The idea of creating Santa Montanha’s Sanctuary, and the village where it is located, originates from narratives about Saint Mary’s apparitions, based on reports of three children from Guiricema – a town located on the countryside of Minas Gerais state – in the nineteen sixties. This religious world, strictly based on Catholicism, was created by the people who lived in the surroundings of the hill where the sanctuary was built. Together, they left their homes and formed a new community, creating a world/cosmos ruled directly by Saint Mary and Baby Jesus themselves. This study analyses the construction of this peculiar world, based on Peter Berger and Thomas Luckman´s theory of the social construction of reality, considering it a process of human activity that allows us to develop and create a world, keeping it functional.

Fortin-Otis, Alex-Anne 17 June 2024 (has links)

Aparições de Nossa Senhora: mensagens e peregrinações na contemporaneidade / Apparitions of Nossa Senhora: Messages and Pilgrimages in contemporary

Sales, Lilian Maria Pinto 17 February 2009 (has links)
The thesis analyses Our Ladys appearances in Brazil, trying to understand the social and symbolic process supporting the creation of collective beliefs about these appearances, a process that always start with personal witness about the appearances of Our Lady. In order to analyze that, we realize a case study in the city of Jacareí, São Paulo state. The thesis reveals the process in which these appearances occur, where different factors are fundamental. Among them we shall focus: 1) the relations and connections involving individuals and groups, inserting the apparitions in a net of Mary´s demonstrations, like pilgrimages; 2) the Catholic Church role in the production of ideas and beliefs which give legitimacy to the appearances; 3) the symbolic molding of theses appearances, which are fundamental to that legitimacy; 4) the presence of long terms symbolic elements. Each one of these topics was developed in a separate chapter.

La Vierge, la guerre, la vérité: approche anthropologique et transnationale des apparitions mariales rwandaises / War, truth and the Virgin Mary: an anthropological and transnational approach of the rwandan marian aparitions

Brébant, Emilie 21 June 2011 (has links)

La monja azul : the political and cultural ramifications of a 17th-century mystical transatlantic journey

Nogar, Anna María 20 December 2010 (has links)
This project sets forth a Mexican American cultural studies treatment of a US Southwestern legend known as the Lady in Blue (La monja azul). The legend is derived from17th-century religious memoriales (accounts) that narrate the miraculous apparition of a living cloistered Spanish nun, Sor María de Agreda, to the Jumano tribe of western New Mexico between the years 1620-1630. However, the Lady in Blue's conversion of the Jumanos was only the first of many recurring appearances she would make in the Americas and Europe over the next three hundred and seventy years. In the American Southwest, northern Mexico and Spain, stories about the apparating nun resurface and are reshaped in response to the demands of their contexts. Her narrative is transatlantic both in terms of what it recounts, and in terms of where it is recounted. She is not only represented on both sides of the ocean, but her portrayal almost always has to do with her being on both side of the ocean. The Lady in Blue narrative brings together dialogues on conquest, both secular and religious, dialogues on the significance of the female body and the feminine written word, and dialogues on the negotiation of space, proximity and identity. Extant research on Lady in Blue focuses on the components of her story as discrete entities, inadvertently divorcing related histories and legends from one another. 20th-century historians have read the account as a medieval holdover in Franciscan mission writing; folklorists as isolated Indo-Hispano accounts; and literary critics as individual anecdotes in twentieth-century literature. In contrast, this dissertation focuses on is the continuity of the narrative-- the way a series of historical figures and documents capture the Lady in Blue as she moves from New Mexico, to Spain, and back to the Franciscan missions of the Southwest, where she is viewed as a proto- or co-missionary. From the missions, the traditions, legends, and folklore about her grew and were contended, resulting in the contemporary dramatic works, novels, short stories and poems about the Lady in Blue. / text

Entitetkontinuitet : en religionspsykologisk tolkning / Entity Continuity : a Psychology of Religion Interpretation

Duppils, Sara January 2009 (has links)
“Entity continuity” refers to recurrent transcendent experiences related to certain places (“hauntings”). The experiences are often interpreted to be due to discarnate spirits or folklore entities. Although the entity continuity experience can be regarded as religious experience, they have yet to be fully explored in science of religion. The purpose of this paper was to describe entity continuity experiences and map out the scientific discussion in order to provide a psychology of religion that provides an understanding of the phenomena. For this purpose a literature study of theories of jungian psychology, parapsychology, and described experiences was undertaken. The material was thereafter analyzed comparatively. The results show that entity continuity experiences can be understood as a form of animism and that the experiences are colored by culture, context, and visual impression. The material also shows that experiences at locations that have played host to entity continuity and poltergeist experiences are equivalent. An altered state of consciousness, a special type of personality, and distinctive environmental stimuli, the atmosphere or “feeling”, is necessary for the occurrence of these experiences. The “percipients” and/or “agents” psychic material is reflected in the atmosphere and becomes expressed as psychic manifestations in the form of entity experiences.
