A Qualitative Study of Research Librarians Competencies and Strategies related to Open Science

Larsson, Helena January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study is through the research librarians, to shed light on their perceptions, competencies and strategies related to open science at the Swedish research libraries. The transition to open science is ongoing nationally and globally and research librarians at research libraries at universities have extensive knowledge while constantly facing major challenges in the field which develops their competencies and strategies in open science. A valuable aspect in order to develop open science for the future is studying the individuals behind. Semi-structured interviews with five research librarians at two main research libraries at two stateowned Swedish universities were conducted, and the interviews were analyzed thematically. The theory of fenomenology is applied to the study for the purpose of throughly examine every individual – every research librarians perceptions, competencies and strategies related to open science. The analysis maps the empirical material and a selection of previous ones research on librarians and open science to put the study in a relevant context. Also the empirical material helps to identify the possibilities for the development of open science for the future. The study identifies several areas of interest. The results show that Swedish research librarians perceive open science as comprehensive, with many different challenges, unclear and transparent – overall open science is complex. Research librarians acquire skills in open science, primarily when they collaborate, read as well as when they apply open science. The open science strategies that are particularly prominent are partly the work with research support, partly the strategic work. The prerequisite for the development of open science is the human aspect in the life world of research librarians. Findings reveal that research librarians mainly educate themselves in open science. The prerequisite for selfeducation and to develop strategies is their driving force. The study also show that Swedish research librarians have a potential to influence the development of open science. It is important to highlight that open science needs to be supported and developed within the research community so that open science becomes a natural part of contemporary and future research culture. In the unstable situation of the world in times of permacrisis, it is even more urgent to share research. Open science can provide opportunities to change human rights such as equality, democracy, social development, climate and health for the better – naionally and globally. This is a two-year master´s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Knowledge management practices and the role of an academic library in a changing information environment : the case of the Metropolitan college of the New York

Mavodza, Judith 20 January 2011 (has links)
Academic library services have now significantly developed and are applying some knowledge management (KM) principles in the provision of library services. KM is about enhancing the use of organizational knowledge through sound practices of KM and organizational learning. KM practices encompass the capture and/ or acquisition of knowledge, its retention and organization, its dissemination and re-use, and responsiveness to the new knowledge. The focus of this research was on KM principles and practices that may be in place in the Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) library. The objective was to find out how knowledge was identified, captured, organized and retained in order to enhance performance and improve the quality of service in the library. There is uncertainty about whether the use of KM principles and tools could partly solve the library‟s approach to improving its quality of service to its community in the modern information environment. KM has been implemented in commercial and business environments towards operational advantages and financial gains and its survival principles and tools may help the library to improve performance and fulfil its mandate. A mixed methods research methodology encompassing a questionnaire, observation, interviews, and use of institutional documents was used with an action research design for generating new knowledge and understanding of library concerns. The findings of this study indicate that KM concepts were not universally understood at MCNY, and that collaboration of librarians and faculty in creating an educational environment meaningful and relevant for the study programmes offered by the College was essential. The MCNY library practices were not deliberately based on KM but the study established that they were amenable to KM practice. It was making efforts to share know-how so as to reduce duplication of effort, relying on library staff to identify, integrate, acquire, organize internal and external knowledge for the benefit of the whole College. The recommendation was to perform a knowledge inventory. This could help develop appropriate institution-wide policies and practices for proper and well organized methods of integrating work processes, collaborating and sharing (including the efficient use of Web 2.0 platforms), and developing an enabling institutional culture. / Information Science / D.Litt. et Phil. 組織變革對公共圖書館館員工作滿足之影響--以台灣省基隆市、新竹市、台中市、嘉義市、台南市公共圖書館館員為研究對象 / The Influence on the Public Librarians' Sense of Job Satisfaction by Organization Change--A Study on the Public Librarians Working in Keelung, Hsien-Ju, Taichung, Cha-Yi, Tainan Cities

Bee, Grace Unknown Date (has links)
Public departments are set up by part of the rights given up by the people, in order for the government to seek and create benefits for its citizens. When it comes to cultural heritage and propagation of knowledge, public libraries were established at all levels of administrative systems, so there are places available to the people to encourage reading, and form their habit of lifetime learning, thus to uplift the nation’s competitiveness. A famous remark from The Book of Changes: “Change, is the only thing constant”. Cultural growth is cyclic, in order to survive, organization has to pay attention constantly to its reformation. According to Leavitt, organization reformation is classified into 3 types: organizational reformation, personnel reformation, and technical reformation, these 3 are interrelated, but the essential is whether personnel, employees are willing to stay to strive with the organization, job satisfaction is fundamental. This is the motive of this study. Except Tainan Municipal Library, all the public libraries in different counties and cities of Taiwan Province were combined and became library section since the Cultural Center has established and built in the 80th. (1) Thus 2 levels were downgraded on their administrative systems, so they have to strive for budget and administrative resources with all sections of the Center. (2) 90th is the era for the Bureau of Culture, this was also the time that faced with technical reformation: including the pressure such in the using and teaching of computer, advanced information network took shape of electronic database, as the same time, to strengthen the comprehension of foreign languages. (3) In personnel reformation, the role that the librarians played has changed from a Manager to a Servant, the working concept is differed, at the same time, its organizational culture is being reshaped; Librarians did not receive the attention and appropriate trainings they deserved. Studies show that, there would be throes or chaos during the processes of reformation, the organization shall experience different resistances and thrusts in different phases of reformation, whether the reformation would succeed or not, employees are its essential factor. As time goes by, the public librarians’ current working situation, their job satisfaction, future demand are the subjects of the study, and study shows: I. Librarians facing the changes in the levels of administrative positions resulted form organizational reformation: librarians deemed this cannot be changed by the non-local public servants, therefore, no significant dissatisfaction is shown toward this matter. However, some public librarians that municipal libraries can be established, so that the operation, levels of job function and administrative positions of public libraries can be commensurate. There is dissatisfaction with the wages; job satisfaction cannot be met in terms of the ranking of duties, but not those librarians that actual serve the readers, they are satisfied with their wages; this is its difference. When there is job vacancy with higher ranking of duties available, most probably the librarians would leave their jobs. The encouraging factors of public libraries to their librarians are insufficient, this serves as a warning signal. II. Librarians pay much attention to the technical reformation, as further studies influence job satisfaction. Operation and marketing of libraries, computer skills and foreign languages are the subjects planned for training and further studies, these subjects covered both professional and intellectual knowledge. Librarians with strong recognition of self-learning, they expected to participate in the researches and studies held by the counseling and guidance system. As times keep on changing and transforming, “pressure” has become a common disease of civilization, librarians have proposed courses concerning spiritual growth, pressure relief, and emotional management, which are quite different from the training demands in the past. III. Librarians expect themselves to serve readers with more enthusiasm, this calls on to pay more attention on the management concept of “customer-orientation” in the personnel reformation, to combine with the resources of the communities, schools or the studios for literatures and histories, so that these resources can be reused and shared. To win the attentions from the administrative system (the superior) with one’s job performance. There would be higher job satisfaction as one’s performance receives reward and appreciation. The following issues have found from this study, which required further discussion: I. Librarians shall build up their professional images and authoritativeness, counseling and guidance system has to pay more attention on the related trainings. II. Librarians shall keep on expressing their opinions, so as to reduce the “Matthews Effect” in digital information. III. It’s the time to solicit readers through internet, public librarians need to extend outwardly, to involve in the training of volunteers for the communities, and more active marketing strategies would be required, in order to promote services (all kinds of information). IV. New missions and objectives of services shall be added to cope with the demand of the era, as well as the pressure of succession and heritage: (I) The pressure to collect documentations, and digitalization, training of information personnel is needed. (II) The guidance and suggestions proposed to the subordinate public libraries are not binding; further probing is required for the guiding system established. (III) More pressure concerning the rules and regulations for purchasing, how to build up the concept of “New knowledge arrive the library instantly is of the same important as the administrative procedures”, this requires recognition and assistance from the administrative department. V. The pressure of “Customer-oriented service”, librarians should take training courses related to “The right ways to communicate with customers”, and be capable to relieve their pressures. VI. Librarians should be both professional and enthusiastic, and keen to the society. Based on the aforementioned findings and discussion, follow-up study suggest that: I. The object of study can be expanded to include jurisdictional and regional librarians, thus their differences shall be revealed perfectly. II. “Administrative corporation” moved by the Executive Yuen for social welfare institutions, the following aspects should be further observed and studied in the follow-up study: whether is policy is conflict with the purpose in establishing public libraries, the mental distress it caused to the librarians, increase/lessen of readers’ rights and benefits, an even its effect to the “Affirmation action” III. Connection of E-government and local public libraries: a place nearest and most convenient for the public – public libraries, are their hardware facilities and instructing capability enable them to become the supplier of automatic wireless network? This requires further observations and studies in the follow-up study.

Allnutt, Vanessa 02 1900 (has links)
The objective of this qualitative study is to understand the attitudes of Quebec librarians with respect to intellectual freedom and censorship in the public library arena. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 11 librarians, including six directors. These staff were involved in varying degrees in the development process of their library collections and/or in the management of challenges. Their comments were subjected to a rigorous thematic analysis. Similar to previous studies which have focused on this topic, this research showcases the difference between participants’ attitudes regarding intellectual freedom as a concept, and intellectual freedom as an activity. In other words, the participants were in favor of freedom of expression, while at the same time being supportive, under certain circumstances, of restrictive measures. The analysis of the results shows that librarians, while proponents of intellectual freedom, serve primarly as guardians of societal consensus, continually drawing and redrawing the boundary between individual values and societal values. This research ultimately shows that Quebec librarians are less actively engaged than their Canadian and U.S. counterparts in efforts to defend and promote intellectual freedom. Analysis of the data leads to the hypothesis that this weak commitment is intimately related to cultural variables unique to Quebec. The contemporary absence of religious pressure groups and the tardy development of public libraries in Quebec have in fact been identified as two factors tied to the history of the province influencing the professional work environment and the behavior of librarians in the struggle for the defense and promotion of intellectual freedom.

Introduction: the practice for the search of information which underpin the clinical practice and research is increasingly present in the lives of health professionals and the use of information sources specialized has become indispensable. In this context, highlights the professional librarian for their skills and the sense of the multidisciplinary work, which allows them to act as a link with the health professional and the best available evidence they have in their arsenal of technical knowledge for the search and retrieval of relevant information, and this is their opportunity with evidence-based medicine. Objective: to evaluate the scientific production of the post-graduate researchers in Orthopedics and Traumatology and the contribution of the librarian in the scientific communication process, based on the qualitative and quantitative assessment of published articles, in face of the requirements established in the evaluation system of the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Level (CAPES). Methodology: the articles published were searched with the authorship associated to the post-graduation program in Orthopedics and Traumatology of FMUSP, from 2012 to 2014. Discarded the editorial, events and letters to the editors, has resulted in a corpus of 157 articles. To evaluate the quality of the content of the articles, was applied the evaluation protocol created by Amatuzzi and for the determination of the level of evidence was used the classification proposed by the Evidence-Based Medicine Center of Oxford and adapted by the journal Acta Ortopedica Brasileira. For the bibliometric analysis a four-year citation window of the articles indexed in the Scopus database was considered and as a classification of the journals we used Qualis for the years 2010 to 2012. We analyzed both the total number of articles and the mean number of citations in the mentioned citation window, according to the following variables: level of evidence and Qualis stratum. Results: researchers usually publish in co-authorship, and there is a clear preference for Therapeutic Studies, being a large part of the publications in level IV of evidence, prioritizing national journals classified in the Qualis B3 stratum. Despite the low frequency of publications of level I evidence, its average citation proved to be significant. Similarly, level I Diagnostic and Anatomical Studies, for the most part, were also published in lower Qualis stratum, however, they received more citations. On the methodological quality of the published articles, the Therapeutic Studies demonstrated a greater amount of \"YES\" responses in the evaluation protocol used, however, they were published in journals with lower Qualis stratum (B4). Regarding the relation between the impact of the articles with the levels of evidence and levels of the journals, it was found that the studies classified level I of evidence are the most cited, and the studies on anatomy, of basic sciences, stand out in the averages of citations. It is also realized that the average citation has most strong relation with the Qualis stratum of that with the levels of evidence. Conclusions and final considerations: the researchers of the postgraduate in Orthopedics and Traumatology must emphasize the practice of Evidence-Based Medicine and insert it in the process of scientific communication, seeking enhancement of their research, and thereby raising their level of evidence, thus improving their performance in the exercise of evaluation undertaken by CAPES. The professional relationship of the librarian in health science and researchers should be narrowed, establishing a joint effort in the pursuit of the quality of publications in Orthopedics and Traumatology.

The practice of the librarian-archivist is here understood as a social and historical construction, permeated by contradictions between capital and labor. Considering that education is historically influenced by changes occurring in the world of work, according to Marxian and Marxist conceptions, it is pertinent to research on how labor relationships librarian professionals develop. Field research was conducted in the ten IFG campuses, with survey on empirical data, through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and analysis of documents. The data were analyzed according to the principles of dialectical and historical materialism, mainly based on Marx, Antunes, Manacorda Frigotto, Hirata and Nogueira, with the purpose of articulating the object of research and its multiple historical, political, economic, social and cultural determinants. According to data analyzed, based on the theoretical frameworks adopted, we have understood that overcoming the existing limits, so as the librarian-archivists may reach decent working conditions, concerns the formation of a political identity, able to reveal the processes of alienation of capitalist mode of production, based on the understanding that omnilateral education of workmen and workwomen is the way towards some humanization of men and women. We have gotten to the conclusion that new technologies concerning professional practice of librarian-archivists at IFG are, at once, essential and contradictory: although they are crucial to facilitate work, they are also essential to promote extraction of relative surplus value, though not recognized by the professionals involved. The librarian-archivist plays a multifunctional role so as to perform institutional policies which diversify his/her practice with a variety of technologies, complexity of courses and users who wish having more autonomy on what concerns the use of services and, consequently, control over the librarian practice. Such tools also serve as a mechanism for flow control of production and quality of services performed by librarian-archivists. Besides, we have come across three differences in the performance of men and women: (1) in the way men and women deal with new technologies; (2) double shift performed by women, conciliating professional and domestic life, fact that happens at a lesser extent among men and (3) women are more interested in permanent qualification so as to deal with new technologies in their professional practice.

Engelkenmeier, Ute 24 May 2018 (has links)
The aim of this work is to unfold the image of libraries and librarians on German television. In the theoretical part, the topics library and librarian are outlined cursory, as well as a brief description of the current state of research. In the empirical part, a content analysis of television broadcasts follows, which looks at broadcasts from the years 2015 and 2016. The outgoing research question of how libraries and librarians are portrayed in contemporary television broadcasts will be examined using the method of standardized content analysis. In addition to quantitative analytical methods, methods of qualitative analysis are also used. The results show a quite differentiated picture of libraries and librarians according to fictional genres and non-fictional formats. Overall, the picture of libraries is neutral to rather positive, and the image of the librarians is predominantly positive in the underlying broadcasts.

As the increasing popularity of Internet, personal computers, and the evolution of information communication technology (ICTs), students' learning styles has also gradually changed for a variety of needs for knowledge and learning. Knowledge building, as an important concept, describes what a learning community needs to accomplish in order to create knowledge. It also refers to the process of creating new cognitive artifacts based on the common goals, group member discussions, and synthesis of ideas within community. Nevertheless, during the learning process of Knowledge building, there are some problems raised while guiding students to keep their in-depth discussion. In this study, we attempt to find out effective methodologies based on the assistance of library support, to promote learners’ participation, learning achievement and information literacy skills. First, this study introduces a way in which librarians participate in students’ learning process as tutor. Second, the research was conducted by quasi-experiment design; by which an on-line Knowledge Forum for students’ knowledge building learning environment is lunched. Discussion, learning activities and learning materials are delivered through Knowledge Forum. Researchers ask students choose one of four topics (Digital divide, Group dynamic, Attitudes and behavior change, Online persona) to discuss on Knowledge Forum. Students were asked to adopt concept mapping to construct their mind-map and knowledge flow in class. In addition, their learning performance was evaluated based on the process of knowledge mapping (3 times), the content of discussions, tasks, reports and grades. Their works of concept map were analyzed by UCINET, visualizing students’ mind changing, how they organized their knowledge, and to identify the positive effects on students’ performance. Moreover, the study also adopts various data gathering methodologies, such as questionnaires as well as the interaction records between librarians and students for overall understanding the Knowledge construction process. The results showed that librarians’ involvement in learning activities do help students’ improvement in knowledge constructing level, keeping their reflective process in-depth. The data also showed that students using concept maps in the knowledge building learning process as a sound way to assist their tasks accomplishment. This research suggests, in the future, there could be more successful collaboration, such as Knowledge building, among librarians, students, and teachers in different types of educational scenarios. Both educators and students will not only understand the importance of the Knowledge construction for better learning performance but also aware librarians as well as their service as an indispensable role in better education setting.
