[en] This investigation aims at understanding the identity construction of a developing language teacher, as she takes up practitioner research as part of a pre-requisite for her academic work in a teacher development course. The teacher and I worked collaboratively to understand both the process of becoming a practitioner researcher and our involvement in it. The primary data of the study was generated through research interviews with an exploratory focus to understand the reflection process. The development of hybridity in Exploratory Practice enabled the data generated to constitute work for understanding for both practitioners intriguing puzzles. In the light of Interactional Sociolinguistics, the analysis concentrated on the (re)creation of the developing teacher s research trajectory, as well as the (re)construction of her exploratory identity. The discursive production of explanations and one chronicle in the form of stories was analyzed based on the coherence systems present in them. Along with the reflective trajectory of her stories, the teacher was discursively becoming a new member of the Exploratory Practice Community. It is important to highlight that the analysis did not only focus on the teacher s discourse actions, but also on mine; especially, as I was becoming more senior in this community and developing as a practitioner researcher. Practitioner research based on the inclusive principles of Exploratory Practice has provided opportunities for both practitioners to gain deeper understandings of the process of becoming researchers.

[en] LEARNING PROCESSES IN THE MENTORING TASK: NON-VIOLENCE ACTIVISTS WORKING TO UNDERSTAND IDENTITIES IN THE HUMANIST MOVEMENT / [pt] APRENDIZADOS NA TAREFA DE ORIENTAR: ATIVISTAS PELA NÃO VIOLÊNCIA TRABALHANDO PARA ENTENDER IDENTIDADES NO MOVIMENTO HUMANISTASABINE MENDES LIMA MOURA 09 October 2007 (has links)
do Movimento
Humanista no Rio de Janeiro, inclusive a autora desta
dissertação como pesquisadorapraticante,
está orientada pelos princípios da Prática Exploratória
(Allwright, 2003).
construídas as identidades
coletivas (Snow, 2001); c)
estrutura avaliativa secundária em narrativas (Antonio,
2004) e coerência global e
temática no estudo de narrativas (Agar e Hobbs, 1982). O
trabalho-para-entendimento
[en] This research, which includes all members of a Humanist
Movement team in
Rio de Janeiro, including the author of this dissertation
as a practitioner-researcher,
follows the principles of Exploratory Practice (Allwright,
2003). It represents work
for understanding how identities are co-constructed while
these people perform their
function as mentors, who are responsible for the
construction of work teams. The data
for the analysis have been constructed based on
Potentially Exploratory Activities
that are part of the team´s daily routine, as well as
field diary notes. These data have
generated narratives (Bastos, 2005) based on the learning
processes that each member
represented from their experience. For the analysis, the
following concepts were used:
a) identity in practice (Wenger, 1998); personal, social
and collective identities
(Snow, 2001); c) secondary evaluation structure in
narratives (Antonio, 2004) and
global and theme coherence in the study of narratives
(Agar and Hobbs, 1982). The
work for understanding has generated the proposed
understanding by which the
stories presented in this research served as a
compensation of the participants´
personal difficulties, besides having the role of
strengthening our collective identity
while shared. The data also suggests emerging themes such
as the question of
otherness, the question of internal hierarchy and image as
structuring reality (Cobos,
1999), besides highlighting discursive tendencies related
to the coherence of the
team´s action. The reflection generated through this work
enabled participants to raise
their awareness regarding their identity construction and
to create different
participation environments in joint reflection on their
attitudes and beliefs.

[en] AND YOU [TEACHER]... DO YOU LIKE LEARNING ENGLISH? CO-CONSTRUCTING UNDERSTANDING AND LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES ABOUT AUTONOMY IN AN EXPLORATORY CASE STUDY / [pt] AND YOU [TEACHER]... DO YOU LIKE LEARNING ENGLISH?: CONSTRUINDO OPORTUNIDADES DE APRENDIZAGEM E DE ENTENDIMENTOS SOBRE AUTONOMIA EM UM ESTUDO DE CASO EXPLORATÓRIOANDREA HOUARA LORDELLO LIMA 29 March 2010 (has links)
mesmas, discursivamente. / [en] This study searches deeper understandings of learner autonomy and of the
learning opportunities which were co-constructed by an (ex)student of English as
a Foreign Language and her (ex)teacher, who is also the author of this
dissertation. This case study was carried out in 2008 and during the first term of
2009, and was inspired by the author’s (Lordello L., 2008) former investigation in
which the two participants were, respectively, pupil and teacher, at a private
language school, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2007. Most of the weekly private
lessons were recorded, thus providing material for analysis in both studies.
Inspired by the theoretical-methodological framework of Exploratory Practice
(Allwright & Hanks, 2009), a selection of moments in one of the classes was
made, in which the interactional co-construction of both participants’ autonomies
was perceived. As the then student left the language school at the end of the first
semester of 2008, a meeting was arranged with her, so she would be able to
actively participate in the interpretation of the excerpts. These excerpts were then
analysed using a socio-interactional linguistics approach, based on some of
Goffman’s (1974) and of Gumperz’ (1992) concepts. The relevance of the
(ex)student’s and the teacher’s types of participation in the present research is
supported by the desire to better comprehend the multiple learning opportunities
and understandings which were co-constructed by them. The complex and
conflicting views which have emerged unveil a multi-faceted and plural world in
which the two participants discursively co-construct their autonomies and
themselves.

[pt] O MESTRE E O MONSTRO: CONSTRUÇÃO E RECONSTRUÇÃO DE ENTENDIMENTOS SOBRE AS RELAÇÕES E REPRESENTAÇÕES DO EU E DO OUTRO NA TURMA 1001EMERSON CARDOZO DAS NEVES 02 June 2017 (has links)

[en] LIFE IN THE CLASSROOM: WHERE EXPLORATORY PRACTICE AND PSYCHOANALYSIS MEET / [pt] A VIDA NA SALA DE AULA: PONTO DE ENCONTRO DA PRÁTICA EXPLORATÓRIA COM A PSICANÁLISEMARIA DE LOURDES DUARTE SETTE 27 April 2006 (has links)
documentos referidos acima,
levou-me a aproximar três discursos - a Prática
Exploratória, a Psicanálise e a
aula.
presentes no ambiente
e a postura
[en] The objective of this thesis was to enhance my
understanding about the
pedagogical relationship constructed between myself, as
teacher, and a group of
students taking a course in English as a foreign language
(EFL) in the corporation
where they work. In order to achieve this aim, I kept a
diary during the eight
months of the course. In addition to this diary, I also
analyzed the exploratory
potential generated by the pedagogical activities of the
students in the classroom
and the written messages sent by them to me. The perceived
interweaving of the
socio-historical and individual aspects, at a conscious
and unconscious level,
which are present in the utterances of the course
participants and registered in the
above-mentioned documents, led me to bring together three
discourses -
Exploratory Practice, Psychoanalysis and the Philosophy of
Language of Mikhail
Bakhtin - in order to understand more deeply the nature of
the pedagogical
relationship and of the quality of life in the classroom.
The data analysis also
enabled me to perceive the importance of paying attention
to the individualaffective
aspects present in the pedagogical environment. I address
the central
contribution of these aspects to the construction of the
loving nature of the
pedagogical relationship, which I identify as monological
and/or dialogical, based
on the relationships perceived by me in my pedagogic
practice. The intended
contribution of my thesis lies in approximating the
knowledge and reflective
posture of teachers oriented by Exploratory Practice to
the knowledge of Freud-
Lacan´s psychoanalysis about the human subject and to some
key concepts of the
Philosophy of Language. Thus, this thesis seeks to fill a
gap perceived in the field
of teaching English as a foreign language, on account of
the scarcity of theories
that derive from teacher-researchers´ professional
practice.

[pt] CONVERSAS EXPLORATÓRIAS SOBRE O PODER DE VETO NO ESPAÇO ESCOLAR: COCONSTRUÇÃO DE CAMINHOS PARA UMA APRENDIZAGEM DIALÓGICA / [en] EXPLORATORY CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THE POWER OF VETO IN THE SCHOOL SPACE: COCONSTRUCTION OF PATHS FOR DIALOGIC LEARNINGPATRICIA GRAEFF VIANA L RIBEIRO 10 May 2022 (has links)
O trabalho
A pesquisa ocorreu
[en] This research aims to seek understandings about the power of veto in the school
context and the paths that practitioners of the teaching-learning process can build
for dialogic learning. Aligned with the Exploratory Practice approach, I understand
students and teachers as practitioners of the teaching-learning process
(ALLWRIGHT and HANKS, 2009), since both play important roles in the process.
Some questions are central to guide my study: What is the power of veto? Who is
it practiced by? Why and in what way? What are the consequences of this power
for students and teachers? How are we to work in the face of power of veto? The
research is aligned with the concept of discourse that highlights the use of language
as social practice. Thus, it is in the relationship between discourse and society that
I analyzed the power of veto practiced and suffered by participants in the teachinglearning process, whether they are students or teachers, among others (MOITA
LOPES, 2003). Understanding that students have the ability to act as builders of
their own learning process (MILLER, CUNHA e ALLWRIGHT, 2020), it is
essential to engage students and teachers in order to seek understandings about coconstruction paths for dialogic learning. The research took place in a public school
in the state of Rio de Janeiro where I acted as a Portuguese language teacher in high
school classes. Data were generated by engaging in exploratory conversations with
participating students and teachers about their experiences in relation to the power
of veto. The conversations were audio-recorded for later transcription according to
the conventions referring to the Jefferson Conversation model (LODER, 2008). In
addition to its theoretical-methodological contributions, this study will be able,
above all, to stimulate the students capacity as protagonists as well as their
investigative attitude regarding the issues that are relevant to them.

[pt] EXPLORANDO FATORES QUE INFLUENCIAM COMO AS VISUALIZAÇÕES DE DADOS SÃO INTERPRETADAS POR NÃO ESPECIALISTAS / [en] UNCOVERING FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE HOW DATA VISUALIZATIONS ARE INTERPRETED BY NON-EXPERTSARIANE MORAES BUENO RODRIGUES 23 May 2022 (has links)
No segundo
No quarto estudo, criamos
[en] Data visualizations are increasingly common in traditional media and
social networks. However, the visualization literacy of the population did not
follow this growing popularity. It is necessary for those who create the charts
to assemble a visual communication that contains the necessary information
in an attractive and easy-to-understand way. By contrast, it is necessary for
those who consume them to capture information represented by the charts and
extract the analyses of what they see. The importance of visual literacy is the
ability to read a chart, i.e., look at a chart and identify relevant information,
trends, and outliers in a given scenario. In this work, we conducted four studies
to explore factors related to the success of visual data analysis. We identified
issues ranging from data distribution to formulating good questions to enrich
exploration. The first study discovered how people try to make sense of specific
data visualizations through questions they ask when they first encounter a
visualization. In the second study, we explored how data distributions can
affect the effectiveness and efficiency of data visualizations. In the third study,
we investigated when non-experts identify that particular visualization is
not adequate to answer a specific analysis question, when they make good
suggestions for changes to make these visualizations adequate, and when they
evaluated well the adequacy of some suggestions offered to them. In the
fourth study, we created a test to assess people s understanding of the applied
(answering analysis questions supported by a visualization) and conceptual
(questions about function and structure) aspects of data visualization. Our
results provide resources for developing of educational material and tools for
recommending data visualizations to answer specific data-relation questions.
An additional contribution of this work to the results of the studies was the
structuring of a unified list of different visualization tasks that we found in the
literature.

[pt] A CONSTRUÇÃO DISCURSIVA DE EMOÇÕES E CRENÇAS EM CONVERSAS EXPLORATÓRIAS / [en] THE DISCURSIVE CONSTRUCTION OF EMOTIONS AND BELIEFS IN EXPLORATORY CONVERSATIONSANNA CAROLINA JARDIM GERBASI 30 October 2023 (has links)
[en] Based on classroom experiences as an instructor during the COVID-19 pandemic, many challenges and frustrations regarding the teacher-student relationship were encountered. Teaching became a solitary task, as there was little student participation, and the principle of amorosidade (Freire, 1996), highly valued in classes, had scarce response. Thus, this dissertation aims to generate understandings regarding the affections and beliefs that emerge in the discursive constructions with my student-collaborator. To achieve this, I draw upon studies of emotions (Zembylas, 2003; 2015; Le Breton, 2009), evaluations (Linde, 1997), and beliefs (Barcelos, 2006; 2007) in light of the ethical-critical-reflexive principles of Exploratory Practice (Miller et al., 2008; Allwright; Hanks, 2009). This study is framed within a qualitative-interpretivist approach (Lincoln; GUBA, 2006) and aligns with the practitioner research paradigm (Allwright; Hanks, 2009), as the understandings were collaboratively constructed based on our beliefs and affections. Furthermore, this study also takes on an autoethnographic nature (Bochner; Ellis, Jones, 2016). The analyzed excerpts were constructed in exploratory conversations (Dias et al., 2021), recorded, and transcribed following conventions based on Conversation Analysis (Bastos; Biar, 2015). Partial understandings suggest the significant relevance of affective relationships for the teaching-learning process of the participants. It is possible to perceive that, for the collaborators, a pedagogical practice based on love (hooks, 2021), trust, care, responsibility, and dialogue (Freire, 2021) are essential to create an atmosphere conducive to learning.

[en] TEACHERS NARRATIVES AND DISCURSIVELY CO-CONSTRUCTED IDENTITIES IN A CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE UNDER THE LIGHT OF EXPLORATORY PRACTICE / [pt] NARRATIVAS DE PROFESSORAS E IDENTIDADES COCONSTRUÍDAS DISCURSIVAMENTE EM UM CURSO DE FORMAÇÃO CONTINUADA NORTEADO PELA PRÁTICA EXPLORATÓRIAGYSELE DA SILVA COLOMBO GOMES 14 May 2015 (has links)
[en] The present thesis analyzes the topic of co-constructed identities in the narrative practices of teachers who participated in a continuing education course offered by a private higher education institution in a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The focus of this investigation lies in the search for understandings (ALLWRIGHT, 1991; 2001; 2003; GIEVE; MILLER, 2006) about the narrative practices of teachers under continuing education, about what happens while these teachers narrate their stories, about being a teacher of English in our society these days and about the permanence of the participant teachers in their profession. The data presented here come from potential exploratory reflective activities, i.e., PERA (MORAES BEZERRA, 2007), performed throughout the second semester of 2010, which were later qualitatively analyzed in micro perspective in the light of the studies of oral narratives (LABOV, 1972; LABOV; WALETSKY, 1967; BASTOS, 2004; 2005; 2006) and life stories (LINDE, 1993), under the strong influence of the theories of Interactional Sociolinguistics (TANNEN; WALLAT, 2002; GOFFMAN, [1981] 2002), and the studies of identities (HALL, 2001), particularly the ones which consider the narrative practice as a privileged place for the construction and analysis of social identities (MOITA LOPES, 2001). It is relevant to highlight the fact that the concept of life stories adopted in this work, as narratives or social units, shared in parts throughout each person’s life and which go beyond a simple juncture of facts, as well as the relation of causality to promote coherence in the stories, are in conformity with the studies of Linde (1993). From this perspective, it is possible to observe that, while interacting, the participants of this investigation construct narratives, which allow the emersion of themes, and personality traits that coherently justify their professional choices and their permanence in their profession. The results achieved or the generated understandings, in consonance with the principles of Exploratory Practice, shed light on the strengthening of the idea of identity fluidity and multiplicity of participant teachers, besides bringing up their footings in the present scenario and the social discourse of those teachers who remain in their profession in our country. The development of this research points to the practice of reflection aiming at generating understandings to promote quality of life, not only in classrooms, but also in all instances of teaching.

[en] WHO AM I? WHO WERE WE?: (THE STORY OF) A RESEARCH ON TEACHER IDENTITIES / [pt] QUEM SOU EU? QUEM ÉRAMOS NÓS?: (A HISTÓRIA DE) UMA PESQUISA SOBRE IDENTIDADES DE PROFESSORESBRUNO DE MATOS REIS 04 February 2014 (has links)
[en] In this work, I tell the story of a research on emerging identities in an interaction among English teachers of municipal schools in Rio de Janeiro. While talking about scenes from the French movie The Class (2008), these teachers exchange experiences and establish connections between their everyday life at schools and the fiction the film portrays. Taking identity matters into consideration, I seek both to understand the relations established between the teachers’ reality and the movie’s narrative(s) and to analyze – by problematizing – my influence as a participant researcher on the emergence, maintenance or refusal of the stories and topics proposed. Doing so, not only do I analyze the data, but I also reflect on my development as a researcher. In order to ponder about the study design and about my participation in the process, I go on a journey from Arts Based Educational Research (Telles, 1998, 2006) to Exploratory Practice (Allwright and Hanks, 2009). To cope with the interactional complexity, I make use of theoretical constructs from Interactional Sociolinguistics and of some theoretical contributions from the field of narrative studies. The data of this qualitative and interpretative research is formed by excerpts from the interaction in which commentaries and discussions about the movie scenes and/or characters take place. Regarding identity constructions, the analysis indicates that all participants try to project themselves as competent professionals who are willing to resist any difficulties that may arise in carrying out their work. In this sense, the emphasis on the mishaps perceived in the interaction is commonly associated with some type of self-praise. In the analyzed context, complaining is a way of valuing the effort, of constructing oneself as the one who, despite everything and everyone, insists on doing a good job. Starting from theoretical and methodological dilemmas encountered in the course of this work, I reflect on the construction and development of this research, which leads me to notice and explore dialogic relations between Arts Based Educational Research and
Exploratory Practice – an experience that, as I reflexively try to document, contributes to my development as a researcher.
