Distinguishing the senses : individuation and classification / Distinguer les sens : individuation et classificationLe Corre, Francois 11 December 2014 (has links)
This Dissertation is concerned with two theoretical issues about the senses. The first issue focuses on the question how the senses are to be individuated (regardless of the way one commonly conceive of them). The strategy is to test the ability of the criteria of individuation available in the literature to withstand objections. I argue that the senses are to be individuated in terms of the environmental properties they give access to, and show that this criterion can withstand all of the objections it has received. The second issue is the question why do we believe in exactly five senses? On the basis of observations from anthropology and comparative linguistics, I argue that this belief result from what we been taught. In addition, this Dissertation contains two supplementary studies. The first study focuses on the question how people ordinarily distinguish among the senses. I argue that people are sensitive both to the types of environmental properties the senses give access to and to the body parts they are attached to. The second study is concerned with the phenomenon of sensory substitution that has long been considered as a challenge for the individuation of the senses. I argue that sensory substitution is not a challenge of this kink because the type of environmental information processed by a sensory substitution device is metamodal, i.e. accessible through any sensory modality

Palestinian Muslims converting to Christianity : effective evangelistic methods in the West BankDunning, Craig A. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis provides the findings of an explanatory case study that utilized
elements of ethnographic research to discover effective evangelistic methods
being practiced among Palestinian Muslims in the West Bank. With the
assistance of gatekeepers, twenty-four former Muslims were asked to explain
how they were evangelized, with a particular focus on evangelistic methodology,
the barriers to faith the respondents encountered, solutions to those barriers, and
motivations to consider conversion.
This qualitative study follows the research model of Thom Rainer (2001) by
asking those who have actually converted to describe the things that were helpful
in the process of their coming to faith. For a theoretical framework it utilizes a
nuance of McKnight’s (2002) theory of conversion with an emphasis on crisis
providing an intersection of the natural and supernatural for the purpose of
conversion.
This thesis investigates examples of effective evangelism within the context of
the West Bank, giving thorough consideration to Palestinian Nationalism and
Islam as overarching cultural influences. It considers fruitful practices being
practiced globally among Muslims, comparing those with what was found being
practiced in the West Bank. The advocates represented in this report were
primarily Palestinians born and raised in the West Bank, with the exception of
three messianic Jewish Israelis and an American missionary. Additionally, they
were evangelicals who generally utilized a contextually sensitive, traditional
mission approach rather than an Insider model. The end result is a knowledge base that can be helpful for future evangelism
of Muslims in the West Bank or other similar contexts. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Science of Religion and Missiology / unrestricted

The nature of the church in some post-christendom models and according to some authors in the New Testament : a comparative study with missiological implicationsWeyers, Mario 04 1900 (has links)
In this thesis the researcher has investigated which of the two concepts: believing before belonging or belonging before believing, is a more accountable perspective in regards to ministry in post-Christendom society.
With the final stages of the modern period the power of hegemonic ideologies is coming to an end as people identify less with grand ideologies and more with subcultures related to technology and social and economic networks of different kinds. The post-Christendom phase has begun and is radically challenging Christendom notions of ministry.
We have to assume that among post-Christians the familiarity with Christian concepts will fade as the decline of Christendom has meant that Christianity has been losing its status as a lingua franca, only to be understood in the long run, by those who are professing Christians. It is therefore important that the church will anticipate longer journeys towards faith and not move on to disciple new converts too quickly. Post- Christendom evangelization will consequently take longer, start further back and move more slowly.
In the context of post-Christendom, knowledge of Christianity is rather limited and people need to come to an understanding of what Christianity entails. For those seekers, exploratory participation at first is safer than making a definite commitment.
Postmodern society is also suspicious of institutions and eager to find whether Christian beliefs also work in practice and not only in theory. Therefore is belonging before believing very much necessary for seekers to test whether Christians live out in their communities what they claim to be true? / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. Le "faire-semblant" en procès : examen et défense de la philosophie de Kendall L. Walton / The Trial of Make-Believe : Examining and Defending Kendall L. Walton's PhilosophySchuppert, Guillaume 25 June 2019 (has links)
The ordinary concept of fiction raises ontological, epistemological, logical and aesthetical questions. Kendall Walton's Mimesis as Make-Believe (1990) introduced a groundbreaking theory on fiction and representation. According to his main claim, the practice of appreciating representational works of art shares significant similarities with the practice of playing games of make-believe. According to Walton, both activities rely on the concept of fictionality, the fact of being true in the fiction, which is understood in terms of prescriptions to imagine. My dissertation consists of an introduction to Walton's philosophy, a commentary of Mimesis' theory of make-believe and a defense against their critics. The first part provides a presentation of Walton's philosophical methodology and discusses one of his most famous articles, "Categories of Art" (1970). The second part provides a detailled commentary of Mimesis, based on a confrontation between Nelson Goodman's theory of representation and Walton's one. The third part is dedicated to analyse the criticisms that are encountered by the theory. A first set of criticisms comes from philosophers admitting the fundamental principles of the theory : those are Gregory Currie (1990), Peter Lamarque and Stein Olsen (1994), or Jerrold Levinson (1993). I argue that those objections are groundless. Another set of criticisms comes from philosophers attempting to undermine the fundamental principles of the theory : those are Stacie Friend (2008), Derek Matravers (2014), or even Walton himself (2015). According to me, those objections are on the right tracks if correctly understood, but fall short from being decisive. Nevertheless, I argue they should lead us to develop a research on the semiotic aspects of fictionality.

Garand, Marie-Eve 05 1900 (has links)
The thesis questions the conditions of listening concerning the testimonies of people who lived a sectarian experience, as well as the ethical and methodological issues arising from the way literature proposes to understand the telling of these people. A literature review shows that the main theoretical frameworks used to explain the sectarian (alienation, mental manipulation, addiction) determine the way the telling of these people is listened. Thereby, the meaning of the sectarian directs not only our understanding of people, but it also outlines the conditions of the listening. The premise of the dissertation is that the introduction of the « dit-mention » (the mension of the telling) of the believe as an interpretative intersection leads to develop a listening concerning both the speaking subject and the dimension of the being. From a theorization of believe as a movement of the living distinct from religion, spirituality, belief and mysticism, the dissertation moves the problematic of a sectarian experience from its polemic structure to give full value to the telling of people. Thus, by setting the listening on its symbolic side, that is in a way that takes into account the subject's relation to the Other, the meaning produced by an act of listening to a believe does not rely anymore on an external meaning to explain and report a sectarian experience. It is produced by the binding of the signifiers together, which opens a research space where something of the subject can happen. The hypothesis of a subject « à croire sur parole » (which words must be believed) then offers a basis for a differential act of listening, since it allows the working out of an effective knowledge, a knowledge that moves, surprises, revives the subject.

a libertação, conversão e catequese aparecem no texto.
nossos dias. / Liberation, Conversion and Catechesis have the purpose, in John 9, to
identify the itinerary of a person born blind in order to profess publicly his adhesion of
faith to Jesus, as the Son of Man, in a time of exclusion from the synagogue.
The liberation from laws and rules not directed towards defending life and,
therefore, not according to the will of God, with regard to an excluding situation, takes
courage after having opened eyes and mind.
The first chapter considers the gospel according to the community of John as
a whole, pointing out its main characteristics, its relation to the Jewish Feasts and the
Sabbath. Chapter two deepens the study of the narration about the healing of the
man born blind so as to make clear how liberation, conversion and catechesis
become evident in the text. The narration presents the process of adhesion to Jesus
as the Son of Man, showing how, accordingly, Jesus has to be seen exactly like he
is. Therefore, the person who professes faith in Him, even in times of punishment
and exclusion by the Jews and Pharisees, needs having his eyes gradually opened.
The understanding of who Jesus is begins with doing what he orders, confronting
courageously the questionning by the group of Jews Pharisees and not fearing to
express an opinion contrary to theirs, even at the risk of punishment. The man born
blind now healed, who lets himself be illuminated by Jesus, is a model for the
community. Chapter three shows how the text of John 9 can be used for catechesis
and how the community of John, the Jewish and the ancient Christian communities
developed their catechetical process. Based on the itinerary of liberation and
conversion made by the man born blind now healed, indicative elements for the
catechesis of adults in our days are presented.

A master’s euphonium recital and program notesUnger, Nichole January 1900 (has links)
Master of Music / Music, Theatre, and Dance / Steve Maxwell / This master’s report focuses on the history, brief analysis, and pedagogy of the four works performed on February 15, 2016 for the author’s Master’s Recital.
The first chapter explains the work Pantomime by Philip Sparke. It contains a short biography of Philip Sparke, an in-depth background on the composition of the work, and a theoretical and pedagogical look at the piece.
The second chapter centers on Fantasia by Gordon Jacob. This brief biography will explore Jacob’s compositional output and legacy, and the theoretical analysis will focus on his use of chromatics and the interplay between the piano and the euphonium. The pedagogical analysis will focus on performance techniques and practice.
The third chapter is devoted to Blue Lake Fantasies, an unaccompanied work for solo euphonium by David Gillingham. The biography will focus on Gillingham’s contribution to euphonium repertoire, specifically and the history of where and why this work was written. There will be a concise theoretical analysis followed by a heavily pedagogical analysis, which will break down the performance techniques used in each of the five movements.
The final chapter of the report is about David Werden’s euphonium arrangement for two euphoniums and piano of Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms by Simone Mantia. This chapter will present a short biography of Mantia explaining his historical significance, a brief theoretical analysis, and a pedagogical analysis that focuses on the duet aspect of this piece.

The nature of the church in some post-christendom models and according to some authors in the New Testament : a comparative study with missiological implicationsWeyers, Mario, 1973- 04 1900 (has links)
