Risk Assessment of International Mixed Asset Portfolio with Vine Copulas

Nilsson, Axel January 2022 (has links)
This thesis gives an example of assessing the risk of a financial portfolio with international assets, where the assets may be of different classes, by the use of Monte Carlo simulation and Extreme Value Theory. The simulation uses univariate modelling, models of the assets’ returns as stochastic processes, as well as vine copulas to create dependency between the variables. For the asset returns a modified version of a discretized Merton jump diffusion model was used. The risk assessment used Extreme Value Theory to calculate Value at Risk and Expected Shortfall of the simulated portfolio. However, the resulting return distribution, and the risk assessment thereof, was not entirely satisfactory due to unreasonably large values ascertained.

Anatomia do caule e da raiz em Menispermaceae\" / Stem and root anatomy in Menispermaceae

Tamaio, Neusa 20 December 2006 (has links)
The pantropical family Menispermaceae includes several habits, like herbaceous vines, herbs, shrubs, and trees, showing cambial variant of successive type. The present study is an anatomical approach of stem and root of woody and herbaceous vine habits. In the present study, 31 specimens were investigated, sampling 10 genera and 14 species. Of those species, five are herbaceous vines, one is herb (Cissampelos ovalifolia) and one is shrub (Abuta grandifolia), and the rest are woody vines. Stems of woody vines and shrubs show successive cambia, not assigned to herbs and herbaceous vines. For the first time in the family, it is observed in the woody vine Abuta imene that the conjunctive tissue originates from the pericycle, and that the successive cambia, on its turn, originates from the conjunctive tissue. In the comparative analysis of secondary xylem in its several successive rings in the same stem, the wood produced by new vascular rings does not differ qualitatively from the original vascular ring, while there are differences in quantitative characters: diameter of vessel elements show significant increase in centreperiphery direction. The stem analysis between two habits of Abuta grandifolia (woody vine X shrub) shows that both have the same anatomical pattern. However, diameter of vessel elements is smaller in shrubs. Quantitative variation occurs between stem and root in herbaceous vine wood, and are related to diameter and length of vessel elements, which are larger in stems. Some data are described for the family for the first time: (1) The subterranean system of Disciphania hernandia is assigned as root tuber; (2) Splitting of ray by transformation of ray initials to fusiform initials in xylem and phloem; (3) Presence of successive cambia in woody vine root of Chondrodendron platiphyllum. Despite the anatomical general resemblance of stem, there are characters that distinguish herbaceous from woody vines, like: the kind of parenchyma, crystal morphology, diameter and distribution of sieve tube elements, and transformation of fusiform and ray initials in herbaceous vines. Additionally, some anatomical aspects of secondary phloem in stem are shown. The standardization of woody studies in the family considering the first ring is recommended. Discussions are made about the presence of medullary ray in the family. It is concluded that the stem of woody vines are very similar to each other, and thus, identification of woody portions used in commercialized objects is possible only at familial level.

Enhancing ecosystem services in vineyards to improve the management of Botrytis cinerea

Jacometti, Marco Alexander Azon January 2007 (has links)
Organic mulches and cover crops mulched in situ were assessed for their effects on B. cinerea primary inoculum and disease levels in inflorescences at flowering and/or bunches at harvest. Organic mulches were used to enhance biological degradation of vine debris to reduce levels of B. cinerea primary inoculum the following season. Four mulch types (anaerobically and aerobically fermented marc (grape pressings), inter-row grass clippings and shredded office paper) were applied under ten-year-old Riesling vines in a ten-replicate randomized block design in New Zealand over two consecutive years. Plastic mesh bags, each containing naturally infected vine debris, were placed under vines on bare ground (control) and at the soil-mulch interface, in winter (July) 2003 and 2004. In each year, half the bags were recovered at flowering (December) and the remainder at leaf plucking (February), for assessment of B. cinerea sporulation from the vine debris and debris degradation rate. Bait lamina probes, which measure soil biological activity, were placed in the soil-mulch interface three weeks before each of the two bag-recovery dates in both years and were then removed and assessed at the same times as were the bags. All mulches led to a reduction in B. cinerea sporulation. This reduction was significantly correlated with elevated rates of vine debris decomposition and increased soil biological activity. Over both years, compared with the controls, all treatments gave a 3-20-fold reduction in B. cinerea sporulation, a 1.6-2.6-fold increase in vine debris degradation and in the two marc and the paper treatments, a 1.8-4-fold increase in activity of soil organisms. The mulches also altered vine characteristics and elevated their resistance to B. cinerea through changes to the soil environment. Functional soil biological activity, as measured by Biolog Ecoplates and bait lamina probes, was increased 2-4 times in the two marc and paper treatments, compared with the control, an effect relating to the elevated soil moisture and reduced temperature fluctuations under these mulches. Soil nutrient levels and the C:N ratios were also affected in these treatments. The mulched paper lowered vine canopy density by up to 1.4 times that of the other treatments, an effect which probably led to elevated light penetration into the canopy and consequent increased canopy temperature, photosynthesis and lowered canopy humidity. These changes to soil and vine characteristics increased grape skin strength by up to 10% in the paper treatment and sugar concentrations by 1.2-1.4 °Brix in the two marc and paper treatments. The severity of B. cinerea infections in the anaerobic marc, aerobic marc and paper treatments were reduced to 12%, 3% and 2.2% of the control, respectively, in field assessments averaged over two consecutive harvests. Cover crops mulched in situ had similar effects to those of the organic mulches, increasing soil biological activity and reducing B. cinerea primary inoculum and the severity of B. cinerea infection in grapes at harvest (2006). Inter-row phacelia and ryegrass were mulched in winter 2005 and compared with a bare ground control, under 10-year-old Chardonnay vines in a ten-replicate randomized block design. Functional soil biological activity increased by 1.5-4.5 times in the two cover crop treatments compared with the control, an effect possibly related to elevated soil moisture in these treatments. This increase in soil moisture and soil biological activity increased vine debris degradation, reduced B. cinerea primary inoculum on the debris and decreased B. cinerea severity at flowering (December 2005) and harvest (April 2006). These results show the potential of organic mulches and cover crops mulched in situ to enhance soil ecosystem services and improve the sustainability of viticultural practices.

[en] COPULA MODELS FOR STREAMFLOW SCENARIO SIMULATION / [pt] MODELOS DE CÓPULAS PARA SIMULAÇÃO DE CENÁRIOS HIDROLÓGICOS

GUILHERME ARMANDO DE ALMEIDA PEREIRA 26 April 2018 (has links)
[en] Many streamflow scenario simulation models, which are needed for the planning and operation of energy systems, are built on rigid assumptions. This may limit their ability to represent nonlinear dependencies and/or nonstandard distribution functions. Copulas overcome these drawbacks and represent a flexible tool for modeling multivariate distributions. They enable the modeling of the marginal behavior of variables separately from the dependence structure of a random vector. Moreover, they can represent any type of association. This thesis is composed of three working papers, wherein copula-based models are proposed, objectifying the simulation of streamflow scenarios. In the first working paper, a periodic spatial copula model is proposed to simulate multivariate streamflow scenarios. The main contributions include periodic extension of the spatial vine copulas; a distinct reduction in the number of parameters; and the development of a multivariate nonlinear model for streamflow scenario generation that incorporates time dependence, spatial dependence, and seasonal variation, and accounts for the dimensionality of the problem (high number of hydroelectric power plants). In the second working paper, some modifications are made to the periodic spatial model, resulting in lower complexity without the loss of performance. In the third working paper, a methodology based on the vine copula is proposed to model the temporal dependence structures in a univariate periodic streamflow time series. Among the contributions, the construction of a nonlinear version of the periodic autoregressive model (PAR(p)) is highlighted. The possibility of modeling linear and nonlinear effects and the flexibility of modeling the monthly marginal distributions are highlighted as well. This model does not simulate negative values.

Approches nouvelles des modèles GARCH multivariés en grande dimension / New approaches for high-dimensional multivariate GARCH models

Poignard, Benjamin 15 June 2017 (has links)
This document contributes to high-dimensional statistics for multivariate GARCH processes. First, the author proposes a new dynamic called vine-GARCH for correlation processes parameterized by an undirected graph called vine. The proposed approach directly specifies positive definite matrices and fosters parsimony. The author provides results for the existence and uniqueness of stationary solution of the vine-GARCH model and studies its asymptotic properties. He then proposes a general framework for penalized M-estimators with dependent processes and focuses on the asymptotic properties of the adaptive Sparse Group Lasso regularizer. The high-dimensionality setting is studied when considering a diverging number of parameters with the sample size. The asymptotic properties are illustrated through simulation experiments. Finally, the author proposes to foster sparsity for multivariate variance covariance matrix processes within the latter framework. To do so, the multivariate ARCH family is considered and the corresponding parameterizations are estimated thanks to penalized ordinary least square procedures.

Development at 18th & Vine: understanding problems and formulating strategies for the future

Giesler, Cole January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Richard Farnan / Redevelopment of the 18th and Vine neighborhood has long been a goal of community leaders in Kansas City. Through the redevelopment there is an opportunity to restore pride to an impoverished area once considered the center of black life in the city. During segregation the area around 18th and Vine was famous for its baseball, jazz, and nightlife. However, the area slowly fell into decay. Since the 1980s there has been a renewed focus on the redevelopment of the area with major additions including: museums, music clubs, restaurants, and space for retail. Difficulty in finding tenants for the new retail space has lead to an uncertainty about how to proceed with the development. Understanding the failure to attract retail space to the area is a potential guide for future successful development around 18th and Vine. Lessons learned from African American community development include the need to define the community accurately (Dorius 2009), utilize community organizations (Dorius 2009), encourage residential empowerment (Dorius 2009), create economic self-sufficiency (Moore 2005, Katz 2004), encourage middle class black migration (Sampson 2009), and limit the negative effects of gentrification (Kirkland 2008). These lessons along with information gained in the studies of Overtown in Miami, Florida and Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee were applied to the information about 18th and Vine identifying issues associated with redevelopment of the community. New design strategies and guidelines were developed utilizing the understanding of why the area around 18th and Vine decayed and why new development has thus far failed. A combination of socio-economic and physical strategies is needed to make more informed decisions about future development. The physical strategies are proposed as alternative frameworks of focusing on the core, expanding to the south, and expanding to the west.

Evaluating sex pheromone monitoring as a tool in the integrated management of vine mealybug, Planococcus ficus (signoret) (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) / M.J. Kotze

Kotze, Maria Johanna January 2006 (has links)
The vine mealybug, Planococcus ficus (Signoret) (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) is a pest with significant economic impact on the grape growing industry in South Africa and other parts of the world. With the isolation and synthesizing of the vine mealybug sex pheromone in 2001, new control options for the integrated management of the vine mealybug have been created. The status of sex pheromone monitoring as a tool in the integrated management of the vine mealybug has been evaluated from different perspectives. A significant quantitative difference in male vine mealybug trap catch numbers has been observed between wine and table grape vineyards and results indicated that there were differences in the susceptibility of grape cultivars to vine mealybug. Currently, the delta trap design is the accepted trap design for vine mealybug monitoring. No studies have yet been conducted to determine the optimum trap parameters like size or design. Population pressure may have an influence on the qualitative efficiency of various trap designs. The basis for degree-day forecasting models has been established adequately. However, refinements need to be done and the incorporation of factors such as humidity and regionality also need to be considered. Daily maximum temperatures fluctuating around the upper developmental threshold temperature for prolonged periods of time seemed to suppress population numbers. Different vineyard management practices exist for wine and table grape production. While an action threshold of 65 vine mealybug males per trap per two-week period seems an acceptable threshold for table grape production, it may not be appropriate for wine grape (or raisin grape) production. Using sex pheromone traps for population monitoring is a valid technique in the arsenal of management tactics against the vine mealybug. However, refinements and validation of research results must be done further to build credibility into the monitoring system. / Thesis (M. EFEITO DA APLICAÇÃO DE UM ANÁLOGO DE BRASSINOSTERÓIDE SOBRE A MATURAÇÃO DA UVA „NIÁGARA ROSADA‟

Sozim, Marcello 28 February 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2017-07-25T19:29:48Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcello Sozim.pdf: 1079256 bytes, checksum: 79b54d3f5f6c6db5dbe3158437347586 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-02-28 / The grape is considered the most important fruit in the world economy and its quality is directly related to its point of maturity. The mechanisms that regulate their maturation are still poorly understood despite the great effort to this end. Recently, evidence from genetic studies revealed that brassinosteroids, plant hormones recently discovered, appear to be involved in the maturation of grapes. Thus the aim of this study was to assess the effect of different concentrations of an analogue of brassinosteroid the BIOBRAS-16 (BB-16), on the maturation of 'Niágara Rosada' grapes. Two experiments were conducted, one in 2009/10 and another in the 2010/11 season, in a commercial vineyard in the city of Ponta Grossa - PR. In the first experiment were tested at concentrations of 0, 0.1, 0.5, 5.0 and 50 mg L-1 BB-16 applied to different bunches, at 4 times every 7 days from the stadium of compact clusters . In the second experiment were tested at concentrations of 0, 0.5, 5.0 and 50 mg L-1 BB-16 applied in different berries from the same bunch, at 4 times every 7 days from the stadium in compact clusters . The design was a randomized block design with four replications for the 2009 harvest and 10 repetitions for 2010. BB-16 at a concentration of 5.0 mg L-1 significantly promoted the anticipation of the beginning of pigmentation of the berries in about 5 days for both seasons and provides a larger percentage of light colored berries and smaller berries in stages early maturation, indicating a higher production of anthocyanins. BB-16 also caused the increased diameter, length and weight of berries in season 2010, when the treatments were applied in the same cluster. In relation to soluble solids, the concentration of 5.0 mg L-1 BB-16 caused significant increases in berry in 2009. This same concentration also caused a higher soluble solids / acidity and a possible anticipation of the harvest. Titratable acidity and pH were not affected by BB-16, in both seasons. This study highlights the need for more studies on the effect of BRs, not only when applied over the berries, but also on the leaves. Also, the need to test new concentrations and its interaction with other plant hormones. BB-16 was shown to be an interesting tool for increasing productivity and quality of grapes.
