Engaging with Diversity in Hospitable Spaces : A Study on Lived Experiences of Community Theatrewith Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Leeds

Svenstrup Grant, Anne January 2021 (has links)
An emphasis in political debates and much print media in the United Kingdom (UK) on perceived issues with ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity has contributed to a narrative of worry and fear. Despite such hostile discourse, people find ways of living together with diversity every day.  The encounters which I am concerned with in the following degree project are taking place through community theatre with Mafwa Theatre in Leeds where women from asylum seeker, refugee, and wider communities are socialising and cooperating over fun and simple drama activities. The purpose of this thesis is to better understand the different participants’ lived experiences of the theatre space, how they view their role in the group, and how they perceive diversity in the group. The research questions are explored with qualitative research methods of individual interviews with Mafwa members, the facilitators, and a volunteer, participant observation during the weekly drama sessions, and document analysis of printed, online, and audio materials. With this degree project, I aim to contribute to the discussion about everyday multiculturalism and living with diversity in the UK. The theoretical framework consists of the concept of hospitality which helps me explore how hospitable spaces are shaped and negotiated by different contributors, and conviviality which embraces the complexity of social relations without romanticising them and can help us reach a better understanding of how to live together without a fear for each other’s differences.  The findings show that the different participants view the drama group as a hospitable community of acceptance and respect within a hostile environment for asylum seekers and refugees at the national level. The space offers a well-needed opportunity for the women to have fun, develop their creative skills, and escape day-to-day concerns. Moreover, the study shows that besides being proud co-producers of artistic practice, all participants are also active co-creators of shaping the hospitable space and a ‘convivial culture’. Finally, despite misunderstandings and disagreements in the group, the participants express having bonded over similarities and learned from differences rather than describing diversity as something to fear.

The public realm of covered food halls as the driver of a sense of place and conviviality : A case study of three covered food halls in Rotterdam

Impens, Yuri January 2017 (has links)
In the modern consumer economy, experience is playing an increasingly important role. We are looking to buy a special but authentic experience, in particular when it comes to food consumption. These developments have led to a resurface and reinvention of the traditional covered market hall. New versions of the conventional concept have been created, and these covered food halls put emphasis on creating an attractive public realm for the visitor. However, the different versions of the covered food halls have different public realms with varied effects on the sense of place and conviviality for the visitor. The aim of this research is to find out what the drivers of the public realm of the modern covered food hall are, and to analyze how these influence, and can possibly improve the sense of place and conviviality. Three case studies of new covered food halls in Rotterdam provided valuable insights. From the theories it became apparent that there are four drivers of the public realm when it comes to the creation of a sense of place and conviviality: economical, social, cultural and political. The case studies showed the same result, however it has come to show that the tangible public realm is first and foremost the result of the intangible organization behind the covered food halls, relating to the political driver of the public realm. The structure and the aim of the organization determine the other 3 drivers, resulting in the physical structure of the public realm, and the activities that take place in the space. Within the physical realm, elements such as personalization, flexibility and transparency have shown to be crucial to create a sense of place and conviviality. The organization behind the hall also influences the activities that take place inside and around the hall. In order to possibly improve the public realm of the covered food hall, it is therefore important to start with finding a fitting organization for the aims and goals the covered food halls has as part of the public realm.

D&I Representation in the EU : A Closer Look at the Content Shared on Twitter During the EUDiversity Month 2021

Marozzi, Marianna January 2022 (has links)
Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) is a topic of increasing importance in the private andpublic sectors. The reason behind growing investments in D&I can be found in thebeneficial effects of embracing and implementing D&I policies for public and privateorganisations. Indeed, D&I has multiple positive effects in terms of economic returns, productivity, creativity, attractiveness, reputation, employees’ wellness, and visibility. In May 2021, the Directorate General (DG) of the European Commission specialised injustice, consumer rights and gender equality (DG Justice) organised the EU DiversityMonth, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of D&I in the workplace. Theprogramme included many initiatives, and part of the campaign took place on socialmedia. #EUDiversityMonth and #UnionOfEquality were the two hashtags dedicated tothe campaign on social media by DG Justice. This research analyses the content sharedon Twitter using these two hashtags during the entire month of May 2021 by theofficial account of Helena Dalli, EU Commissioner for Equality, and the official accountof the European Commission's Justice and Consumers DG. This sample represents agood reference for the analysis of D&I representation and EU social mediacommunication, despite the fact that a low number of tweets were posted, showing anunderuse of social media as a strategic tool for communication for social change.

[en] APPLICATION AND TEACHING OF APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE COLLECTIVE CONSTRUCTION OF ROOF STRUCTURES MADE OF TIED BAMBOOS AND RAW EARTH / [pt] APLICAÇÃO E ENSINO DE TECNOLOGIAS APROPRIADAS PARA A CONSTRUÇÃO COLETIVA DE ESTRUTURAS DE COBERTURA FEITAS DE BAMBUS AMARRADOS E TERRA CRUA

DANIEL MALAGUTI CAMPOS 19 January 2015 (has links)
[en] The present work, unfolding of the research developed between 2007 and 2009, reported in the master dissertation entitled Design of bamboo frame structures generated from minimal surfaces, has as main objective the implementation of models of roof structures developed by LILD (Laboratory Research in Free Design) on a scale and real context for community use. It happens by teaching simple and low environmental impact techniques in processes of collective construction using local materials and labor. Through the development of drawings, reduced physical models and collective constructive practice itself, we can get a dynamic exchange of knowledge between teachers and learners in which knowledge flows multidirectional way, feeds itself. The knowledge gained is evident in two phases: in the development of structures in the laboratory, it expands the repertoire of structural units of the LILD, and building them outside the walls of the university, because they bring real results both on the knowledge exchanged between those involved as the action of the physical and social environment on them.

Robles, Juan 25 September 2017 (has links)
Virtual storefronts, online sales, the enhancement of short and agroecological circuits of production through effective communication policies in social networks, are strategies that many small businesses are now using to value their traditional expertise, paradoxically based on proximity and direct treatment. this article analyzes the role of digital technologies in the re-signification and re-activation of small businesses and traditional markets. the use of digital technologies challenges Internet as an agent of deterritorialization and creation of global culture, in front of the presence of new forms of localization based on the emergence of new forms of conviviality, agroecology and healthy eating.

Paulo Felipe Teixeira Almeida 11 April 2014 (has links)
This research seeks to discuss an uncommon reflection about spirituality. The background for this reflection mostly takes place within the cosmopolitan urban context. The main goal of this research is to provide a dialogue between a representation of reality, from the urban context, through the analysis of a spirituality manifested in the sitcom Friends, and through the eyes of Leonardo Boff and his perspective on spirituality. Thus, if it is possible to sketch a vision of this, imagine someone in front of the TV, watching episodes of Friends with the indicated texts Boff in his hands. Better yet, imagine someone sitting next to Boff, both watching the hit series and sharing their perceptions in a friendly dialogue, both devoted to recognizing points of correlation between what the theologian thinks, says, and writes, and what composes the series in audio, image, and movement. This specific approach to Boffs work, Virtues: For Another Possible World, aims to create these unusual dynamics. There is dialogue, however, with several authors from different traditions, in addition to research on media/television culture and spirituality. This research sheds the assumption that you can find possibilities to understand television in its everyday representation. Similarly, it approaches the allusion that contemporary theological thinking seeks answers over a spirituality experienced in an urban and cosmopolitan environment. To represent this cosmopolitan environment, the research elects the sitcom Friends as a timely manifestation and representation of this reality that is ever so relevant to our way of life. At the other end, but with the expectation of a point of correlation, the research lists perspectives of the work and the thoughts of Leonardo in regards to spirituality. To do so, the research starts with general definitions of spirituality, and then a definition relevant for this research. It continues by providing a definition of what a sitcom is beyond the sitcom Friends. From this point on, proposals about spirituality are agreed on, namely implicit spirituality (traces/remnants of faith that survives not dependent on or committed to a tradition), explicit spirituality (religious formalities and legacies tied to ambiguous traditions of faith), and spirituality manifested (friendship/fellowship in elements such as hospitality, conviviality, and commensality present themselves to start and maintain themselves). In this last characterization of spirituality (manifested), the research seeks to understand and analyze, in the sitcom Friends, issues such as hospitality, conviviality, and commensality; and, following, a highlight of when these issues lead to another level of communion: marriage. Finally, a the research engages in a discussion and proposed (re)reading of the conduit, positioning and relationship of our faith communities in urban and cosmopolitan contexts.

Visibility, conviviality and active listening : A case study of an exogenous project in Africa´s last colony

Sánchez-Valladares Barahona, Celia January 2021 (has links)
The occupation of Western Sahara is a question of a forgotten colonization with a very limited framework of international recognition, media acknowledgment and talks. To break the remaining silence and invisibility, human rights activists have developed different initiatives, shedding light on the current situation of Western Sahara. This study investigates the Sahara Marathon campaign, an international sport event that has been developed in the Western Sahara refugee camps of Smara, El Aaiún and Auserd for twenty consecutive years.  Framing the Sahara Marathon as a case study, this degree project aims at inquiring into the potential impact and long-term implications of the international sport campaign, seeking “if” and “how” it contributes towards a social change and an end to the enforced invisibility of “Africa's last colony”, (Güell, 2015). In particular, this qualitative study examines the participatory approach and community engagement promoted through the campaign as well as the awareness-raising and dialogical processes triggered as a result of the Sahara Marathon sport event. The study is grounded on 23 in-depth interviews that have contributed to the external reliability of the research, underlining the reflections shared by organizers of the Sahara Marathon, drivers, freelancers, runners and most importantly human rights activists from Western Sahara. Findings reveal that the Sahara Marathon campaign raises awareness about the current situation in Western Sahara, contributing to a transnational acknowledgment of the conflict. The study also shows that active listening and convivial experiences are promoted throughout the campaign, dismantling stereotypes among communities coming from abroad and Saharawi people living in the refugee camps. In terms of participation, it has been concluded that the campaign uses a participation by consultation approach, needing a new model to showcase the utility and effectiveness of the event as well as to ensure its sustainability in the future.
