Music therapy in South Africa : music therapists' perceptions of training needs for current practice

This dissertation outlines the music therapists’ perceptions of training needs for current practice in South Africa. The purpose of my research is to construct a profile of music therapy graduates from the University of Pretoria who are currently practising in South Africa and to find how they perceive the MMus (Music Therapy) training programme in terms of their currents needs in practice, as well as their suggestions in terms of the adaptation of the training programme. The study is conducted within the qualitative and quantitative research paradigm, using questionnaires as data collection method, that were sent out to music therapists that graduated from the University of Pretoria. The survey collected data on the demographics and personal details of the respondents, their professional training and practice trends and their views of the fit between the training programme and practice needs, and suggestions as to where adaptations to the training programme might need to be made, based on their practice experience. Training in business skills and marketing together with additional information on client groups, contexts and the development of clinical and practical skills were identified as perceived needs in their practices. Undersökningen har gjorts medhjälp av intervjuer där sex undervisande lärare på programmet har fått svara på frågorgällande språket och hur det relaterar till utbildningens programgemensamma ämnen ochkurser. Vilken ställning anses språket ha i utbildningen och hur används det i enverkstadsmiljö när det kommer till undervisning? Undersökningen är kopplad till teorier kringlitteracitet och hur lärarnas strategier utifrån detta ser ut när det kommer till hur språketanvänds inom yrket och sedermera det kommande yrket. Genom intervjuerna framkommerdet att språket inom det Industritekniska programmet har en viktig funktion när det kommertill både undervisning och kopplingen till det kommande yrket ser ut. I det praktiska påprogrammet återfinns krav på en språklig kompetens som grundar sig i yrkets fackspråk ochterminologi. / This thesis examines what the linguistic dimensions consists of within the upper secondaryshool’s Industrial Engineering programme, with a focus on the Swedish language. The surveywas conducted using the help of interviews where six vocational teachers within theprogramme have been asked questions regarding the language and how it relates to theprogramme-wide subjects and courses. What kind of position is the language considered tohave within the education and how is it used in a workshop eniviroment when it comes toteaching? The study is linked to theories about literacy and what teacher’s strategies based onthis look like when it comes to how the language is used in the education and the futureprofession. The interviews show that the language within the Industrial Technical programmehas an important function when it comes to both teaching and the coming connection to thefuture profession. The practicality of the programme includes requirements for a linguisticcompetence based on the professional language and terminology of the profession.

Statliga rektorsprogrammet och dess kunskapsinnehåll

The study highlights the knowledge content of the Swedish National Leadership Training Programme based on Basil Bernstein's conceptual apparatus. The aim is to investigate what knowledge is offered to the principal through studies at the state-regulated principal's program. Through a document study, a first step examines which knowledge is made relevant in the target document established by the Swedish National Agency for Education. In a second step, what knowledge is actualized and made relevant in course plans that each university has developed based on the target document established by the Swedish National Agency for Education. In total, 22 documents have been analyzed via a content analysis that has been applied. The results show that the Swedish National Agency for Education's target document has a controlling effect on the universities' self-determination to design their curricula. In addition, the results show that the knowledge content of the Swedish National Leadership Training Programme has some limitation in terms of supporting a school on a scientific basis. This is due to the way the knowledge is organized in the state-regulated principal's program. / Studien belyser kunskapsinnehållet på rektorsprogrammet utifrån Basil Bernsteins begreppsapparat. Syftet är att undersöka vilka kunskaper som erbjuds för rektor genom studier vid det av staten reglerade rektorsprogrammet. Genom en dokumentstudie undersöks i ett första steg vilka kunskaper som görs relevanta i det av Skolverket fastställda måldokumentet. I ett andra steg, vilka kunskaper som aktualiseras och görs relevanta i kursplaner som varje lärosäte tagit fram med utgångspunkt i det av Skolverket fastställda måldokumentet. Sammantaget har 22 dokument analyserats via en innehållsanalys som har tillämpats. Resultaten visar att Skolverkets måldokument har en kontrollerande effekt över lärosätenas självbestämmande att utforma sina kursplaner. Därtill visar resultaten att rektorsprogrammets kunskapsinnehåll har viss begränsning i avseende att stödja en skola på vetenskaplig grund. Detta med anledning av hur kunskaperna är organiserade på det av staten reglerade rektorsprogrammet.

How can CA(SA) university students be better prepared for the SAICA training programme: A focus on relational and decision-making skills

Purpose: This study investigates the extent to which aspirant CA(SA)s perceive how the academic programme is, and should be, developing relational and decision-making (RDM) skills. There has been extensive criticism that these skills are insufficiently developed in accounting students, an unfortunate reality which, consequently, hinders their expected performance during the SAICA training programme. Research method: A questionnaire was distributed to 103 aspirant CA(SA)s (of which 44 responded) working at one of the largest audit firms globally and currently in their 1st to 3rd year of the SAICA training programme. The questionnaire consisted of three main questions focusing on the respondents' perception of the academic programme. Findings: The majority of the respondents perceive that almost all of the RDM skills are developed to an intermediate or advanced level during the academic programme. However, respondents also perceive that the academic programme should place greater focus on developing certain RDM skills, such as relationship-building; professional scepticism and teamwork, to an advanced level, to maximise performance during the training programme. Lastly, the case study method, a teaching method by academics, resulted in the highest response rate for assisting in developing RDM skills. Originality and value: The study is the first to research RDM skills development, as defined within the new SAICA Competency Framework, during the South African academic programme. Furthermore, the findings of this study could assist SAICA in identifying RDM skills development shortcomings and whether the academic or training programme providers should bear more responsibility for developing certain skills.

A quantitative, descriptive, explorative design was used to evaluate a decentralised primary health care training programme at a training unit in the Limpopo Province. The study sought to determine to what extent the newly qualified diplomates were able to manage patients appropriately when faced with the realities, such as the shortage of personnel, large numbers of patients, shortage of resources and time constraints in the real situation without the support and guidance from medical practitioners and senior nursing personnel. Data were collected by observing the diplomates as they managed patients with hypertension by making use of checklists. The diplomates were also interviewed by making use of an in interview schedule. The major inferences drawn from this study was that these diplomates were competent in the management of these patients and were satisfied with their abilities and training. / Health Studies / M. A. Alignment of the emerging management development programme(EMDP) to the human resource development strategy for the South African public service

The focus of this research is to understand the relevance of the Human Resource Development Strategy for the functioning of South African Public Service and its implications for the Emerging Management Development Programme (EMDP). One of the main challenges of the Human Resource Development Strategy (HRDS) is its translation into well designed training programmes that are aligned with the goals and objectives of the strategy. The Emerging Management Development Programme (EMDP) is meant to be the translation and interpretation of the HRDS for public sector training and development on emerging management level. The intention of this study is to evaluate, analyse and understand the alignment of the EMDP with the Human Resource Development Strategy for the South African pubic service and subsequently suggest proposals for the possible improvement of emerging middle management development. The objectives of the research will be stated in the form of two critical questions:  What are the main directives in the Human Resource Development Strategy for the Public Service regarding management development in general, and the gaps in the design and development of the Emerging Management Development Programme (EMDP) in particular?  How does the design and development of the current EMDP meet the strategic vision for management development as envisioned in the Human Resource Development Strategy for the Public Service? The research methodology applied in this study, is a qualitative research approach. This approach focuses on phenomena that occur in natural settings, i.e. in the real world and involve studying those phenomena in all of their complexity which is used to gather data. This data is preserved in descriptive narratives. A qualitative research approach also uses mainly the constructivist-interpretive perspective. The key finding is that as much as the EMDP is comprehensive, it is however not yet aligned with the Human Resource Development Strategy of the South African Public Service. The recommendation is that the conversion of the objectives of HRDS-SA into the learning outcomes of the EMDP in order to provide a framework for a comprehensive base of competencies that inform the curriculation of the EMDP is important. This will ensure that the learners are able to benefit from a multitude of skills development activities in the programme and, in so doing, render them more purposeful to improve their impact on the skills challenges of the country. / Public Administration and Management / M. For almost 200 years the University College of Physical Education and Sports in Stockholm (former Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics; GCI later GIH; Stockholm College of Physical Education and Sports) has been educating PE teachers - and still does. In the very beginning and throughout the first 100 years, gymnastics was a major part of the studies at the institute, and also in ordinary schools. Early gymnastics were invented by Per Henrik Ling, the father of the Swedish Ling gymnastics, and later developed by his son, Hjalmar Ling. The part of the Ling system called pedagogical gymnastics, consisted of “daily gymnastic training exercises”, which showed how gymnastics should be taught and performed. The aim of this thesis is to follow and describe gymnastics as a subject and its development at the PE teacher-training programme at GCI/GIH. Special attention is placed on the movement part without apparatus (the floor exercise) for male and female students. The time period studied is 1944 to 1992. The thesis consists of two separate empirical studies, with a shared interview study of 12 former teacher educators participating in both studies. Besides the above-mentioned interviews, the methods used are document analyses and visual analyses. Triangulation is used in order to follow the changes of the subject’s content, figuration and representation. The first empirical study investigates the institution of gymnastics’- collective memory, its content and legitimacy. This is done by looking at what time was allotted to the subject in relation to other subjects, and also which concepts were used in relation to floor exercise. The interviews deal with the objectives of the subject and what kind of influences the former teacher educators came in contact with. From a semiotic approach, the second study deals with visual analyses of film sequences, with floor exercises performed by male and female students. (See enclosed CD). The film material comes from the Institute’s events. The content and composition of the film sequences are analysed, and the representation of the movements is interpreted by semiotic discourse analyses. The interview study deals with the former teacher educators’ pedagogical view of the formation of the gymnastics. The results show that in 1944 the subject gymnastics took approximately 40% of the total study time. In 1992 the time allocated for gymnastics has been reduced to approximately 9%. From the 1940s to the 1970s, two separate gymnastics discourses existed, one male and one female, expressed in the movement content and in the figuration of movements. The male discourse was maintained almost intact, without any changes. The female discourse, on the other hand, was continually changed and developed over the actual period of time, strongly influenced by rhythmic and dance. When coeducation was implemented in the late 1970s, a new culture of body movements was developed – which was unisex. Between 1949 and1970 in the film material, the masculine discourse was represented by the body image of a systematically trained and disciplined body, executing corrective gymnastics exercises, according to an instrumental way of looking at physical training. The smooth, healthy looking young body image of a woman, executing rhythmical aesthetical gymnastics, according to existing values, characterised the feminine discourse. There seems to have been aesthetics fostering rationality that ruled the female gymnastics. In 1985 the representation of the body image changed, and focus on the performance of the movements disappeared. The objectives of the subject have changed from the collective, corrective and/or aesthetical form of gymnastics to a gymnastic discourse where the attention of simplifying the movements, the individual and the social climate in the group are central. Finally, the findings show that four factors have influenced the changes and development of the subject and the teacher-training programme. Firstly, changes in society in terms of equality, gender roles and a changed role of the PE teacher. Secondly, the impact of the sport discourse outweighed the status of the gymnastics discourse and its legitimacy. The cultivating values, in terms of the aesthetical schooling for the female students, disappeared. Thirdly, the striving for research-related instructions in the teachertraining programme, (urged by the state from 1977) affected both time allotments for gymnastics and sports and the relation between theoretical and practical courses. Finally, over the years, the subject gymnastics has been strongly influenced by different scientific discourses: first the medical discourse, followed by the physiological discourse and from the1980s and on, by the social scientific (pedagogical) discourse.

The instructional design of a training program for audiometricians

This study focused on designing a training programme for audiometricians, using the principles of instructional design. Instructional design is the continuing, systematic development of instructional specifications, utilizing researched strategies and principles to create detailed outcomes for the development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of training programmes. An audiometrician is defined by SANS (10083:2004), as a person registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an audiometrician, hearing aid acoustician or someone trained in audiometry. Audiometricians are adult learners. Therefore, in addition to instructional design principles, the principles of adult learning were also incorporated in the training programme. The successful training of audiometricians may ensure that noise induced hearing loss is significantly reduced when audiometric monitoring is appropriately implemented as part of a hearing conservation programme. Training for audiometricians is critical in this process as incorrect audiometric monitoring may negatively influence the outcomes of a hearing conservation programme. This study followed a descriptive research design where the results were described in a quantitative manner. Data was collected by means of electronically mailed questionnaires. All participants were practicing audiometricians at the time of the study and were registered with the South African Society for Occupational Health Nursing. All participants had an audiometric certificate as qualification. For the analysis of data, 181 completed questionnaires were used. The results were analyzed and described in terms of the respondents’ own experience regarding audiometry; their opinions regarding the topics they have been taught in audiometry; the duration of their own training programmes and their opinions regarding a future training programme for audiometricians. Based on the results of the above analysis, the instructional design programme for audiometricians was developed. The obtained results were used to determine what the topics, content, duration, learning outcomes and learner evaluation methods should be in the development of a training programme for audiometricians. This research study developed a training programme for audiometricians in order to ensure that all future audiometricians have the necessary knowledge to perform comprehensive hearing evaluations, interpret audiometric findings and thereby assist in reducing noise induced hearing loss in the industrial sector through hearing conservation programmes. AFRIKAANS : Hierdie studie is toegespits op die ontwerp van ‘n onderrigprogram vir oudiometriste waarin die beginsels van onderrigontwerp toegepas is. Onderrigontwerp behels die deurlopende en stelselmatige ontwikkeling van onderrigspesifikasies deur gebruik te maak van nagevorsde strategieë en beginsels om gedetailleerde uitkomste vir die ontwikkeing, evaluering en onderhoud van opleidingsprogramme daar te stel. ‘n Oudiometris word gedefinieer deur wetgewing (SANS 10083:2004) as ‘n person wat geregistreer is by die Health Professions Council of South Africa as ‘n oudiometris, gehoorapparaat akoestikus of iemand wat opgelei is in oudiometrie. Die onderrigontwerp-program is op grond van die resultate van bognoemde analise ontwikkel. Die resultate wat verkry is, is gebruik om die temas, inhoud, duur, leeruitkomste en evalueringsmetodes in die ontwikkeling van ‘n opleidingsprogram vir oudiometriste te bepaal. Developing an Adapted HIV/AIDS Training Programme for Church Leaders in Limpopo Province, South Africa

The church of Africa, which hosts the largest numbers of infected and affected people, is also challenged to be involved in the response against HIV/AIDS epidemic. Church leaders are experiencing difficulties in fulfilling their role in HIV/AIDS interventions of which they have not received training. The complexity of HIV/AIDS demands a training programme that does not simply deal with symptoms, but it must address the complexities behind and in front of the spread, and earnestly seek effective ways of controlling the spread, as well as various strategies of caring for the infected and those affected with HIV and AIDS. The purpose of this study was to develop an adapted HIV/AIDS training programme for church leaders in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. A convergent parallel mixed methods design was used; quantitative and qualitative data were collected during the same phase of the research process. The population comprised of church leaders from Christian churches in the Limpopo province. A non-probability purposive sampling was used for qualitative approach, while quota sampling was used for quantitative approach. Questionnaires were used to collect quantitative data, while in-depth interviews were used to collect qualitative data in this study. Data analysis was done separately and the two sets of results were merged into an overall interpretation of the study that informed the development of an adapted HIV/AIDS training programme. The findings of the study revealed that church leaders were not trained on how they can be involved in the response against HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Limpopo province. The current training programme did not clarify church leaders’ role towards the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The curriculum development process structure by Meyer and Van Niekerk (2008), and elements outlined by Dickoff, James and Wiedenbach (1968), were adapted to develop the training programme. A developed training programme was then validated by HIV/AIDS trainers and experts in programme development. Relevant recommendations were made to encourage churches to work effectively in addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Limpopo Province. / NRF
