Motiv násilí v povídkách Silviny Ocampové / The motif of violence in short stories of Silvina Ocampo

Koňaříková, Kateřina January 2020 (has links)
(in English): The aim of this work is to analyse selected short stories of the Argentinian writer Silvina Ocampo, which combines the element of violence, cruelty and crime. The work is focused on the original elements of fantastic, which are often referred to as "fantastic everyday life" and puts it in connection with the motive of violence and the presence of crime. In the introduction, it summarizes the author's work and outlines the concept of modern fantasy and its difference from the traditional form. It briefly introduces the concepts of violence and cruelty from the perspective of literature, philosophy and psychology. The short stories selected for analysis are based on the short story sets Viaje olvidado, Autobiografía de Irene, La furia and Las invitadas. A detailed analysis of short stories aims to examine the motive for violence in relation to fantasy and childhood elements. Sharing the Light: Feminine Power in Tudor and Stuart Comedy

Tanner, Jane Hinkle 05 1900 (has links)
Studies of the English Renaissance reveal a patriarchal structure that informed its politics and its literature; and the drama especially demonstrates a patriarchal response to what society perceived to be the problem of women's efforts to grow beyond the traditional medieval view of "good" women as chaste, silent, and obedient. Thirteen comedies, whose creation spans roughly the same time frame as the pamphlet wars of the so-called "woman controversy," from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-seventeenth centuries, feature women who have no public power, but who find opportunities for varying degrees of power in the private or domestic setting.

Maskulint kontra feminint ledarskap : Beskriver manliga ledare i kvinnodominerade branscher sin ledarstil som feminin?

Isak, Diana, Hassan, Kawsar Abdullahi January 2020 (has links)
This study aims to investigate whether male leaders in women-dominated industries describe their leadership as masculine or feminine in accordance with the writers own designed model “Masculine leadership versus feminine leadership”. The model is based on previous research. Furthermore if there are other explanatory models for the leaders description. This study also answers whether male leaders in women-dominated branches seem to adopt a feminine leadership or stick to the typical leadership attached to male leadership. A qualitative approach has been applied throughout the study to create an in-depth understanding of the topic with a total of six male respondents who participated in a semi-structured interview. Historically, and from the theoretical point of view, it is most common for men to exercise a leadership style of masculine leadership. This study concluded that four out of six respondents have leadership styles that are consistent with the typical leadership applied to male leaders and that two respondents describe themselves as adopting a feminine leadership style.

Sabah, Damiana, Mala Said, Leylan January 2020 (has links)
The issue of honor-related violence and repression contributed to a lively debate in Swedish politics in the late 1990's, after the honor killings of Sara in year 1996 and Pela in year 1992. The government has emphasized that collaboration between various actors, authorities and non-profit organizations are very important factors for sucess in preventing violence in close relationships. The purpose of the study is to investigate from a gender perspective the regional cooperation in Västmanland County regarding the work on honor-related violence and opression. The issue leads us to ask the following questions; What are the notions of masculinity and femininity that exist in this regional collaboration? Which obstacles identified by various actors in the work against honor-related violence or a gender perspective? What possible implementation efforts are identified by the actors? The method for this study is based on a qualitative research interview. Where we primarily seek an understanding of the world from the interviewer's point of view and experience, and that the interviewee is allowed to express themselves in their own words. The results and analysis show that together with confirmed theories and previous research it requires increased knowledge about boys and men's vulnerability, as well as men's and gender norms that exist together with unconscious notions. There is also a need for clearer collaboration routines with practical method support and financial resources. Where these two factors go hand in hand to understand the problem, and to prevent honor-related violence and oppression. It is not possible to exclude one or the other, as each aspect complements each other and the measure for effective improvement.

Seeing Double : Rhythm, Domesticity, and the Uncanny in Shirley Jackson’s "The Renegade"

Wramsby, Emma January 2022 (has links)
By using the concept of forms in this analysis of “The Renegade,” postwar domestic life is analyzed for the uncanny. By locating repetitions in domestic life, between characters, and in speech, situations are identified where the uncanny moves into the domestic. As a result, the perception of reality of the protagonist, Mrs. Walpole, is damaged, reiterating the impossibility of sanity in a postwar housewife’s domestic life.

"Pero tenemos diez dedos" : El albur mexicano visto desde un enfoque de género / "But we have ten fingers" : A Gender Perspective on the Practice of Mexican Albur

Lundqvist, Isa January 2021 (has links)
Albur is a linguistic practice largely restricted to Mexican identity and language use, constituting verbal duels of sexual double entendres. The current thesis seeks to explore how albur relates to gender, ranging from its prehispanic conception to the present day, focusing on the nature and possibility of involvement of non-male participants. To that end, literature on albur is revised, such as Johansson (2006), Lavertue (1998), Martínez García & Erdösová (2020) and Durán González (2012), as well as works exploring Mexican identity, including Paz ([1950]1996), Szasz (1998), Lagarde ([1990]2005) and Domínguez Ruvalcaba (2013). A pragmatic and sociolinguistic analysis of the practice is made on the foundations of linguistic theories regarding humor, sociolinguistic factors and feminine language use, including but not limited to; The General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) developed by Attardo & Raskin (1991); sociolinguistic variety by Silva-Corvalán & Enrique-Arias (2017); the work of Diaz-Campos (2014) in regard to language, age, gender and socioeconomic status; and the finds of Alvarado Ortega concerning impoliteness and failed humor in conversations between men and women. Finally, the thesis also presents the results and analysis of a new quantitative study focused on how young Mexican university students view albur and gender relations in the present day. Almost all participants self-report understanding the discourse of albur, and people of all gender identities report practicing it. The degree of understanding and use is slightly lower in women/people of non-male gender identities, which can be explained by a lack of tradition and the negative sociolinguistic value of albur. Compared to male participants, other participants are to a greater extent viewed as a strange element; regarding positive and negative attitudes there is no strong difference towards the two. It is concluded that, today, albur should not be considered a phenomenon restricted to men, and that the inclusion of non-male participants can develop, enrich, and add humoristic value to the tradition.

“Cookie Mom-ster,” “Mom in Chief,” and “Sugar Mommy” : [de-] constructing ideal femininty of Presidential candidate wives

Quandt, Lindsay Katherine 05 August 2016 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / A 2004 New York Times’ article regarding the role of potential First Ladies at political conventions wrote, “The public will someday accept a fully independent first lady, Ms. Gibbons predicted, 'I don't see how we can go backwards.’'' (Purnick, 2004) That isn’t to say, however, we have continued moving forward. Perpetuating the trend that began two decades ago, in 2012 both Ann Romney and Michelle Obama delivered speeches at the Republic National Convention (RNC) and Democratic National Convention (DNC) respectively. Prompting a continued study of the first lady include not only Michelle Obama’s self-titled “Mom-in-Chief” speech or the ever present role of fashion and the First Lady, but also her permanent role as the candidate’s feminine counterpart and its close management demand examination. To be sure, this thesis comes at a time of significant importance, with Hillary Clinton vying for the 2016 Democratic Presidential nomination. I agree with past scholars that presidential spouses, as part of the presidential institution, have ushered in a level of public power not previously possible for women (Anderson, Campbell, Jamieson, Sheeler, et al). However, the power of the first lady is constrained by feminine expectations that prevent the emergence of a fully independent first lady. We should question the limitations of the spousal role and challenge the discourses that create those limitations, as they hinder the realization of a fully independent first lady. Since 1992, nearly every spouse has given a public address at the presidential nominating convention, with all candidate wives from 2000-2012 taking part. The emergence of this campaign trend has prompted communication scholars to call for the expansion of research surrounding these speeches (Brown, 2012). Scholars have previously noted that first lady campaign discourse provides a sandbox in which our country experiments with various levels of first lady independence (Parry-Giles, 1996, Campbell, 1998, Anderson, 2002). That is to say, how the wives consistently talk about themselves, their husbands and the country, as well as how the media reports on the potential first lady during coverage of convention oratory, sheds light on the national tone of feminine ideologies. Therefore, I contend that a genre exists governing first lady convention speeches which, along with the mediated discourses surrounding these speeches, constructs and reinforces the ideal femininity of the First Lady. As a result, the hegemonic masculinity of the presidency is further reified with important consequences for our ability to accept an independent first lady which makes it more difficult to accept a woman president. This thesis examines the dual role of the feminine ideal of US first ladies and the masculinity of the presidency. Examining the generic constraints of 20 years of presidential candidate wives convention speeches and the associated media coverage will uncover dominant themes that aim to vilify certain wives—for their speech style and content—and celebrate others. By assessing what points of struggle we witness in these discourses, we note opportunities where first ladies and potential first ladies challenge these generic constraints and have the potential to reveal shifts and expansions in the discourses. The result may lead to a new understanding of gender in relation to the presidency.
