Alchimie picturale des vies ordinaires, du récit de vie à l'hystérie du tableau / Pictoral alchemy of ordinary lives, from biographical narrative to hysterical painting

Toute cette recherche se concentre sur le portrait en peinture comme possibilité de la rencontre, de moments d’amitié. Il s’agit d’en analyser les enjeux en utilisant la philosophie et la psychanalyse comme outils théoriques. Comprendre combien cette pratique de corps-à-corps, de présence à présence s’inscrit dans le temps, le déploie, le relate. La rencontre, tout comme ma pratique, a pour origine le désir de l’Autre. Chacune de mes peintures est une réponse à cette demande : «Comment désires-tu être peint ?». Mes pinceaux, guidés par les paroles livrées dans mon atelier, tentent de s’approcher au plus près de ce qui est dit : quête impossible !... tant le langage implique une perte, nous divise. Nous nous percevons comme uniques car nous sommes séparés de l’autre, nous sommes entourés de vide. L’autre et le vide ne sont pas seulement extériorités, ils sont en nous, et pour la psychanalyse c’est par l’imaginaire que nous trouvons notre unité. La psychanalyse, la méditation, l’alchimie et la peinture ont ceci de commun qu’elles sont toutes des disciplines construites à partir de la pratique et chacune d’entre elles aborde l’introspection à sa manière, qui peuvent s’enrichir les unes les autres. / The present research work focuses on the painted portrait and the opportunity it offers to meet people and exchange moments of friendship. It aims at analyzing what is at stakes in this process by means of theoretical tools such as psychology and psychoanalysis. It is also concerned with the understanding of how this «hand to hand» and «presence to presence» practice gets its anchorage in time and how it unfolds it and refers to it. The get together process, as well as my own practice, are the expression of desire – desire of the Other. Each of my paintings is an attempt to answer this single question: «How would the person posing for me like to be painted?». Then, as if guided by his or her wish, my brushes enter into action in order to fulfill it to the best of my abilities – the task is of course impossible, because language implies a loss and gets us apart from one another. Each of us sees oneself as unique, for we are separated from each other: we are indeed surrounded by emptiness. The Other and emptiness don’t belong to the outside, they are part of ourselves. In the field of psychoanalysis, we manage to find our unity through imagination. Psychoanalysis, meditation, alchemy and painting have all in common to be based on practice. Each of these disciplines deals with insight in its own way: in the end they all benefit from each other.

La gestuelle dans le portrait peint de la Renaissance italienne (XVe-XVIe siècles) / Gesture in the portrait of Italian Renaissance (XVe-XVIe centuries)

Longtemps figé dans l'immobilité, le portrait peint de la Renaissance va s'animer grâce à une gestuelle qui fit l'objet d'une construction progressive. Très précoce, l'idée du geste: est présente dès 1440 chez Filippo Lippi dans les portraits féminins, à partir de 1450 chez Andrea del Castagno pour une effigie masculine et, en 1470, chez Antonello da Messina pour les mimiques. Mais la norme est au portrait en buste et d'autres freins, imposés par les commanditaires, perdureront jusqu'à la fin du XVIe siècle. En dépit des tentatives dissidentes d'Antonello da Messina, de Léonard de Vinci, ou, plus tard, de Bartolomeo Passerotti, c’est le modèle princier qui va s'imposer.Trois types d'écrits de l'Antiquité se préoccupent de l'apparence du corps et de la civilisation des mœurs : les préceptes éducatifs, souvent intégrés à des thèmes plus vastes, les traités de physiognomonie qui tentent de lire sur le visage les intentions ou la destinée de l'autre, et la rhétorique, qui s'intéresse plus particulièrement à l'ethos, au pathos mais aussi à la gestuelle de l'orateur. Ces textes seront reçus à la Renaissance dans divers domaines qui traitent tous, à un moment ou un autre, du geste. Les traités des éducateurs du Quattrocento, qui jalonnent la mise en œuvre d’une véritable réforme, cèderont la place aux manuels de savoir-vivre du XVIe siècle. A partir de 1455, les maîtres à danser lombards posèrent par écrit les premiers éléments d'une théorie de la danse. Les traités artistiques s'intéressèrent au decorum dans lequel s'inscrit le geste. Au tout début du XVIIe siècle, un certain nombre de conventions furent enregistrées dans des recueils illustrés de chironomie. Loin de considérer le doigt, la main ou les membres comme des détails sémantiques, cette thèse montre que la gestuelle est un signal social à replacer dans son environnement. Elle s’est ouverte sur l’histoire de l’éducation, centrale dans celle du geste, ainsi que sur celle du genre, ou encore de la place de l’enfant et de la parentalité. Une place importante a été consacrée à l’histoire du costume, celui que l’on a choisi pour ces images. Au terme de ce travail, il devient évident que le Moyen Âge n’est pas la seule période à avoir vu se développer une "civilisation du geste". L'analyse des textes, de l’Antiquité comme de la Renaissance, révèle une remarquable continuité dans la conception et les théories relatives à la gestuelle, sous-tendue par l'Institution Oratoire, particulièrement la partie traitant de l'actio. Quintilien eut une réception de longue durée dans les arts de la prédication et, de manière plus subtile, ses qualités d’éducateur et d’observateur de l'enfance ont également favorisé sa transmission dans le cadre pédagogique. Cet auteur enseignait l’utilisation programmée du geste pour appuyer le discours, pointant comme un défaut la négligence dans "la toge, la chaussure et le cheveu". Déjà pour lui, ce soin devait être imperceptible, l’éducation et l’apprêt physique devenant comme une seconde nature, la sprezzatura avant l'heure. Parcourant nos images, la référence à l'actio qui s'est imposée depuis l'Antiquité dans l'éducation, l'expression, la représentation imagée ou théâtrale, rend compte de la précocité de cette civilisation et de sa pérennité dans le temps. Le geste s’impose comme un patrimoine vivant, transmis le plus souvent de manière inconsciente de siècle en siècle, par le biais d’une multitude de canaux et de disciplines, parmi lesquels on compte le portrait, à la fois récepteur et vecteur. / The portrait, long considered as a rigid pictorial genre, became increasingly lively through the progressive introduction of gestural expression. This idea appeared as early as 1440 in Filippo Lippi’s female portraits, in 1450 in Andrea del Castagno’s painting of a man and in 1470, in Antonello da Messina’s mimes. But the standard surrounding is bust-length portraiture and other restrictions on movement, imposed by the commissions, lasted until the 16th century. Despite various dissenting works, such as those of Antonello da Messina, Leonardo Da Vinci, or later, Bartolomeo Passerotti, the Princely model held sway.In Antiquity, three literary categories, each with a different approach, addressed the appearance of the body and civilization of the customs : educational precepts often contained within vaster literary works, physiognomic treatises — which attempt to read from faces an individual’s intentions and destiny — and rhetorical studies which, in particular, concern the ethos and the pathos, but equally the orator’s gestures. During the Renaissance these three disciplines all influenced various domains, which are interested, at one point or another, in the gesture. The Quattocento’s didactic treatises, which paved the way for a true reform, were replaced by manuals of etiquette in the 16th century. From 1455, the Lombard dancing masters wrote the initial elements of a theory of dance. Artistic treatises on painting and sculpture insist on the decorum which included gesture. At the very beginning of the 17th century, a certain number of modern conventions were recorded in illustrated collections of chironomy.Far from considering the finger, the hand or the members as semantic details, this thesis shows that body movement is a social signal to be placed back in its environment. It open on the history of education, central in that of gesture, as well as on that of the genre, or still the place of children and the parenthood. An important place was dedicated to the history of the garment, the one that was chose for these pictures.Through this work, it becomes obvious that the Middle Ages are not the only period to have seen developing a "civilization of the gesture". The analysis of texts, of Antiquity as of Renaissance, reveals a remarkable continuity in the conception and the theories relative to the body movements, underlain by the Oratorical Institution, particularly the part dealing with the actio. Quintilien had a long-term reception in the arts of preaching and, in a more subtle way, his qualities of educator and observer of the childhood also favoured his transmission in the educational frame. This author taught the use scheduled of the gesture to support the speech, considering a defect the carelessness in "the toga, the shoe and the hair". Already for him, this care was to be imperceptible, the education and the body care becoming as a second nature, the sprezzatura before time. Browsing our images, the reference to the actio that got established since Antiquity in education, expression, and both pictorial and theatrical imagery, acknowledges how precocious that civilization was and how perennial it has been.The gesture is asserted as a living heritage, transmitted more or less consciously through time, through a myriad of conduits and disciplines, including the portrait, both as recipient and vector.

Essai d'analyse structuraliste du décor des palais assyriens et considérations diachroniques sur la représentation de la royauté au Proche-Orient ancien au premier millénaire av. J.-C.

Ce travail présente une nouvelle analyse des bas-reliefs des palais néoassyriens du premier millénaire av. J.-C. Elle combine une analyse spatiale, basée sur la restitution à l’aide de l’imagerie 3D des palais d’Assurnazirpal II et Sargon II, qui permet la remise en situation des images dans l’architecture, et une analyse sémiologique.L’analyse de la structure de ces images, couplée à une étude sémantique des textes des palais qui leurs sont associés permet de montrer que les décors, ainsi que les textes, forment des portraits de rois, dont la synthèse se trouve dans la salle du trône, centre du palais et du royaume, les thèmes des images présents dans les autres salles étant concentrés dans celle-ci.Mais les portraits ainsi mis en évidence sont partagés entre un portrait de la royauté, traditionnel et stéréotypé, et le portrait du roi. Ils se situent également entre deux conceptions du temps, le premier circulaire, manifesté par les images faisant le tour des salles, ainsi que par l’inscription des Fastes chez Sargon II racontant les campagnes militaires du roi selon un découpage géographique, et un temps linéaire, manifesté par les textes des Annales.Le portrait du roi se ferait ainsi dans ce temps linéaire, et le portrait de la royauté dans le temps cyclique, les événements s’y reproduisant, sources de traditions, comme la forme des salles du trône, les thèmes utilisés et les conventions employées dans la représentation. Le portrait du roi se manifestant dans le choix de tel ou tel thème au détriment des autres, comme les scènes rituelles sous Assurnazirpal II, qui laissent la place à la chasse au lion sous Assurbanipal, concrétisant un éloignement du rituel dans les images entamé sous Sargon II. / This work presents a new analysis of low reliefs of neo-Assyrian palaces from the first millennium B.C. It combines a spatial analysis, based on 3D restitutions of Assurnazirpal II and Sargon II palaces, which permits to replace images in the architecture, and a semiological analysis.Structural analysis of images associated with a semantic study of texts present in palaces too, permits to demonstrate that the decoration and texts make portraits of kings. Throne rooms are synthesis of these portraits, as centre of the palace and kingdom, themes of images in other rooms being concentrated in this one.But these portraits are divided between a portrait of royalty, traditional and stereotyped, and the portrait of the king. They are so between two conceptions of time. One circular, shows by images going round rooms, and by the Display Inscription from the palace of Sargon II which tells of king’s military campaigns according to a geographical cutting. The other time is linear, as showed in annals of kings.The portrait of the king would take place in this linear time, and the portrait of kingship in the cyclical one, events to recur in, sources of traditions, like the throne room plans, themes used and conventions employed in representations. The portrait of the king isapparent in themes chosen among the others. So, ritual scenes with Assurnazirpal II left place to hunt scenes with Assurbanipal, who concretizes a distance with ritual images started under Sargon II.

Portraits de dévots, pratiques religieuses et expérience spirituelle dans la peinture des anciens Pays-Bas (1400-1550)

Présent dès les premiers siècles du Moyen Âge et ce, jusqu'au XVIIe siècle au moins, le portrait de dévot (ou portrait dévotionnel) connaît à la fin du Moyen Âge un succès sans précédent et ce, particulièrement dans la peinture des anciens Pays-Bas. Alors qu'il était jusque-là essentiellement réservé aux princes et aux souverains, il connaît désormais une diffusion large. Nobles, bourgeois et membres du clergé désirent laisser une trace de leur piété et de leur passage sur terre. Par leur présence dans limage, ils expriment leur dévotion, demandent la protection d'un saint et s'efforcent d'assurer leur salut dans l'au-delà. Ainsi s'expliquent la multiplication et la diversification des peintures religieuses comportant un ou plusieurs portraits de personnes agenouillées les mains jointes. D'un point de vue culturel, l'intérêt de cette production picturale réside dans le fait que la représentation des dévots, qui lisaient et appliquaient les préceptes de la littérature dévotionnelle et mystique, peut être perçue comme une « mise en image » des pratiques religieuses et de lexpérience spirituelle telle quelles étaient vécues à l'époque. Composée de deux parties, la thèse envisage de manière systématique et exhaustive les modes de représentation du portrait dévotionnel dans la peinture religieuse des anciens Pays- Bas entre 1400 et 1550 et leurs significations dans le contexte religieux de l'époque. Ce corpus duvres forme un ensemble vaste et hétérogène, auquel il serait vain de vouloir appliquer une clé interprétative unique. Cest pourquoi, dans un premier temps, nous avons ouvert le champ de nos investigations de la manière la plus large possible, afin doffrir une vue densemble complète des modalités dintégration des portraits dans la composition religieuse. Ensuite, le second temps de notre travail a requis une mise au point serrée sur une problématique précise. Il sest alors agi détudier les dimensions spirituelles de ces tableaux. Préalablement à ces démarches analytiques et interprétatives, un catalogue des peintures religieuses comportant des portraits de dévots a été établi. Il comprend 663 entrées. Les peintures religieuses comportant des portraits dévotionnels sont des images particulières, mêlant éléments sacrés et profanes. De ce fait, elles appellent une étude rendant justice à leur double nature.Nous avons ainsi développé une méthode danalyse de ces images qui tient compte de leurs aspects tant iconographiques que formels. Le corpus des oeuvres a ainsi été classé selon une typologie qui prend en compte la localisation des portraits dans la structure matérielle de loeuvre (sur lavers ou le revers des volets, sur le même panneau que la scène religieuse ou dans des diptyques), le type de scène religieuse devant laquelle les portraits apparaissent (scène narrative ou scène hiératique) et la présence ou non de saints patrons qui présentent les dévots. Basée sur cette typologie, la première partie de la thèse consiste en un panorama complet des différentes modalités dintégration des portraits dans la composition religieuse. Elle se compose de cinq chapitres. Létude typologique du corpus a non seulement permis de mettre en évidence la variété des formules dintégration des dévots dans la composition, mais aussi la répartition déséquilibrée des oeuvres au sein des catégories danalyse. Dans la seconde partie de la thèse (composée de trois chapitres), notre approche du portrait dévotionnel a consisté à déterminer comment les tableaux pouvaient être utilisés comme support et comme « mises en image » du processus spirituel des personnes représentées en prière. Pour ce faire, nous avons mis à profit les acquis des étapes préalables de mon travail et nous les avons enrichis en confrontant les images avec la littérature dévotionnelle et mystique contemporaine. Comme la thèse le montre, les implications spirituelles du portrait dévotionnel sont vastes : le tableau se présente comme un intermédiaire entre le dévot et les saints à qui il adresse ses prières. De la sorte, limage matérialise, annonce voire idéalise la rencontre entre le fidèle et le Christ, entre le monde visible de lici-bas et le monde invisible de lau-delà. Non seulement elle rend présents aux yeux du spectateur léternel et linvisible, mais elle permet également au dévot dentrer physiquement dans limage, de manière à montrer picturalement la perfection spirituelle quil atteint.

L'apport de Prudence Heward, Lilias Torrance Newton et Jori Smith à l'élaboration de la modernité picturale canadienne : 1920-1948

Dans la continuité des ouvrages publiés durant les dernières années sur l'art moderne et sur les femmes artistes, le présent mémoire s'attarde sur la participation de Prudence Heward, de Lilias Torrance Newton et de Jori Smith au développement de la modernité picturale canadienne. C'est plus précisément l'étude des portraits de femmes et d'enfants peints de 1920 à 1948 qui nous intéresse puisque la figure humaine, en plus de caractériser les productions de ces trois peintres, est l'un des thèmes privilégiés de la modernité canadienne naissante. C'est ainsi que nous tentons de démontrer que ces artistes, en plus d'intégrer les principes esthétiques modernes tels que les définit notamment l'historienne de l'art Esther Trépanier, expriment une vision à la fois intime et personnelle de la femme et de l'enfant. En premier lieu, il importe de définir ce qu'est la modernité picturale au Canada durant la période de l'entre-deux-guerres. En nous appuyant sur les recherches de Trépanier, nous différencions, tout comme la chercheuse, les modernités européenne et canadienne. Les approches historiographiques et historiques occupent donc une place importante dans la constitution de notre pensée. Toutefois, c'est l'analyse formelle qui permet de mesurer de manière adéquate la participation de Heward, de Torrance Newton et de Smith à l'élaboration de la modernité picturale. Ces analyses nous aident à comprendre, par exemple, l'influence cézannienne dans l'art des trois peintres, mais aussi de constater l'usage de teintes flamboyantes, de grands aplats de couleur et de la ligne contour, bref autant de caractéristiques des esthétiques modernes en vigueur au pays durant ces quelque vingt années. De même, nous observons que le trio d'artistes a posé un regard moderne sur le corps de la femme, entre autres en peignant à plusieurs reprises une personne confiante en elle-même et au caractère bien défini. Cependant, c'est principalement grâce au nu que Heward, Torrance Newton et Smith ont pu remettre en question la représentation de la femme en tant que sujet peint puisque les nombreuses figures dénudées qu'elles ont peintes défient souvent les conventions qui régissent le genre au Canada durant les années 1920 à 1940. Les trois peintres ne se sont toutefois pas limitées à peindre des femmes possédant un fort caractère. En effet, plusieurs de leurs portraits présentent aussi une femme ou un enfant témoignant d'une grande vulnérabilité ou d'une tristesse apparente. Qu’est-ce que la représentation honorifique ? Cette simple question guide l’exploration de la pratique, née au IVe siècle et développée à l’époque hellénistique, qui consiste à offrir aux bienfaiteurs un monument à leur image. Fondée sur les décrets honorifiques et les sources archéologiques, l’analyse est d’abord matérielle. Sont ainsi examinées les contraintes et les attentes qui déterminent le choix du support de la représentation, de son matériau et de son emplacement. Dans le cas des statues, la forme de la base, les dimensions de l’œuvre et son mode de fixation sont étudiés. La vie des œuvres ne s’arrête cependant pas avec leur installation : plusieurs chapitres analysent leur entretien et, à rebours, leur mutilation, leur destruction et leur remploi. Une étude iconographique de la représentation honorifique est ensuite proposée. La description des œuvres conservées permet de brosser le portrait de la cité idéale que reflète la représentation honorifique, des stratèges vainqueurs aux femmes. Les marges du genre sont aussi explorées, à travers les représentations de héros et de souverains, mais aussi d’enfants. Ces études matérielle et iconographique sont le fondement de l’analyse historique. L’élucidation des origines de la représentation honorifique, qui remontent à l’époque archaïque, permet ainsi de dégager les spécificités de la représentation honorifique publique. Celle-ci sert ensuite de référence dans l’analyse des représentations honorifiques privées et commémoratives. Forte de cette exploration large, l’étude se clôt sur un examen des fonctions politiques et sociales de la représentation honorifique et de leur évolution à la basse époque hellénistique. / What does honorific representation stand for? Starting from this apparently simple question, the present study explores the many aspects of the habit, beginning in the 4th century B.C. and developing through the Hellenistic period, of granting the benefactors a representation of themselves. Based on the honorific decrees and the archaeological evidence, the analysis is primarily material. Thus, the expectations and constraints guiding the choice of a medium, of a material and of a place of erection are first examined. In the case of a statue, its size, the type of its base and the way it is fixed are thoroughly studied. But with their erection, the life of the representations just begins: a few chapters are devoted to their cleaning and also to their mutilation, destruction and reuse. Iconography is the second main topic of the study. Through a description of the remaining works of art, a portrait of the ideal city reflected by the honorific representation is drawn, from the victorious generals to the women. The limits of the genre are also explored, through a study of the representations of heroes and kings, but also of children. Both material and iconographic studies support the historical analysis. An introductory focus on the origins of the honorific representation allows a determination of the specific aspects of public representation. Keeping those in mind as a reference, the analysis turns then to the less studied private honorific and commemorative representations. This large scope exploration leads finally to an examination of the social and political role of the honorific representation and of its evolution through the late Hellenistic period.

'The Proust of painting' : Jacques-Émile Blanche, the 'neurasthenic portrait' and the nervous elite of Paris, 1900

Jacques-Émile Blanche (1861-1942) is rarely included in histories of late nineteenth-century French art, despite his prolific career as an artist who produced over 2,000 paintings. A portraitist, Blanche’s upbringing as the son of an eminent psychiatrist provided him with a wealth of sitters connected to his father’s fashionable clinic and, I argue, a distinctive approach to their representation. These relatively unstudied portraits of famous Parisian intellectuals and socialites deserve our attention as works of ‘psychological impressionism’. Combining penetrating observation with painterly execution, Blanche’s methods emphasised the ‘nervous’ disposition of his sitters. Blanche’s practice as a portraitist is one of the reasons for his neglect. His contemporaries were evasive when it came to writing about the genre, uncertain of how to evaluate it – a critical apprehension that has persisted to this day. Art historians are as implicated in what may be thought of as a hesitation around the status and significance of portraiture in late-nineteenth-century French art. The thesis seeks in part to redress this through its examination of Blanche’s portraits as intuitive works of art that not only reflected but also, more actively, produced particular forms of knowledge about the ‘nervous’ condition of Parisian high society. With a focus on Blanche’s depictions of Marcel Proust (1871-1922) and the Comtesse de Castiglione (1837-1899), the thesis considers Blanche’s ‘neurasthenic portraits’ in relation to discourses on modern psychiatry, modernity, and modern art, drawing attention to how they enrich our understanding of the social, cultural and artistic contexts in which Blanche lived and worked. By situating Blanche’s artistic practice within his father’s clinical practice, and by embracing a methodology that draws upon both the histories of art and psychiatry, I argue that the language of Blanche’s portraiture was environmentally connected to the language of nervous disorder. As such this thesis will provide an original contribution to the scholarship on Blanche and offer significant insights into the entanglement of art, culture and nerves in nineteenth-century Paris.

James Joyce é um dos escritores mais famosos do século 20, sendo sua obra muito comentada por leitores e acadêmicos, especialmente devido ao alto nível de complexidade de Ulisses e Finnegans Wake, os romances da fase madura. O foco da presente dissertação, todavia, são os primeiros livros de Joyce que, apesar de serem mais acessíveis ao público em geral, também contêm toda a elaboração linguística e simbólica que caracteriza o autor. Trato especificamente do volume de contos Dublinenses e do romance Um Retrato do Artista Quando Jovem, utilizando para análise deste o suporte oferecido pelo outro romance anterior, não publicado em vida, Stephen Hero. O objetivo da pesquisa é investigar aspectos presentes na prosa de Joyce que revelem a formulação e a aplicação de sua teoria estética. Como a cidade de Dublin surge como uma metáfora sobre as circunstâncias de ser irlandês, interessa ao leitor adquirir alguma familiaridade com a cultura e a história daquele país e com as relações existentes entre os irlandeses e sua terra natal, especialmente no que tange às questões sobre religiosidade e sobre a dominação inglesa. A dissertação vem estruturada em quatro capítulos. O primeiro apresenta James Joyce tanto como pessoa quanto como escritor em formação, nascendo e crescendo em Dublin na virada dos séculos XIX e XX. São analisadas as influências exercidas pelo contexto católico de sua criação e pela crise social e econômica enfrentadas tanto pelo país quanto pela família do autor. O segundo capítulo lida com Dublinenses, o conjunto de contos que apresenta a visão de Joyce sobre a cidade de Dublin. Esses contos podem ser lidos individualmente, mas a obra assume um significado maior quando considerada de forma unificada em termos de linguagem, simbologia, estratégias narrativas e objetivos, em um plano de evolução que abrange fases da infância, da adolescência, da maturidade e da vida pública. As personagens compartilham características comuns: paralisia, falta de perspectivas e incapacidade de entender ou de reagir aos fatores históricos e sociais que os colocam naquela posição. Entre tais fatores predominam três, a cultura católica, a dominação inglesa e a inabilidade das pessoas para reagir de maneira criativa e produtiva aos problemas que se apresentam. O terceiro capítulo analisa a evolução do fazer artístico de Joyce a partir do binômio Stephen Hero e Um Retrato do Artista Quando Jovem, tendo como elemento comum a ideia do Künstlerroman. No quarto e último capítulo, apresento um comentário sobre as marcas de individuação de Joyce em relação a alguns de seus contemporâneos que também tratam sobre questões envolvendo arte, história e tradição. Ao término do trabalho, espero que a minha percepção sobre o conjunto de fatores que propiciaram o surgimento de um autor como Joyce possa ser de utilidade para pessoas que, como eu, acreditam tanto na importância estética quanto na relevância política e social desses três primeiros livros, os primeiros retratos de Dublin que James Joyce produziu. / James Joyce is one of the most famous writers in the 20th century, whose work is very commented both by readers and scholars, especially because of the high level of complexity of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, the two mature masterpieces. The focus of the present thesis, however, lies on the first books written by Joyce, because they are more manageable for reading, and yet bear all the linguistic and symbolic sophistication that marks Joyce’s production. The corpus of the research comprises the book of short stories Dubliners and the novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, using as support to the analysis of the latter, the previous novel, never published in life, Stephen Hero. The aim of this thesis is to investigate aspects of Joyce’s prose that expose the stages of construction and application of his aesthetic theory. The city of Dublin comes as a metaphor about the condition of being Irish. As a consequence, some familiarity with Irish history and culture is relevant for a better understanding of the books, and of the complex relations involving the Irish and their land, especially in matters concerning Catholicism and English domination. The thesis is divided in four chapters. The first draws on James Joyce, considered both as a person and as a writer in progress, born and raised in Dublin in the turn of the 19th into the 20th centuries. The chapter centres on the relations involving the influence of the Catholic context of his formation and the economic and social crises experienced by Ireland and by the Joyce family at the time. Chapter two is about Dubliners, the collection of short stories that presents Joyce’s view about the city of Dublin. These stories can be read independently from one another, but they acquire a finer meaning if considered as a unit in terms of language, symbolism, narrative strategies and goals, besides following a plan of evolution from childhood to adolescence, and to maturity, and public life. The characters share common characteristics: paralysis, lack of perspective, incapacity to understand or to react to the historical and social factors that put them in that position. Among those factors we have the Catholic tradition, the English domination and the inability of the people to react to circumstantial problems in a creative and productive way. Chapter three analyses the evolution of Joyce’s craftsmanship through the duo Stephen Hero/A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, using the notion of Künstlerroman as a starting point. In the last chapter I deal with the peculiarities in Joyce’s style, contrasting them to the practice of some other contemporary authors who also state their views about art, history and tradition. As an aftermath to this thesis, I hope that my comments about the body of elements that propitiated the rise of Joyce as the author he is may prove useful to other people like me, who believe in the relevance of his contribution to the aesthetics of literature and to the discussion about political and social issues related to Ireland, in the first portraits of Dublin displayed in Joyce’s three first books.
