and nonlinear substructures and then putting in place a rational framework to account for coupling between the substructures. While particle filters are applied to the nonlinear substructures, estimation of linear substructures proceeds using a bank of Kalman filters. Numerical illustrations for state/parameter estimations of a few linear and nonlinear oscillators with noise in both the process and measurements are provided to demonstrate the potential of the Rao-Blackwellized particle filter (RBPF) with substructuring. In Chapter 4, the concept of Rao-Blackwellization is extended to handle more general nonlinear systems, using two different schemes of linearization. A semi-analytical filter and a conditionally linearized filter, within the framework of Monte Carlo simulations, are proposed for state and parameter estimations of nonlinear dynamical systems with additively Gaussian process/observation noises. The first filter uses a local linearization of the nonlinear drift fields in the process/observation equations based on explicit Ito-Taylor expansions to transform the given nonlinear system into a family of locally linearized systems. Using the most recent observation, conditionally Gaussian posterior density functions of the linearized systems are analytically obtained through the Kalman filter. In the second filter, the marginalized posterior distribution of an appropriately chosen subset of the state vector is obtained using a particle filter. Samples of these marginalized states are then used to construct a family of conditionally linearized system of equations to obtain the posterior distribution of the states using a bank of Kalman filters. The potential of the proposed filters in state/parameter estimations is demonstrated through numerical illustrations on a few nonlinear oscillators. The problem of active control of nonlinear structural dynamical systems, in the presence of both process and measurement noises, is considered in Chapter 5. The focus of the study is on the exploitability of particle filters for state estimation in feedback control algorithms for nonlinear structures, when a limited number of noisy output measurements are available. The control design is done using the state dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) method. The Bayesian bootstrap filter and another based on sequential importance sampling are employed for state estimation. Numerical illustrations are provided for a few typically nonlinear oscillators of interest in structural engineering. The experimental validation of the RBPF using substructuring (developed in Chapter 3) and the conditionally linearized Monte Carlo filter (developed in Chapter 4), for parameter estimation, is reported in Chapter 6. Measured data available through laboratory experiments on simple building frame models subjected to harmonic base motions is processed using the proposed algorithms to identify the unknown parameters of the model. A brief summary of the contributions made in this thesis, together with a few suggestions for future research, are presented in Chapter 7. Appendix A provides an account of the multi-step transversal linearization method. The derivation of the reproducing kernel shape functions are presented in Appendix B. Appendix C provides the details of the stochastic Taylor expansion and derivation of the covariance structure of Gaussian MSI-s. The performance of a particle filtering algorithm (bootstrap filter) and Kalman filter in the state estimation of a linear system is provided in Appendix D and Appendix E contains the theoretical details of the Rao-Blackwellized particle filter.
