A mapping of the ethical, cultural and psychological aspects of attitudes towards Cosmetic Surgery Tourism

Cui, Yu Fan, Kalaridi, Maria, Lita, Andreea January 2022 (has links)
This qualitative research maps the attitudes of the cosmetic surgery tourism stakeholders towards the phenomenon from their ethical, cultural and psychological aspects. Utilitarianism, media culture and mental health state that leads to the decision to experience cosmetic tourism, inform the investigation of the aforementioned aspects. There is a pronounced socio-cultural pressure affecting the motive to travel for cosmetic services, combined with the mental health issues ascending largely from culturally prescribed norms. The authors, by utilizing the constructivist genre of grounded theory, established conclusive evidence that a certain amount of emotional well-being does stem from cosmetic surgery, as long as the societal beauty standards are not solely what drove this decision, in the long run. Thus, the postoperative eudaimonia is temporary, and in order to gain physical and psychological benefits from this medical tourism experience in the long term, a positive aging shift in the perception and operations of cosmetic surgery tourism is deemed as necessary, as the findings of this research demonstrate. Finally, future research opportunities should be directed towards the implications of cosmetic surgery tourism on evolution and the establishment of biohacking as a large share of the offered cosmetic tourism services.

Synliggörandet av Boken kommer : den visuella marknadsföringen och synen på de äldre användarna / The visibility of Boken kommer : the Visual marketing and the view of the older user

Skoglund, Madeleine January 2022 (has links)
Mass media can affect people how we view the world and its population and it can thus create stereotypes. Today, older people are healthier and live longer than they did twenty years ago, and this can lead to them living a more active life. Libraries today need to change their view of the older user in order to be able to offer the right service. The purpose of this survey is to, through an image analysis, study how public libraries in Sweden visually market the library service Boken kommer, which is a special shut-in service where the library staff delivers literature and other media to the users in their own home, and how the older users are portrayed in the images on Instagram. What relationships are expressed in connection with the marketing of the library service and in what way is the older user embodied?  With the help of relationship marketing, different relationships were identified that were embodied in the visual images and with the support of the concept ageism, stereotypes could be identified in the material. The results showed that it is literature and the personal contact with the librarians that stand out and that the healthy elderly is a frequent stereotype that is conveyed though marketing.

Lundström, Anna January 2022 (has links)
The aim of the study is to explore how social categories, with focus on genderand age, is constructed in the social documentation which is a central part ofthe officially arranged elderly care in Sweden. The analysis consists of a discourseanalysis and has a standpoint in feminist theories about performativityand respectability. The analysis consists of a text analysis of case files and howdiscourses about social categories emerge in the texts. The case files are writtenin a standardized form which is central to the structure of the documentation. The study examines the following questions 1) how is the users of elderlycare and their relatives positioned through the discourse that emerges in thecase files? 2) how is the discourse in the case files a part of doing gender andage as social categories? The study shows that the case files are reproducing stereotyped gender rolesand positions “the elderly” by differencing them from other adults throughconceptions about characteristics and (the lack of) abilities. Women’s andmen’s needs are described differently whereas abilities and strategies areprominent in the women’s case files. The respectable narrative emerges in thedescription of women wanting to perform some of the workload which is absentin case files about men. The moral responsibility of relatives is reinforcedby the description about their care work or the absence of it. Male relatives arementioned in the case files prominently in the lack of female relatives. In thisway both masculinity and femininity are constructed through the implied valuesthat is attributed men versus women in the texts. A clear medical discourseemerges in the needs assessments. The assessment texts reformulate the descriptionsof needs and they are instead formulated as facts which reinforcethe medical discourse. In final, this study shows that users of elderly care andABSTRACT10their relatives are positioned from both gender and age and that these categoriesare integrated with each other. I draw the conclusion that age is a usefulcomplement to the theory of respectability and its importance in the narrativeof expression and assessment of a person’s needs.

Äldres upplevelse av social isolering under Covid-19 pandemin : Systematisk litteraturstudie

Lycketorn, Jenny January 2022 (has links)

Det osynliga våldet : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av nyhetsrapporteringen om våld i äldres parrelationer / The Invisible Violence : A qualitative content analysis of news reporting regarding intimate partner violence in elderly couples

Lindström, Emilia January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to gain knowledge about how the news media reports on intimate partner violence among elderly couples. The focus was on studying how the violence is portrayed and explained and how perpetrators, victims and their relationships are portrayed in news articles. The study is based on an understanding that the media's portrayal of the violence affects the public's perception of the violence. Based on this, the study aims to gain increased knowledge about the image of violence in the elderly’s couple relationships that is communicated to the public through news media.  This qualitative study is based on a total of 33 news articles published between January 2019 and March 2022 in the Swedish newspapers Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Expressen and Aftonbladet. The results show that the media’s reporting is mainly about lethal violence. The violence is portrayed as individual and isolated events, where an understanding of the violence as domestic violence is absent. The media's descriptions of perpetrators, victims and their relationships lead to that they are presented according to ageist and stereotypical images of the elderly.

Våld i nära relation mot äldre : En kvalitativ studie om biståndshandläggarnas erfarenhet av arbetet med våld i nära relation mot äldre / Intimate partner violence against elderly : A qualitative study about social workers experience in working with intimate partner violence against elderly

Önal, Melisa January 2024 (has links)
Intimate partner violence is an international issue that also exists in Sweden. The elderly on the other hand, can tend to be excluded from this context as the focus in a lot of cases can be on younger people. Violence against elderly can be categorized into five categories which are psychological violence, physical violence, economic/material violence, sexual violence and neglect. Those who work with elderly encounter intimate partner violence against elderly and therefore knowledge about the subject is important. Sweden is one of eight countries that belong to the torontodeclaration, where the aim is to increase awareness of intimate partner violence against the elderly. The purpose of this study is to investigate and discuss the social workers experience in working with elderly people who are exposed to intimate partner violence. In the study, attention is paid to the measures and efforts that exist for the target group and mapping of violence intimate partner violence against elderly. The social workers work with the elderly who are exposed to the violence is also part of the study. Empirical data has been obtained through semi-structured interviews with four social workers within the same Swedish municipality. Furthermore, the empirical data has been analyzed through theories, discretion and ageism. Previous research has also been part of empirical analyses. The results show that there are various measures and efforts against elderly who are exposed to intimate partner violence, but that they are not always adapted to the older target group. For example, roughly half of Sweden's sheltered accommodation for victims of violence can accommodate people with walkers. The results also indicate that mapping intimate partner violence against the elderly is mainly done through a screening form and that it can also be picked up during home visits. Through the results, it is noticed that aid workers feel that working with the target group can be difficult at first, that they can feel unsafe and insecure. They also point out that a difficulty can be that they rarely meet the elderly alone. Finally, it is highlighted that there are more opportunities for social workers in the work with the target group, compared to before, and that intimate partner violence is more talked about in the workplace.

Elderly people's digital competence : is it better than we think?

Malmgren, Isabell, Floding, Ella January 2024 (has links)
Everyone is in some way affected by today’s digitalization but for some it is more difficult than others. Elderly people tend to have a higher risk of being excluded if they lack the crucial skills to be a part of the digital society. These skills are often referred to with the word “digital competence”. This study aims to explore the digital competence of elderly people and give a deeper understanding for how they see and experience their digital competence, what factors affect it and how this can relate to digital inclusion and ageism. The study is done in the context of smartphones. Interviews and an in-person survey were conducted to help answer the study’s questions. The oral survey aimed to gain a better understanding of elderly people’s actual digital competence while the interviews focused on giving a deeper insight into how elderly people experience their own digital competence. The results of the study show that many elderly people have a level of digital competence that is high enough for an everyday use of smartphones. They also seem to have a good understanding of their strengths and weaknesses related to digital competence and interaction with smartphones. A number of factors for digital competence were identified and discussed in regard to how they might partly be a result of ageism. It feels necessary to note the importance of continued efforts in including elderly in the digitalization and make sure there are places where those in need of help and support can receive it.

The Greater Implications of Self-Perceptions of Aging Among Younger Adults: Results from the Socially Nutritious Volunteer Training Program

Cobble, Ashlyn 01 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
The rapidly growing rate of the older adult population has created a need to better understand younger adults’ self-perceptions of aging and current trends of ageism. The purpose of this secondary data analysis research project was to determine changes, if any, in participants’ self-perception of aging after the Socially Nutritious facilitator or nutrition ambassador volunteer training, which aims to develop knowledge and skills related to aging trends, older adult nutrition, preventing ageism, and communication and educational considerations when working with older adults. Findings indicate that participants with more frequent interactions with older adults had a more positive perception of their aging at pre-test than those with less frequent interactions. However, these differences diminished at post-test. Training that includes information about healthy aging, as well as addressing ageism, may lead to a more positive self-perception of aging.
