Robust omniphobic surfaces by mimicking the springtail skin morphology

Hensel, René 05 August 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Springtails (Collembola) are wingless arthropods that are impressively adapted to cutaneous respiration in temporarily rain-flooded habitats by non-wetting skin morphology. Recapitulating the robust and effectively liquid-repellent surface characteristics of springtail skin in engineered materials may offer exciting opportunities for demanding applications. Herein, we present a strategy for mimicking morphological surface features of springtail skin in polymer membranes produced by reverse imprint lithography. We report the fabrication of multi-level silicon masters that, in turn, serve as templates for the replication of flexible polymer membranes. We examined the robust wetting characteristics of polymer membranes by in situ plastron collapse tests and condensation tests. The mechanical stability of the polymer membranes was tested using a tribometer set-up and compared with needle-shaped pillar structures made from similar material. The fabricated membranes are flexible, free-standing, and adaptable to various substrate materials and shapes that allow for emerging applications.

Beyond the skin

Eriksson, Sofia January 2018 (has links)
This paper presents an investigation in stages of transformation between body and ornament to show upon their fluid relationship and their role for the creation of human identity. I see the act of adorning the body as an act of desire, in which we take part to become something more elevated than our original state of being. I use my background as a jeweller and the body as the territory for investigating these acts of transformation. Through material explorations I examine how we mirror ourselves in the things we make and how we reinvent our bodies through making. I compare the role of the maker with the scientist and discuss the increased interest in the body and its relation to a more and more virtual reality. I make links between ancient body modifications and human enhancement within new technology and throughout the paper I discuss my work in relation to other artists work and theorists relating to visual practices.

Etude de la structuration spontanée de films polymères en nano-impression thermique / Nano-fabrication by capillary lithography : application to the organization of metallic nanoparticles

Masclaux, Céline 16 November 2012 (has links)
NanoImprint lithography by spontaneous polymer destabilization is an alternative toThermal NanoImprint, which limits physical contact between polymer and mold surfaces. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate this spontaneous destabilization and to work out ifit can lead to the formation of nanostructures by duplicating positively a structured mold. This process is in particular affected by temperature or electric field present at mold - air -polymer interfaces and by the distance d between the structures of the mold and the polymersurface. The studies of this thesis were focused on the influence of these process parameters. Itwas shown that the structuration depends more of charges’ effect than temperature, since thepolymer can creep. We highlighted the following scenario of structuration: a positiveduplication appears first and is followed, in some cases, by the filling of the mold cavitiesleading to a negative duplication. A theoretical model was used to calculate the mostfavorable destabilization wavelength, and a comparison with experimental results helped toexplain why and under which circumstances the final structuration is positive or negative. Aninvestigation was performed on the spontaneous destabilization of flexible substrate but thebigger thickness of flexible films led to a destabilisation with a wide wavelength and so tothe filling of molds’ cavities.

Påverkar grundaren aktiekursens utveckling efter en IPO? : En studie av svenska biotech-bolag

Gabrielsson, Oliver, Mofjell, Victor January 2018 (has links)
The market of biotech related products is complex and have experienced a substantial development in the recent years. Companies operating in this industry are often capital intensiveand heavily dependent on research in order to succeed, in a long-term perspective. The amount of biotech-related products is constantly facing an overwhelming level of demand. Therefore, finding a market niche is not usually the primary challenge, but instead the challenge lies deeply rooted within product development and R&D. To facilitate company financing and shifts in ownership, these companies are often drawn towards the capital market (the stock exchange). Furthermore, the founder plays a considerable role at major events within a company, such as IPOs. On such occasions, founders emit unique signals through their actions and mere presence. This study aims to explain the connection between founder position and voting rights (through shareholding) within a biotech-company, and the stock performance after an IPO. The sample consists of 119 SME biotech-companies, listed on the Swedish stock exchange between 2010-2017. The study provides the receiver with an analysis of how founders within the Swedish biotech-industry affects the stock performance after an IPO. The study shows a significant andpositive connection between founders with an “other governing position” (e.g. CRO, CSO,COO) and stock performance after an IPO. The connection is strongest by the first day of trading and after one week. We also found a negative connection between founder shareholding and the stock performance on the first day of trading. The result has strategic implications onhow companies send out signals during an IPO and how these signals are interpreted by the market.

Stanovení mechanických vlastností materiálů svarového spoje na základě měření tvrdosti / Determination of the Mechanical Properties of Weld Materials based on Hardness Test

Stodola, Martin January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation thesis deals with determination of the mechanical properties of weld materials based on instrumented hardness test. This work was caused by the research project between IAM Brno Ltd and CEZ corp., when the task was to develop a methodology for evaluation of mechanical material properties using NDT methods. For these reasons the development of methodology is reflected especially for use in practice focusing to determining the mechanical properties of the heterogeneous weld joint on the assembled equipment. The mechanical material properties are determined by carrying out non-destructive tests of the instrumented Vickers hardness. The developed methodology for determining of basic mechanical properties is based on the principle of inverse FEM modeling of the instrumented hardness tests, when output of the testing is indentation curve and measured surface imprint after unloading. The basic material mechanical properties are achieved by comparing the outputs of the experimental instrumented hardness tests and the outputs of the modeled hardness test using FEM.

Alvarez, Juliana 03 1900 (has links)
At the crossroads of anthropology, communicational and technology approach, this dissertation aims to provide a vision of the emergency room where cultural differences between the medical staff and the patients confront themselves creating communicational difficulties. To overcome the linguistic barriers, a visual support is considered as an alternative solution. In this way, the problematic is seen through the concepts of perception, comprehension, interpretation and graphic representation witch are examined by the visual culture, semiotic and hermeneutic theories. The symbolic systems of 150 images illustrating three gastro-enteritis symptoms have been analyzed following a quantitative and qualitative methodology in order to reveal their denotative and connotative significations. The results showed the existence of a new visual culture that presents a hybrid and pluricultural iconographic code. Based on these findings, new hypothesis concerning the impact of a visual support on the communicational dynamic could be proposed.
