Sustainability Strategies of Barber Salons

Mevo, Kouassi Gilles 01 January 2019 (has links)
Many barber salons and other small businesses in the United States fail to succeed beyond the first 5 years. The factors responsible for the low survival rate of salons may include the limited training and education levels mandated by state certification requirements. The purpose of this multiple case study was to identify business strategies successful barber salon owners use to overcome the business management and staffing challenges associated with a small pool of skilled barbers and the high turnover in a low wage profession. The theory of transformational leadership served as the conceptual framework. The data collection included interviews of 3 successful barber salon owners who met the study participation eligibility criteria of licensed, registered, operating a salon business in the Indiana region for more than 5 years, and over the minimum age of 25 years. The 4 themes emerging from the interview data analysis were (a) barber salon operating structures, (b) salon leadership and managerial strategies, (c) licensed barber skill enhancement, and (d) salon operating strategies effectiveness and sustainability. The data analysis also involved the triangulation of the primary research against secondary data from the Small Business Administration and barber industry reports. The expertise and knowledge shared by the interviewees could serve the quest of barber salon businesses in the Indiana region to overcome the profitability and financial sustainability challenges of this industry. The study findings may potentially contribute to positive social change by improving the economic standing and welfare of barber salon owners and professionals in the community.

A qualitative study about how companies plan and control their environmental sustainability strategies, objectives and performance measures and how these are communicated within the company

Johansson, Frida, Olsson, Isabell January 2021 (has links)
Background and problem: With an increased concern for environmental issues, companies are forced to adapt by trying to reduce their negative environmental impact. This can be achieved by developing and implementing appropriate sustainability strategies. Sustainability work has become an increasingly important strategic tool that can result in a competitive advantage. Previous research has examined why companies work with sustainability. However, there are few completed studies that practically consider how companies manage their environmental sustainability work. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to contribute with an understanding of how the management of environmental sustainability work is designed and implemented in practice. This is done by examining how companies work with environmental sustainability strategies, objectives and performance measures by focusing on planning and control. The study intends to analyze how the strategies, objectives and measures are communicated within all parts of the organization. Method: The qualitative study has been made by a smaller multiple case study represented by six different companies using semi-structured interviews. The research approach is deductive with inductive elements. Furthermore, the interviews were conducted in order to create an understanding of how companies manage their environmental sustainability work. Conclusion: It can be stated that there is no clear solution on how companies should work with sustainability issues. Furthermore, sustainability is seen as a long-term process which is becoming more integrated into companies' traditional financial management systems rather than being seen as an individual management system. The management's commitment determines whether the employees are inspired and involved in the sustainability work. The top management's commitment reflects how the sustainability work is implemented and plays a significant role in the management towards environmental sustainability.

An analysis of food company’s strategies in relation to the sustainability challenges within the food industry : A study based on companies within meat and dairy production

Hagberg, Sara, Lokat, Maria January 2021 (has links)
Today, companies' sustainability work is considered business-critical, and more demands are arising within the area. The requirements are based on environmental factors, where the declining biodiversity and scarce resources make it crucial for companies to find new solutions for both resource efficiency and products. Currently, customers and consumers are putting most pressure on companies, but policies, laws and instruments are also starting to tighten. One industry that is facing major changes and challenges is the food industry, where vegan alternatives are emerging that outcompete the traditional companies. The report examines how food companies in meat and dairy production meet society's sustainability challenges. It studies the companies' sustainability work, what strengths and weaknesses they have, and what their opportunities are considering a long-term survival. In the report, three different categories have been identified, with different attributes and driving forces, to provide guidelines for firms in their future sustainability work. The study shows that many of the traditional companies are not always aware about the vitality of working with a long-term perspective when it comes to sustainability; Thus, missing opportunities to strengthen their competitiveness as well as possible revenue streams and hence miss their chances for long-term survival. Due to the lack of a system perspective and open innovation, companies are working reactively towards the market instead of actively trying to influence it. By working proactively in line with research and daring to work more with open innovation and collaborations, companies instead have an opportunity to steer the market in a favourable direction for both society and for themselves. This way they can also increase the probability of capturing the opportunities that arise and taking advantage of the revenue-generating cascades that are made possible through various collaborations throughout the value chain and outside of it. However, this is based on the companies understanding their role also in systems outside their own value chain, how the environment is affecting them but also how the firms affect the environment themselves. Those firms who have begun to understand the importance of working long-term with sustainability, and thus created more incentives than just financial ones, do not risk prioritize short-term financial gain over their sustainability work. This is believed to benefit the company’s likelihood of dealing with sustainability challenges, since it makes them more self-sufficient, thus increasing their chance to survival long term on the upcoming market.

[pt] O IMPACTO DAS ESTRATÉGIAS DE SUSTENTABILIDADE AMBIENTAL NO DESEMPENHO DE EXPORTAÇÃO DA AGROINDÚSTRIA BRASILEIRA: INFLUÊNCIA DAS CAPACIDADES ORGANIZACIONAIS E AMBIENTE INSTITUCIONAL / [en] THE IMPACT OF SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIES ON THE EXPORT PERFORMANCE OF BRAZILIAN AGROINDUSTRY: INFLUENCE OF ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITIES AND INSTITUTIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL

CAMILA CARVALHO COSTA 29 November 2019 (has links)
[en] More and more the corporations are being charged for Environmental Sustainability performance, especially in developed markets and this indicator is essential for reaching the global warning control targets .Today Brazil has a significant share of the global food trade and has a leading hole taking into consideration the alert for climate changes and food security issues that are becoming relevant due to global population growth. Bringing even more focus on this subject, the country has one of the largest biodiversity of the planet and holds the greatest share of the Amazon, the largest rainforest in the world and responsible for part of the global climate balance, while the agroindustry is responsible for the consumption of more than 70 percent of Brazilian water resources, occupies around 21 percent of the national territory and accounts for 74 percent of the country s greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, rooted in Resource Based- View and Institutional Theory, a model was constructed for the purpose of analyzing the impact of organizational factors (dynamic capacities) and the institutional environment (society, regulation, and competition) on environmental sustainability strategies and how these strategies impact export performance of Brazilian agricultural companies. In the literature there are few empirical studies focused on analyzing the relationships between these constructs and none of them within the scope of the Brazilian agroindustry, besides that, an additional contribution was sought when analyzing how the level of maturity in environmental sustainability of the countries influences the relation between the sustainability strategies and export performance. For the model s test, a data survey was conducted with managers of 143 exporting companies from the Brazilian agroindustry, through an online questionnaire and the Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to estimate parameters. The empirical results corroborate some of the hypotheses presented, revealing the significance of the main relationship of the study (sustainability strategies and export performance) and distinguishes between the organizational factors and the external environment that most impact on the adoption of these strategies, besides to present the leadership engagement in the sustainability as the main internal factor of the adoption of this type of strategy, as well as the perceived pressure of foreign society and competition as the main external factors. However, the main theoretical contribution of the study is derived from the analysis of the moderation factor. The results show that the relationship between environmental sustainability strategies and export performance was more significant in the group of companies that export to countries with a greater maturity in the area of environmental sustainability, than in the group of companies that export to least mature countries in this theme.

Licence to Talk : Sustainability Managers and their Managerial Realities within the Corporate Sustainability Paradox

El hajjari Borg, Mounia, Sundberg, Elin January 2021 (has links)
While sustainability-dedicated managers and related titles represent a profession that has hardly existed for more than a decade, it is not surprising that the field of research concentrating on these professionals is in itself relatively new. With an increasing demand for corporations to take their social and environmental responsibility, and a corporate sustainability characterized by tension and paradox, we found it of importance to explore the role and entanglements of these professionals. By analysing 17 in-depth interviews with sustainability-dedicated professionals from the private sector in Sweden, our interpretation is that sustainability managers hold the function of selling sustainability, with talk as their main weapon. Expressly, in the intersection between business-case logics and sustainability logics, sustainability managers have to, above all, make a convincing case for sustainability, inwards and outwards. Therefore, they draw dynamically on different narratives which we conceptualise in three roles: the chameleon, the pragmatic, and the nagging manager. Through these roles, we intend to capture the fluidity with which the managers relate and engage with sustainability, and hence we do not mean to ossify a role’s dynamics within a single, static or stereotypical category. We discuss these findings and concepts to the background of previous studies and existing literature.
