Kvinna, chef, bibliotekarie. Triss i stereotyper?Öström, Jenny January 2013 (has links)
Public libraries are mainly employing women and have female managers. According to theories based upon so-cial construction we create our roles together in our society. The role of a manager has for a long time been viewed as the role of a man. The objective of my thesis is to gain knowledge on how a few women that work as managers in public libraries perceive and describe their roles. A parallel aim is to let a few future librarians de-scribe their managers and their own views on leadership, with a focus on gender issues. My questions are the following, how do the women construct their roles as managers of public libraries?, how do the female students describe the role as a female manager of a public library, and their own managers?, can stereotype views and attributes be distinguished in my informants tales on leadership and gender? The starting point of this thesis is theories of social construction of Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann, the thought that we shape our world through social interaction, mainly through our language. The theories of Yvonne Hirdman, regarding gender power structure, offers the political backdrop for my thesis. Alice Eagly has re-searched around leader stereotypes, leadership styles and gender. From her and her peers I take with me theories that claim that the leader stereotype is gendered male. The material I have used to answer my questions are interviews with ten informants, all of them women working at public libraries, five of them managers and five students. I have conducted structured interviews with open questions that I have then looked at by means of a method where different factors are intertwined, mainly language, social situations, political factors and theory. All these then used to interpret the empirical evidence. The basis of the method is interpretation and reflection.I found that my informants construe an image of the role as a woman and a manager of a public library as a complex role that does not fall into one unambiguous gender stereotype. They describe their one manager roles and their managers with attributes and characteristics that in recent research has been assigned to both genders. I could nevertheless identify the use of strategies that according to Eagly et al is used by women in manager roles to prevent them from suffering negative criticism or other consequences solely because of the combination of their gender and position.

The objective of this qualitative study is to understand the attitudes of Quebec librarians with respect to intellectual freedom and censorship in the public library arena. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 11 librarians, including six directors. These staff were involved in varying degrees in the development process of their library collections and/or in the management of challenges. Their comments were subjected to a rigorous thematic analysis.
Similar to previous studies which have focused on this topic, this research showcases the difference between participants’ attitudes regarding intellectual freedom as a concept, and intellectual freedom as an activity. In other words, the participants were in favor of freedom of expression, while at the same time being supportive, under certain circumstances, of restrictive measures. The analysis of the results shows that librarians, while proponents of intellectual freedom, serve primarly as guardians of societal consensus, continually drawing and redrawing the boundary between individual values and societal values.
This research ultimately shows that Quebec librarians are less actively engaged than their Canadian and U.S. counterparts in efforts to defend and promote intellectual freedom. Analysis of the data leads to the hypothesis that this weak commitment is intimately related to cultural variables unique to Quebec. The contemporary absence of religious pressure groups and the tardy development of public libraries in Quebec have in fact been identified as two factors tied to the history of the province influencing the professional work environment and the behavior of librarians in the struggle for the defense and promotion of intellectual freedom.

In this dissertation, I sought an approximation of Library and Information Science with Cultural Studies in Education. Through textual analysis of the discursive gender Thanks in theses and dissertations, I wanted identify the representations of the performance of libraries and/or university librarians by postgraduate students. To conduct this analysis, I selected the thanks of theses and dissertations in Post- Graduate in Education, Medical Sciences and Computing of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, representing three areas of knowledge, this is, Humanities, Science Health, and Exact Science respectively. I restrict the study to two distinct periods, 1985-1989 and 2005-2009, being the first on the initial implantation of automation in the Library System of UFRGS and second, when it was already complete automation and the internet was already democratized in Brasil. This choice is explained by the search for conducting a comparative analysis. I analyzed 667 theses and dissertations in the Post-Graduate in Education, 610 in the Post-Graduate in Medical Sciences and 390 in the Post-Graduate in Computing, totaling 1.667 documents. Libraries and/or university librarians were mentioned in 95 theses and dissertations, representing 6% of the universe analyzed. As analytical results, I found that: a) the space of Thanks, as discursive genre, is a locus where there is a representation of the performance of libraries and/or university librarians, despite the reduced incidence found in the quantitative survey; b) there are discernible trends in reducing this mention when comparing the two periods and indicate some probable causes for this reduction, such as the closure of libraries in times of strikes , reducing staff from libraries due to retirements of librarians without replacement, since the federal government suspended for a long period, public procurement in the universities, and the fact that students and researchers need not attend the libraries to effect their research and can do them directly from their homes and offices, through to the internet; c) in the acknowledgments are specified some personal and professional attributes related to the performance of university librarians; and d) thanks existing characterized as positive and evaluative in relation to the performance of these professionals. I presented some more interesting aspects shown by thanks and, in conclusion, do some final considerations regarding possible consequences of this study for the Library and Information Science.

empírico do estudo. Assim, o objetivo é avaliar a contribuição e atuação do
A amostra é
ABSTRACT
The role of the librarian in the development of information skills of college students is
constituted as the starting point for this research. We wanted to understand how is
the contribution and role of the librarian in the development of information literacy of
undergraduate students from the State University of Feira de Santana - UEFS
empirical study environment. Thus, the objective is to evaluate the contribution and
role of the reference librarian in the development of information skills of
undergraduate students, observing the practices carried out by these librarians and
can promote the development of information literacy, the barriers that imply that
development and the information skills demonstrated by undergraduate students
during their academic training. The research is characterized as descriptive, adopting
the case study method as from qualitative and quantitative approaches and with the
research subject librarians and graduate students of UEFS. The sample is composed
of librarians who work in the university library reference or teach the training of users,
totaling seven (7) subjects; and 120 (one hundred and twenty) active undergraduate
research fellows in 2014. The data collection instrument for the two samples is the
use of questionnaires. The results indicate that the actions undertaken by librarians
don’t develop completely the information skills of students. User training offered
stands out by stimulating the graduating search and location information through
online catalogs and databases, featuring an instrumental training. However, skills for
recognition of information needs, evaluation and use of information don’t appear
among the objectives described by librarians for training, and aren’t identified as
skills promoted in the university library UEFS. Students assess the most developed
competence is the search for information, same ability fostered by librarians.
However, they demonstrate skills for evaluation and use of information, as the stock
market condition need these skills in scientific production being encouraged to
develop these skills in this area. The university is the environment where students
need of informations for their studies and researches. Therefore, it is expected that
they demonstrate skills determined to locate, access, and use of information. The
university library is the locus to foster these skills, since it has the sources of
information to support courses. the university library We conclude that needs to
reassess its actions with a view to plan systematic and targeted activities to promote
fully in the development of information skills in undergraduate students. So, it is
important to have an integration between leaders, teachers and librarians in planning
actions to promote these skills in college.

Condições de acesso à informação no contexto do polo de apoio presencial da Universidade Aberta do Brasil / Conditions for access to information in the contexto of the support site at the Open University of BrazilVale, Helena Cristina Pimentel do 02 October 2015 (has links)
The Open University of Brazil1 has been studied repeatedly by researchers. However, it can be assumed that regarding the work of the information professional – the librarian – and its insertion on the multidisciplinary team, the subject has been insufficiently debated under the view of the members of Public Institution of Higher Degree (IPES). This research deals with librarian role in the context of the Support Site at the UAB. The present work aims on investigating whether there exist libraries, which information access services are offered to students of the Supporting Sites of the UAB and whether there are librarians acting in conformity with the UAB system proposition as well following the Quality Standards of the Distance Learning and the evaluation tools of the Ministry of Education. The specific goals are to identify which information access services are being offered, from which Libraries, to the UAB students and also to determine how the librarian is performing at the Support Sites of the UAB. It was necessary, initially, to broaden the knowledge about the Distance Learning (EAD), the UAB and the legislation pertinent to this educational modality in Brazil in order to gain a better understanding and pursue the research goals, relying on the Support Sites of the UAB. This is a research of documental nature, also exploratory and descriptive following a quanti-qualitative approach and intends to collect data from the libraries at the Support Sites, based on the information provided by the Sites’ Coordinators randomly selected. An online questionnaire was made available and the data were analyzed and interpreted considering the purpose of the Support Sites of the UAB randomly selected. The results have shown that the libraries at the Support Sites still need to comply to the Distance Learning model presently implemented in the country for the Distance Learning and therefore do not fulfill the students’ needs. The results made clear that it is necessary to implement public measures both on a county and state levels, in order to maintain and operate the libraries in conformity to the present legislation. The study proposes improvements to conform the Sites’ libraries to the students using the Distance Learning offered by the IPES.

Knowledge management practices and the role of an academic library in a changing information environment : the case of the Metropolitan college of the New YorkMavodza, Judith 20 January 2011 (has links)
Academic library services have now significantly developed and are applying some knowledge management (KM) principles in the provision of library services. KM is about enhancing the use of organizational knowledge through sound practices of KM and organizational learning. KM practices encompass the capture and/ or acquisition of knowledge, its retention and organization, its dissemination and re-use, and responsiveness to the new knowledge.
The focus of this research was on KM principles and practices that may be in place in the Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) library. The objective was to find out how knowledge was identified, captured, organized and retained in order to enhance performance and improve the quality of service in the library. There is uncertainty about whether the use of KM principles and tools could partly solve the library‟s approach to improving its quality of service to its community in the modern information environment. KM has been implemented in commercial and business environments towards operational advantages and financial gains and its survival principles and tools may help the library to improve performance and fulfil its mandate.
A mixed methods research methodology encompassing a questionnaire, observation, interviews, and use of institutional documents was used with an action research design for generating new knowledge and understanding of library concerns. The findings of this study indicate that KM concepts were not universally understood at MCNY, and that collaboration of librarians and faculty in creating an educational environment meaningful and relevant for the study programmes offered by the College was essential. The MCNY library practices were not deliberately based on KM but the study established that they were amenable to KM practice. It was making efforts to share know-how so as to reduce duplication of effort, relying on library staff to identify, integrate, acquire, organize internal and external knowledge for the benefit of the whole College. The recommendation was to perform a knowledge inventory. This could help develop appropriate institution-wide policies and practices for proper and well organized methods of integrating work processes, collaborating and sharing (including the efficient use of Web 2.0 platforms), and developing an enabling institutional culture. / Information Science / D.Litt. et Phil.
