Childhood Experience of Typically Developed Siblings of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder in Iran : A Thematic Analysis

Vazifehghelichi, Mahsa January 2024 (has links)
The literature on the experience of siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been growing in recent years. However, most studies have been conducted in Western countries. This study aimed to address this gap by conducting a thematic analysis on childhood experiences of typically developed (TD) siblings of children with ASD in Iran, exploring their challenging and positive experiences along with the support they received and would have needed. In this regard, five adult TD siblings who grew up with an ASD sibling in Iran were interviewed about their childhood experiences. The analysis of the interviews resulted in six main themes: Experience of distress and personal growth, Complex sibling dynamics: challenges and joys, Challenges within the family, Informal support as the main resource, Inadequate formal support, and Social and cultural barriers This study indicated that the Iranian TD siblings experienced emotional difficulties, challenges in interactions with their ASD siblings, and challenges in their families. Despite these issues, positive outcomes such as personal growth and enhanced empathy were also reported. This study also underscored the critical role of both informal and formal support systems, highlighting a significant gap in professional support and a lack of societal understanding of ASD within the Iranian context. Recommendations include developing formal supports adjusted to the unique needs of TD siblings considering their social and cultural context.

The effectiveness of the social network in higher education in Saudi Arabia : action research to develop an e-learning conceptual model based on blog tools

Al-Hojailan, Mohammed Ibrahim A. January 2013 (has links)
During the last two decades, there has been great interest in integrating computers and technology in higher education. Currently web tool services for learning have attracted researchers in the field of education technology to integrate eLearning within the learning environment. In particular, the Internet has become an increasingly important and novel feature of the modern learning environment. Amongst the innovations, a certain tool has become extremely popular worldwide. It is known as web 2.0. It is a read/write web. Blogs (web logs) are one its fastest growing features. The researcher investigated the exciting prospect of developing an eLearning environment by utilizing and applying effective blogs. To date there has been little use of blogs as online tools in higher education, especially in Saudi Arabia. This study concerned the disclosure of more understanding of the use of web 2.0 applications in higher education in Saudi universities. The first purpose of this study was to develop an eLearning model for web 2.0. Its second purpose was to examine learners' perceptions and attitudes toward web 2.0 applications, i.e. blog tools by exploring the relationship between learners' attitudes toward blog tool instructions and factors identified as potentially influencing these attitudes. This research adopted an approach based on an interpretive philosophical paradigm accompanied by a qualitative methodology coupled with action research methods. Learning theories were considered as a theoretical framework. The learning theories considered was Behaviorism, Cognitive and Constructivism with Bloom's Taxonomy and Boud's Model. Data was collected qualitatively and analyzed thematically. Triangulation was conducted upon the outcomes of the questionnaires, interviews, observations and blog content analysis. This research made four main contributions. First, it identified the factors that influenced learner acceptance for the use of blog tools in higher education. Second, it investigated the relationship between learners' attitudes and their acceptance of the utilization of blog tools within their learning environment. Third, it responded to calls from the literature review to investigate blog utilization by conducting an in-depth investigation that utilized qualitative methodology with action research. Lastly, it provided further insight and a better understanding of blog usage with respect to structured/ unstructured learning environments.

Nationalism in 21st Century Chinese Blockbusters

荻羅拉, Tylova, Klara Unknown Date (has links)
This study is thematic analysis that sought to identify nationalistic themes in mainland China's box-office hits in the 21st century. Box-office hits as the study material were picked because of their potential to spread the message they carry. Altogether, 14 movies were analyzed through a deconstruction, identifying scenes and dialogues that contained nationalistic appeals of both political and cultural nationalism as defined by Greenfeld (1992). During the coding process, 22 nationalistic themes were labeled, defined and described. Additionally, the study examined nationalistic structures of the movies taking Gries' (2004) nationalistic narratives and Smith's (1995) ethnic myths as a basis. Movies' background, and historical context adressing China's movie industry and Chinese nationalism are included for clarification purposes. The movies were found to exhibit manifestations of both cultural and political nationalism. It was found that movies financed and backed by government tend to show political nationalism while commercial movies exhibit cultural nationalism. For the movies' thematic structures, the shift from positive ones showing China's achievements towards negative ones expressing China's suffering was discovered. / This study is thematic analysis that sought to identify nationalistic themes in mainland China's box-office hits in the 21st century. Vägen till återhämtning. Fontänhusmedlemmar berättar om vad som hjälper

Lindroos, Karin January 2015 (has links)
The aim of the present master thesis was to explore which experiences members at a Swedish clubhouse for psychosocial rehabilitation describe as important in their recovery process and for their (re)entrance in the labor market, and more specifically if and how they consider the clubhouse helpful in this process. With an inductive approach, six qualitative interviews with clubhouse members who had moved on from the clubhouse to employment in the labor market were carried out and analyzed through thematic analysis. The interviewees described helpful aspects of the clubhouse within five themes: A place to go to, Something sensible to do, Community and friendship, To recapture one's identity, and Moves on (but stays a member). These five themes illustrate different aspects of the overarching theme Individuality through community. The way the clubhouse was described as helpful in the interviews was further discussed in relation to common factors within all helpful interventions, Frank and Frank’s concept of demoralization, and the reconstruction of the sense of self according to Davidson and Strauss. In the present study, the clubhouse is described as a place where recovery from psychiatric problems can be supported.

Exploring talk of causality in mothers of anorexic daughters.

Blumberg, Bianca 08 February 2012 (has links)
This research focused primarily on exploring the talk of mothers of daughters with Anorexia Nervosa, paying specific attention to their emic perceptions of the underlying causes of Anorexia Nervosa. The research sought to reveal the discourses underpinning participants talk. Further, the way in which these discourses serve to construct Anorexia Nervosa in particular ways as well as the function these discourses serve were explored. This study is qualitative and exploratory in design and provides a unique understanding of Anorexia Nervosa in the form of emic accounts gleaned from mothers' own experiences. The findings of this research suggest that mothers of daughters with Anorexia Nervosa primarily reproduce a discourse on the causality of Anorexia Nervosa that is family or biomedically focused. Through analysis of the discourses embedded in participants’ talk, it became evident that participants reproduce discourses of gender and femininity and are influenced by societal pressure as well as the constructions of womanhood and motherhood. Insight into a side of the mother of the Anorectic, often concealed in the literature, was revealed through a semi-structured interview process with nine urban, middle-class, white South African mothers of daughters with Anorexia Nervosa. Interviews were then transcribed and analysed according to Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis. Incorporating the silenced voices of mothers of daughters with Anorexia Nervosa appears to have allowed for the emergence of a more generous view of the mother and has contributed to a larger set of discursive repertoires through which to understand Anorexia Nervosa. This research further gave rise to the realisation of a need for a critical education program whereby taken for granted notions can be revealed and actively engaged. This program would ideally seek to free the anorexic woman as well as the mother from the constraints of the uncritically constructed conceptualisations of Anorexia Nervosa and femininity.

Using Rapid Application Development for Software Development Projects

Suyash Agrawal (6634457) 14 May 2019 (has links)
<div>In the modern era where technology is constantly evolving, it is important to evaluate new technological tools and approaches in order to gauge their potential for adoption. Rapid Application Development (RAD) has highly evolved over the years, but it has not seen much response at the university level. Several studies show that perceptions of usability form the basis of acceptance or rejection of new tools and applications. Thus, running a usability study on a specific RAD tool coupled with autoethnographic documentation of specific development experience with that tool has the potential to encourage university faculty/staff to consider teaching/using it.</div><div><br></div><div>This research study seeks to understand developers' perceptions regarding the usability aspect of Mendix, a Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed to discover and understand the extent of perceived usefulness, ease of use and satisfaction with the tool. The results of the study presented a case for academicians on the viability of teaching RAD or using Mendix for their web application development needs. The study ultimately sought to help university faculty understand what to expect while teaching RAD to students from computing background and also help them decide if they would like to use tools like Mendix for their software development projects or continue to use specific coding languages (traditional software development) for software development projects. </div><div><br></div>

Exploring the idea of an Outdoor Primary School : - from the perspective of West European Outdoor Education Professionals

Drexler, Stina January 2019 (has links)
As past research has found benefits of outdoor education and the current global society is facing a decline in access to beneficial natural spaces due to urbanization (Keniger, Gaston, Irvine &amp; Fuller 2013), the aim of this master thesis research project was to explore the idea of an Outdoor Primary School, a way to provide children the access to beneficial natural spaces. In order to explore this idea, Professional Outdoor Educators (n= 61) were interviewed and asked to fill out a survey about the following aspects: outdoor and indoor spaces, learning activities, curriculum and challenges related to an Outdoor Primary School. There was a wide range of results showing that an Outdoor Primary School is a way to incorporate beneficial ways of learning, such as project-based learning, experience-based and practical learning, social learning, play and student-centered learning in formal schooling. Including learning content and activities that can aid children’s development such as food, animals and sustainability is also possible in an Outdoor Primary School as shown below. Furthermore, an Outdoor Primary School is an institution that can be equipped with beneficial learning environments, such as natural environments, a vast space, spaces for cooking, growing food and keeping animals, quiet zones, play zones and opportunities for creating, building and crafts. These results go in line with previous research about Outdoor Education and related fields, suggesting that an Outdoor Primary School both holds challenges but also is a possible model to bring together many beneficial ways of learning that are already being practiced today.

Föräldraskap och sociala medier : En intervjustudie om förstagångsmammors upplevelse av hur sociala medier inverkar på dem själva och sitt föräldraskap / Parenthood and social media : A qualitative interview study about first time mothers’ experience of social medias impact on themselves and their parenthood

Skott, Sandra, Ellen, Zelmerlöw Sigander January 2019 (has links)
The use of social media is increasing and an active user group is first time mothers. The aim of this qualitative study was to increase the knowledge about first time mothers’ experience of social medias impact on themselves and their parenthood. Nine semistructured interviews were conducted and analysed with thematic analysis, which resulted in five themes: Enriching community, To ease everyday life, An image difficult to live up to, Childcentric and Lack of control. The result showed that the mothers experienced social media as a natural aspect of everyday life and that social media had an impact on themselves and their parenthood, however they had ambivalent thoughts regarding how. Social media was described to contribute with social support and information at the same time as it could contribute with feelings of stress and inadequacy. Comparison  regarding for example body image, upbringing or the child’s development was reoccuring in the study’s result, which was discussed in relation to existing mother ideologies on social media.

Upplevelsen av fysisk aktivitet i återhämtningen från utmattningssyndrom. : En kvalitativ studie om upplevelsen av fysisk aktivitet i återhämtningen från utmattningssyndrom. / The experience of physical activity in the recovery from fatigue syndrome. : A qualitative study on the experience of physical activity in the recovery from fatigue syndrome.

Borgert, Susanne January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to describe the experience of physical activity in the recovery from fatigue syndrome. The study was based on a qualitative method in the form of thematic analysis. The data collection consisted of ten semi-structured interviews where the criteria consisted of all participants having been diagnosed with fatigue syndrome established and as well had recovered from it. Which meant that the participants were no longer on sick leave because of the disease. And that the participants also had used physical activity as an aid in their recovery. From the thematic analysis, four themes emerged that describe the experience linked to physical activity in the recovery. Acceptance of the course of the disease and in the recovery describes how the participants experience an acceptance towards the disease and which progresses throughout the recovery process. Balance between rest and activity describes how the participants find an inner balance and as well experience an increased sense of balance and control when they begin physical activity. Physical activity motivates well-being describes the motivation the participants experience with the help of physical activity. The last theme, the meeting with healthcare and its impact describes the participants meeting with healthcare and the help and care they experienced from the discovery of the disease and during the recovery period. The results show that when the individual finds an acceptance of the situation, they are more susceptible to commencing their recovery and when they find a balance in their state, the motivation to contribute with their own capacity helps to help the body recover. In the end, it is the individual himself who is the strongest driving force, but the result nevertheless demonstrates that they are in a great need of functioning communication and work of motivation in the health care sector.
