AIDS and the Politics of Disability in the 1980s

Nancy E Brown (7012733) 16 October 2019 (has links)
<p>This dissertation examines the political response of gay and lesbian organizations to the HIV/AIDS crisis through the lens of disability. When the National Gay Task Force (NGTF) formed in the 1970s, their early political efforts confronted the stigma and exclusion associated with the American Psychiatric Association’s disabling label. In the 1980s, gay and lesbian organizations faced a deadly epidemic—AIDS. The high cost of medical care left people with AIDS destitute. NGTF pressed the Social Security Administration to modify their disability criteria to recognize AIDS and ARC as qualifying disabilities. Fear and homophobia left people with AIDS vulnerable to employment, housing and medical discrimination as well as social ostracism. Gay Men’s Health Crisis and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund countered AIDS discrimination in New York through collaborative efforts with city and state agencies. Disability rights codes and laws offered people with AIDS some protection against discrimination. The Task Force, the Gay Rights National Lobby and the Disability Rights Defense & Education Fund joined the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights in 1982. While the Conference did not engage in the campaign for gay and lesbian rights in the 1980s, their extended legislative crusade for the Civil Rights Restoration Act would bring AIDS onto the battlefield. This study finds these various antecedents came into play during the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to the extent that gay and lesbian organizations could describe the ADA as an “AIDS bill” in terms of both their political participation and the text protecting people with contagious diseases who were not a threat.<br></p>

\'Cada verso é uma semente no deserto do meu peito\': exílio, resistência e conexões transnacionais na canção engajada latino-americana (anos 1970) / \"Cada verso é uma semente no deserto do meu peito\": exile, resistance and transnational connections in Latin American protest song (1970s)

Gomes, Caio de Souza 20 February 2019 (has links)
The main aim of this research is to show that Latin American integration projects by music, built during the 1960s and early 1970s, were not destroyed by the military dictatorships that settled in Latin America by this time. Although the new regimes had the clear objective of annihilating any experience of political art, trying to destroy the networks of committed art that had been formed in the pre-coup periods, the artists ended up finding strategies of survival in the new context. Those who stayed in their countries went underground. But most of the Latin American committed musicians in the 1970s went to the exile. Their stay in the host countries was largely determined by the articulation of solidarity networks, which tried to support the exiles and also organize actions of resistance and dictatorships violence reports. These movements of solidarity found in the disc production a path of political action; one of the main aim of this work is to reflect on this \"musical network of solidarity\", taking the discs as sources and objects of analysis, in order to understand that the mobilization of the resistance has been based on the transmission of political speeches through songs. In addition to the albums produced by solidarity, another important aim of this work is to reflect on the musical work developed in exile by important artists linked to the nueva canción. The awareness that the exile experience would not be as brief as they had imagined at first made the musicians seek space in the cultural industry of the host countries in order to resume their phonographic works, which began to reflect on the experience of exile and possible ways of resistance to authoritarianism.

The Praxis of Theatre Directing: An Investigation of the Relationship Between Directorial Paradigms and Radical Group Theatre in Australia Since 1975

Foster, Michael E., n/a January 2004 (has links)
The thesis investigates the field of Theatre practice variously referred to as alternative, non-mainstream, avant-garde, community or fringe theatre. I have suggested the term 'Radical Group Theatre' - a term which, I believe, best encompasses the sector formerly represented by this diverse body of theatre practice. I focus on the relationship between theoretical and practical paradigms, and debates surrounding them; theatre making processes; and directorial practice in a theatre form which has emerged as a distinctive set of characteristics, ideological frameworks and practices in the Australian context. The work is strongly informed by the perspectives and practices of a range of major contributors to the field. It notes the inadequacy of conventional analytics and established understandings of the theory/practice nexus for exploring Radical Group Theatre, and establishes an alternate set of frameworks. These enable fresh engagement with the development and current praxis of an important theatre form which has not previously been considered as a whole field yet has taken particularly exciting directions in Australia over the past three decades. Methodology and objectives: An important aspect of the study is the way in which the research methodology parallels the practice under investigation. That is, the practice of Radical Group Theatre in Australia mirrors the 'Reflective Reflexive Loop' which I propose as the pre-eminent principle of the praxis. The methodology has developed out of my Masters degree research which was an interrogation of my directorial practice in the field of Youth/Community theatre, 1976-1989. I was further interested to analyse the field of group theatre to determine whether common key principles identified as characteristics of the form in the earlier study constituted the basis for an analytical model of Radical Group Theatre praxis. The investigation for this thesis began with a project designed to synthesise the essential qualities of directorial practice: the qualities of the good director, the major influences on practice, and the expectations participants have regarding the function of the director. The preliminary findings formed the basis for a comparative study which sought answers to the key questions as they apply to a pre-professional radical theatre setting - university student theatre. This project gave birth to the focus questions of the study which established the theoretical and methodological frames for the thesis.

Uppror och solidaritet : 1960- och 1970-talets politiska uttryck i den svenska affischkonsten / Insurrection and solidarity : the political expression in Swedish poster art during the 1960s and 1970s

Gustafsson, Sofia January 2013 (has links)

These dwellings were originally classified (ARA?JO, 2010a) in five categories defined according to the form of their building shells and to their prevailing construction techniques: (1) Brazilian modern legacy (considered as truly Brazilian modern style); (2) Paulista architecture (that refers to the modern production of S?o Paulo, Brazil, from the 1950s through the 1970s); (3) experiences of rationalization and prefabrication ; (4) experiences of adaptation to the climate (referring to a design strongly influenced by the hot and humid climate of North-eastern Brazil); and (5) hybrid (to account for a kind of stylistic hybridism that includes formal attributes, which evoke our colonial past). This study aims to determine, through the analyses of nineteen cases that represent each category, whether this taxonomy corresponds to distinct modes of spatial configuration. This research therefore proposes an approach to the classification of domestic architecture based on topological properties. The dwellings spatial organization was represented, quantified and analyzed, their spatial properties explored in consonance with one another and with the literature. Results pointed out that there is no evidence of a reciprocal relationship between the formal look of the built shells and their respective spatial structures / Assumindo que espa?o e inv?lucro constru?do s?o duas dimens?es distintas da arquitetura - ainda que indissoci?veis e interdependentes -, este estudo enfoca, ? luz da Teoria da L?gica Social do Espa?o (HILLIER; HANSON, 1984), as propriedades intr?nsecas atrav?s das quais o espa?o dom?stico foi estruturado em uma amostra de habita??es unifamiliares constru?das em Jo?o Pessoa (PB) nos anos 1970 - quando o vocabul?rio moderno ainda predominava no Brasil, embora compartilhando espa?o na cena urbana com outras tend?ncias arquitet?nicas -, a fim de investigar regularidades ou diverg?ncias subjacentes ? sua concep??o.

Artistas mulheres na ditadura brasileira: os casos de Wanda Pimentel e Teresinha Soares / Women artists under the Brazilian dictatorship: the cases of Wanda Pimentel and Teresinha Soares

Patricia Branco Cornish 26 June 2018 (has links)
This study investigates the artistic productions of Wanda Pimentel and Teresinha Soares in the mid - 1960s and early 1970s, with the objective of analysing the issue of gender and the construction of female subjectivity. The research seeks to analyse the aesthetic relations of the works of Pimentel and Soares in light of the influences of feminist theories that migrated from the United States to Brazil in the late 1960s. This highlights the theoretical relations between gender issues and the artistic practices of the Brazilian vanguard. In addition, this research looks at the circulation of the works of Pimentel and Soares given that both were part of the Brazilian art circuit in collective exhibitions and biennials in this period. This context of the circulation of art allows a critical view of the return of the work of these artists to international exhibitions in the last three years; a return driven by the revisionist policies of museums on issues of gender and artistic production in countries outside the canonical cultural centres. The study expands the academic knowledge about artistic productions made by women in the 1960s and 1970s, who adopted a feminist critique without reference to social movements, contributing to the debate about the supposed marginalisation of women in the Brazilian art circuit during the dictatorship military.

O eixo sul experimental: conceitualismos e contracultura nos cenários artísticos de Curitiba e Porto Alegre, anos 1970 / The experimental Southern axis: conceptualisms and counterculture in the art scene of Curitiba and Porto Alegre, 1970s

Luise Boeno Malmaceda 18 May 2018 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to map the networks of artists, intellectuals and events responsible, in the 1970s, for introducing discussions and languages of contemporary art in the Southern axis of Brazil. As such, it focuses on the regions largest urban centers, the capitals Curitiba (PR) and Porto Alegre (RS), whose artistic fields are better structured and longer-lived. Especially through archival research and interviews, the sociocultural and political specificities that shaped the conditions for the emergence of a field of artistic freedom, of rupture from canons, are analyzed from the so-called anos de chumbo of the dictatorial regime to the beginning of redemocratization. In the case studies, greater attention is given to collective and experimental actions linked to conceptualisms in visual arts which sought to break from regionalist traditions and discourses, expanding the state boundaries conceived by artists involved with the countercultural thinking, in vogue since the early 1960.

\'Ator sem consciência é bobo da corte\': frentismo cultural e realismo crítico na dramaturgia brasileira de matriz comunista, 1973-1979 / \'Ator sem consciência é bobo da corte\': cultural front and critical realism in the brazilian dramaturgy of communist matrix, 1973-1979

Mariana Rodrigues Rosell 27 April 2018 (has links)
This work analyzes four brazilian plays from the 1970s: Um grito parado no ar (Gianfrancesco Guarnieri, 1973), Rasga coração (Oduvaldo Vianna Filho, 1974), Gota dágua (Chico Buarque e Paulo Pontes, 1975) and O último carro (João das Neves, 1964/1967-1976). Written by different playwrights, these plays are representative of a theatre project constituted in the 1970s, marked by attempts to retake brazilian stages with a dramaturgy whose main characteristics are the valorization of the word as the structuring axis of the plays, the investment in the search for a formal synthesis according to the historical matter to be represented and the reaffirmation of commitment to political engagement. The analysis of the plays allowed to identify the strong presence of elements of the communist political culture and the proximity of its discourse with the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB)s political project, which allowed to characterize them as dramaturgy of communist matrix. The attempts to retake the stage took place through a evaluation of theatrical practice in which the playwrights reaffirmed some of the assumptions they had had in the horizon of their dramaturgical writing until then, while attempting to abandon others. Trying to put aside the idealism with which they had read the Brazilian reality and the revolutionary teleology with which they had represented the popular characters, these playwrights did not abandon the defense of a strategy of resistance to the military regime through a front for redemocratization. But the front strategy appears reconfigured, with its focus shifting from a polyclassist front to a front among members of the same social class whose strategies for political action diverged. The search for a formal synthesis suggests the constitution of an \"aesthetic front\" in which different theoretical matrices were conjugated, evidencing the importance of the formal research for the engaged theater. However, despite these convergent characteristics, the plays express tensions among themselves and expose the impasses and contradictions that marked the modernization of Brazil in the 1970s.

La figure du sujet lyrique dans la poésie contemporaine : Jacques Dupin, Philippe Jaccottet et Jacques Réda / The figure of the lyric subject in contemporary poetry : Jacques Dupin, Philippe Jaccottet and Jacques Réda

Nakayama, Shintarô 10 March 2016 (has links)
Our study aims to examine the figures of the lyric subject in the poetry of Jacques Dupin (1927- 2012), Philippe Jaccottet (1924-) and Jacques Réda (1928-), three major poet of the postwar whose poetic work contributed to the evolution of contemporary lyric poetry.Without neglecting the anterior and posterior work of these poets, our study will focus mainly on the works of the 1960s and 1970s. At that time, in fact, the lyric was taken in a critical situation without precedent because of the advent of the structuralism and the “textualism” proclaimed by the avant-garde. In response to textualism of 1960s and 1970s, Dupin, Jaccottet and Réda continue an obstinate search of lyricism. Our study doesn’t aim to develop global and universal criteria to define the universal characteristics of "lyric poetry" as a literary genre, nor to develop a philosophical reflection on the subject or the En-soi. Through the analysis of the figures of lyric subject, we will study the characteristics of each of our poets, as well as patterns of lyric poetry during the difficult period. The notion of "lyric subject" will serve as a parameter in order to clarify the singularity and the historical nature of the poems, and those of the poetic peculiar to each writer.Traditionally, lyric poetry is often associated with the emphasis or sentimentality. The poetry of Dupin, Jaccottet and Reda struggle to free themselves from the traditional lyricism based on the egocentricity. Lyric poetry is no more a genre that expresses the feelings and subjectivity of the poet. Our poets are looking for a new form of lyrical poetry, which is suitable for the times. The impersonality, we often find in their poetic, is associated with the production of a new form of subjectivity, far from the metaphysics of subjectivity. The refusal of some form of subjectivity coexists with the search for a singular word and the new figure of lyric subject.
