Lapierre, Lucie 10 1900 (has links)
In a society where it is quite normal to spend much time sitting, we study from an environmental design standpoint, the integration of physical activity for recreation and transportation activities and everyday places. This integration is relatively little studied in its entirety because it requires taking into consideration the factors of physical and social environment, both types of physical activity, the various places visited daily and it puts in that many challenges of methodology. This overview of the phenomenon is needed because more and more researches have reported associations between specific dimensions of the built environment and specific behaviours, and these results are occasionally contradictory. To understand the phenomenon, we set the eco environmental model and have adapted to better represent the population mobility. We have therefore chosen a unit of analysis including the residential area, the area of workplace and travel between the two. Thus, using multiple data sources, we characterized the community as restricting or facilitating physical activity and people living there as being sufficiently active or not. We then highlighted the important elements of interviews based on this pairing. Among the themes explored in the interview, characteristics of the physical environment that are important, the impact of the social environment at work and at home, the logic underlying the errands, etc. Key findings of this research show that users of the commuter trains are sufficiently active although they live in the suburbs. In this sense, our sample is more active than the provincial average. We note that the influence of the environment is obvious but under the principle of communicating vessels, that is to say that the residential pole and employment center has both a contribution that is often complementary. The influence of the social environment is through the significant role of relatives rather than by their geographical proximity while environmental design has a huge contribution to make the journey enjoyable and thereby give an added value to the time required to use them. The purpose of environments, the type of walking and the expectations of the users must guide the design. Consequently, there is not one formula or one single prescription to increase the walkability of the community; that being said, the characterization tools must be tailored. In conclusion, ideas for future developments following this research are proposed.

Yrjänä, Hanna January 2016 (has links)

A crise da cidade em jogo: o futebol na contramão em ruas da Penha / The crisis of the city at stake: football in the opposite direction in streets of Penha

Gonçalves, Glauco Roberto 28 June 2011 (has links)
It was through the street football played in the Penha district, São Paulo, that this research attempted to understand the crisis of the city and the ludic in the urbanization of society. The comprehension of this problematic was adressed in two stages, the first one intended to reinterpret the history of brazilian football with emphasis on improvised football, frequently called pelada. In the second stage, the focus was the psychogeographic analysis of childhood and street use in the city. This required the study of everyday life in the metropolis linked to the end of neighborhood life and the car supremacy on the streets.

A bibliographical research becomes the basic compilation of selected surveys: Henri Lefebvre who points out that the social construction occurs whenever there is a demand; Le Goff and his analysis about medieval cities; Sandra Pesavento in her perception that a city is an objective reality, holder of history and memory; Milton Santos and his view on the urban space; Lewis Mumford tracing the history of cities; among many other references that are compiled in this assessment. Thus, discerning a city becomes essential for understanding overlaps of the forms and functions which the urban spaces attain, as well as the role of the city in this process. In order to discuss the main subject of this essay closed horizontal residential condominiums an initial time report was conceived involving medieval and industrial cities. Also, the opportunity to identify the role of city walls surrounding medieval towns, as well as the origin of the modern outskirts. These two images wall and suburb are references for a deeper glimpse about horizontal residential condominiums. In relation to the point of view given to urban areas and the condominiums, there is a proposal of a brief history of the city of Goiânia. Thus, the recognition of a city growth process leads to the notion of new forms and functions the city attains. Therefore, it is necessary to notice that the appearance of these horizontal condominiums is causing a new perspective about the outskirts of the modern cities. Without any intention of overtiring this theme, this paper becomes an invitation for questioning about initiatives that are taken in the cities, as well as envisaging new ideas, new aboding options and familiarity. So, first and foremost, the attempts are presented for the addition of a new prospection to the rhetorical, depictions, dreams, shadows and misgivings related to the city of Goiânia and its new guise.

Um estudo do processo de configuração do espaço penhence / Penha: a study about the configuration of the penhense space

Jesus, Edson Penha de 31 January 2007 (has links)
The present work is a study about the configuration of the penhense space from, over all, the consideration of social practices that marked the history of this portion of the São Paulo city. The agreement of this problematic pass through analysis of the historical continuities and discontinuities and the neighborhood relations, while reference of neighborhood life, that had given to Penha some originality in relation to others neighborhood of São Paulo. The period enclosed on the study extends since the formation of the religious patrimony, establishment of the Nossa Senhora da Penha parish, until the metropolization, moment of large rupture marked for the end of the neighborhood life in the locality. The study point out three moments: the constitution of Penha while rural neighborhood; the constitution of Penha while suburb; and the constitution of Penha while neighborhood of the São Paulo city. The comprehension of the space transformations on the neighborhood of Penha and all set described above have only accomplished if we have in mind the city and its processes (industrialization and urbanization) while founders of the urban way of living. With this we also believe to be contributing for the understanding of the urban development of the city of São Paulo.

jansson, anna January 2008 (has links)

The emerging Swedish suburbs of the 1960- 1970s started out as a utopian vision: a new city for the modern people. Media presented a different view and emphasized the inhuman livingenvironment and the social problems of the suburbs. Nationwide there have been local attempts to avoid this negative publicity by adjusting identified suburban problems. Due to medial presentation the suburbs are still associated with segregation, criminality and social problems. The presentation of suburbs and immigrants affects not only the process of integration and the general public idea of integration processes, but also the individual perception of themselves and their living. Media have opened on to a collective discrimination of the neighborhood and its inhabitants. This essay aim to contribute to the understanding of how identities arise and are maintained when people are associated with certain geographical spaces, that is suburbs. The majority of the Swedish study of suburban discrimination and segregation takes place in the periphery off ocused on Andersberg, a suburb in a smaller city called Halmstad. It is a typical high-rise, concrete suburb with a high density of immigrants and unemployment. This essay has studied the power structures in the language regarding Andersberg, to discover the discriminating construction of suburban otherness. A postcolonial perspective illustrates how the perception of the suburb and its inhabitants is constructed as in the Swedish society. Discrimination and segregation is a result of the general public perception of the suburban inhabitants as criminal, uncivilized and patriarchal.

the big cities. Norra Botkyrkas undre värld : En inblick i antihjältarnas vardag

Bajric, Edin January 2007 (has links)

The purpose with this study was to describe and analyse the daily activities of a criminal group in a southern suburb of Stockholm, Norra Botkyrka, and their attitude to drugs, the police, crimes in general, accomplices and their plans for the future. The study is a combination of different qualitative methods that is built on unobtrusive methods and interviews that was carried out during winter in 2006 and spring in 2007 and six interviews. My interest to carry out this study was grounded on my several years of experience as a prison and probation officer in the prison. I chose to “live” with a group of criminals and participated in some of their social activities.

The respondents that I chose to call “anti-heroes” proudly tell me about their criminal lifestyle that characterizes of violence, drugs, crimes and conflict where this people show no regret. The readers of this study will be able to do an insight into the criminals’ daily activities. I choose to describe the respondents tough and “tragically” growth and their attitude to the drugs, conflicts, the police, accomplices, women, future and their spot in society. The results of this study will show that the majority of the respondents had a bad growth and comes from torn families, where the most of them began early with drugs and crimes. The organisation of the gang gives a shifting view from what appears to be an organised and structured gang to a disorderly gang with a lot of conflicts. The respondents are so hardly anchored to their criminal lifestyle that an adjustment to normal life, for the majority of them, is next to impossible.

The Future of Food in Suburbia

Khalid, Sarah 15 October 2012 (has links)
This thesis addresses resilience for the future of Canadian suburbs, through the lens of buildings and food, particularly against the backdrop of peak oil and climate change. Food access is an integral part of how a city sustains itself. There is growing evidence that the current global food system, the one that feeds many cities today, is “broken” or at least at risk. It has, in the past, produced an abundance of food. It has also brought along a number of unintended consequences, has neglected to embed equitable distribution patterns, and when faced with peak oil and climate change, risks some form of collapse. This thesis focuses on the food distribution question. It suggests a new food system model for the City of Mississauga that couples the region's local systems with global networks in a set of local/global relationships. The research portion of this work provides an overview of the dynamic historical and present relationship between food and city infrastructure, touches on the issues facing suburban resiliency today, and investigates the challenges facing the food retail industry. It then draws lessons from large-scale typologies of urban agriculture being proposed in recent years by architects and urban designers. This work, specifically at the design stage, identifies the suburban supermarket as a local catalyst for transformation. Today, the City of Mississauga is not food secure – that is, it does not rely on a safe, adequate, sustainable, or appropriate food supply. This thesis investigates how local and sustainable food systems can be integrated into the urban fabric and systems sustaining suburbs today. It further seeks to build on existing conditions, and answer how the suburban big-box typology, preferred by retailers, can contribute to food security.
